Depending on their mechanism of self-propulsion, active particles can exhibit a time-dependent, often periodic, propulsion velocity. The precise propulsion velocity profile determines their mean square displacement and their effective diffusion coefficient at long times. Here we demonstrate that any periodic propulsion profile results in a larger diffusion coefficient than the corresponding case with constant propulsion velocity. We investigate in detail the case of periodic exponentially decaying velocity pulses, expected in propulsion mechanisms based on sudden absorption of finite amounts of energy. We show both analytically and with numerical simulations that in these cases the effective diffusion coefficient can be arbitrarily enhanced with respect to the case with constant velocity equal to the average speed. Our results may help interpret in a new light observations on the diffusion enhancement of active particles.

The paper presents a framework for fire extinguishing in an urban scenario by a team of aerial and ground robots. The system was developed to address Challenge 3 of the 2020Mohamed Bin Zayed International Robotics Challenge (MBZIRC). The challenge required to autonomously detect, locate and extinguish fires on different floors of a building, as well as in its surroundings. The multi-robot system developed consists of a heterogeneous robot team of up to three Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAV) and one Unmanned Ground Vehicle (UGV). We describe the main hardware and software components for UAV and UGVplatforms and also present the main algorithmic components of the system: a 3D LIDAR-based map** and localization module able to work in GPS-denied scenarios; a global planner and a fast local re-planning system for robot navigation; infrared-based perception and robot actuation control for fire extinguishing; and a mission executive and coordination module based on Behavior Trees. The paper finally describes the results obtained during the competition, where the system worked fully autonomously and scored in all the trials performed. The presented system ended in 7th position out of 20 teams in the Challenge3 competition and in 5th position (out of 17 teams) in the Challenge 3 entry to the Grand Finale (Grand Challenge) of MBZIRC 2020 competition.

We analyze how retail investors price the credit risk of online P"P consumer loans in a reverse auction framework where personal interaction is absent. The explained interest rate variance is considerably larger than in comparable studies using bank loan data. This is unexpected, given the difference in experience and the limited set of information provided to the investor. Factors representing economic status significantly influence lender evaluations of the borrower's credit risk. Previous studies on gender discrimination found mixed results. We show that this is likely due to simplified specifications and find surprising results: male borrowers are charged a higher interest rates, conditional on being married and having children. Overall, our results indicate that retail investors exhibit a strong degree of predictability in this weakly regulated market for online P2P consumer loans.

Downsizing microswimmers to the nanoscale, and using light as an externally controlled fuel, are two important goals within the field of active matter. Here we demonstrate using all-atom molecular dynamics simulations that solvation relaxation, the solvent dynamics induced after visible light electronic excitation of a fluorophore, can be used to propel nanoparticles immersed in polar solvents. We show that fullerenes functionalized with fluorophore molecules in liquid water exhibit substantial enhanced mobility under external excitation, with a propulsion speed proportional to the power dissipated into the system. We show that the propulsion mechanism is quantitatively consistent with a molecular scale instance of self-thermophoresis. Strategies to direct the motion of functionalized fullerenes in a given direction using confined environments are also discussed.

In this work, we present a quasiparticle strategy to study the Hamiltonian description of the stationary states for two quantum dots--cavity system. We consider three different effective schemes of quasiparticles that give an in-depth insight into the physics involved in the Hamiltonian eigenstates for parameters that optimize or minimize the energy gap condition. We analyze features of quantum measures like fractional composition, linear entropy, and concurrence to observe which one description gives the complete physical information. Our findings show that a polaritonic---light-matter quasiparticle---approach catch better the physics contained in the whole regimes considered.

Then, it is presented a comparison of these experimental data with the phenomenological Ginzburg-Landau (GL) approach that takes into account the unavoidable contribution of the fluctuating pairs, the only theoretical scenario allowing at present to analyze these roundings at the quantitative level. These analyses demonstrate that the measured rounding effects around $T_c$ may be explained quantitative and consistently in terms of the GL scenario, even up to the rounding onset temperatures if the quantum localization, associated with the shrinkage of the superconducting wavefunction, is taken into account. The implications of our results on the pseudogap physics of optimally-doped cuprates are also discussed.

