We report the results of dc susceptibility and heat capacity measurements on the (ball-milled) nanocrystalline rare-earth (R) ternary compound, crystallizing in Gd4RhIn type, cubic Dy4RhAl compound. The bulk form of this compound has been known to undergo antiferromagnetic ordering at (TN=) 18 K with concomitant cluster spin glass anomalies. The present studies on the nano-form obtained by ball milling reveal that this antiferromagnetic ordering is suppressed with the reduction of particle size with no feature attributable to a well defined long-range magnetic ordering down to 1.8 K, but showing an inhomogeneous magnetism below 10 K. The point being stressed is that the results show the dominance of a feature around 30 K in the magnetic susceptibility data (well above TN of the bulk form) mimicking Griffiths phase. We infer that surface magnetism dominates before long range magnetic ordering occurs in this material.

The spin-chain compound Sr3NiPtO6 is known to have a nonmagnetic ground state. We have investigated the nature of ground state of Sr3NiPtO6 using magnetic susceptibility $χ(T)$, heat capacity $C_{\rm p}(T)$, muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS) measurements. The $χ(T)$ and $C_{\rm p}(T)$ do not exhibit any pronounced anomaly that can be associated with a phase transition to a magnetically ordered state. Our $μ$SR data confirm the absence of long-range magnetic ordering down to 0.04 K. Furthermore, the muon spin relaxation rate increases below 20 K and exhibits temperature independent behavior at low temperature, very similar to that observed in a quantum spin-liquid system. The INS data show a large excitation near 8~meV, and the analysis of the INS data reveals a singlet CEF ground state with a first excited CEF doublet state at $Δ_{\rm CEF}$ = 7.7 meV. The estimated CEF parameters reveal a strong planar anisotropy in the calculated $χ(T)$, consistent with the reported behavior of the $χ(T)$ of single crystal Sr3NiPtO6. We propose that the nonmagnetic singlet ground state and a large $Δ_{\rm CEF}$ (much larger than the exchange interaction $\mathcal{J}_{\rm ex}$) are responsible for the absence of long-range magnetic ordering and can mimic a classical spin-liquid behavior in this quasi-1D spin chain system Sr3NiPtO6. The classical spin-liquid ground state observed in Sr3NiPtO6 is due to the single-ion property, which is different from the quantum spin-liquid ground state observed in geometrically frustrated systems, where two-ion exchanges play an important role.

Partially disordered antiferro (PDA) magnetism (in which one of the three magnetic ions in a triangular network remains magnetically disordered), has been known commonly among geometrically frustrated insulating materials. The one-third plateau in isothermal magnetization (M) of such materials has been of great theoretical interest. Here, we report these properties in a AlB2-structure derived metallic material, Er2RhSi3 in which Er sublattice has triangular networks. The presence of a well-defined lamda anomaly in the temperature (T) dependence of heat capacity and its magnetic-field (H) dependence, and the loss of spin-disorder contribution in electrical resistivity (rho) confirm antiferromagnetic order below (TN=) 5 K. On the other hand, the separation of zero-field-cooled and field-cooled dc magnetic susceptibility (chi) curves, decay of isothermal remnant magnetization and the frequency dependence of real and imaginary components of ac chi suggest the onset of spin-glass freezing concomitant with the antiferromagnetic order. In addition, interestingly, we observe one-third plateau in M(H) below 20 kOe for T less than TN. The change in rho as a function of H at a given temperature well below TN is also revealing, with this compound exhibiting a plateau below 20 kOe, with complexities at higher fields. Therefore, this compound serves as a prototype for theoretical understanding of transport behavior across one-third plateau due to PDA magnetism in a metal without any interference from the 4f delocalization phenomena.

Previous reports in addition established that, interestingly, Tb ions play a direct and decisive role to lead to multiferroic properties with a critical canting angle of magnetic moments, unlike other well-known multiferroics. Here, we report the results of temperature dependent neutron powder diffraction studies on Tb_2-x Y_x BaNiO_5, to get an insight into the critical canting angle for multiferroic behavior. While multiferroic transition temperature decreases linearly with Y concentration, there is an abrupt drop of relative canting angle (of Tb and Ni magnetic moments) with respect to that in parent compound for an initial substitution ofx = 0.5 in the multiferroic region, without any notable change thereafter. We therefore infer that this critical canting angle is made up of two components - cooperative (long-range) and local (short-range) contributions.

