We present measurements of $Ω$ and $φ$ production at mid-rapidity from Au+Au collisions at nucleon-nucleon center-of-mass energies $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27 and 39 GeV by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider (RHIC). Motivated by the coalescence formation mechanism for these strange hadrons, we study the ratios of $N(Ω^{-}+Ω^{+})/(2N(φ))$. These ratios as a function of transverse momentum ($p_T$) fall on a consistent trend at high collision energies, but start to show deviations in peripheral collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6, 27 and 39 GeV, and in central collisions at 11.5 GeV in the intermediate $p_T$ region of 2.4-3.6 GeV/c. We further evaluate empirically the strange quark $p_T$ distributions at hadronization by studying the $Ω/φ$ ratios scaled by the number of constituent quarks. The NCQ-scaled $Ω/φ$ ratios show a suppression of strange quark production in central collisions at 11.5 GeV compared to $\sqrt{s_{NN}} >= 19.6$ GeV. The shapes of the presumably thermal strange quark distributions in 0-60% most central collisions at 7.7 GeV show significant deviations from those in 0-10% most central collisions at higher energies. These features suggest that there is likely a change of the underlying strange quark dynamics in the transition from quark-matter to hadronic matter at collision energies below 19.6 GeV.

Nearly fully overlap** collisions are selected based on the amount of energy deposited by spectators in the STAR Zero Degree Calorimeters (ZDCs). Within this sample, the observed dependence of $v_2\{2\}$ on multiplicity demonstrates that ZDC information combined with multiplicity can preferentially select different overlap configurations in U+U collisions. An initial-state model with gluon saturation describes the slope of $v_2\{2\}$ as a function of multiplicity in central collisions better than one based on Glauber with a two-component multiplicity model.

At $\sqrt{s_{_{\rm NN}}} = \text{200 GeV}$, the slope of the difference of $v_2$ between $π^-$ and $π^+$ as a function of $A_{ch}$ exhibits a centrality dependence, which is qualitatively similar to calculations that incorporate a chiral magnetic wave effect. Similar centrality dependence is also observed at lower energies.

We report on measurements of dielectron ($e^+e^-$) production in Au$+$Au collisions at a center-of-mass energy of 200 GeV per nucleon-nucleon pair using the STAR detector at RHIC. Systematic measurements of the dielectron yield as a function of transverse momentum ($p_{\rm T}$) and collision centrality show an enhancement compared to a cocktail simulation of hadronic sources in the low invariant-mass region ($M_{ee}<$ 1 GeV/$c^2$). This enhancement cannot be reproduced by the $ρ$-meson vacuum spectral function. In minimum-bias collisions, in the invariant-mass range of 0.30 $-$ 0.76 GeV/$c^2$, integrated over the full $p_{\rm T}$ acceptance, the enhancement factor is 1.76 $\pm$ 0.06 (stat.) $\pm$ 0.26 (sys.) $\pm$ 0.29 (cocktail). The enhancement factor exhibits weak centrality and $p_{\rm T}$ dependence in STAR's accessible kinematic regions, while the excess yield in this invariant-mass region as a function of the number of participating nucleons follows a power-law shape with a power of 1.44 $\pm$ 0.10. Models that assume an in-medium broadening of the $ρ$ meson spectral function consistently describe the observed excess in these measurements. Additionally, we report on measurements of $ω$ and $φ$-meson production through their $e^+e^-$ decay channel. These measurements show good agreement with Tsallis Blast-Wave model predictions as well as, in the case of the $φ$-meson, results through its $K^+K^-$ decay channel. In the intermediate invariant-mass region (1.1$<M_{ee}<$ 3 GeV/$c^2$), we investigate the spectral shapes from different collision centralities. Physics implications for possible in-medium modification of charmed hadron production and other physics sources are discussed.

These correlations directly probe quark transversity distributions. We measure signals in excess of five standard deviations at high transverse momenta, at high pseudorapidities eta>0.5, and for pair masses around the mass of the rho-meson. This is the first direct transversity measurement in p+p collisions. Comparing the results to data from lepton-nucleon scattering will test the universality of these spin-dependent quantities.

