Interfaces between materials with different electronic ground states have become powerful platforms for creating and controlling novel quantum states of matter, in which inversion symmetry breaking and other effects at the interface may introduce additional electronic states. Among the emergent phenomena, superconductivity is of particular interest. In this work, by depositing metal films on a newly identified topological semimetal tungsten carbide (WC) single crystal, we have obtained interfacial topological superconductivity evidenced from soft point contact spectroscopy. This very robust phenomenon has been demonstrated for a wide range of Metal/WC interfaces, involving both non-magnetic and ferromagnetic films, and the superconducting transition temperatures is surprisingly insensitive to the magnetism of thin films, suggesting a spin-triplet pairing superconducting state. The results offer an opportunity to implement topological superconductivity using convenient thin film coating method.

We report the first experimental results of the magnetoresistance, Hall effect, and quantum Shubnikov-de Haas oscillations on single crystals of ZrTe, which was recently predicted to be a new type of topological semimetal hosting both triply degenerate crossing points and Weyl fermion state. The analysis of Hall effect and quantum oscillations indicate that ZrTe is a multiband system with low carrier density, high carrier mobility, small cross-sectional area of Fermi surface, and light cyclotron effective mass, as observed in many topological semimetals. Meanwhile, the angular dependence of the magnetoresistance and the quantum-oscillation frequencies further suggest that ZrTe possesses a three-dimensional Fermi surface that is rather complex. Our results provide a new platform to realize exotic quantum phenomena related to the new three-component fermions distinct from Dirac and Weyl fermions.

We report the magnetoresistance (MR), Hall effect, and de Haas-van Alphen (dHvA) effect studies of the single crystals of tungsten carbide, WC, which is predicted to be a new type of topological semimetal with triply degenerate nodes. With the magnetic field rotated in the plane perpendicular to the current, WC shows field induced metal to insulator like transition and large nonsaturating quadratic MR at low temperature. As the magnetic field parallel to the current, a pronounced negative longitudinal MR only can be observed when the current flows along the certain direction. Hall effect indicates WC is a perfect compensated semimetal, which may be related to the large nonsaturating quadratic MR. The analysis of dHvA oscillations reveals that WC is a multiband system with small cross-sectional areas of Fermi surface and light cyclotron effective masses. Our results indicate that WC is an ideal platform to study the recently proposed New Fermions with triply degenerate crossing points.

We have investigated the magnetoresistance (MR) and Hall resistivity properties of the single crystals of tantalum sulfide, Ta3S2, which was recently predicted to be a new type II Weyl semimetal. Large MR (up to ~8000% at 2 K and 16 T), field-induced metal-insulator-like transition and nonlinear Hall resistivity are observed at low temperatures. The large MR shows a strong dependence on the field orientation, leading to a giant anisotropic magnetoresistance (AMR) effect. For the field applied along the b-axis (B//b), MR exhibits quadratic field dependence at low fields and tends towards saturation at high fields; while for B//a, MR presents quadratic field dependence at low fields and becomes linear at high fields without any trend towards saturation. The analysis of the Hall resistivity data indicates the coexistence of a large number of electrons with low mobility and a small number of holes with high mobility. Shubnikov-de Haas (SdH) oscillation analysis reveals three fundamental frequencies originated from the three-dimensional (3D) Fermi surface (FS) pockets. We find that the semi-classical multiband model is sufficient to account for the experimentally observed MR in Ta3S2.

There is a long-standing confusion concerning the physical origin of the anomalous resistivity peak in transition metal pentatelluride HfTe5. Several mechanisms, like the formation of charge density wave or polaron, have been proposed, but so far no conclusive evidence has been presented. In this work, we investigate the unusual temperature dependence of magneto-transport properties in HfTe5. We find that a three dimensional topological Dirac semimetal state emerges only at around Tp (at which the resistivity shows a pronounced peak), as manifested by a large negative magnetoresistance. This accidental Dirac semimetal state mediates the topological quantum phase transition between the two distinct weak and strong topological insulator phases in HfTe5. Our work not only provides the first evidence of a temperature-induced critical topological phase transition in HfTe5, but also gives a reasonable explanation on the long-lasting question.