We report the electronic properties of R4PtAl (R = Ho, and Er), which contains 3 sites for R, by the measurements of magnetization (ac and dc), heat-capacity, transport, and magnetoresistance (MR). Dc magnetization data reveal antiferromagnetic order below 19 K and 12 K in Ho and Er compounds, respectively. Additional features observed at lower temperatures (12 K for Ho4PtAl and 5 K for Er4PtAl) are akin to cluster spin-glass phase. Resistivity data exhibit a weak minimum at a temperature marginally higher than their respective Néel temperature (T_N) which is unusual for such rare-earths with well localized 4f states. Isothermal magnetization and magnetoresistance data well below T_N exhibit signatures of a subtle field-induced magnetic transition for a small magnetic field (less than 10 kOe). Notably, the isothermal entropy change at T_N has the largest peak value within this rare-earth family; for a field change from zero to 50 kOe, the entropy change is about 14.5 J/kg K (Ho4PtAl) and 21.5 J/kg K (Er4PtAl) suggesting a role of anisotropy of 4f orbital in determining this large value. The results provide some clues for the advancement of the field of magnetocaloric effect. The magnetocaloric property of Er4PtAl is nonhysteretic meeting a challenge to find materials with reversible magnetocaloric effect.

There have been constant efforts to find exotic quantum spin-liquid (QSL) materials. Some of the transition metal insulators dominated by the direction dependent anisotropic exchange interaction (Kitaev model for honeycomb network of magnetic ions) are considered to be promising cases for the same. In such Kitaev insulators, QSL is achieved from the zero-field antiferromagnetic state by the application of magnetic field, suppressing other exchange interactions responsible for magnetic order. Here, we show that the features attributable to long-range magnetic ordering of the intermetallic compound, Tb5Si3 (T_N= 69 K), containing honey-comb network of Tb ions, are completely suppressed by a critical applied field, H_cr, in heat-capacity and magnetization data, mimicking the behavior of Kitaev physics candidates. The neutron diffraction patterns as a function of H reveal that it is an incommensurate magnetic structure that gets suppressed, showing peaks arising from multiple wave vectors beyond Hcr. Increasing magnetic entropy as a function of H with a peak in the magnetically ordered state is in support of some kind of magnetic disorder in a narrow field range after H_cr. Such a high-field behavior for a metallic heavy rare-earth system to our knowledge has not been reported in the past and therefore is intriguing.

The investigation of devitrification in thermally annealed nanodimensional glassy alloy thin films provides a comprehensive understanding of their thermal stability, which can be used to explore potential applications. The amorphous to crystalline polymorphous transformation of cosputtered NiZr alloy (Ni78Zr22 at%) films, with a thickness lower than the reported critical limit of devitrification, was studied through detailed structural characterization and molecular dynamics (MD) simulations. Devitrification to a nanocrystalline state (Ni7Zr2 structure) was observed at 800 degC, with an increase in density (approx 3.6%) much higher than that achieved in bulk alloys. Variation in the magnetic property of the films and the overall physical structure including morphology and composition were examined before and after annealing. MD simulations were employed to effectively elucidate not only the high densification but also the increased magnetic moment after annealing, which was correlated with the simulated change in the coordination number around Ni atoms. The structural relaxation process accompanying devitrification was described as a disorder-to-order transformation while highlighting the crucial role played by chemical short range order prevalent in glassy materials.

We have studied the influence of external pressure up to 1 GPa on the magnetic transitions of the orthorhombic Haldane-spin chain compound Tb2BaNiO5 an exotic multiferroic material. This parent compound is known to undergo Néel ordering at TN1= 63 K and another magnetic transition at TN2= 25K at which ferroelectricity sets in, however, without any change in the magnetic symmetry, but with only a sharp change in the canting angle of Tb 4f and Ni 3d magnetic moments. There is a subtle difference in the antiferromagnetic state above and below TN2, which is supported by the fact that there is a metamagnetic transition below TN2only (for 5 K, at about 60 kOe). We report here that, with the application of external pressure, there is an upward shift of TN1, while TN2 shifts towards lower temperatures. It is interesting that the two magnetic transitions in the same compound behave differently under pressure and the opposite behavior at TN2 is attributed to local distortion leading to ferroelectricity. The results are augmented by temperature dependent x-ray diffraction and positive chemical pressure studies. The chemical pressure caused by the isoelectronic do** at Ba site by Sr reduces both the transition temperatures. Clearly, the external pressure favors antiferromagnetic coupling (that is, leading to TN1 enhancement), whereas the chemical pressure reduces TN1, suggesting important role of the changes in local hybridization induced by do** on magnetism in this material.