We explore the signals of axion-like particles (ALPs) in flavor-changing neutral current (FCNC) processes. The most general effective linear Lagrangian for ALP couplings to the electroweak bosonic sector is considered, and its contribution to FCNC decays is computed up to one-loop order. The interplay between the different couplings opens new territory for experimental exploration, as analyzed here in the ALP mass range $0<m_a \lesssim 5$ GeV. When kinematically allowed, $K\to πν\barν$ decays provide the most stringent constraints for channels with invisible final states, while $B$-meson decays are more constraining for visible decay channels, such as displaced vertices in $B\to K^{(\ast)} μ^+ μ^-$ data. The complementarity with collider constraints is discussed as well.

We consider an enlarged color sector which solves the strong CP problem via new massless fermions. The spontaneous breaking of a unified color group into QCD and another confining group provides a source of naturally large axion mass $m_a$ due to small size instantons. This extra source of axion mass respects automatically the alignment of the vacuum, ensuring a low-energy CP-conserving vacuum. The mechanism does not appeal to a $Z_2$ 'mirror' copy of the SM, nor does it require any fine-tuning of the axion-related couplings at the unification scale. There is no light axion and uncharacteristically the lighter spectrum contains instead sterile fermions. The axion scale $f_a$ can be naturally brought down to a few TeV, with an exotic spectrum of colored pseudoscalars lighter than this scale, observable at colliders exclusively via strong interactions. The $\{m_a, f_a\}$ parameter space which allows a solution of the strong CP problem is thus enlarged well beyond that of invisible axion models.

We consider the renormalizable $SO(5)/SO(4)$ $σ$-model, in which the Higgs particle has a pseudo-Nambu-Goldstone boson character, and explore what the minimal field extension required to implement the Peccei-Quinn symmetry (PQ) is, within the partial compositeness scenario. It turns out that the minimal model does not require the enlargement of the exotic fermionic sector, but only the addition of a singlet scalar: it is sufficient that the exotic fermions involved in partial compositeness and the singlet scalar become charged under Peccei-Quinn transformations. We explore the phenomenological predictions for photonic signals in axion searches for all models discussed. Because of the constraints imposed on the exotic fermion sector by the Standard Model fermion masses, the expected range of allowed axion-photon couplings turns out to be generically narrowed with respect to that of standard invisible axion models, impacting the experimental quest.

Associated phenomenological signals at colliders are explored for both scenarios, deriving new bounds and analyzing future prospects, including LHC and High Luminosity LHC sensitivities. Mono-$Z$, mono-$W$, $W$-photon plus missing energy and on-shell top final states are most promising signals expected in both frameworks. In addition, non-standard Higgs decays and mono-Higgs signatures are especially prominent and expected to be dominant in non-linear realizations.

The Higgs portal to scalar Dark Matter is considered in the context of non-linearly realised electroweak symmetry breaking. We determine the dominant interactions of gauge bosons and the physical Higgs particle $h$ to a scalar singlet dark matter candidate. Phenomenological consequences are also studied in detail, including the possibility of distinguishing this scenario from the standard Higgs portal in which the electroweak symmetry breaking is linearly realised. Two features of significant impact are: i) the connection between the electroweak scale $v$ and the Higgs particle departs from the $(v+h)$ functional dependence, as the Higgs field is not necessarily an exact electroweak doublet; ii) the presence of specific couplings that arise at different order in the non-linear and in the linear expansions. These facts deeply affect the dark matter relic abundance, as well as the expected signals in direct and indirect searches and collider phenomenology, where Dark Matter production rates are enhanced with respect to the standard portal.

The temperature dependence of the in-plane magnetic penetration depth $λ_{ab}$ of Ba(Fe$_{1-x}$Ni$_x$)$_2$As$_2$ single crystals is determined directly from the shielding magnetic susceptibility, measured in the Meissner region with the field parallel to the ab layers. The do** levels studied cover the underdoped, optimally-doped and overdoped regimes. At temperatures below 0.5Tc a well-defined power-law behavior $λ_{ab}(T)-λ_{ab}(0)=AT^n$ (with n approximately 2.5) is observed. At lower temperatures (T<0.3Tc) the data are still consistent with n=2 and $A\propto T_c^{-3}$, as predicted by the strong pair-breaking scenario proposed by Gordon et al., Phys. Rev. B 81, 180501(R) (2010). The temperature dependence of the superfluid density $ρ_s\proptoλ_{ab}^{-2}$ presents a marked positive curvature just below Tc which is a sign of two-gap superconductivity. The analysis of $ρ_s(T)$ in terms of a two-gap model allowed to estimate parameters like the in-band and inter-band couplings, the relative weight of each band, and their dependence with the do** level. A comparison with $ρ_s(T)$ data obtained by using other techniques in compounds with a similar composition is also presented.

