This paper is a celebration of the frontiers of science. Goodenough, the maestro who transformed energy usage and technology through the invention of the lithium ion battery, opens the programme, reflecting on the ultimate limits of battery technology. This applied theme continues through the subsequent pieces on energy related topics (the sodium ion battery and artificial fuels, by Mansson) and the ultimate challenge for 3 dimensional printing the eventual production of life, by Atala. A passage by Alexander follows, reflecting on a related issue: How might an artificially produced human being behave? Next comes a consideration of consiousness and free will by Allen and Lidstrom. Further voices and new instruments enter as Bowen, Mauranyapin and Madsen discuss whether dynamical processes of single molecules might be observed in their native state. The exploitation of chaos in science and technology, applications of Bose Einstein condensates and a consideration of the significance of entropy follow in pieces by Reichl, Rasel and Allen, respectively. Katsnelson and Koonin then discuss the potential generalisation of thermodynamic concepts in the context of biological evolution. Entering with the music of the cosmos, Yasskin discusses whether we might be able to observe torsion in the geometry of the universe. The crescendo comes with the crisis of singularities, their nature and whether they can be resolved through quantum effects, in the composition of Coley. The climax is Krenn, Melvin and Zeilinger consideration of how computer code can be autonomously surprising and creative. In a harmonious counterpoint, Yampolskiy concludes that such code is not yet able to take responsibility for coauthoring a paper.

Microstructura lly clean, isov alently P-doped BaFe2As2 (Ba-122) single crystalline thin films have been prepared on MgO (001) substrates by molecular beam epitaxy. These films show a superconducting transition temperature (Tc) of over 30 K although P content is around 0.22, which is lower than the optimal one for single crystals (i.e., 0.33). The enhanced Tc at this do** level is attributed to the in-plane tensile strain. The strained film shows high transport self-field critical current densities (Jc) of over 6 MA/cm2 at 4.2 K, which are among the highest for Fe based superconductors (FeSCs). In-field Jc exceeds 0.1 MA/cm2 at m0H = 35 T for H||ab and m0H = 18 T for H||c at 4.2 K, respectively, in spite of moderate upper critical fields compared to other FeSCs with similar Tc. Structural investigations reveal no defects or misoriented grains pointing to strong pinning centers. We relate this unexpected high Jc to a strong enhancement of the vortex core energy at optimal Tc, driven by in-plane strain and do**. These unusually high Jc make P-doped Ba-122 very favorable for high-field magnet applications.

Angle-resolved transport measurements revealed that planar defects dominate flux pinning in the investigated Co-doped BaFe2As2 thin film. For any given field and temperature, the critical current depends only on the angle between the crystallographic c-axis and the applied magnetic field but not on the angle between the current and the field. The critical current is therefore limited only by the in-plane component of the Lorentz force but independent of the out-of-plane component, which is entirely balanced by the pinning force exerted by the planar defects. This one-dimensional pinning behavior shows similarities and differences to intrinsic pinning in layered superconductors.

The anisotropy of the critical current density Jc depends in general on both the properties of the flux lines (such as line tension, coherence length and penetration depth) and the properties of the defects (such as density, shape, orientation etc.). Whereas the Jc anisotropy in microstructurally clean films can be scaled to an effective magnetic field containing the Ginzburg-Landau anisotropy term, it is in general not possible (or only in a limited field range) for samples containing extended defects. Here, the Jc anisotropy of a Co-doped BaFe2As2 sample with 45° [001] tilt grain boundaries (GBs), i.e. grain boundaries created by 45° in-plane rotated grains, as well as extended Fe particles is investigated. This microstructure leads to c-axis correlated pinning, both due to the GBs and the Fe particles and manifests in a c-axis peak in the Jc anisotropy at low magnetic fields and a deviation from the anisotropic Ginzburg-Landau scaling at higher fields. Strong pinning at ellipsoidal extended defects, i.e. the Fe particles, is discussed, and the full Jc anisotropy is fitted successfully with the vortex path model. The results are compared to a sample without GBs and Fe particles. 45° GBs seem to be good pinning centers rather than detrimental to current flow.

High critical current density values larger than 1 MA/cm2 in self field in liquid helium are reached together with a very weak dependence on the magnetic field and a complete isotropy. Analysis through Transmission Electron Microscopy evidences the presence of defects looking like lattice disorder at a very small scale, between 5 and 20 nm, which are thought to be responsible for such isotropic behavior in contrast to what observed on SrTiO3, where defects parallel to the c-axis enhance pinning in that direction

The recently discovered oxypnictide superconductor SmFeAs(O,F) is the most attractive material among the Fe-based superconductors due to its highest transition temperature of 56 K and potential for high-field performance. In order to exploit this new material for superconducting applications, the knowledge and understanding of its electro-magnetic properties are needed. Recent success in fabricating epitaxial SmFeAs(O,F) thin films opens a great opportunity to explore their transport properties. Here we report on a high critical current density of over 10^5 A/cm^2 at 45 T and 4.2 K for both main field orientations, feature favourable for high-field magnet applications. Additionally, by investigating the pinning properties, we observed a dimensional crossover between the superconducting coherence length and the FeAs interlayer distance at 30-40 K, indicative of a possible intrinsic Josephson junction in SmFeAs(O,F) at low temperatures that can be employed in electronics applications such as a terahertz radiation source and a superconducting Qubit.

We report on the transport properties of clean, epitaxial Fe(Se,Te) thin films prepared on Fe-buffered MgO (001) single crystalline substrates by pulsed laser deposition. Near Tc a steep slope of the upper critical field for H||ab was observed (74.1 T/K), leading to a very short out-of-plane coherence length, ξc, of 0.2 nm, yielding 2ξc(0) approximately 0.4 nm. This value is shorter than the interlayer distance (0.605 nm) between Fe-Se(Te) planes, indicative of modulation of the superconducting order parameter along the c-axis. An inverse correlation between the power law exponent N of the electric field-current density (E-J) curve and the critical current density, Jc, has been observed at 4 K, when the orientation of H was close to the ab-plane. These results prove the presence of intrinsic pinning in Fe(Se,Te). A successful scaling of the angular dependent Jc and the corresponding exponent N can be realized by the anisotropic Ginzburg Landau approach with appropriate Γvalues 2~3.5. The temperature dependence of Γbehaves almost identically to that of the penetration depth anisotropy.

For all films a reaction layer is formed at the interface confirmed by X-ray diffraction and by transmission electron microscopy. The superconducting transition temperature of the film on CaF2 is around 27 K, whereas the corresponding values of the other films are around 21 K. The Ba-122 on CaF2 shows identical crystalline quality and superconducting properties as films on Fe-buffered MgO.

The prepared thin films show exclusively a single in-plane orientation with epitaxial relation (001)[100] parallel to (001)[100] and a FWHM value of 1deg. Furthermore, resistive measurement of the superconducting transition temperature revealed a Tc90 of 25K with a high residual resistive ratio of 6.8. The applied preparation technique, standard thin film pulsed laser deposition at room temperature in combination with a subsequent post annealing process, is suitable for fabrication of high quality LaFeAsO1-xFx thin films. A high upper critical field of 76.2 T was evaluated for magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the c-axis and the anisotropy was calculated to be 3.3 assuming single band superconductivity.