The orthorhombic Haldane spin chain compound Tb2BaNiO5 (Neel order, TN1= 63 K) has been shown to be an exotic multiferroic system below (TN2) 25 K due to various fascinating features, pointing to a strong potential for the advancement of concepts in this field. In particular, the rare-earth ions play a direct decisive role unlike in many other well known multiferroic materials and there appears to be a critical canting angle, develo** below TN2, subtended by Tb 4f and Ni 3d moments to trigger this cross coupling phenomenon. However, for a small replacement of Sr for Ba, viz. in Tb2Ba0.9Sr0.1NiO5, ferroelectricity was reported to get destroyed, but retaining magnetic features at (TN1) 55 K and (TN2) 14 K. In this article, we address the origin of suppression of multiferrocity in this Sr doped system through neutron diffraction studies and density functional theory calculations. We find that, unlike in Tb2BaNiO5, there is no pronounced change in the relative canting angle of the magnetic moments around TN2 and that the absolute value of this parameter down to 2 K fails to exceed the critical value noted for the parent, thereby explaining the origin of destruction of magnetoelectric coupling in the Sr doped material. This finding renders strong support to the proposal of possible existence of critical canting angle, at least in some cases, to induce multiferroicity, apart from serving as a route to engineer multiferroic materials for applications.

The rare-earth based ternary intermetallic compounds $R_2TX_3$ ($R$ = rare-earth, $T$ = transition-metal, $X$ = Si, Ge, Ga, In) have attracted considerable interest due to a wide range of interesting low temperature properties. Here we investigate the magnetic state of Nd$_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ using neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation ($μ$SR) and inelastic neutron scattering (INS). This compound appears anomalous among the $R_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ series, since it was proposed to order ferromagnetically, whereas others in this series are antiferromagnets. Although some members of the $R_2TX_3$ series have been reported to form ordered superstructures, our data are well described by Nd$_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ adopting the AlB$_2$-type structure with a single Nd site, and we do not find evidence for superlattice peaks in neutron diffraction. Our results confirm the onset of long range magnetic order below $T_0=17$~K, where the whole sample enters the ordered state. Neutron diffraction measurements establish the presence of a ferromagnetic component in this compound, as well as an antiferromagnetic one which has a propagation vector $\mathbf{k_2}=(1/2,1/2,1/4-δ)$ with a temperature dependent $δ\approx0.02-0.04$, and moments orientated exclusively along the $c$-axis. $μ$SR measurements suggest that these components coexist on a microscopic level, and therefore the magnetic structure of Nd$_{2}$PdSi$_{3}$ is predominantly ferromagnetic, with a sinusoidally modulated antiferromagnetic contribution which reaches a maximum amplitude at 11~K, and becomes smaller upon further decreasing the temperature. INS results show the presence of crystalline-electric field (CEF) excitations above $T_0$, and from our analysis we propose a CEF level scheme.

We report an unusual canted magnetism due to 3d and 4f electrons, occupying two different crystallographic sites, with its consequence to electric dipole order. This is based on neutron powder diffraction measurements on Tb2BaNiO5 (orthorhombic, Immm centrosymmetric space group), exhibiting Neel order below (TN) 63 K, to understand multiferroic behavior below 25 K. The magnetic structure is made up of Ni and Tb magnetic moments, which are found to be mutually canted in the entire temperature range below TN, though collinearity is seen within each sublattice, as known in the past. First-principles density functional theory calculations (GCA plus SO and GCA plus U plus SO approximations) support such a canted ground state. The intriguing finding, being reported here, is that there is a sudden increase in this Tb-Ni relative cantingle angle at the temperature (that is, at 25 K) at which spontaneous electric polarization sets in, with bond distance and bong angle anomalies. This finding emphasizes the need for a new spin-driven polarization mechanism, that is, a critical canting angle coupled with exchangestriction, to induce multiferroicity in magnetic insulators with canted spins.

The present results reveal long-range antiferromagnetic order of an incommensurate type with the moments oriented along c-axis at all temperatures below TN. There are however notable changes in the T dependence of propagation vector along b-axis across 17 K. An observation of interest is that there is no decrease of intensity of magnetic Bragg peaks on entrance into the glassy phase (that is, below 17 K). This finding suggests that the magnetism of this compound is an exotic one and we wonder whether this compound is an example for dynamical spin-glass freezing phenomenon, as a consequence of geometrical frustration.

