A non-constructive proof of the Four Colour Theorem
Abstract: The approach is through a singularity analysis of generating functions for 3- and 4-connected triangulations, asymptotic analysis, properties of the ${{}_3F_2}$ hypergeometric series, and Tutte's enumerative work on planar maps and chromatic polynomials.

A George Szekeres Formula for Restricted Partitions
Abstract: We derive an asymptotic formula for $A(n,j,r)$ the number of integer partitions of $n$ into at most $j$ parts each part $\le r$. We assume $j$ and $r$ are near their mean values. We also investigate the second largest part, the number of parts $\ge 2$, etc. We show that the fraction of the partitions of an even integer $n$ that are graphical, ie. whose parts form the degree sequence of a simple gr… ▽ More

Natural exact covering systems and the reversion of the Möbius series
Abstract: We prove that the number of natural exact covering systems of cardinality $k$ is equal to the coefficient of $x^k$ in the reversion of the power series $\sum_{k \ge 1} μ(k) x^k$, where $μ(k)$ is the usual number-theoretic Möbius function. Using this result, we deduce an asymptotic expression for the number of such systems.

Counting the Palstars
Abstract: A palstar (after Knuth, Morris, and Pratt) is a concatenation of even-length palindromes. We show that, asymptotically, there are $Θ(α_k^n)$ palstars of length $2n$ over a $k$-letter alphabet, where $α_k$ is a constant such that $2k-1 < α_k < 2k-{1 \over 2}$. In particular, $α_2 \doteq 3.33513193$.

Counting Abelian Squares
Abstract: An abelian square is a string of length 2n where the last n symbols form a permutation of the first n symbols. In this note we count the number of abelian squares and give an asymptotic estimate of this quantity.

A Discontinuity in the Distribution of Fixed Point Sums
Abstract: The quantity $f(n,r)$, defined as the number of permutations of the set $[n]=\{1,2,... n\}$ whose fixed points sum to $r$, shows a sharp discontinuity in the neighborhood of $r=n$. We explain this discontinuity and study the possible existence of other discontinuities in $f(n,r)$ for permutations. We generalize our results to other families of structures that exhibit the same kind of discontinui… ▽ More
