It is shown in terms of d(ilaton)-$χ$ effective field theory (d$χ$EFT) incorporated in a generalized effective field theory (G$n$EFT) implemented with hidden local symmetry and hidden scale symmetry that the recently measured superallowed Gamow-Teller transition in the doubly-magic-shell nucleus $^{100}$Sn indicates a surprisingly large anomaly-induced quenching (AIQ) of $g_A$ from the free-space value of 1.276 to $\approx 0.8 $. Combined with the quenching expected from strong nuclear correlations, the effective coupling in nuclei, $g_A^{\rm eff}$ would come to $\sim 1/2$. If this result were reconfirmed, it would impact not only nuclear structure and dense compact-star matter -- where $g_A$ figures in $π$-N coupling via the Goldberger-Treiman relation -- but also in search for physics Beyond the Standard Model (BSM), e.g. $0νββ$ decay, where 4th power of $g_A$ figures.

The $V_{lowk}$-renormalization group approach on the surface of Fermi liquid for nuclear matter to which Tom Kuo made a pioneering contribution at Stony Brook is found to inject the pivotal input in the formulation of the generalized nuclear effective field theory with acronym ``G$n$EFT" applicable to superdense compact-star physics. A topology change in terms of skyrmions and half-skyrmions is shown to play the role of the ``putative" hadron-quark continuity (HQC)" conjectured in QCD. Crucially involved are hidden local symmetry (``HLS") and hidden scale symmetry (``HSS") with the vacuum sliding with density in nuclear medium, with the nuclear tensor force emerging as a Landau Fermi-liquid fixed-point quantity. A possibly novel paradigm, a ``Cheshire Catism," in nuclear correlations is suggested.

We calculated in nonlinear bosonized theory $1/\bar{N}$ corrections to the Landau Fermi-liquid fixed-point (FLFP) axial-vector coupling constant in nuclear matter $g_A^L\approx 1$ to which the Landau parameter $F_1^ω$ predominantly contributes. We obtain the correction to $F_1^ω$ to calculate the correction $δg_A^L$ to the axial-vector coupling constant $g_A^L$ at the nuclear saturation density. It comes out to be extremely small, $δg_A^L\sim O(10^{-4})$. We discuss how the "dilaton-limit fixed-point (DLFP)" result $g_A=1$ can be preserved from finite nuclei to high densities relevant to massive neutron stars and its possible impact on $0νββ$ decay processes involved in going beyond the Standard Model.

How to disentangle the possible {\it genuine} quenching of $g_A$ caused by scale anomaly of QCD parameterized by the scale-symmetry-breaking quenching factor $q_{ssb}$ from nuclear correlation effects is described. This is done by matching the Fermi-liquid fixed point (FLFP) theory to the ``Extreme Single Particle (shell) Model" (acronym ESPM) in superallowed Gamow-Teller transitions in heavy doubly-magic shell nuclei. The recently experimentally observed indication for $(1-q_{ssb})\neq 0$ -- that one might identify as ``fundamental quenching ({\it FQ})" -- in certain experiments seems to be alarmingly significant. I present arguments how symmetries hidden in the matter-free vacuum can emerge and suppress such {\it FQ} in strong nuclear correlations. How to confirm or refute this observation is discussed in terms of the superallowed Gamow-Teller transition in the doubly-magic nucleus $^{100}$Sn and in the spectral shape in the multifold forbidden $β$ decay of $^{115}$In.

This can be attributed to an effect of the trace anomaly in QCD "emerging" in nuclear medium. If confirmed, this would signal a major revam** to do in nuclear interactions consistent with chiral-scale symmetry in nuclear medium and a big impact on $0ν$ and $νν$ double $β$ decays for BSM. I present an argument that such a big anomaly-induced quenching is incompatible with how hidden scale symmetry manifests in nuclear medium, A possible means to resolve this issue is discussed in terms of hidden scale symmetry permeating in baryonic matter from normal nuclear matter to massive compact-star matter.