We report the experimental observation of spin reorientation in the double perovskite Ho$_2$FeCoO$_6$. The magnetic phase transitions in this compound are characterized and studied through magnetization and specific heat, and the magnetic structures are elucidated by neutron powder diffraction. Two magnetic phase transitions are observed in this compound - one at $T_\mathrm{N1} \approx$ 250~K, from paramagnetic to antiferromagnetic, and the other at $T_\mathrm{N2} \approx$ 45~K, from a phase with mixed magnetic structures to a single phase through a spin reorientation process. The magnetic structure in the temperature range 200~K - 45~K is a mixed phase of the irreducible representations $Γ_1$ and $Γ_3$, both of which are antiferromagnetic. The phase with mixed magnetic structures that exists in Ho$_2$FeCoO$_6$ gives rise to a large thermal hysteresis in magnetization that extends from 200~K down to the spin reorientation temperature. At $T_\mathrm{N2}$, the magnetic structure transforms to $Γ_1$. Though long-range magnetic order is established in the transition metal lattice, it is seen that only short-range magnetic order prevails in Ho$^{3+}$ - lattice. Our results should motivate further detailed studies on single crystals in order to explore spin reorientation process, spin switching and the possibility of anisotropic magnetic interactions giving rise to electric polarization in Ho$_2$FeCoO$_6$.

We emphasize on the following findings: (i) Observation of re-entrant spin-glass behavior; that is, this oxide undergoes ferrilmagnetic ordering below 8- K, entering spin-glass regime around 12 K. (ii) There is no prominent feature in the complex dielectric permittivity (in particular, at the magnetic transitions) in the absence of external magnetic field, indicative of the absence of ferroelectricity. However, there is a distinct evidence for magneto-dielectric (MDE) coupling. The sign of MDE coupling also changes as the sample is cooled from ferrimagnetic state to spin-glass regime. (iii) There are pyroelectric anomalies in the vicinity of 30-70 K, presumably from thermally stimulated depolarization current.

Spin-polarized density functional calculations, magnetization, and neutron diffraction measurements are carried out to investigate the magnetic exchange interactions and strong correlation effects in Yb substituted inverse spinel nickel ferrite. In the pristine form, the compound is found to be a mixed insulator under the Zaanen-Sawtazsky-Allen classification scheme as it features both charge transfer and Mott insulator mechanism. Estimation of magnetic exchange couplings reveals that both octahedral-octahedral and octahedral-tetrahedral spin-spin interactions are antiferromagnetic which is typical of a spin-frustrated triangular lattice. However, the latter is dominant compared to the former leading to a forced parallel alignment of the spins at the octahedral site which is in agreement with the results of neutron diffraction measurements. The substituent Yb is found to be settled in +3 charge state, as confirmed from the XPS measurements, to behave like a spin-half impurity carried by the localized $f_{z(x^2-y^2)}$ orbital. The impurity $f$ spin significantly weakens the antiferromagnetic coupling with the spins at the tetrahedral site, which explains the experimental observation of fall in Curie temperature with Yb substitution.

Sr$_{3}$ZnIrO$_{6}$ is an effective spin one-half Mott insulating iridate belonging to a family of magnets which includes a number of quasi-one dimensional systems as well as materials exhibiting three dimensional order. Here we present the results of an extensive investigation into the magnetism including heat capacity, a.c. susceptibility, muon spin rotation ($μ$SR), neutron diffraction and inelastic neutron scattering on the same sample. It is established that the material exhibits a transition at about $17$ K into a three-dimensional antiferromagnetic structure with propagation vector $\boldsymbol{k}=(0,\frac{1}{2},1)$ in the hexagonal setting of R$\bar{3}$c and non-collinear moments of $0.87$$μ_B$ on Ir$^{4+}$ ions. Further we have observed a well defined powder averaged spin wave spectrum with zone boundary energy of $\sim 5$ meV at $5$ K. We stress that a theoretical analysis shows that the observed non-collinear magnetic structure arises from anisotropic inter- and intra- chain exchange which has its origin in significant spin-orbit coupling. The model can satisfactorily explain the observed spin wave excitations.