Dihadron angular correlations in $d$+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}=200$ GeV are reported as a function of the measured zero-degree calorimeter neutral energy and the forward charged hadron multiplicity in the Au-beam direction. A finite correlated yield is observed at large relative pseudorapidity ($Δη$) on the near side (i.e. relative azimuth $Δφ\sim0$). This correlated yield as a function of $Δη$ appears to scale with the dominant, primarily jet-related, away-side ($Δφ\simπ$) yield. The Fourier coefficients of the $Δφ$ correlation, $V_{n}=\langle\cos nΔφ\rangle$, have a strong $Δη$ dependence. In addition, it is found that $V_{1}$ is approximately inversely proportional to the mid-rapidity event multiplicity, while $V_{2}$ is independent of it with similar magnitude in the forward ($d$-going) and backward (Au-going) directions.

The thermodynamics of hot and dense matter created in heavy-ion collision experiments are usually studied as a system of infinite volume. Here we report on possible effects for considering a finite system size for such matter in the framework of the Hadron Resonance Gas model. The bulk thermodynamic variables as well as the fluctuations of conserved charges are considered. We find that the finite size effects are insignificant once the observables are scaled with the respective volumes. The only substantial effect is found in the fluctuations of electric charge which may therefore be used to extract information about the volume of fireball created in heavy-ion collision experiments.

The acceptance-corrected dielectron excess mass spectra, where the known hadronic sources have been subtracted from the inclusive dielectron mass spectra, are reported for the first time at mid-rapidity $|y_{ee}|<1$ in minimum-bias Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 and 200 GeV. The excess mass spectra are consistently described by a model calculation with a broadened $ρ$ spectral function for $M_{ee}<1.1$ GeV/$c^{2}$. The integrated dielectron excess yield at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 19.6 GeV for $0.4<M_{ee}<0.75$ GeV/$c^2$, normalized to the charged particle multiplicity at mid-rapidity, has a value similar to that in In+In collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 17.3 GeV. For $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV, the normalized excess yield in central collisions is higher than that at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 17.3 GeV and increases from peripheral to central collisions. These measurements indicate that the lifetime of the hot, dense medium created in central Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 200 GeV is longer than those in peripheral collisions and at lower energies.

The susceptibilities for vanishing baryon densities are found to show a scaling with the system volume in the hadronic as well as partonic phase. We uncover four new spin-charge ordered ground states in the strong coupling limit of the Kondo lattice model on triangular geometry. Two of the states at one-third electronic filling ($n=1/3$) consist of decorated ferromagnetic chains coupled antiferromagnetically with the neighboring chains. The third magnetic ground state is noncollinear, consisting of antiferromagnetic chains separated by a pair of canted ferromagnetic chains. An even more unusual magnetic ground state, a variant of the $120^{\circ}$ Yafet-Kittel phase, is discovered at $n=2/3$. These magnetic orders are stabilized by opening a gap in the electronic spectrum: a "band effect". All the phases support modulations in the electronic charge density due to the presence of magnetically inequivalent sites. In particular, the charge ordering pattern found at $n=2/3$ is observed in various triangular lattice systems, such as, 2H-AgNiO$_2$, 3R-AgNiO$_2$ and Na$_x$CoO$_2$.

The structure and morphology of polymers are significantly altered upon exposure to high energy gamma irradiation. The present investigation reports the influence of such irradiation of doses in the range of 1 - 30 kGy on the particle size of Poly (Ethylene Oxide) [PEO] powder along with its correlation with molecular weight distribution. Pore-size distribution and overall porosity of the synthesized films prepared with irradiated and unirradiated PEO powder is also reported. The particle size of both unirradiated and irradiated PEO powders is found be in the range of 0.01 - 1000 micrometer. It is known that, variation in irradiation dose either generates particles of lower dimension through bond breakage i.e scission or higher dimension through cross-linkage. PEO films exhibit strong dependence of irradiation effect on pore size distribution and porosity. PEO films synthesized using both unirradiated and irradiated powders exhibit pore dimension in the range of 20 - 500 nm. The overall porosity of PEO films studied through BET adsorption technique initially increases with dose upto 3 kGy followed by linear decrease upto 30 kGy. Films cast with unirradiated PEO powder show multimodal pore size distribution, but perturbation with irradiation changes the modality to uni-or bimodal nature. The mentioned outcome of irradiation viz. particle and pore size variation is also correlated with PEO microstructures. The article demonstrates that, selective irradiation is capable of tailoring the pore-size within a definite regime thereby reducing the multimodal trait. The reported study may be relevant towards applications such as catalysis, sensing and filtration, where pore size distribution plays a crucial role.