The adequacy of the mean-field Ginzburg-Landau descriptions is further confirmed when analyzing in terms of the GL scaling in the lowest-Landau-level (GL-LLL) approximation the magnetization data reported below Tc by L. Li and coworkers.

An experimental study on the design of counter-rotating axial-flow fans was carried out. The fans were designed using an inverse method. In particular, the system is designed to have a pure axial discharge flow. The counter-rotating fans operate in a ducted-flow configuration and the overall performances are measured in a normalized test bench. The rotation rate of each fan is independently controlled. The relative axial spacing between fans can vary from 17% to 310%. The results show that the efficiency is strongly increased compared to a conventional rotor or to a rotor-stator stage. The effects of varying the rotation rates ratio on the overall performances are studied and show that the system has a very flexible use, with a large patch of high efficient operating points in the parameter space. The increase of axial spacing causes only a small decrease of the efficiency

As part of the NASA-CNES agreement, the NASA Star and Exoplanet Database (NStED) serves as the official US portal for the public CoRoT data products. NStED is a general purpose archive with the aim of providing support for NASA's planet finding and characterization goals. Consequently, the NASA Exoplanet Science Institute (NExScI) developed, and NStED adapted, a periodogram service for CoRoT data to determine periods of variability phenomena and create phased photometric light curves. Through the NStED periodogram interface, the user may choose three different period detection algorithms to use on any photometric time series product, or even upload and analyze their own data. Additionally, the NStED periodogram is remotely accessed by the CoRoT archive as part of its interface. NStED is available at {\bf http://nsted.ipac.caltech.edu}.

The magnetization vector \vec M was measured in the reversible region of the mixed state of a high quality Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 single crystal as a function of temperature and for different magnetic field amplitudes and orientations. These measurements allowed to study the \vec M components perpendicular and parallel to the CuO2 layers (Mperp and Mpara, respectively) under arbitrary values for the corresponding components of the applied magnetic field, Hperp and Hpara. For temperatures close to Tc (in the critical fluctuation region) we observed Mperp(Hperp,Hpara) Mperp(Hperp,0) and Mpara(Hperp,Hpara)~0, as expected for an extremely anisotropic material. However, deviations from this behavior are observed at lower temperatures in the London region. In particular, the Mperp amplitude under a constant Hperp decreases on increasing Hpara. In turn, in spite of the experimental uncertainties affecting Mpara (mainly associated with the rotating sample holder), its amplitude under a constant Hpara becomes observable on increasing Hperp. Both effects lead to an angular slippage of the magnetization vector \vec M from the c crystallographic axis when the applied magnetic field is tilted from that axis. The Mperp behavior is phenomenologically explained in the framework of Lawrence-Doniach approaches for single layered superconductors by just assuming a slight angular dependence of the so-called vortex structure constant. However, the observed Mpara is orders of magnitude larger than expected, a fact which is related to the multilayered nature of the compound studied. Our present results also directly affect the interpretation of recent measurements of the magnetic torque in other extremely anisotropic high-Tc cuprates.

In this Comment we also show that, in contrast with their claims, these useful data may be explained at a quantitative level in terms of the Gaussian-Ginzburg-Landau approach for layered superconductors, extended by Carballeira and coworkers to high reduced-temperatures by introducing a total-energy cutoff [Phys.Rev.B 63, 144515 (2001)]. When combined, these two conclusions further suggest that the paraconductivity in cuprates is conventional, i.e., associated with fluctuating superconducting pairs above the mean-field critical temperature.

By using a high quality Tl2Ba2Ca2Cu3O10 (Tl-2223) single crystal as an example, the magnetization vector was probed in the reversible region of highly anisotropic cuprate superconductors. For that, we have measured its components along and transverse to the applied magnetic field for different crystal orientations. The analysis shows that the angular dependence of the perpendicular component of the magnetization vector follows the one predicted by a London-like approach which includes a contribution associated with the thermal fluctuations of the 2D vortex positions. For the Tl-2223 crystal studied here, a lower bound for the anisotropy factor was estimated to be about 190.