The area of research to discover new Li containing materials and to understand their physical properties has been of constant interest due to applications potential for rechargeable batteries. Here, we present the results of magnetic investigations on a Li compound, Li3Ni2RuO6, which was believed to be a ferrimagnet below 80K. While our neutron diffraction (ND) and isothermal magnetization (M) data support ferrimagnetism, more detailed magnetic studies establish that this ferrimagnetic phase exhibits some features similar to spin-glasses. In addition, we find another broad magnetic anomaly around 40-55 K in magnetic susceptibility, attributable to cluster spin-glass phenomenon. Gradual dominance of cluster spin-glass dynamics with a decrease of temperature (T) and the apparent spread in freezing temperature suggest that the ferrimagnetism of this compound is a chaotic one. The absence of a unique freezing temperature for a crystalline material is interesting. In addition, pyroelectric current data reveals a feature in the range 40-50 K, attributable to thermally stimulated depolarization current. We hope this finding motivates future work to explore whether there is any intriguing correlation of such a feature with spin-glass dynamics. We attribute these magnetic and electric dipole anomalies to the crystallographic disorder intrinsic to this compound.

In these compounds, we report a sign change in the exchange bias across the compensation temperature, accompanied by a non-monotonic change in the local moments across the compensation temperature. Such non-monotonic change in the magnetic moments is triggered by a similar change in the lattice structure. We relate here the sign change of exchange bias with that of the crystalline energy of the lattice and the Zeeman energy term arising from the anti-site disorder.

Inelastic neutron scattering on the spin-chain compound Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$ reveals gapped quasi-1D magnetic excitations. The observed one-magnon band between 29.5 and 39 meV consists of two dispersive modes. The spin wave spectrum could be well fitted with an antiferromagnetic anisotropic exchange model and single ion anisotropy on the Ni site. The extracted dominant anisotropic antiferromagnetic intra-chain exchange interaction between Ir and Ni ions are $J_z=19.5$ meV and $J_{xy}=12.1$ meV. These values justify previous electronic structure calculations, showing the importance of Ir spin orbit coupling on the electron correlations. The magnetic excitations survive up to 200 K well above the magnetic ordering temperature of $T_N \sim 70$ K, also indicating a quasi-1D nature of the magnetic interactions in Sr$_3$NiIrO$_6$. Our results not only support the idea of the existence of a new temperature scale well above $T_N$, but also emphasize the need to consider new exchange paths complicated by the SOC, resulting in additional characteristic temperatures in such spin-chain systems.

The single phase PFN was characterized through XRD, microstructure through SEM, and magnetic studies were carried out through temperature dependent vibrating sample magnetometer (VSM) and neutron diffraction (ND) measurements. PFN exhibits a cusp at around 150 K in the temperature dependent magnetic susceptibility corresponding to the Néel temperature (TN1) and another peak around 10 K (TN2) corresponding to spin-glass like transition. In the temperature dependent ND studies, a magnetic Bragg peak appears at Q = 1.35 Å-1 (where Q = 4πsin theeta/lambda, is called the scattering vector) below TN (150 K) implying antiferromagnetic (AFM) ordering in the system. On the basis of Rietveld analysis of the ND data at T = 2 K, the magnetic structure of PFN could be explained by a G-type antiferromagnetic structure.

Neutron powder diffraction realized on a polycrystalline sample reveals the emergence of magnetic reflections below 75 K with magnetic propagation vector k ~ (0, 0, 1), undetected in previous neutron studies [T.N. We present magnetization M versus magnetic field H and temperature T, T- and H-dependent heat-capacity C_{p}, ^{45}Sc nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), muon spin rotation (μSR), neutron diffraction measurements and electronic structure calculations for Ba_{3}Cu_{3}Sc_{4}O_{12}. The onset of magnetic long-range antiferromagnetic order at T_{N} ~16 K is consistently evidenced from the whole gamut of our data. A significant sensitivity of T_{N} to the applied magnetic field H (T_{N}~0 K for H=70 kOe) is also reported. Coupled with a ferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature (θ_{CW}~65 K) in the susceptibility (from a 100 K-300 K fit), it is indicative of competing ferromagnetic and antiferromagnetic interactions. These indications are corroborated by our density functional theory based electronic structure calculations where we find the presence of significant ferromagnetic couplings between some copper ions whereas AF couplings were present between some others. Our experimental data, backed by our theoretical calculations, rule out one-dimensional magnetic behaviour suggested by the structure and the observed long-range order is due to the presence of non-negligible magnetic interactions between adjacent as well as next-nearest chains.