Interactions of Poly (Ethylene Oxide) [PEO] and gamma irradiation of variable doses (1-30 kGy) on the thermal, crystalline and structural properties are investigated using DSC and FTIR technique. Two states of PEO, viz. powder (P-S-series) and solution (P-L-series) are subjected to irradiationand are castinto uniform film.DSC results revealed steady increment of crystallinity upto 20 kGy for P-S-series after which amorphous region increases till 30 kGy. Conversely, P-L-series shows much enhanced crystallinity retained within low regime of 7 kGy, followed by sharp declining trend till 30 kGy. DSC is also used to determine the multiple kinetic processes in an isoconversional PEO melting using Friedman differential analysis. Gamma irradiation is found to generate newer functional groups established from FTIR study. FTIR spectra of generated peaks viz. -C=O, -C=C- exhibit scission dominated irradiation induced in presence of air. Contribution of cross-linkage which is higher in liquid irradiation is also proved from FTIR. The studied observations of DSC and FTIR are correlated with polymer microstructures. Hence, selective irradiation dose could be determined with respect to the exposed state (solid or solution) of polymer and utilized to tailor the properties of PEO.

We discuss a detailed study of the variation of shear viscosity, $η$, with temperature and baryon chemical potential within the framework of Polyakov$-$Nambu$-$Jona-Lasinio model. $η$ is found to depend strongly on the spectral width of the quasi-particles present in the model. The variation of $η$ across the phase diagram has distinctive features for different kinds of transitions. These variations have been used to study the possible location of the Critical End Point (CEP), and cross-checked with similar studies of variation of specific heat. Finally using a parameterization of freeze-out surface in heavy-ion collision experiments, the variation of shear viscosity to entropy ratio has also been discussed as a function of the center of mass energy of collisions.

A search for the quantum chromodynamics (QCD) critical point was performed by the STAR experiment at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider, using dynamical fluctuations of unlike particle pairs. Heavy-ion collisions were studied over a large range of collision energies with homogeneous acceptance and excellent particle identification, covering a significant range in the QCD phase diagram where a critical point may be located. Dynamical $Kπ$, $pπ$, and $Kp$ fluctuations as measured by the STAR experiment in central 0-5\% Au+Au collisions from center-of-mass collision energies $\rm \sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7 to 200 GeV are presented. The observable $\rm ν_{dyn}$ was used to quantify the magnitude of the dynamical fluctuations in event-by-event measurements of the $Kπ$, $pπ$, and $Kp$ pairs. The energy dependences of these fluctuations from central 0-5\% Au+Au collisions all demonstrate a smooth evolution with collision energy.

We present here an exploratory and investigatory study of the requirements, design, and implementation of two opensource software systems: the Distributed Modular Audio Recognition Framework (DMARF), and the General Intensional Programming System (GIPSY). The inception, development, and evolution of the two systems have overlapped and in terms of the involved developers, as well as in their applications. DMARF is a platform independent collection of algorithms for pattern recognition, identification and signal processing in audio and natural language text samples, become a rich platform for the research community in particular to use, test, and compare various algorithms in the broad field of pattern recognition and machine learning. Intended as a platform for intensional programming, GIPSY's inception was intended to push the field of intensional programming further, overcoming limitations in the available tools two decades ago. In this study, we present background research into the two systems and elaborate on their motivations and the requirements that drove and shaped their design and implementation. We subsequently elaborate in more depth about various aspects their architectural design, including the elucidation of some use cases, domain models, and the overall class diagram of the major components. Moreover, we investigated existing design patterns in both systems and provided a detailed view of the involved components in such patterns. Furthermore, we delve deeper into the guts of both systems, identifying code smells and suggesting possible refactorings. Patchsets of implementations of selected refactorings have been collected into patchsets and could be committed into future releases of the two systems, pending a review and approval of the developers and maintainers of DMARF and GIPSY.

The STAR collaboration presents for the first time two-dimensional di-hadron correlations with identified leading hadrons in 200 GeV central Au+Au and minimum-bias d+Au collisions to explore hadronization mechanisms in the quark gluon plasma. The enhancement of the jet-like yield for leading pions in Au+Au data with respect to the d+Au reference and the absence of such an enhancement for leading non-pions (protons and kaons) are discussed within the context of a quark recombination scenario. The correlated yield at large angles, specifically in the \emph{ridge region}, is found to be significantly higher for leading non-pions than pions. The consistencies of the constituent quark scaling, azimuthal harmonic model and a mini-jet modification model description of the data are tested, providing further constraints on hadronization.

