Channel state information (CSI) rapidly becomes outdated in high mobility scenarios, degrading the performance of wireless communication systems. In these cases, time series prediction techniques can be applied to combat the effects of outdated CSI. Recently, it has been shown that recurrent neural networks (RNNs) exhibit outstanding performance in time series prediction tasks. In this paper, we investigate the performance of RNN and long short term memory (LSTM) predictors in a simple Rayleigh flat-fading channel. We conduct numerical experiments to evaluate whether these machine-learning (ML)-based predictors can outperform the optimal linear minimum mean square error Wiener predictor. Our simulation results indicate that the considered neural network predictors outperform the Wiener predictor for small observation window lengths and are more robust under weak channel correlation as well as in the presence of noise. Furthermore, we show that simple shallow RNNs are sufficient to model Rayleigh channels over a wide range of Doppler shifts.

Deploying antenna arrays with an asymptotically large aperture will be central to achieving the theoretical gains of massive MIMO in beyond-5G systems. Such extra-large MIMO (XL-MIMO) systems experience propagation conditions which are not typically observed in conventional massive MIMO systems, such as spatial non-stationarities and near-field propagation. Moreover, standard precoding schemes, such as zero-forcing (ZF), may not apply to XL-MIMO transmissions due to the prohibitive complexity associated with such a large-scale scenario. We propose two novel precoding schemes that aim at reducing the complexity without losing much performance. The proposed schemes leverage a plane-wave approximation and user grou** to obtain a low-complexity approximation of the ZF precoder. Our simulation results show that the proposed schemes offer a possibility for a performance and complexity trade-off compared to the benchmark schemes.

We present a novel and low-complexity massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) precoding strategy based on novel findings concerning the subspace separability of Rician fading channels. Considering a uniform rectangular array at the base station, we show that the subspaces spanned by the channel vectors can be factorized as a tensor product between two lower dimensional subspaces. Based on this result, we formulate tensor maximum ratio transmit and zero-forcing precoders. We show that the proposed tensor precoders exhibit lower computational complexity and require less instantaneous channel state information than their linear counterparts. Finally, we present computer simulations that demonstrate the applicability of the proposed tensor precoders in practical communication scenarios.

New-generation wireless communication systems will employ large-scale antenna arrays to satisfy the increasing capacity demand. This massive scenario brings new challenges to the channel equalization problem due to the increased signal processing complexity. We present a novel low-rank tensor equalizer to tackle the high computational demands of the classical linear approach. Specifically, we propose a method to design a canonical polyadic tensor filter to minimize the mean square error criterion. Our simulation results indicate that the proposed equalizer needs fewer calculations and is more robust to short training sequences than the benchmark.

We propose practical transceiver structures for double-sided massive multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) systems. Unlike standard massive MIMO, both transmit and receive sides are equipped with high-dimensional antenna arrays. We leverage the multi-layer filtering architecture and propose novel layered transceiver schemes with practical channel state information requirements to simplify the complexity of our double-sided massive MIMO system. We conduct a comprehensive simulation campaign to investigate the performance of the proposed transceivers under different channel propagation conditions and to identify the most suitable strategy. Our results show that the covariance matrix eigenfilter design at the outer transceiver layer combined with maximum eigenmode transmission precoding/minimum mean square error combining at the inner transceiver layer yields the best achievable sum rate performance for different propagation conditions and multi-user interference levels.

Future cellular systems will likely employ massive bi-dimensional arrays to improve performance by large array gain and more accurate spatial filtering, motivating the design of low-complexity signal processing methods. We propose optimising a Kronecker-separable beamforming filter that takes advantage of the bi-dimensional array geometry to reduce computational costs. The Kronecker factors are obtained using two strategies: alternating optimisation, and sub-array minimum mean square error beamforming with Tikhonov regularization. According to the simulation results, the proposed methods are computationally efficient but come with source recovery degradation, which becomes negligible when the sources are sufficiently separated in space.

With the congestion of the sub-6 GHz spectrum, the interest in massive multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) systems operating on millimeter wave spectrum grows. In order to reduce the power consumption of such massive MIMO systems, hybrid analog/digital transceivers and application of low-resolution digital-to-analog/analog-to-digital converters have been recently proposed. In this work, we investigate the energy efficiency of quantized hybrid transmitters equipped with a fully/partially-connected phase-shifting network composed of active/passive phase-shifters and compare it to that of quantized digital precoders. We introduce a quantized single-user MIMO system model based on an additive quantization noise approximation considering realistic power consumption and loss models to evaluate the spectral and energy efficiencies of the transmit precoding methods. Simulation results show that partially-connected hybrid precoders can be more energy-efficient compared to digital precoders, while fully-connected hybrid precoders exhibit poor energy efficiency in general. Also, the topology of phase-shifting components offers an energy-spectral efficiency trade-off: active phase-shifters provide higher data rates, while passive phase-shifters maintain better energy efficiency.