We describe the map** at high density of topological structure of baryonic matter to a nuclear effective field theory that implements hidden symmetries emergent from strong nuclear correlations. The theory so constructed is found to be consistent with no conflicts with the presently available observations in both normal nuclear matter and compact-star matter. The hidden symmetries involved are "local flavor symmetry" of the vector mesons identified to be (Seiberg-)dual to the gluons of QCD and hidden "quantum scale symmetry" with an IR fixed point with a "genuine dilaton (GD)" characterized by non-vanishing pion and dilaton decay constants. Both the skyrmion topology for $N_f \geq 2$ baryons and the fractional quantum Hall (FQH) droplet topology for $N_f=1$ baryons are unified in the "homogeneous/hidden" Wess-Zumino term in the hidden local symmetry (HLS) Lagrangian. The possible indispensable role of the FQH droplets in going beyond the density regime of compact stars approaching scale-chiral restoration is explored by moving toward the limit where both the dilaton and the pion go massless.

It indicates a ubiquitous role, thus far unexplored, of hidden symmetries -- flavor-local and scale -- permeating from dilute baryonic systems to normal nuclear matter and then to compact-star matter. Here I give a brief account of the possibly "indispensable" relevance of the $η^\prime$ singular ring, a.k.a. fractional quantum Hall (FQH) droplet, to the properties of the lowest-lying vector mesons $ω$ and $ρ$, relevant to dilepton production processes, argued to be Seiberg-dual to the gluons near the chiral restoration.

We review how the "cusp" predicted in the nuclear symmetry energy generated by a topology change at density $n_{1/2}\gsim 2 n_0$ can have a surprising consequence, so far unrecognized in nuclear physics and astrophysics communities, on the structure of dense compact-star matter. The topology change, when translated into nuclear EFT with "effective" QCD degrees of freedom in terms of hidden local and scale symmetries duly taken into account, predicts an EoS that is soft below and stiff above $n\gsim n_{1/2}$, involving no low-order phase transitions, and yields the macrophysical properties of neutron stars consistent -- so far with no tension -- with the astrophysical observations, including the maximum mass $ 2.0\lsim M/ M_\odot\lsim 2.2$ as well as the GW data. Furthermore it describes the interior core of the massive stars populated by baryon-charge-fractionalized quasi-fermions that are neither baryonic nor quarkonic. It is argued that the cusp "buried" in the symmetry energy resulting from strong correlations with hidden heavy degrees of freedom leads, at $n\gsim n_{1/2}$, to what we dubbed "pseudo-conformal" sound speed, $v^2_{pcs}/c^2\approx 1/3$, precociously converged from below at $n_{1/2}$. It is not strictly conformal since the trace of energy-momentum tensor is not zero even in the chiral limit. This observation with the topology change identified with the putative hadron-quark continuity, taking place at at density $\gsim 2 n_0$, implies that the quantities accurately measured at $\sim n_0$ cannot give a stringent constraint for what takes place at the core density of compact stars $\sim (3-7) n_0$. This is because the change of degrees of freedom in effective field theory is involved. We discuss the implication of this on the recent PREX-II "dilemma" in the measured skin thickness of $^{208}$Pb.

When baryon-quark continuity is formulated in terms of a topology change without invoking "explicit " QCD degrees of freedom at a density higher than twice the nuclear matter density $n_0$ the core of massive compact stars can be described in terms of fractionally charged particles, behaving neither like pure baryons nor deconfined quarks. Hidden symmetries, both local gauge and pseudo-conformal (or broken scale), lead to the pseudo-conformal (PC) sound velocity $v_{pcs}^2/c^2\approx 1/3$ at $\gsim 3n_0$ in compact stars. We argue these symmetries are "emergent" from strong nuclear correlations and conjecture that they reflect hidden symmetries in QCD proper exposed by nuclear correlations. We establish a possible link between the quenching of $g_A$ in superallowed Gamow-Teller transitions in nuclei and the precocious onset at $n\gsim 3n_0$ of the PC sound velocity predicted at the dilaton limit fixed point. We propose that bringing in explicit quark degrees of freedom as is done in terms of the "quarkyonic" and other hybrid hadron-quark structure and our topology-change strategy represent the "hadron-quark duality" formulated in terms of the Cheshire-Cat mechanism~\cite{CC} for the smooth cross-over between hadrons and quarks. Confrontation with currently available experimental observations is discussed to support this notion.