The interplay between magnetism and superconductivity is one of the dominant themes in the study of unconventional superconductors, such as high-Tc cuprates, iron pnictides and heavy fermions. In such systems, the same d- or f-electrons tend to form magnetically ordered states and participate in building up a high density of states at the Fermi level, which is responsible for the superconductivity. Charge-density-wave (CDW) is another fascinating collective quantum phenomenon in some low dimensional materials, like the prototypical transition-metal poly-chalcogenides, in which CDW instability is frequently found to accompany with superconducting transition at low temperatures. Remarkably, similar to the antiferromagnetic superconductors, superconductivity can also be achieved upon suppression of CDW order via chemical do** or applied pressure in 1T-TiSe2. However, in these CDW superconductors, the two ground states are believed to occur in different parts of Fermi surface (FS) sheets, derived mainly from chalcogen p-states and transition metal d-states, respectively. The origin of superconductivity and its interplay with CDW instability has not yet been unambiguously determined. Here we report on the discovery of bulk superconductivity in Pd-intercalated CDW RETen (RE=rare earth; n=2.5, 3) compounds, which belong to a large family of rare-earth poly-chalcogenides with CDW instability usually develo** in the planar square nets of tellurium at remarkably high transition temperature and the electronic properties are also dominated by chalcogen p-orbitals. Our study demonstrates that the intercalation of palladium leads to the suppression of the CDW order and the emergence of the superconductivity. Our finding could provide an ideal model system for comprehensive studies of the interplay between CDW and superconductivity.

A series of polycrystalline SmFeAs1-xOx bulks was prepared to systematically investigate the influence of sample density on flux pinning properties. Different sample densities were achieved by controlling the pelletizing pressure. The superconducting volume fraction, the critical current densities Jcm and the flux pinning force densities Fp were estimated from the magnetization measurements. Experimental results manifest that: (1) the superconducting volume fraction decreases with the decreasing of sample density. (2) The Jcm values have the similar trend except for the sample with very high density may due to different connectivity and pinning mechanism. Moreover, The Jcm(B) curve develops a peak effect at approximately the same field at which the high-density sample shows a kink. (3) The Fp(B) curve of the high-density sample shows a low-field peak and a high-field peak at several temperatures, which can be explained by improved intergranular current, while only one peak can be observed in Fp(B) of the low-density samples. Based on the scaling behaviour of flux pinning force densities, the main intragranular pinning is normal point pinning.

Temperature dependent resistivity of the iron-based superconductor NdFeAsO0.88F0.12 was measured under different applied fields and excitation currents. Arrhenius plot shows an anomalous tail effect, which contains obvious two resistivity drop** stages. The first is caused by the normal superconducting transition, and the second is supposed to be related to the weak-link between the grains. A model for the resistivity drop** related to the weak-link behavior is proposed, which is based on the Josephson junctions formed by the impurities in grain boundaries like FeAs, Sm2O3 and cracks together with the adjacent grains. These Josephson junctions can be easily broken by the applied fields and the excitations currents, leading to the anomalous resistivity tail in many polycrystalline iron-based superconductors. The calculated resistivity drop** agrees well with the experimental data, which manifests the correctness of the explanation of the obtained anomalous tail effect.

A strong temperature dependent Hall coefficient was found and attributed to the partial gap** of the Fermi surface up to the temperature of 160 K which was predicted and supported by the emergence of the pseudogap. The charge-carrier density as well as the effective mass were also obtained and discussed in detail.

In contrast to LaNiAsO0.9F0.1 where the superconducting gap is shown to be isotropic, the spin lattice relaxation rate 1/T1 in the Fe-arsenides decreases below Tc with no coherence peak and shows a step-wise variation at low temperatures. The Knight shift decreases below Tc and shows a step-wise T variation as well. These results indicate spinsinglet superconductivity with multiple gaps in the Fe-arsenides. The Fe antiferromagnetic spin fluctuations are anisotropic and weaker compared to underdoped copper-oxides or cobalt-oxide superconductors, while there is no significant electron correlations in LaNiAsO0.9F0.1. We will discuss the implications of these results and highlight the importance of the Fermi surface topology.

Both DC and AC magnetization measurements were performed on the NdFeAsO0.88F0.12 superconductor to investigate the influence of magnetism on the superconducting properties of this system. The crossover of the ZFC and FC magnetic susceptibility curves under 7.5KOe was observed. The imaginary component of the first harmonics of the AC magnetic susceptibility, increases with the increasing DC field below 10K and shows frequency dependency under 7.5KOe at low temperature. The paramagnetism of Nd3+ ions tilts the magnetic hysteresis loops and broadens the hysteresis width. After correction for the paramagnetism, the field and temperature dependence of intrinsic Jcm was obtained and compared with the experimentally obtained total Jcm. The origin of the abnormal behavior of magnetization was investigated and attributed to a magnetic background, which was speculated to be caused by the spin-glass state. However, this magnetic background does not affect the flux pinning properties in this sample. The related mechanism was discussed.

