The lack of both time-reversal and spatial inversion symmetry in polar magnets is a prerequisite for the occurrence of optical magnetoelectric effects such as nonreciprocal directional dichroism with the potential for the realization of optical diodes. In particular, antiferromagnetic materials with magnetic excitations in the THz range such as Fe2Mo3O8 are promising candidates for next-generation spintronic applications. In a combined experimental and theoretical effort we investigated the THz excitations of the polar honeycomb antiferromagnet Fe2Mo3O8 in external magnetic fields and their nonreciprocal directional dichroism, together with the temperature dependence of the electronic transitions in the mid- and near-infrared frequency range. Using an advanced single-ion approach for the Fe ions, we are able to describe optical excitations from the THz to the near-infrared frequency range quantitatively and successfully model the observed nonreciprocal directional dichroism in the THz regime.

In NiTe$_3$O$_6$ with a chiral crystal structure, we report on a giant natural optical rotation of the lowest-energy magnon. This polarization rotation, as large as 140 deg/mm, corresponds to a path difference between right and left circular polarizations that is comparable to the sample thickness. Natural optical rotation, being a measure of structural chirality, is highly unusual for long-wavelength magnons. The collinear antiferromagnetic order of NiTe$_3$O$_6$ makes this giant effect even more peculiar: Chirality of the crystal structure does not affect the magnetic ground state but is strongly manifested in the lowest excited state. We show that the dynamic magnetoelectric effect, turning this magnon to a magnetic- and electric-dipole active hybrid mode, generates the giant natural optical rotation. In finite magnetic fields, it also leads to a strong optical magnetochiral effect.

Magnetoelectric phenomena are intimately linked to relativistic effects and also require the material to break spatial inversion symmetry and time reversal invariance. Magnetoelectric coupling can substantially affect light-matter interaction and lead to non-reciprocal light propagation. Here, we confirm on a fully experimental basis, without invoking either symmetry-based or material-specific assumptions, that the optical magnetoelectric effect in materials with non-parallel magnetization ($\boldsymbol{M}$) and electric polarization ($\boldsymbol{P}$) generates a trilinear term in the refractive index, $δn\propto\boldsymbol{k}\cdot(\boldsymbol{P}\times\boldsymbol{M})$, where $\boldsymbol{k}$ is the propagation vector of light. Its sharp magnetoelectric resonances, that are simultaneously electric and magnetic dipole active excitations, make Co$_{2}$Mo$_3$O$_8$ an ideal compound to demonstrate this fundamental relation via independent variation of $\boldsymbol{M}$, $\boldsymbol{P}$ and $\boldsymbol{k}$. Remarkably, the material shows almost perfect one-way transparency in moderate magnetic fields at some of the magnetoelectric resonances.

Lacunar spinels with a chemical formula of $AM_4X_8$ form a populous family of narrow-gap semiconductors, which offer a fertile ground to explore correlation and quantum phenomena, including transition between Mott and spin-orbit insulator states, ferro/antiferroelectricity driven by cluster Jahn-Teller effect, and magnetoelectric response of magnetic skyrmions with polar dressing. The electronic and magnetic properties of lacunar spinels are determined to a large extent by their molecular-crystal-like structure. The interplay of electronic correlations with spin-orbit and vibronic couplings leads to a complex electronic structure already on the single-cluster level, which -- together with weaker inter-cluster interactions -- gives rise to a plethora of unconventional correlated states. This review primarily focuses on recent progresses in the field of optical, dielectric, and magnetoelectric properties on lacunar spinels. After introducing the main structural aspects, lattice dynamics and electronic structure of these compounds are discussed on the basis of optical spectroscopy measurements. Dielectric and polarization studies reveal the main characteristics of their low-temperature ferro- or antiferroelectric phases as well as orbital fluctuations in their high-temperature cubic state. Strong couplings between spin, lattice, and orbital degrees of freedom are manifested in singlet formation upon magnetostructural transitions, the emergence of various multiferroic phases, and exotic domain-wall functionalities.

We report on the low-frequency optical excitations in the multiferroic ground state of polycrystalline FeCr2S4 in the frequency range 0.3-3~THz and their changes upon applying external magnetic fields up to 7~T. In the ground state below the orbital-ordering temperature T_OO=9K we observe the appearance of several new modes. By applying the external magnetic field parallel and perpendicular to the propagation direction of the THz radiation, we can identify the strongest absorptions to be of predominantly electric-dipole origin. We discuss these modes as the low-energy electronic excitations of the Fe^{2+} ions (3d^6, S=2) in an tetrahedral environment. The eigenfrequencies and relative intensities of these absorption lines are satisfactorily reproduced by our calculation assuming an effective exchange field of 12.8 cm-1 at the Fe^{2+}-ions sites. The direction of the exchange field is found to be slightly tilted out of the ab-plane. With our approach we can also describe previously reported results from Mössbauer studies and the order of magnitude of the electric polarisation induced by orbital and non-collinear spin ordering.