It is found that the solid solution, Ca(3-x)Sr(x)CoRhO6, exists at least till about x= 1.0 without any change in the crystal structure. Apart from insensitivity of the spin-chain feature to volume expansion, the characteristic features of geometrical frustration interestingly appear at the same temperatures for all compositions, in sharp contrast to the response to Y substitution for Ca (reported previously). Interestingly, huge frequency dependence of ac susceptibility known for the parent compound persists for all compositions. We do not find a change in the properties under external pressure. The stability of the magnetic anomalies of this compound to the volume change (about 4%) is puzzling.

The manganocuprate compound Gd3Ba2Mn2Cu2O12 (Gd-3222) has been synthesized by conventional solid state reaction method and its magnetic behavior has been studied by dc and ac magnetization (M) and heat capacity (C) measurements as a function of temperature (T). This compound crystallizes in a tetragonal structure (space group I4/mmm). We find that this compound exhibits three magnetic transitions, around 2.5, 4.8 and 9 K, as inferred from dc and ac magnetic susceptibility (chi) data. However, no evidence for a well-defined lambda-anomaly is found in C(T) above 1.8 K, though there is a gradual upturn below about 10 K. An application of a magnetic field results in a peak around 5K, while ac chi appears to show a very weak frequency dependence below 9 K. Isothermal M curve at 1.8 K exhibits a weak hysteresis without any evidence for saturation even at fields as high as 120 kOe. These results imply that this compound undergoes a spin-glass-like freezing at low temperatures, though the exact nature of the magnetic transition at 10 K is not clear. The magnitude of the magnetocaloric effect, as inferred from M and C data, is quite large over a wide temperature range below 50 K peaking around 4 K.

In the case of the Rh compound, the susceptibility data reveal that there are two magnetic transitions, one in the range 10 -15 K and the other appearing as a smooth crossover near 45 K, with a large frequency dependence of ac susceptibility in the range 10 to 40 K; in addition, the features in C(T) are smeared out at these temperatures. The magnetic properties are comparable to those of previously known few compounds with partially disordered antiferromagnetic structure. We have deposited c-axis oriented thin films of La1.5Dy0.5CaBa2Cu5Oz (La-2125) tetragonal superconductor on LaAlO3 (001) by Pulsed Laser Deposition. These films were irradiated with 200 MeV Ag+15 ions. Atomic Force Microscopy and Elastic Recoil Detection Analysis indicate that the irradiation has created columnar defects along the entire thickness (2000 A) of these films. With ion irradiation up to 1*10^11 ions/cm2, the critical current density (Jc(H)) is found to enhance by almost five folds, which is attributed to the augmented flux pinning by the columnar defects. A further increase in irradiation to 1*10^12 ions/cm2 causes reduction in Jc(H) due to distorted morphology of the film. Our work shows that the enhancement in Jc (H) of the irradiated La-2125 film is comparable to that in irradiated RE-123. Also, as the La-2125 type films have greater chemical stability than RE-123 (RE = rare earth ion), La-2125 type superconductors are potential candidates for applications. Interesting to note that there are partial flux jumps observed to occur symmetrically in the magnetic hysteresis of irradiated La-2125 thin films with enhanced Jc(H).

The magnetic behavior of a solid solution, Ca3-xYxCo2O6, based on an exotic spin-chain compound, Ca3Co2O6, crystallizing in K4CdCl6-derived rhombohedral structure is investigated. Among the compositions investigated (x= 0.0, 0.3, 0.5, 0.75 and 1.0), single phase formation persists up to x= 0.75, with the elongation of the c-axis. The present investigations reveal that the temperature at which the partially disordered antiferromagnetic structure sets in (which occurs at 24 K for the parent compound, x= 0.0) undergoes gradual reduction with the substitution of Y for Ca, attaining the value of about 2.2 K for the nominal x = 1.0. The trend observed in this characteristic temperature is opposite to that reported under external pressure, thereby establishing that Y substitution exerts negative chemical pressure. Anomalous steps observed in the isothermal magnetization at very low temperatures (around 2 K) for x= 0.0, which have been proposed to arise from quantum tunneling effects are found to vanish by a small substitution (x = 0.3) of Y for Ca. Systematics in ac and dc magnetic susceptibility behavior with Y substitution for Ca have also been probed. We believe that the present results involving the expansion of chain length without disrupting the magnetic chain may be useful to the overall understanding of the novel magnetism of the parent compound.