We identified a component of the correlation that is $Δη$-independent, which is likely dominated by anisotropic flow and flow fluctuations. It was also found to be independent of $η$ within the measured range of pseudorapidity $|η|<1$. The relative flow fluctuation was found to be $34\% \pm 2\% (stat.) \pm 3\% (sys.)$ for particles of transverse momentum $p_{T}$ less than $2$ GeV/$c$. The $Δη$-dependent part may be attributed to nonflow correlations, and is found to be $5\% \pm 2\% (sys.)$ relative to the flow of the measured second harmonic cumulant at $|Δη| > 0.7$.

Event-by-event fluctuations of the ratio of inclusive charged to photon multiplicities at forward rapidity in Au+Au collision at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$=200 GeV have been studied. Dominant contribution to such fluctuations is expected to come from correlated production of charged and neutral pions. We search for evidences of dynamical fluctuations of different physical origins. Observables constructed out of moments of multiplicities are used as measures of fluctuations. Mixed events and model calculations are used as baselines. Results are compared to the dynamical net-charge fluctuations measured in the same acceptance. A non-zero statistically significant signal of dynamical fluctuations is observed in excess to the model prediction when charged particles and photons are measured in the same acceptance. We find that, unlike dynamical net-charge fluctuation, charge-neutral fluctuation is not dominated by correlation due to particle decay. Results are compared to the expectations based on the generic production mechanism of pions due to isospin symmetry, for which no significant (<1%) deviation is observed.

Fluctuations of conserved quantum numbers are associated with the corresponding susceptibilities because of the symmetry of the system. The underlying fact is that these fluctuations as defined through the static correlators become identical to the direct calculation of these susceptibilities defined through the thermodynamic derivatives, due to the fluctuation-dissipation theorem. Through a rigorous exercise we explicitly show that a diagrammatic calculation of the static correlators associated with the conserved quark number fluctuations and the corresponding susceptibilities are possible in case of mean field theories, if the implicit dependence of the mean fields on the quark chemical potential are taken into account appropriately. As an aside we also give an analytical prescription for obtaining the implicit dependence of the mean fields on the quark chemical potential.

The Balitskii-Fadin-Kuraev-Lipatov (BFKL) multi-Pomeron model of Levin and Rezaeian, with extension to the gluon saturation region, is applied to long-range pseudorapidity correlations on relative azimuth for low momentum final-state hadrons produced in $\sqrt{s}$ = 200~GeV and 7~TeV p+p collisions. The multi-Pomeron exchange probabilities in the model were estimated by fitting the minimum-bias p+p multiplicity frequency distributions. The multi-Pomeron model prediction for the amplitude of the minimum-bias average quadrupole correlation, proportional to $\cos 2(φ_1 - φ_2)$, is consistent with the 200~GeV data when theoretically expected gluon saturation momentum scales are used. Correlation predictions for the high multiplicity 7~TeV p+p collision data are also consistent with the long-range pseudorapidity correlations at small relative azimuth observed in the data. The results presented here show that the present application of a multiple parton-shower, gluon interference mechanism for generating the long-range pseudorapidity, azimuthal quadrupole correlation is not excluded by the data.

For Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}}$ = 62.4 and 39 GeV we report $v_2${2} for $p_T< 2$ GeV/c. $v_2${2} and $v_2${4} are non-zero at low and intermediate $p_T$ at 200 GeV, and $v_2${2} is consistent with zero at low $p_T$ at other energies. The $v_2${2} at the two lower beam energies is systematically lower than at $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = $ 200 GeV for $p_T < 1$ GeV/c. This difference may suggest that charm quarks interact less strongly with the surrounding nuclear matter at those two lower energies compared to $\sqrt{s_{\rm NN}} = 200$ GeV.

The $D^0$ meson yields in central Au+Au collisions are strongly suppressed compared to those in $p$+$p$ scaled by $N_{bin}$, for transverse momenta $p_{T}>3$ GeV/$c$, demonstrating significant energy loss of charm quarks in the hot and dense medium. An enhancement at intermediate $p_{T}$ is also observed. Model calculations including strong charm-medium interactions and coalescence hadronization describe our measurements.