We report on the structural and spectroscopic characterization of the multiferroic Fe$_2$Mo$_3$O$_8$. Synchrotron x-ray and neutron diffraction, as well as thermal expansion measurements reveal a lattice anomaly at $T_{\mathrm{N}}\simeq 60\,$K but do not show any symmetry lowering in the magnetically ordered state. The lattice parameter $c$ exhibits a non-monotonic behavior with a pronounced minimum around $200\,$K, which is also reflected in an anomalous behavior of some of the observed infrared-active optical excitations and parallels the onset of short-range magnetic order. The infrared reflectivity spectra measured between 5 and 300$\,$K in the frequency range of $100-8000\,$cm$^{-1}$ reveal most of the expected phonon modes in comparison with the eigenfrequencies obtained by density-functional calculations. The $A_1$ phonons show an overall hardening upon cooling, whereas a non-monotonic behavior is observed for some of the $E_1$ modes. These modes also show a strongly increased phonon lifetime below $T_\mathrm{N}$, which we associate with the quenched direction of the orbital moment in the magnetically ordered state. A similar increase is observed in the lifetime of the higher-lying $d$-$d$ excitations of the tetrahedral Fe$^{2+}$ site, which become clearly visible below $T_\mathrm{N}$ only.

We report on optical excitations in the magnetically ordered phases of multiferroic Fe$_{1.86}$Zn$_{0.14}$Mo$_3$O$_8$ in the frequency range from 10-130 cm$^{-1}$ (0.3-3.9 THz). In the collinear easy-axis antiferromagnetic phase below $T_N=50$~K eleven optically active modes have been observed in finite magnetic fields, assuming that the lowest-lying mode is doubly degenerate. The large number of modes reflects either a more complex magnetic structure than in pure Fe$_{2}$Mo$_3$O$_8$ or that spin stretching modes become active in addition to the usual spin precessional modes. Their magnetic field dependence, for fields applied along the easy axis, reflects the irreversible magnetic-field driven phase transition from the antiferromagnetic ground state to a ferrimagnetic state, while the number of modes remains unchanged in the covered frequency region. We determined selection rules for some of the AFM modes by investigating all polarization configurations and identified magnetic- and electric-dipole active modes as well. In addition to these sharp resonances, a broad electric-dipole active excitation band, which is not influenced by the external magnetic field, occurs below $T_N$ with an onset at 12 cm$^{-1}$. We are able to model this absorption band as a vibronic excitation related to the lowest-lying Fe$^{2+}$ electronic states in tetrahedral environment.

Reproducing the electronic structure of AM$_4$X$_8$ lacunar spinels with a breathing pyrochlore lattice is a great theoretical challenge due to the interplay of various factors. The character of the M$_4$X$_4$ cluster orbitals is critically influenced by the Jahn-Teller instability, the spin-orbit interaction, and also by the magnetic state of the clusters. Consequently, to reproduce the narrow-gap semiconducting nature of these moderately correlated materials requires advanced approaches, since the strength of the inter-cluster hop** is strongly affected by the character of the cluster orbitals. In order to provide a solid experimental basis for theoretical studies, we performed broadband optical spectroscopy on a large set of lacunar spinels, with systematically changing ions at the A and M sites as well as the ligand (A=Ga, Ge, Al; M=V, Mo, Nb, Ta; X=S, Se). Our study covers the range of phonon excitations and also electronic transitions near the gap edge. In the phonon excitation spectrum a limited subset of the symmetry allowed modes is observed in the cubic state, with a few additional modes emerging upon the symmetry-lowering structural transition. All the infrared active modes are assigned to vibrations of the ligands and ions at the A sites, with no obvious contribution from the M-site ions. Concerning the electronic states, we found that all compounds are narrow-gap semiconductors ($E_\mathrm{g} = 130 - 350\,$meV) already in their room-temperature cubic state and their structural transitions induce weak, if any, changes in the band gap. The gap value is decreased when substituting S with Se and also when replacing $3d$ ions by $4d$ or $5d$ ions at the M sites.

$^7$Li nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) and terahertz (THz) spectroscopies are used to probe magnetic excitations and their field dependence in the hyperhoneycomb Kitaev magnet $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$. Spin-lattice relaxation rate ($1/T_1$) measured down to 100\,mK indicates gapless nature of the excitations at low fields (below $H_c\simeq 2.8$\,T), in contrast to the gapped magnon excitations found in the honeycomb Kitaev magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$ at zero applied magnetic field. At higher temperatures in $β$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$, $1/T_1$ passes through a broad maximum without any clear anomaly at the Néel temperature $T_N\simeq 38$\,K, suggesting the abundance of low-energy excitations that are indeed observed as two peaks in the THz spectra, both correspond to zone-center magnon excitations. At higher fields (above $H_c$), an excitation gap opens, and a re-distribution of the THz spectral weight is observed without any indication of an excitation continuum, in contrast to $α$-RuCl$_3$ where an excitation continuum was reported.