Ever since high Tc superconductivity was discovered in La-based mixed oxide system by Bednorz and Muller, enormous efforts have been put in by several researchers around the world in understanding the origin and mechanism of superconductivity in these, as well as in systems derived from them. It is a proven fact that the superconductivity in RE-123 superconductors is governed by the oxygen content, which in turn is responsible for the carrier concentration in the system. Due to their dependence on oxygen content, RE-123 superconductors undergo structural transformation from orthorhombic to tetragonal as a function of oxygen content making them very difficult compounds to work with, in terms of technological applications, such as device fabrication. Hence, it would be interesting to obtain a stable compound whose superconducting properties, are not only insensitive directly to oxygen content but, having dependence of its carrier concentration and Tc on the nature and amount of the substituted cation. In the present work, we focus our investigations for such a compound, which has been derived from a tetragonal RE-123 superconducting system.
In this chapter, we present a brief review of the studies carried out on La-2125 compounds to elucidate the role of dopants in modifying the superconducting properties and establish a structure-property correlation in them.

We investigate the origin of charge density wave (CDW) formation in insulators by studying BaIrO3 using high resolution (1.4 meV) photoemission spectroscopy. The spectra reveal the existence of localized density of states at the Fermi level in the vicinity of room temperature. These localized states are found to vanish as the temperature is lowered thereby, opening a soft gap at the Fermi level, as a consequence of CDW transition. In addition, the energy dependence of the spectral density of states reveals the importance of magnetic interactions, rather than well-known Coulomb repulsion effect, in determining the electronic structure thereby implying a close relationship between ferromagnetism and CDW observed in this compound. Also, Ba core level spectra surprisingly exhibit an unusual behavior prior to CDW transition.

The spin-chain compounds, Ca3CuIrO6 and Ca3CuRhO6, crystallizing in a K4CdCl6-derived monoclinic structure, are investigated by ac and dc magnetization, isothermal remnant magnetization as well as heat capacity measurements. The results reveal the existence of a magnetic ordering in the vicinity of 15 K for both the compounds, but the transition appears to be of a complex nature. The existence of a spin-glass component is strongly indicated by the results. We propose that topological effects play a role on magnetism of these compounds. The magnetic properties for these two compounds are interestingly similar as though isoelectronic chemical substitution at the octahedral coordination site does not significantly interfere in the magnetic exchange process.

We find that there is an unusually large decrease of $ρ$ for moderate values of H in the close vicinity of room temperature uncharacteristic of paramagnets, with the magnitude of the magnetoresistance increasing with decreasing temperature as though the spin-order contribution to $ρ$ is temperature dependent. In addition, this compound exhibits giant magnetoresistance behaviour at rather high temperatures (above 77 K) in the magnetically ordered state due to a metamagnetic transition.

A quasi one-dimensional compound, Ca3CuRuO6, has been synthesized by solid-state reaction method and studied using magnetization (M) and heat capacity (C) measurements. This compound undergoes magnetic ordering (T_o) around 40 K, as evidenced by the dc magnetic susceptibility (chi) behavior. However, the magnitude of the paramagnetic
Curie temperature (theta_p) obtained from the high temperature linear region is large (-277 K, with the negative sign indicating antiferromagnetic interaction). The reduction of T_o, compared to theta_p, is attributed to geometrical frustration effect arising from the triangular arrangement of antiferromagnetically coupled magnetic chains. The absence of a feature in ac chi around 40 K rules out possible spin-glass freezing. However, we find that the peak in C(T) around 40 K is weak, with the entropy change associated with the transition being negligible, typical of a disordered magnetism. We infer that this material thus exhibits inhomogeneous magnetism, despite being stoichiometric, presumably due to an interplay between disorder in the Cu-Ru chain.

The compound Dy7Rh3 ordering antiferromagnetically below (TN=) 59 K has been known to exhibit a temperature (T) dependent electrical resistivity (rho) behavior in the paramagnetic state unusual for intermetallic compounds in the sense that there is a broad peak in rho(T) in the paramagnetic state (around 130 K) as though there is a semi-conductor to metal transition. In addition, there is an upturn below T_N due to magnetic super-zone gap effects. Here we report the influence of external magnetic field (H) on the rho(T) behavior of this compound below 300 K. The rise of rho(T) found below TN could be suppressed at very high fields (>> 60 kOe), thus resulting in a very large magnetoresistance (MR) in the magnetically ordered state. The most notable finding is that the magnitude of MR is large for moderate applications of H (say 80 kOe) in a temperature range far above T_N as well, which is untypical of intermetallic compounds. Thus, this compound is characterized by large MR anomalies in the entire T range of investigation.