Topology effects have being extensively studied and confirmed in strongly correlated condensed matter physics. In the large color number limit of QCD, baryons can be regarded as topological objects -- skyrmions -- and the baryonic matter can be regarded as a skyrmion matter. We review in this paper the generalized effective field theory for dense compact-star matter constructed with the robust inputs obtained from the skyrmion approach to dense nuclear matter, relying to possible ``emergent" scale and local flavor symmetries at high density. All nuclear matter properties from the saturation density $n_0$ up to several times $n_0$ can be fairly well described. A uniquely novel -- and unorthdox -- feature of this theory is the precocious appearance of the pseudo-conformal sound velocity $v^2_{s}/c^2 \approx 1/3$, with the non-vanishing trace of the energy momentum tensor of the system. The topology change encoded in the density scaling of low energy constants is interpreted as the quark-hadron continuity in the sense of Cheshire Cat Principle (CCP) at density $\gsim 2n_0$ in accessing massive compact stars. We confront the approach with the data from GW170817 and GW190425.

This can be considered as the Cheshire-Cat mechanism~\cite{CC} for the hadron-quark continuity arrived at bottom-up from skyrmions that is equivalent to the "MIT-bag"-to-skyrmion continuity arrived at top-down from quarks/gluons. Hidden symmetries, both local gauge and pseudo-conformal (or broken scale), emerge and give rise both to the long-standing "effective $g_A^\ast\approx 1$" in nuclear Gamow-Teller transitions at $\lsim n_0$ and to the pseudo-conformal sound velocity $v_{pcs}^2/c^2\approx 1/3$ at $\gsim 3n_0$. It is suggested that what has been referred to, since a long time, as "quenched $g_A$" in light nuclei reflects what leads to the dilaton-limit $g_A^{\rm DL}=1$ at near the (putative) infrared fixed point of scale invariance. These properties are confronted with the recent observations in Gamow-Teller transitions and in astrophysical observations.

The "quenched" $g_A$ observed in nuclear superallowed Gamow-Teller transitions, a long-standing puzzle in nuclear physics, is shown to encode the emergence of chiral-scale symmetry hidden in QCD in the vacuum. This enables one to explore how trace-anomaly-induced scale symmetry breaking enters in the renormalized $g_A$ in nuclei applicable to certain non-unique forbidden processes involved in neutrinoless double beta decays. A parallel is made between the roles of chiral-scale symmetry in quenching $g_A$ in highly dense medium and in hadron-quark continuity in the EoS of dense matter in massive compact stars. A systematic chiral-scale EFT, presently lacking in nuclear theory and potentially crucial for the future progress, is suggested as a challenge in the field.

We review the recent exploration of a possible "domain-wall structure" of compressed baryonic matter in massive compact stars in terms of fractional quantum Hall droplets and skyrmions for baryons in medium. The theoretical framework is anchored on an effective nuclear effective field theory that incorporates two hidden symmetries, flavor local symmetry and scale symmetry conjectured to be dual to the gluons and quarks of QCD. It hints at a basically different, hitherto undiscovered structure of nuclear matter at low as well as high densities. Hidden "genuine dilaton (GD)" symmetry and hidden local symmetry (HLS) gauge-equivalent at low density to nonlinear sigma model capturing chiral symmetry, put together in nuclear effective field theory, are seen to play an increasingly important role in providing hadron-quark duality in baryonic matter. This strongly motivates incorporating both symmetries in formulating "first-principles" approaches to nuclear dynamics encompassing from the nuclear matter density to the highest density stable in the Universe.