Local parity-odd domains are theorized to form inside a Quark-Gluon-Plasma (QGP) which has been produced in high-energy heavy-ion collisions. The local parity-odd domains manifest themselves as charge separation along the magnetic field axis via the chiral magnetic effect (CME). The experimental observation of charge separation has previously been reported for heavy-ion collisions at the top RHIC energies. In this paper, we present the results of the beam-energy dependence of the charge correlations in Au+Au collisions at midrapidity for center-of-mass energies of 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39 and 62.4 GeV from the STAR experiment. After background subtraction, the signal gradually reduces with decreased beam energy, and tends to vanish by 7.7 GeV. The implications of these results for the CME will be discussed.

We present results of analyses of two-pion interferometry in Au+Au collisions at $\sqrt{s_{NN}}$ = 7.7, 11.5, 19.6, 27, 39, 62.4 and 200 GeV measured in the STAR detector as part of the RHIC Beam Energy Scan program. The extracted correlation lengths (HBT radii) are studied as a function of beam energy, azimuthal angle relative to the reaction plane, centrality, and transverse mass ($m_{T}$) of the particles. The azimuthal analysis allows extraction of the eccentricity of the entire fireball at kinetic freeze-out. The energy dependence of this observable is expected to be sensitive to changes in the equation of state. A new global fit method is studied as an alternate method to directly measure the parameters in the azimuthal analysis. The eccentricity shows a monotonic decrease with beam energy that is qualitatively consistent with the trend from all model predictions and quantitatively consistent with a hadronic transport model.

In addition, the net-proton $dv_1/dy|_{y=0}$ changes sign twice between 7.7 and 39 GeV. The proton and net-proton results qualitatively resemble predictions of a hydrodynamic model with a first-order phase transition from hadronic matter to deconfined matter, and differ from hadronic transport calculations.

The spectrum in the $ω$-like and $φ$-like regions can be well described by the hadronic cocktail simulation. In the $ρ$-like region, however, the vacuum $ρ$ spectral function cannot describe the shape of the dielectron excess. In this range, an enhancement of 1.77$\pm$0.11(stat.)$\pm$0.24(sys.)$\pm$0.33(cocktail) is determined with respect to the hadronic cocktail simulation that excludes the $ρ$ meson. The excess yield in the $ρ$-like region increases with the number of collision participants faster than the $ω$ and $φ$ yields. Theoretical models with broadened $ρ$ contributions through interactions with constituents in the hot QCD medium provide a consistent description of the dilepton mass spectra for the measurement presented here and the earlier data at the Super Proton Synchrotron energies.

We report measurements of Upsilon meson production in p+p, d+Au, and Au+Au collisions using the STAR detector at RHIC. We compare the Upsilon yield to the measured cross section in p+p collisions in order to quantify any modifications of the yield in cold nuclear matter using d+Au data and in hot nuclear matter using Au+Au data separated into three centrality classes. Our p+p measurement is based on three times the statistics of our previous result. We obtain a nuclear modification factor for Upsilon(1S+2S+3S) in the rapidity range |y|<1 in d+Au collisions of R_dAu = 0.79 +/- 0.24 (stat.) +/- 0.03 (sys.) +/- 0.10 (pp sys.). A comparison with models including shadowing and initial state parton energy loss indicates the presence of additional cold-nuclear matter suppression. Similarly, in the top 10% most-central Au+Au collisions, we measure a nuclear modification factor of R_AA=0.49 +/- 0.1 (stat.) +/- 0.02 (sys.) +/- 0.06 (pp sys.), which is a larger suppression factor than that seen in cold nuclear matter. Our results are consistent with complete suppression of excited-state Upsilon mesons in Au+Au collisions. The additional suppression in Au+Au is consistent with the level expected in model calculations that include the presence of a hot, deconfined Quark-Gluon Plasma. However, understanding the suppression seen in d+Au is still needed before any definitive statements about the nature of the suppression in Au+Au can be made.