The Rietveld analysis of the neutron diffraction data reveals tetragonal structure for all the samples, which crystallizes into La-123 type tetragonal structure in P4/mmm space group. Iodometric double titrations were performed to determine the oxygen content values and calculate mobile charge carrier (holes) density. The superconducting transition temperatures (Tc) increases from ~ 20 K for x = 0.1 to a maximum of 75 K for x = 0.5. Flux pinning force (Fp) and critical current density (Jc), calculated from the low temperature hysteresis loops, also increases with increasing dopant concentration. The paper presents the studies on structure and superconducting properties of all LDBO compounds in light of the role of calcium in inducing superconductivity in the tetragonal non-superconducting oxide.

The results reveal that there is a shift of the magnetic transition occurring around 24 K to a marginally higher temperature (by 0.5 K) as H is increased from 10 to 30 kOe, uncharacteristic of anti-ferromagnets. No peak attributable to magnetic ordering could be observed in the entire field range of investigation in the vicinity of the second magnetic transition, occurring around 10 K. However, hysteresis studies of H-dependence of C indicate a subtle change in the magnetic structure as the T is lowered across 10 K.

This is the first NMR investigation of this family of compounds. We are able to detect the NMR signal below about 15 K, which is a conclusive proof for the existence of non-magnetic Co ions (Co3+ - low-spin 3d6, in addition to magnetic Co ions) at least in a narrow temperature range around 10 K, thereby resolving a controversy on this issue in the literature. In addition, we find that the spin-lattice and spin-spin relaxation times undergo a dramatic increase below about 12 K, with a profound influence on the intensity of the NMR signal as a function of temperature, providing a microscopic evidence for the existence of 12K-transition. The spectral features present quite an interesting situation.

While the paramagnetic Curie temperatures have been known to be large with a negative sign, as though antiferromagnetic interaction is very strong, the results establish that (i) the former apparently undergoes inhomogeneous magnetic ordering only around 15 K, however without spin-glass anomalies, and (ii) the latter orders antiferromagnetically at a relatively low temperature (17 K). Thus, the magnetic frustration manifests differently in these compounds.

Our investigations reveal that Ce is trivalent and there is no clear evidence for long range magnetic ordering down to 45 mK. The $ρ$ behavior is notable in the sense that (i) the temperature (T)-coefficient of $ρ$ is negative in the entire range of measurement (45 mK to 300 K) with large values of $ρ$, while S behavior is typical of metallic Kondo lattices, and (ii) $ρ$ is proportional to T-0.6 at low temperatures, without any influence on the exponent by the application of a magnetic field, which does not seem to classify this compound into hither-to-known non-Fermi liquid (NFL) systems. In contrast to the logarithmic increase known for NFL systems, C/T measured down to 0.5 K exhibits a fall below 2 K. The observed properties of this compound are unusual among Ce systems.

The contraction of unit cell volume due to larger ion being substituted by smaller ions, gives rise to creation of pinning centers in the unit cell leading to increase in critical current density and flux pinning

The simultaneous substitution of Co and Ga at Cu site shows variation in the transition temperature (Tc), oxygen content and hole concentration as a function of change in the balance of magnetic (Co) and non-magnetic (Ga) concentration. Orthorhombicity (D), given as (b-a)/a, also varies as a function of increasing dopant concentration. The variation in Tc due to Co-Ga substitution is discussed in the light of dopant valency and hole filling mechanism.

The results establish that all these compounds order antiferromagnetically at low temperatures with deviations from de Gennes scaling. Isothermal magnetization (M) data below respective Neel temperatures (TN) reveal the existence of field-induced metamagnetic-like transitions for most of the compounds (except R= Sm and Gd), whereas in Sm and Gd compounds M varies essentially linearly with magnetic field. With respect to the rho behavior, there appears to be a subtle difference in the temperature dependence beyond 50 K between Sm on the one hand and the rest on the other. In addition, the unexpected rho(T) minimum reported recently for R = Sm, Gd, Tb and Dy in the paramagnetic state (around 20 to 30 K) is essentially absent for R = Ho and Er. The results overall reveal that the normal rare-earths in this series present an interesting situation in magnetism, warranting a new theoretical approach to describe the transport behavior in the paramagnetic state particularly in the vicinity of TN.