A recent RIKEN experiment on the quenched $g_A$ in the superallowed Gamow-Telller transition from $^{100}$Sn indicates a role of scale anomaly encoded in the anomalous dimension $β^\prime$ of the gluonic stress tensor ${\rm Tr \ G}_{μν}^2$. This observation provides a support to the notion of hidden scale symmetry emerging by strong nuclear correlations with an IR fixed point realized -- in the chiral limit -- in the Nambu-Goldstone mode. We suggest there is an analogy in the way scale symmetry manifests in nuclear medium to the continuity from the unitarity limit at low density (in light nuclei) to the dilaton limit at high density (in compact stars). In between the limits, say, at normal nuclear matter density, the symmetry is not visible, hence hidden.

We construct a generalized EFT approach to dense compact-star matter that exploits the CCP for hadron-quark continuity at high density, hidden topology and hidden symmetries of QCD. No Landau-Ginzburg-Wilsonian-type phase transition is involved. The microscopic DoF of QCD possibly intervening at high baryonic density are traded in for fractionalized topological objects. Essential in the description are symmetries invisible in QCD in the matter-free vacuum: Scale symmetry, flavor local symmetry and parity-doubling. The partial emergence of scale symmetry is signaled by a dilatonic scalar in a "pseudo-conformal" structure. Flavor gauge symmetry manifests with the $ρ$ meson mass going toward a Wilsonian RGFP identified with the VMFP at which the gauge boson mass goes to zero. Parity doubling is to take place as the quasi-nucleon mass converges to the chiral invariant $m_0$. The theory accounts satisfactorily for all known properties of normal nuclear matter and makes certain predictions that are drastically different from what's available in the literature. In particular, it provides a topological mechanism, argued to be robust, for the cross-over from soft-to-hard EoS that predicts the star properties in overall agreement with the presently available data, including the maximum star mass $M_{max}\sim 2.3 M_\odot$ and the recent LIGO/Virgo GW data. What is most glaringly different from all other approaches known, however, is the prediction for the rapid convergence to a sound velocity of star $v_s^2\approx 1/3$ at a density $n\gsim 3 n_0$, far from the asymptotic density $\gsim 50n_0$ expected in pQCD. We interpret this to signal the onset of albeit approximate conformal symmetry in dense compact-star matter. The model developed here could bring out a new paradigm in nuclear/hadron physics, exploiting ideas in condensed matter physics, nuclear and particle physics and astrophysics.

For a small bag radius, the bag reduces to a vortex line which is the smile of the cat with flowing gapless quarks all spinning in the same direction. The disc enclosed by the smile is described by a topological field theory due to the Callan-Harvey anomaly out-flow. The chiral bag carries naturally unit baryon number and spin $\frac 12 N_c$. It is present in the Skyrme model -- with the pion field only -- and is left unscathed by massive degrees of freedom such as the vector mesons $ρ$ and $ω$ and also the scalar meson introduced as a dilaton. It leads to the emergence of parity-doubling at the skyrmion-half-skyrmion transition and impacts on the nuclear symmetry energy "wilderness" landscape, weeding out roughly half of the wilderness. It is shown that a pseudo-conformal sound velocity arises at a precocious density at which the cusp is formed. In contrast to the conclusion obtained in the previous works in the literature, our model with the upper bound of the sound velocity $v_s = 1/\sqrt{3}$, the so-called conformal sound velocity, set in at a { density relevant to compact stars} $\gsim 2 n_0$ where $n_0$ is the normal nuclear matter density, can accommodate {\it all} presently established nuclear matter and compact-star properties including the maximum star-mass constraint $ \simeq 2.3 M_\odot$. This observation is associated with a possible emergence of pseudoconformal structure in compact star matter---in which the trace of energy-momentum tensor is a nearly density-independent nonzero constant---brought in by a topology change at $2.0 \lesssim n_{1/2}/n_0 \lesssim 4.0$ commensurate with a possible change of degrees of freedom from hadrons.