Raman and THz spectroscopy of magnetic excitations confirm that the low-temperature antiferromagnetic ordered phase features a broad Raman continuum, together with two magnon-like excitations at 2.7 and 3.6 meV, respectively. The continuum strength is maximized as long-range order is suppressed by an external magnetic field. The state above the field-induced quantum phase transition around 7.5 T is characterized by a gapped multi-particle continuum out of which a two-particle bound state emerges, together with a well-defined single-particle excitation at lower energy. Exact diagonalization calculations demonstrate that Kitaev and off-diagonal exchange terms in the Fleury-Loudon operator are crucial for the occurrence of these features in the Raman spectra. Our study firmly establishes the partially-polarized quantum disordered character of the high-field phase.

We report magnetic, thermodynamic, thermal expansion, and on detailed optical experiments on the layered compound $α$-RuCl$_3$ focusing on the THz and sub-gap optical response across the structural phase transition from the monoclinic high-temperature to the rhombohedral low-temperature structure, where the stacking sequence of the molecular layers is changed. This type of phase transition is characteristic for a variety of tri-halides crystallizing in a layered honeycomb-type structure and so far is unique, as the low-temperature phase exhibits the higher symmetry. One motivation is to unravel the microscopic nature of spin-orbital excitations via a study of temperature and symmetry-induced changes. We document a number of highly unusual findings: A characteristic two-step hysteresis of the structural phase transition, accompanied by a dramatic change of the reflectivity. An electronic excitation, which appears in a narrow temperature range just across the structural phase transition, and a complex dielectric loss spectrum in the THz regime, which could indicate remnants of Kitaev physics. Despite significant symmetry changes across the monoclinic to rhombohedral phase transition, phonon eigenfrequencies and the majority of spin-orbital excitations are not strongly influenced. Obviously, the symmetry of the single molecular layers determine the eigenfrequencies of most of these excitations. Finally, from this combined terahertz, far- and mid-infrared study we try to shed some light on the so far unsolved low energy (< 1eV) electronic structure of the ruthenium $4d^5$ electrons in $α$-RuCl$_3$.

We report on terahertz spectroscopy of quantum spin dynamics in $α$-RuCl$_3$, a system proximate to the Kitaev honeycomb model, as a function of temperature and magnetic field. An extended magnetic continuum develops below the structural phase transition at $T_{s2}=62$K. With the onset of a long-range magnetic order at $T_N=6.5$K, spectral weight is transferred to a well-defined magnetic excitation at $\hbar ω_1 = 2.48$meV, which is accompanied by a higher-energy band at $\hbar ω_2 = 6.48$meV. Both excitations soften in magnetic field, signaling a quantum phase transition at $B_c=7$T where we find a broad continuum dominating the dynamical response. Above $B_c$, the long-range order is suppressed, and on top of the continuum, various emergent magnetic excitations evolve. These excitations follow clear selection rules and exhibit distinct field dependencies, characterizing the dynamical properties of the field-induced quantum spin liquid.

The phase transition shows an extreme and unusual hysteretic behavior, which extends from 60 to 166 K. In passing this phase transition, in the complete frequency range investigated we found a significant reflectance change, which amounts almost a factor of two. We provide a broadband spectrum of dielectric constant, dielectric loss and optical conductivity from the THz to the mid infrared regime and study in detail the phonon response and the low-lying electronic density of states. We provide evidence for the onset of an optical energy gap, which is of order 200 meV, in good agreement with the gap derived from measurements of the DC electrical resistivity. We report on THz time-domain spectroscopy on multiferroic GeV4S8, which undergoes orbital ordering at a Jahn-Teller transition at 30.5 K and exhibits antiferromagnetic order below 14.6 K. The THz experiments are complemented by dielectric experiments at audio and radio frequencies. We identify a low-lying excitation close to 15 cm-1, which is only weakly temperature dependent and probably corresponds to a molecular excitation within the electronic level scheme of the V4 clusters. In addition, we detect complex temperature-dependent behavior of a low-lying phononic excitation, closely linked to the onset of orbitally-driven ferroelectricity. In the high-temperature cubic phase, which is paramagnetic and orbitally disordered, this excitation is of relaxational character, becomes an overdamped Lorentzian mode in the orbitally ordered phase below the Jahn-Teller transition, and finally appears as well-defined phonon excitation in the antiferromagnetic state. Abrupt changes in real and imaginary parts of the complex dielectric permittivity show that orbital ordering appears via a structural phase transition with strong first-order character and that the onset of antiferromagnetic order is accompanied by significant structural changes, which are of first-order character, too. Dielectric spectroscopy documents that, at low frequencies, significant dipolar relaxations are present in the orbitally ordered, paramagnetic phase only. In contrast to the closely related GaV4S8, this relaxation dynamics that most likely mirrors coupled orbital and polar fluctuations does not seem to be related to the dynamic processes detected in the THz regime.