The Hydrogenated Diamond Like Carbon (HDLC) thin films are deposited on Silicon substrate at room temperature using asymmetric capacitively coupled RF plasma with varying flow rates of methane. These films are undergone annealing at high vacuum and high temperature furnace. The as-prepared and annealed HDLC films have been depth profiled for hydrogen using the resonance at 6.44 MeV in nuclear reaction between fluoride ion beam and HDLC. The as prepared films exhibit non-uniform depth distribution of hydrogen: it decreases with depth. Annealing in vacuum brings about a significant desorption of hydrogen from the films. Loss of hydrogen, albeit in much lower proportions, is also induced by the bombarding beam. The films also experience a mild loss of carbon, as shown by proton backscattering spectrometry, during high vacuum annealing. The depth profiles of hydrogen in the annealed films are indicative of the prevalence of graphitic carbon near interface between film and substrate.

We report on a polarization measurement of inclusive $J/ψ$ mesons in the di-electron decay channel at mid-rapidity at 2 $<p_{T}<$ 6 GeV/$c$ in $p+p$ collisions at $\sqrt{s}$ = 200 GeV. Data were taken with the STAR detector at RHIC. The $J/ψ$ polarization measurement should help to distinguish between different models of the $J/ψ$ production mechanism since they predict different $p_{T}$ dependences of the $J/ψ$ polarization. In this analysis, $J/ψ$ polarization is studied in the helicity frame. The polarization parameter $λ_θ$ measured at RHIC becomes smaller towards high $p_{T}$, indicating more longitudinal $J/ψ$ polarization as $p_{T}$ increases. The result is compared with predictions of presently available models.

Two-dimensional angular correlation data from the STAR experiment at RHIC and from the LHC experiments provide critical information about dynamical processes in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. The principal correlation structures of interest are a broad jet-related peak at small relative azimuth ($φ$) extending to large relative pseudorapidity ($η$), the dijet ridge at large relative azimuth, and an independent double ridge on $φ$ represented by a quadrupole function. The broad peak at small relative azimuth has been attributed, in large part, to initial-state fluctuations and hydrodynamic flow which produce higher-order harmonics on $φ$. That conjecture is challenged in this paper. It is shown that the net effect of additional higher harmonic model elements is to describe small, non-Gaussian (NG) shapes in the broad jet-related peak. The quadrupole correlation, which is also conventionally attributed to hydrodynamic flow, is considered within the Balitsky - Fadin - Kuraev - Lipatov (BFKL) Pomeron framework. Preliminary results using this model for the quadrupole correlation for particle production from 200 GeV $p+p$ collisions are shown to be consistent with recent data from STAR.

Rietveld analysis of both these structures reveals them to be tetragonal with space group P4mm. It is found that increase in Li do** increases the optical band gap. Presence of additional hardening dopant MnO2 is found to have a uniform behavior for both these composition. With increasing MnO2 concentration, the band gap decreases indicative of increase in B-site cation and O-p orbitals. Different valences of the Mn ions and relative difference in the ionic radii of the Mn ions and Nb ion are most likely the reason for these optical properties.

To ascertain the isolated effects of octahedral distortions, the electronic and optical properties of the monoclinic $P2_1/n$ (at room temperature), monoclinic $I2/m$ (at ${\rm 430K}$), tetragonal $I4/m$ (at ${\rm 613K}$) and the cubic $Fm\bar{3}m$ (at ${\rm 660K}$) phases have been studied in terms of the electronic structure, dielectric constant, optical conductivity and electron energy loss spectroscopy using density functional theory. ${\rm Ca}_2{\rm ScSbO}_6$, on the other hand, shows only a $P2_1/n$ phase at room temperature and its properties have been been compared with the corresponding ${\rm Sr}$ compound. UV-Vis spectroscopic studies of the optical properties of the room-temperature phase of these $d^0$ double perovskite have been performed and presence of large direct bandgap for both the compounds have been reported. The electronic bandgaps for the room temperature phases is found to be in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values obtained using the Kubelka-Munk function. Interestingly, in contrast to other Sc-based $d^0$ double perovskites, with increasing octahedral distortions, the effective $t_{\rm 2g}$ bandwidth remains unaffected while the states forming the band change due to changes in unit cell orientation, leading to small effects on the electronic and optical properties.

The data are compared to high-$\pt$ STAR results and previously published BNL Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider results. Comparing with model calculations, it is found that the invariant yields at low $\pt$ are significantly above hydrodynamic flow predictions but are consistent with models that include color screening and regeneration.