Polycrystalline NdFeAsO0.88F0.12 superconductors prepared by high pressure (HP) and ambient pressure (AP) method were comparatively studied by magnetization and transport measurements. Upper critical field (Hc2), irreversibility field (Hirr) and the anisotropy parameter were estimated from resistance transition curves. The broadening of transition width was observed, and ascribed to both Hc2 anisotropy and superconductivity inhomogeneity of samples. Magnetic hysteresis loops (MHLs) in low fields were measured to detect the trace of weak-link behavior. The reclosed hysteresis loops in low fields manifest that there are weak-links in both samples. Magnetization critical current density Jcm were derived from MHLs. High-pressure synthesized sample shows higher Jcm. However, by means of direct transport I-V measurements, transport critical current density Jct was very low. The Jct values for two samples are comparable. Large discrepancies between Jcm and Jct also indicate that there are weak-links in both samples. The relative mechanism is discussed in detail.

We report a direct current transport study of the local intergrain connections in a polycrystalline SmFeAsO0.85 (Sm1111) bulk, for which we earlier estimated significant intergranular critical current density Jc. Our combined low temperature laser scanning microscopy (LTLSM) and scanning electron microscopy observations revealed only few grain-to-grain transport current paths, most of which switched off when a magnetic field was applied. These regions typically occur where current crosses Fe-As, which is a normal-metal wetting-phase that surrounds Sm1111 grains, producing a dense array of superconducting-normal-superconducting contacts. Our study points out the need to reduce the amount of grain boundary-wetting Fe-As phase, as well as the crack density within pnictide grains, as these defects produce a multiply connected current-blocking network.

High resolution transmission electron microscopy study revealed that the irradiation produced columnar-like defects. The effect of these defects on the irreversible magnetisation in polycrystalline randomly oriented fragments was studied as a function of field angle and field sweep rate. We find that the critical current density is enhanced at fields below the matching field (~1 Tesla) but only marginally. The pinning enhancement is anisotropic and maximum along the defect direction at high temperatures but the pinning then becomes more isotropic at low temperatures. The creep rate is suppressed at high temperatures and at fields below the matching field, indicating the columnar defects are efficient pinning sites at these H and T conditions.

Magneto optical images show that the highest Jc values are observed within single grains oriented with their c axes perpendicular to the observation plane, implying that the intragranular current is anisotropic. The much lower intergranular Jc is at least partially due to many extrinsic factors, because cracks and a ubiquitous wetting As-Fe phase are found at many grain boundaries. However, some grain boundaries are structurally clean under high resolution transmission electron microscopy examination. Because the whole-sample global Jc(5K) values of the two samples examined are 1000-4000 A/cm2, some 10-40 times that found in random, polycrystalline YBa2Cu3O7-x, it appears that the dominant obstruction to intergranular current flow of many present samples is extrinsic, though some intrinsic limitation of current flow across grain boundaries cannot yet be ruled out.

We find that PrFeAsO exhibits an abrupt structural phase transitions at 153 K, followed by static long range antiferromagnetic order at 127 K. Both the structural distortion and magnetic order are identical to other rare-earth oxypnictides. Electron-do** the system with either Fluorine or oxygen deficiency suppresses the structural distortion and static long range antiferromagnetic order, therefore placing these materials into the same class of FeAs-based superconductors.

Identifying the symmetry of the superconducting order parameter in the recently-discovered ferro-oxypnictide family of superconductors, RFeAsO$_{1-x}$F$_{y}$, where $R$ is a rare earth, is a high priority. Many of the proposed order parameters have internal $π$ phase shifts, like the d-wave order found in the cuprates, which would result in direction-dependent phase shifts in tunnelling. In dense polycrystalline samples, these phase shifts in turn would result in spontaneous orbital currents and magnetization in the superconducting state. We perform scanning SQUID microscopy on a dense polycrystalline sample of \NdFeAsO$_{0.94}$F$_{0.06}$ with $T_c=48$ K and find no such spontaneous currents, ruling out many of the proposed order parameters.

