Segmentation of the sigmoid colon is a crucial aspect of treating diverticulitis. It enables accurate identification and localisation of inflammation, which in turn helps healthcare professionals make informed decisions about the most appropriate treatment options. This research presents a novel deep learning architecture for segmenting the sigmoid colon from Computed Tomography (CT) images using a modified 3D U-Net architecture. Several variations of the 3D U-Net model with modified hyper-parameters were examined in this study. Pyramid pooling (PyP) and channel-spatial Squeeze and Excitation (csSE) were also used to improve the model performance. The networks were trained using manually annotated sigmoid colon. A five-fold cross-validation procedure was used on a test dataset to evaluate the network's performance. As indicated by the maximum Dice similarity coefficient (DSC) of 56.92+/-1.42%, the application of PyP and csSE techniques improves segmentation precision. We explored ensemble methods including averaging, weighted averaging, majority voting, and max ensemble. The results show that average and majority voting approaches with a threshold value of 0.5 and consistent weight distribution among the top three models produced comparable and optimal results with DSC of 88.11+/-3.52%. The results indicate that the application of a modified 3D U-Net architecture is effective for segmenting the sigmoid colon in Computed Tomography (CT) images. In addition, the study highlights the potential benefits of integrating ensemble methods to improve segmentation precision.

This study focuses on develo** precise machine learning (ML) regression models for predicting energy bandgap values based on chemical compositions and crystal structures. The primary aim is to match the accuracy of predictions derived from GGA-PBE calculations and validate them through density functional theory (DFT)-based band structure calculations. We assessed eight standalone ML regression models, including AdaBoost, Bagging, CatBoost, LGBM, RF, DT, GB, and XGB. These models were analyzed for their ability to predict GGA-PBE bandgap values across diverse material structures and compositions, using a dataset containing bandgap values for 106,113 compounds. Additionally, we constructed four ensemble models using the stacking method and seven using the bagging method. These ensemble models incorporated RidgeCV and LassoCV to explore if ensemble techniques could enhance prediction accuracy. The dataset was divided into subsets of varying sizes: 10,000, 25,000, 50,000, and 100,000 entries. We determined feature importance through permutation techniques and established a correlation coefficient matrix using the Pearson correlation method. The Random Forest (RF) model emerged as the top performer among standalone models, achieving an R2 value of 0.943 and an RMSE value of 0.504 eV. Bagging regression demonstrated improved performance across different dataset sizes with streamlined feature selection. Ensemble models, particularly bagging, consistently outperformed standalone models, achieving the best R2 value of 0.948 and an RMSE value of 0.479 eV in the test dataset. Using the best-performing model, we predicted bandgap values for new half-Heusler compounds with 18 valence electron counts. These predictions were successfully validated using accurate DFT calculations. DFT calculations indicated that the newly predicted compounds are narrow bandgap semiconductors with dynamic stability.

In this study, we attempted to model vacancy ordered half Heusler compounds with 18 valence electron count (VHH) derived from 19 VEC compounds such as TiNiSb such that the compositions will be Ti0.75NiSb, Zr0.75NiSb and Hf0.75NiSb with semiconducting behavior. The main motivation is that such a vacancy-ordered phase not only introduces semi conductivity but also it disrupts the phonon conducting path in HH alloys and thus reduces the thermal conductivity and as a consequence enhances the thermoelectric figure of merit. In order to predict the formation energy (ΔHf) from composition and crystal structure we have used 4684 compounds for their ΔHf values are available in the material project database and trained a machine learning model with R2 value of 0.943. Using this trained model, we have predicted the ΔHf of a list of VHH. From the predicted database of VHH we have selected Zr0.75NiSb and Hf0.75NiSb to validate the machine learning prediction using accurate DFT calculation. The calculated ΔHf for these two compounds from DFT calculation are found to be comparable with our ML prediction. The calculated electronic and lattice dynamics properties show that these materials are narrow band gap semiconductors and are dynamically stable as their all-phonon dispersion curves are having positive frequencies. The calculated Seebeck coefficient, electrical conductivity as well as thermal conductivity, power factor and thermoelectric figure of merit are analyzed.

The increasing relevance of energy storage technologies demands high-capacity cathode materials for Li-ion batteries. Recently, Li-rich defect anti-fluorite Li$_5$FeO$_4$ has emerged as a high-capacity cathode material exhibiting simultaneous anionic and cationic redox without significant oxygen release. But suffers from irreversible structural change and capacity fade during cycling. Herein we investigate the suppressed capacity fade reported in Co substituted Li$_5$FeO$_4$ and establish the optimal performance through tuning the concentration and oxidation state of Co. We have substituted Co at the Fe site and carried out a detailed analysis of structural, magnetic, electronic, and electrochemical properties using first-principles density functional theory calculations. The extended stability and suppressed capacity fading are found only in specific compositions depending on the Co/Li concentration and the oxidation state of Co. The reasons behind suppressed capacity fading in Co substituted systems have been unveiled on the basis of bonding analyses and proposed as a strategy to suppress the voltage fading reported in Li-rich materials due to transition metal migration. From the evaluation of thermodynamic stability and electronic structure, Li$_{5.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$O$_4$, Li$_5$Fe$_{0.25}$Co$_{0.75}$O$_4$, and Li$_{4.5}$Fe$_{0.5}$Co$_{0.5}$O$_4$ are found to exhibit better electrical conductivity than Li$_5$FeO$_4$. All these systems have voltage in the range of 3 to 5 V and exhibit three dimensional Li diffusion pathway with a diffusion barrier height of around 0.3 eV. From Li$_5$Fe$_{0.25}$Co$_{0.75}$O$_4$, one can delithiate three Li-ions without structural change and oxygen release, therefore expected to acquire a reversible capacity of around 513 mAh/g. Moreover, as in pristine Li$_5$FeO$_4$, the selected Co substituted systems also exhibit simultaneous anionic and cationic redox without significant O2 release.