The scanning electron micrograph of the sample taken at the room temperature confirms the formation of a fairly homogenous structure and well-formed grains with sharp boundaries. From the Rietveld analysis, it was found that the structure of the material is tetragonal with space group P4mm. The scaling behavior of imaginary part of the electric modulus suggests that the relaxation is described by the same mechanism at various temperatures. The values of the electromechanical coupling factor ($\rm{k_p}$), the high mechanical quality factor ($\rm{Q_m}$) and the piezoelectric coefficient ($\rm{d}_{33}$) of the synthesized sintered & poled ceramics gives a good set of values for the piezoelectric properties when compared with related materials, useful for various interesting piezoelectric device applications.

We report the beam energy (\sqrt s_{NN} = 7.7 - 200 GeV) and collision centrality dependence of the mean (M), standard deviation (σ), skewness (S), and kurtosis (κ) of the net-proton multiplicity distributions in Au+Au collisions. The measurements are carried out by the STAR experiment at midrapidity (|y| < 0.5) and within the transverse momentum range 0.4 < pT < 0.8 GeV/c in the first phase of the Beam Energy Scan program at the Relativistic Heavy Ion Collider. These measurements are important for understanding the Quantum Chromodynamic (QCD) phase diagram. The products of the moments, Sσand κσ^{2}, are sensitive to the correlation length of the hot and dense medium created in the collisions and are related to the ratios of baryon number susceptibilities of corresponding orders. The products of moments are found to have values significantly below the Skellam expectation and close to expectations based on independent proton and anti-proton production. The measurements are compared to a transport model calculation to understand the effect of acceptance and baryon number conservation, and also to a hadron resonance gas model.

The differential cross section and spin asymmetries for neutral pions produced within the intermediate pseudorapidity range 0.8 < η < 2.0 in polarized proton-proton collisions at sqrt{s} = 200 GeV are presented. Neutral pions were detected using the endcap electromagnetic calorimeter in the STAR detector at RHIC. The cross section was measured over a transverse momentum range of 5 < p_T < 16 GeV/c and is found to be within the scale uncertainty of a next-to-leading order perturbative QCD calculation. The longitudinal double-spin asymmetry, A_LL, is measured in the same pseudorapidity range. This quantity is sensitive to the gluonic contribution to the proton spin, Δg(x), at low Bjorken-x (down to x approx 0.01), where it is less constrained by measurements at central pseudorapidity. The measured A_LL is consistent with model predictions. The parity-violating asymmetry, A_L, is also measured and found to be consistent with zero. The transverse single-spin asymmetry, A_N, is measured within a previously unexplored kinematic range in Feynman-x and p_T. Such measurements may aid our understanding of the on-set and kinematic dependence of the large asymmetries observed at more forward pseudorapidity (η approx 3) and their underlying mechanisms. The A_N results presented are consistent with a twist-3 model prediction of a small asymmetry within the present kinematic range.

In recent years it has become conventional practice to include higher-order cylindrical harmonics in the phenomenological description of two-particle angular correlations from ultra-relativistic heavy-ion collisions. These model elements, whose dependence on relative azimuth angle has the form $\cos[m(φ_1-φ_2)]$ where $m > 2$, were introduced to support a hydrodynamic flow interpretation of the same-side ($|φ_1-φ_2| < π/2$) 2D peak in the correlations. Previous studies have shown that the $m > 2$ harmonics are not required by the data, that they destabilize the fitting models, and that their net effect is to decompose the same-side peak into two components, one being dependent on and the other being independent of relative pseudorapidity. Thus we are lead to question whether descriptions of angular correlation data including higher-order harmonics inform our understanding of the same-side peak or heavy-ion collisions in general. Results from analysis of two-dimensional angular correlation data from the Relativistic Heavy-Ion Collider (RHIC) and the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) show that the RHIC data do not exclude a single-Gaussian hypothesis for the same-side peak. We find that the net effect of including the $m = 3$ harmonic or azimuth sextupole in the fitting model is the inclusion of small non-Gaussian dependence in the mathematical description of the same-side peak. Those non-Gaussian effects are systematically insignificant and can be accommodated by minor perturbations to the same-side 2D Gaussian peak model, which act locally at small relative azimuth. We also demonstrate that the 0-1% 2D angular correlation data for 2.76 TeV Pb+Pb collisions from ATLAS, which display an away-side double peak on azimuth, do not require a sextupole and exclude a positive same-side sextupole.