Like the cuprates, the oxypnictides seem to manifest an interleaving of charge donor and superconducting layers emerging upon do** of an antiferromagnetic parent semi-metal. Here we report magneto-transport measurements of three rare earth (Re = La, Nd, Sm) oxypnicide compounds with the transition temperatures near the maximum reported to date, in very high DC and pulsed magnetic fields up to 45 and 54 T, respectively. Our resistivity, Hall coefficient and critical magnetic fields data suggest that these oxypnictide superconductors bridge the gap between MgB$_2$ and YBaCu$_3$O$_{7-x}$ as far as electromagnetic and vortex properties are concerned.

Here we use global and local magnetometry and Hall probe imaging to investigate the electromagnetic connectivity of the superconducting current path in the oxygen-deficient fluorine-free Nd-based oxypnictides. High resolution transmission electron microscopy and scanning electron microscopy show strongly-layered crystallites, evidence for a ~ 5nm amorphous oxide around individual particles, and second phase neodymium oxide which may be responsible for the large paramagnetic background at high field and at high temperatures.
From global magnetometry and electrical transport measurements it is clear that there is a small supercurrent flowing on macroscopic sample dimensions (mm), with a lower bound for the average (over this length scale) critical current density of the order of 103 A/cm2. From magnetometry of powder samples and local Hall probe imaging of a single large conglomerate particle ~120 microns it is clear that on smaller scales, there is better current connectivity with a critical current density of the order of 5 x 104 A/cm2. We find enhanced flux creep around the second peak anomaly in the magnetisation curve and an irreversibility line significantly below Hc2(T) as determined by ac calorimetry.

Early studies have found quasi-reversible magnetization curves in polycrystalline bulk rare-earth iron oxypnictides that suggest either wide-spread obstacles to intergranular current or very weak vortex pinning. In the present study of polycrystalline samarium and neodymium rare-earth iron oxypnictide samples made by high pressure synthesis, the hysteretic magnetization is significantly enhanced. Magneto optical imaging and study of the field dependence of the remanent magnetization as a function of particle size both show that global currents over the whole sample do exist but that the intergranular and intragranular current densities have distinctively different temperature dependences and differ in magnitude by about 1000. Assuming that the highest current density loops are restricted to circulation only within grains leads to values of ~5 MA/cm2 at 5 K and self field, while whole-sample current densities, though two orders of magnitude lower are 1000-10000 A/cm2, some two orders of magnitude higher than in random polycrystalline cuprates. We cannot yet be certain whether this large difference in global and intragrain current density is intrinsic to the oxypnictides or due to extrinsic barriers to current flow, because the samples contain significant second phase, some of which wets the grain boundaries and produces evidences of SNS proximity effect in the whole sample critical current.

Through extensive measurements, we have identified several common features in the electronic structure of these Fe-based compounds: (1). 0.2 eV feature in the valence band; (2). A universal 13~16 meV feature; (3). A clear Fermi cutoff showing zero leading-edge shift in the superconducting state;(4). Lack of superconducting coherence peak(s); (5). Near EF spectral weight suppression with decreasing temperature. These universal features can provide important information about band structure, superconducting gap and pseudogap in these Fe-based materials.

Since the discovery of high transition-temperature (Tc) superconductivity in copper oxides two decades ago, continuous efforts have been devoted to searching for similar phenomenon in other compounds. With the exception of MgB2 (Tc =39 K), however, Tc is generally far lower than desired. Recently, breakthrough has been made in a new class of oxypnictide compounds. Following the initial discovery of superconductivity in LaO1-x FxFeAs (Tc =26 K), Tc onset has been raised to 55 K in ReO1-xFxFeAs (Re: Ce, Pr, Nd, Sm). Meanwhile, unravelling the nature of the energy associated with the formation of current-carrying pairs (Cooper pairs), referred to as the superconducting energy gap, is the first and vital step towards understanding why the superconductivity occurs at such high temperature and is also important for finding superconductors with still higher Tc. Here we show that, on the basis of the nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) measurements in PrO0.89F0.11FeAs (Tc =45 K), the Cooper pair is in the spin-singlet state (two spins are anti-paralleled), with two energy gaps opening below Tc. The results strongly suggest the existence of nodes (zeros) in the gap. None of superconductors known to date has such unique gap features, although copper-oxides and MgB2 share part of them.

