Physical layer security (PLS) encompasses techniques proposed at the physical layer to achieve information security objectives while requiring a minimal resource footprint. The channel coding-based secrecy and signal modulation-based encryption approaches are reliant on certain channel conditions or a certain communications protocol stack to operate on, which prevents them from being a generic solution. This paper presents Grain-128PLE, a lightweight physical layer encryption (PLE) scheme that is derived from the Grain-128AEAD v2 stream cipher. The Grain-128PLE stream cipher performs encryption and decryption at the physical layer, in between the channel coding and signal modulation processes. This placement, like that of the A5 stream cipher that had been used in the GSM communications standard, makes it a generic solution for providing data confidentiality in IoT networks. The design of Grain-128PLE maintains the structure of the main building blocks of the original Grain-128AEAD v2 stream cipher, evaluated for its security strength during NIST's recent Lightweight Cryptography competition, and is therefore expected to achieve similar levels of security.

Understanding melting in metals is a hot topic of present research. This may be accomplished by pum** the system with infrared (IR) laser radiation, and probing it with hard X-rays produced by an X-ray Free-Electron Laser (XFEL). In this work we studied nanostructured polycrystalline thin films of platinum that were illuminated by IR radiation of increasing fluences. We characterized the structural response as well as the nucleation and propagation of the liquid phase as a function of time delay between the IR pump and X-ray probe. We observed partial melting of the samples for IR fluences higher than 200 mJ$\cdot$cm$^{-2}$. To fit the contribution of the liquid phase to the scattering pattern in platinum we applied a model of liquid metal. The two-temperature model simulations were performed to understand the solid-state fraction of the sample heating process as a function of time delay and fluence.

As 5th Generation research reaches the twilight, the research community must go beyond 5G and look towards the 2030 connectivity landscape, namely 6G. In this context, this work takes a step towards the 6G vision by proposing a next generation communication platform, which aims to extend the rigid coverage area of fixed deployment networks by considering virtual mobile small cells (MSC) that are created on demand. Relying on emerging computing paradigms such as NFV (Network Function Virtualization) and SDN (Software Defined Networking), these cells can harness radio and networking capability locally reducing protocol signaling latency and overhead. These MSCs constitute an intelligent pool of networking resources that can collaborate to form a wireless network of MSCs providing a communication platform for localized, ubiquitous and reliable connectivity. The technology enablers for implementing the MSC concept are also addressed in terms of virtualization, lightweight wireless security, and energy efficient RF. The benefits of the MSC architecture towards reliable and efficient cell offloading are demonstrated as a use-case.