We clarify and extend further the idea developed in \cite{PKLMR,MLPR} that baryonic matter at high density has an emergent "pseudo-conformal symmetry." It is argued that as baryonic density exceeds $n \simeq n_{1/2} \gtrsim 2n_0$, a topology change mimicking the baryon-quark continuity takes place at $n_{1/2}$. In terms of skyrmions, this corresponds to the transition from skyrmions to half-skyrmions and impacts on the equation of state of dense baryonic matter. The emergence in medium at $n_{1/2}$ of parity-doublet symmetry -- which is invisible in QCD in matter-free vacuum -- plays the crucial role. The consequence of the topology change is that massive compact stars carry the "pseudo-conformal sound velocity" $v_s^2/c^2\approx 1/3$ at $n\gsim n_{1/2}$ signaling a precursor to precocious emergence of scale symmetry as well as {a} local symmetry hidden in QCD in the matter-free vacuum. A highly significant prediction of this work is that the topology change density from normal matter to half-skyrmion matter, up-to-date inaccessible either by QCD proper or by terrestrial experiments, could possibly be pinned down within the range $2 < n_{1/2}/n_0 < 4$, commensurate with the range expected for a continuous hadrons-to-quarks/gluons transition.

How the axial coupling constant $g_A$ in nuclear Gamow-Teller transitions described in shell model gets "quenched" to a universal constant close to 1 can be explained by nuclear correlations in Fermi-liquid fixed point theory using a scale-symmetric chiral Lagrangian supplemented with hidden local symmetric vector mesons. Contrary to what one might naively suspect -- and has been discussed in some circles, there is no fundamental quenching at nuclear matter density due to QCD condensates. When the density of many-body systems treated with the same Lagrangian increases beyond the density $n=n_{1/2}\gsim 2n_0$ (where $n_0$ is the normal nuclear matter density) at which skyrmions representing baryons fractionize to half-skyrmions, with the $ρ$ meson driven toward the vector manifestation fixed point and a scalar meson $σ$ driven to the dilaton-limit fixed point with the nucleons parity-doubled, the dense matter supports the "pseudo-conformal" sound velocity for $n\gsim n_{1/2}$ while the trace of the energy momentum tensor remains non-vanishing. A plausible interpretation is that this signals the emergence of scale symmetry not explicitly present or hidden in QCD in the vacuum. The fundamental constant $g_A$, unaffected by QCD condensates for $n< n_{1/2}$, does go to 1 as the dilaton-limit fixed point is approached before arriving at chiral restoration, but it is not directly related to the "quenched $g_A$" in nuclei which can be explained as a Fermi-liquid fixed point quantity. The mechanism that produces a precocious pseudo-conformal sound velocity is expected to impact on the tidal deformability $Λ$ in gravity waves from coalescing neutron stars.

We construct a new effective field theory approach to the equation of state (EoS), dubbed pseudo-confomal model "PCM," for nuclear and compact star matter entirely in terms of effective hadron degrees of freedom. The possible transition at $n\sim (2-4) n_0$ (where $n_0$ is the normal nuclear matter density) from hadron degrees of freedom to strongly-coupled quark degrees of freedom, giving rise to a soft-to-hard changeover in the EoS that can accommodate the massive stars observed, is effectuated by the topology change at $n_{1/2}\gsim 2n_0$ from skyrmions to half-skyrmions without involving local order-parameter fields. The mechanism exploits possible emergence of hidden scale and local symmetries of QCD at high density, leading to a precocious "pseudo-conformal" sound velocity $v_s^2=1/3$ (in unit of $c=1$) for $n\gsim 3n_0$. The resulting prediction signals a drastic departure from standard nuclear many-body theory in the density regime involved in the massive stars. We suggest that the tidal deformability implemented in gravitational waves coming from coalescing neutron stars in LIGO/Virgo-type observations could pin down the location of the topology change density $n_{1/2}$.

This is a brief history of what I consider as very important, some of which truly seminal, contributions made by young Korean nuclear theorists, mostly graduate students working on PhD thesis in 1990's and early 2000's, to nuclear effective field theory, nowadays heralded as the first-principle approach to nuclear physics. The theoretical framework employed is an effective field theory anchored on a scale-invariant hidden local symmetric Lagrangian constructed along the line of Weinberg's "Folk Theorem" on effective field theory. The problems addressed are the high-precision calculations on the thermal $np$ capture, the solar $pp$ fusion process, the solar $hep$ process -- John Bahcall's challenge to nuclear theorists -- and the quenching of $g_A$ in giant Gamow-Teller resonances and the whop** enhancement of first-forbidden beta transitions in astrophysical processes. Extending adventurously the strategy to a wild uncharted domain in which a systematic implementation of the "theorem" is far from obvious, the same effective Lagrangian is applied to the structure of compact stars. A surprising result on the properties of massive stars, totally different from what has been obtained up to day in the literature, is predicted, such as the precocious onset of conformal sound velocity together with the possible emergence of hidden symmetries such as scale symmetry and hidden local symmetry.