The alloys with 8/18/24 valence electron count (VEC) are promising candidates for efficient energy conversion and refrigeration applications at low as well as high temperatures. The full potential linearized augmented plane wave method as implemented in WIEN2k code was used to investigate electronic structure and TE transport properties with the PBE$-$GGA and TB$-$mBJ exchange potentials and Boltzmann transport theory. The calculated single crystal elastic constants, phonon dispersion and phonon density of states confirm that these systems are mechanically and dynamically stable. The TE transport properties is calculated by including the lattice part of thermal conductivity ($κ_{L}$) obtained from two methods one from the calculated elastic properties calculation ($κ^{elastic}_{L}$) and the other from phonon dispersion curve ($κ^{phonon}_{L}$). The strong phonon$-$phonon scattering by large mass difference/strain fluctuation of isovalent/aliovalent substitution at Ti/Sn sites of Fe$_{2}$TiSn reduces the lattice thermal conductivity which results in high \textit{ZT} value of 0.81 at 900\,K for Fe$_{2}$Sc$_{0.25}$Ti$_{0.5}$Ta$_{0.25}$Al$_{0.5}$Bi$_{0.5}$. The comparative analysis of TE transport properties using the band structures calculated with the PBE$-$GGA and TB$-$mBJ functional shows that the \textit{ZT} value obtained from TB$-$mBJ scheme is found to be significantly higher than that based on PBE$-$GGA. The calculated relatively low lattice thermal conductivity and high \textit{ZT} values suggest that isovalent/aliovalent substituted Fe$_{2}$TiSn are promising candidates for medium to high temperature waste heat recovery.

Phase transition between ferroelectricity and quantum paraelectricity via non-thermal tuning parameters can lead to quantum critical behavior and associated emergent phenomena. Ferroelectric quantum critical systems are, however, rare despite the abundance of ferroelectric materials. Here, we show theoretically that in ferroelectric-paraelectric heterostructures, it is plausible to induce quantum paraelectricity where the quantum temperature (i.e., the temperature below with the onset of ferroelectricity is suppressed by quantum fluctuations) can be tuned by the thickness ratio. This, in turn, can effect a quantum phase transition between effective ferroelectric and quantum paraelectric states, using the thickness ratio as the tuning parameter. The associated quantum critical region offers unexpected prospects in the field of ferroelectric quantum criticality.

In this study, we have reported electronic structure, lattice dynamics, and thermoelectric (TE) transport properties of a new family of pentanary substituted TiNiSn systems using the 18 valence electron count (VEC) rule. From our calculated band structures and density of states, we show that by preserving the 18 VEC through aliovalent substitutions at the Ti site of TiNiSn semiconducting behavior can be achieved, and hence one can tune the band structure and band gap to maximize the thermoelectric figure of merit (ZT) value. Two approaches have been used for calculating the lattice thermal conductivity ($κ_{L}$), one by fully solving the linearized phonon Boltzmann transport (LBTE) equation from first$-$principles anharmonic lattice dynamics calculations implemented in Phono3py code and other using Slack's equation with calculated Debye temperature and Grüneisen parameter using the calculated elastic constant values. The calculated $κ_{L}$ values decrease from parent TiNiSn to pentanary substituted TiNiSn systems as expected due to fluctuation in atomic mass. The calculated $κ_{L}$ for Hf containing systems La$_{0.25}$Hf$_{0.5}$V$_{0.25}$NiSn and non Hf containing system La$_{0.25}$Zr$_{0.5}$V$_{0.25}$NiSn calculated from Phono3py (Slack's equation) are found to be 0.37 (1.04) and 0.16 (0.95) W/mK, at 550\,K, respectively and the corresponding ZT value are found to be 0.54 (0.4) and 0.77 (0.53). Among the considered systems, the calculated phonon spectra and heat capacity show that La$_{0.25}$Hf$_{0.5}$V$_{0.25}$NiSn has more optical$-$acoustic band mixing which creates more phonon$-$phonon scattering and hence lower the $κ_{L}$ value and maximizing the ZT. Based on the calculated results we conclude that one can design high-efficiency thermoelectric materials by considering the 18 VEC rule with aliovalent substitution.