Although M(T,H) at 55 < T < 140K exhibits a clear Curie-Weiss temperature dependence corresponding to the Neel temperature TN ~ 11-12K, the behavior of M(T,H) below Tc is only consistent with either paramagnetism of weakly interacting magnetic moments or a spin glass state. We suggest that the anomalous magnetic behavior of an unusual high-field paramagnetic superconductor Nd(O1-xFx)FeAs is mostly determined by the magnetic Nd ions.

The transition temperature T_c, defined as the point at the maximum slope of superconducting transition, was enhanced almost linearly by hydrostatic pressure, yielding a dT_c/dP of about 1.2 K/GPa. Differential diamagnetic susceptibility curves indicate that the underlying superconducting state is complicated. It is suggested that pressure plays an important role on pushing low T_c superconducting phase toward the main (optimal) superconducting phase.

By subtracting this additional contribution, the zero field specific heat of MgCNi$_3$ can be well described by the BCS theory with the gap ratio ($Δ/k_BT_c$) determined by the previous tunneling measurements. The conventional s-wave pairing state is further proved by the magnetic field dependence of the specific heat at low temperatures and the behavior of the upper critical field.

The influence of carbon concentration on the superconductivity (SC) in MgC$_{x}$Ni$_3$ has been investigated by measuring the low temperature specific heat combined with first principles electronic structure calculation. It is found that the specific heat coefficient $γ_n=C_{en}/T$ of the superconducting sample ($x\approx1$) in normal state is twice that of the non-superconducting one ($x\approx 0.85$). The comparison of measured $γ_n$ and the calculated electronic density of states (DOS) shows that the effective mass renormalization changes remarkably as the carbon concentration changes. The large mass renormalization for the superconducting sample and the low $T_{c}$(7K) indicate that more than one kind of boson mediated electron-electron interactions exist in MgC$_{x}$Ni$_3$.

For preparing MgCNi3 superconductor, the optimum composition of starting materials is MgC1.45Ni3 with 20wt.% excess of Mg of the stoichiometric composition. In MgCNi3-xCox system, a continuous solid solution is formed, lattice parameter decreases slightly and TC decreases obviously with increasing x. A suppression of superconductivity is observed due to the substitution of Co (Mn) for Ni. The suppression effect is smaller for the substitution of Co than that of Mn.

The superconducting and structural properties of a series of Mg1-xAlxB2 samples have been investigated. X-ray diffraction results confirmed the existence of a structural transition associated with the significant change in inter-boron layer distance as reported previously by Slusky et al. Moreover,transmission-electron-microscopy observations revealed the existence of a superstructure with doubled lattice constant along the c-axis direction. We propose that this superstructure is essentially related to the structural transition. The modifications of superconducting transition temperature Tc, the normal state resistivity, and the upper critical field Bc2 by Al do** are discussed in terms of Al-substitution induced changes in the electronic structure at the Fermi energy.

Magnetic critical current density and relaxation rate have been measured on $MgB_2$ bulks from 1.6 K to $T_c$ at magnetic fields up to 8 Tesla. A vortex phase diagram is depicted based on these measurement. Two phase boundaries $H_{irr}^{bulk}(T)$ and $H_{irr}^{g}(T)$ characterizing different irreversible flux motions are found. The $H_{irr}^{bulk}(T)$ is characterized by the appearance of the linear resistivity and is attributed to quantum vortex melting induced by quantum fluctuation of vortices in the rather clean system. The second boundary $ H_{irr}^g(T) $ reflects the irreversible flux motion in some local regions due to either very strong pinning or the surface barrier on the tiny grains.

The penetration depth $λ$ is calculated from the $H_{c1}$ data. It is found that a linear relation of $H_{c1}(T)$ appears in whole temperature region below $T_c$. Furthermore a finite slope of $dH_{c1}/dT$ and $dλ(T)/dT$ remains down to the lowest temperature (2 K). These are inconsistent with the expectation for a widely thought s-wave superconductivity in $MgB_2$.

By using transport and magnetic measurement, the upper critical field $H_{c2}(T)$ and the irreversibility line $H_{irr}(T)$ has been determined. A big separation between $H_{c2}(0)$ and $H_{irr}(0)$ has been found showing the existence of a quantum vortex liquid state induced by quantum fluctuation of vortices in the new superconductor $MgB_2$. Further investigation on the magnetic relaxation shows that both the quantum tunneling and the thermally activated flux creep weakly depends on temperature. But when the melting field $H_{irr}$ is approached, a drastic rising of the relaxation rate is observed. This may imply that the melting of the vortex matter at a finite temperature is also induced by the quantum fluctuation of vortices.