The in-medium property of the axial-vector coupling constant $g_A$ in nuclei and dense baryonic matter, a long standing problem in nuclear physics, is reformulated in terms of the recently constructed scale-invariant hidden local symmetric ($bs$HLS) Lagrangian that encompasses the physics of baryon density ranging from nuclear matter $n_0$ to that of massive compact stars, $\sim 6n_0$. It is shown that unlike the pion decay constant $f_π$ that slides with the vacuum change induced by, and drop** with, increasing density, the axial-current constant $g_A$ should remain more or less unaffected by the decrease of chiral condensate in nuclear Gamow-Teller transitions (involving the space component of the axial current) whereas it gets strongly enhanced in axial-charge transitions (involving the time component of the axial current) as density increases. This phenomenon confirms the "chiral filter hypothesis" inferred from the current algebras in 1970's. These phenomena can be taken as a "nuclear physics proof" of Weinberg's folk theorem on quantum effective field theories. The implications of these predictions on giant Gamow-Teller resonances in nuclei and on first-forbidden beta transitions (relevant to nuclear astrophysical processes) are discussed.

As the baryonic matter density is increased toward the vector manifestation (VM) fixed-point at which the $ρ$ mass is to vanish, the effective in-medium mass ratio $m^*_ρ/m^*_N$ is to tend to zero proportionally to $g^*_ρ$ where $g^*_ρ$ is the in-medium hidden gauge coupling constant. I develop the thesis that the intricacy involved in the mass generation could be decoded from experiments at RIB accelerators and massive compact stars.

Abstract:
A scale-invariant chiral effective Lagrangian is constructed for octet pions and a dilaton figuring as Nambu-Goldstone bosons with vector mesons incorporated as hidden gauge fields. The Lagrangian is built to the next-to-leading order in chiral-scale counting without baryon fields and then to leading order including baryons. The Role of Vector Mesons for Emergent Scale-Chiral Symmetry in Nuclear Interactions
Authors:

Abstract:
When a light scalar dilaton $σ$ and the light-quark vector mesons $V=(ρ,ω)$ are incorporated into an effective scale-invariant hidden local symmetric (sHLS) Lagrangian, scale symmetry for $σ$ and local gauge symmetry for $V$, both invisible in QCD in the vacuum, arise as emergent symmetries at a density above $n_{1/2}\sim 2n_0$, a phenomenon highly relevant for massive compact stars, hitherto unob…

What takes place involves a topology change at $n_{1/2}$, and as the density increases beyond, (1) exposes a parity doubling in the nucleon structure, (2) triggers drastic change in the nuclear tensor force and (3) stiffens the nuclear symmetry energy as density exceeds $n_{1/2}$. It results from an intricate interplay between the two hidden symmetries that the $ρ$ meson moves toward the vector manifestation (VM) fixed point where $m_ρ\rightarrow 0$ and the velocity of sound $v_s$ in the dense matter approaches the conformal symmetry value $v_s/c=\sqrt{1/3}$, indicating a presence of an infrared fixed point at which the dilaton mass vanishes.

I describe the long-standing search for a "smoking-gun" signal for the manifestation of (scale-)chiral symmetry in nuclear interactions. It is prompted by Gerry Brown's last unpublished note, reproduced verbatim below, on the preeminent role of pions and vector ($ρ$,$ω$) mesons in providing a simple and elegant description of strongly correlated nuclear interactions. In this note written in tribute to Gerry Brown, I first describe a case of an unambiguous signal in axial-charge transitions in nuclei and then combine his ideas with the more recent development on the role of hidden symmetries in nuclear physics. What transpires is the surprising conclusion that the Landau-Migdal fixed point interaction $G_0^\prime$, the nuclear tensor forces and Brown-Rho scaling, all encoded in scale-invariant hidden local symmetry, as Gerry put, "run the show and make all forces equal."

The hadronic matter described as a skyrmion matter embedded in an FCC crystal is found to turn into a half-skyrmion matter with vanishing (in the chiral limit) quark condensate and {\it non-vanishing} pion decay constant {$f_π$} at a density $n_{1/2}$ lower than or near the critical density $n_c$ at which hadronic matter changes over to a chiral symmetry restored phase with possibly deconfined qua…

The hadronic matter described as a skyrmion matter embedded in an FCC crystal is found to turn into a half-skyrmion matter with vanishing (in the chiral limit) quark condensate and {\it non-vanishing} pion decay constant {$f_π$} at a density $n_{1/2}$ lower than or near the critical density $n_c$ at which hadronic matter changes over to a chiral symmetry restored phase with possibly deconfined quarks. When hidden local gauge fields and a dilaton scalar of spontaneously broken scale symmetry with decay constant $f_χ$ are incorporated, this half-skyrmion phase is characterized by $f_χ\approx f_π\neq 0$ with the hidden gauge coupling $g\neq 0$ but $\ll 1$. While chiral symmetry is restored {\it globally} in this region in the sense that space-averaged, $\la\bar{q}q\ra$ vanishes, quarks are still confined in massive hadrons and massless pions. This phase is shown to play a crucial role in the model for a smooth transition from a soft EoS at low density to a stiffer EoS at high density, the changeover taking place at $n_{1/2} \sim 2n_0$. It resembles the "quarkyonic phase" predicted in large $N_c$ QCD and represents the "hadronic freedom" regime which figures as a doorway to chiral restoration. The fractionization of skyrmion matter into half-skyrmion matter has a tantalizing analogy to what appears to happen in condensed matter in (2+1) dimensions where half-skyrmions or "merons" enter as relevant degrees of freedom at the interface.

When scale symmetry is implemented into hidden local symmetry in low-energy strong interactions to arrive at a scale-invariant hidden local symmetric (HLS) theory, the scalar $f_0(500)$ may be interpreted as pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone (pNG) boson, i.e., dilaton, of spontaneously broken scale invariance, joining the pseudo-scalar pNG bosons $π$ and the matter fields $V=(ρ,ω)$ as relevant degrees of freedom. Implementing the skyrmion-half-skyrmion transition predicted at large $N_c$ in QCD at a density roughly twice the nuclear matter density found in the crystal simulation of dense skyrmion matter, we determine the intrinsically density-dependent (IDD) "bare parameters" of the scale-invariant HLS Lagrangian matched to QCD at a matching scale $Λ_M$. The resulting effective Lagrangian, with the parameters scaling with the density of the system, is applied to nuclear matter and dense baryonic matter relevant to massive compact stars by means of the double-decimation renormalization-group $V_{lowk}$ formalism. We satisfactorily post-dict the properties of normal nuclear matter and more significantly {\it predict} the EoS of dense compact-star matter that quantitatively accounts for the presently available data coming from both the terrestrial and space laboratories. We interpret the resulting structure of compact-star matter as revealing how the combination of hidden-scale symmetry and hidden local symmetry manifests itself in compressed baryonic matter.

On the pentaquark candidates $P_c^+(4380)$ and $P_c^+(4450)$ within the soliton picture of baryons

Abstract:
Using the bound state version of the topological soliton model for the baryons we show that the existence of a bound (or quasi-bound) $\bar D$-soliton state leads to the possibility of having hidden charm pentaquarks with quantum numbers and masses, which are compatible with those of the candidates recently reported by the LHCb experiment. The implications of heavy quark symmetry are elaborated.

Some of the surprising observations are that the bulk of proton mass is not Nambu-Goldstonian, parity doubling emerges at high density and the EoS of baryonic matter can be soft enough for heavy-ion processes at low density and stiff enough at high density for $\sim 2$ solar mass neutron stars.