The polyanionic compound Na2MnSiO4 is regarded as one of the promising cathode materials for Na-ion batteries due to good specific capacity with its attractive prospect of utilization of two electrons in the redox processes. So, in this study, we have performed the thermodynamic and electronic structure analysis of Na2MnSiO4 using first principles density functional theory calculations. The intermediate ground state configurations for Na2MnSiO4of Na de-intercalation were found using the cluster expansion method and are used to obtain the 0 K voltage profile as a function of Na concentration. This material shows an average voltage of 4.2 V and the finite temperature analysis at 300 K using Monte Carlo simulations indicates that this material undergoes two phase mixing when desodiate beyond 1.5 Na/f.u. The chemical bonding interactions between the constituents are analyzed using the density of states, crystal orbital Hamilton population, charge density, charge transfer and electron localization function analyses. From these analyses we found that the interaction between Mn and O is iono-covalent and that between Si-O is mainly covalent in nature. The involvement of oxygen in the redox reaction apart from the transition metal is identified using the Bader charge analysis. Relevant Na diffusion pathways and their corresponding calculated energy barriers are compared with the partially Fe substituted Na2MnSiO4 to understand the effect of Mn-site substitution on the process of Na migration through this material.

Crystalline materials with broken inversion symmetry can exhibit a spontaneous electric polarization, which originates from a microscopic electric dipole moment. Long-range polar or anti-polar order of such permanent dipoles gives rise to ferroelectricity or antiferroelectricity, respectively. However, the recently discovered antiferroelectrics of fluorite structure (HfO$_2$ and ZrO$_2$) are different: A non-polar phase transforms into a polar phase by spontaneous inversion symmetry breaking upon the application of an electric field. Here, we show that this structural transition in antiferroelectric ZrO$_2$ gives rise to a negative capacitance, which is promising for overcoming the fundamental limits of energy efficiency in electronics. Our findings provide insight into the thermodynamically 'forbidden' region of the antiferroelectric transition in ZrO$_2$ and extend the concept of negative capacitance beyond ferroelectricity. This shows that negative capacitance is a more general phenomenon than previously thought and can be expected in a much broader range of materials exhibiting structural phase transitions.

Usually the ions of a particular element in solids are in positive or negative oxidation states, depending upon the chemical environment. It is highly unusual for an atom having both positive as well as negative oxidation states simultaneously within the same structural framework in a particular compound. Our structural and chemical bonding analyses show that the hydrogen ions in the transition metal ammine borohydrides (TMABHs) with the chemical formula M(BH4)2(NH3)2 (M = Sc, Ti, V, Cr, Mn, Fe, Co, Ni, Cu and Zn) have both positive and negative oxidation states. Our detailed analyses confirm the amphoteric behaviour of hydrogen where hydrogen closer to boron is in negative oxidation state and that closer to nitrogen is in the positive oxidation state. From the spin polarised van der Waals interaction included calculation, we found that TMABHs has antiferromagnetic ordering as ground state. Our nudged elastic band calculation show that the migration barrier for ammonia diffusion in these materials are more than 1 eV and hence these compounds may be used for energy storage applications since they have high weight percentage of hydrogen. The presence of amphoteric behaviour of hydrogen in TMABHs has implication in designing volume efficient hydrides for hydrogen storage applications.

The physical properties of La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$ with a 2D-like Ruddlesden-Popper-type crystal structure are extraordinarily dependent on temperature and chemical substitution. By introducing Al$^{3+}$ atoms ($x$) randomly at the Ni-sites, the average oxidation state for the two non-equivalent Ni-cations is tuned and adopt values below the average of +2.67 in La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$. La$_4$Ni$_{3-x}$Al$_x$O$_{10}$ is a solid solution for $x=0.00$ to 1.00, and are prepared by the citric acid method. The samples adopt a slightly distorted monoclinic structure (P21/a), evidenced by peak broadening of the (117) reflection. We report on a remarkable effect on the electronic properties induced by tiny amounts of homogeneously distributed Al-cations, with clear correspondence between resistivity, magnetization, diffraction, and DFT data. DFT shows that electronically there is no significant difference between the non-equivalent Ni atoms and no tendency towards any Ni$^{3+}$/Ni$^{2+}$ charge ordering. The electron do** via Al-substitution has a profound effect on electric and magnetic properties. The resistivity changes from metallic to semiconducting with increasing band-gap at higher Al-levels, consistent with results from DFT. The metal-to-metal transition reported for La$_4$Ni$_3$O$_{10}$, which is often interpreted as a charge density wave, is maintained until $x = 0.15$ Al-level. However, the temperature characteristics of the resistivity change already at very low Al-levels (below 0.03). A coupling of the metal-to-metal transition to the lattice is evidenced by an anomaly in the unit cell dimensions. No long-range magnetic order is detected by powder neutron diffraction. The introduction of the non-magnetic Al$^{3+}$ changes the Ni$^{3+}$/Ni$^{2+}$ ratio and is likely to block double-exchange pathways by means of -Ni-O-Al-O-Ni- fragments into the network of corner shared octahedra with the emergence of possible short-range order in ferromagnetic like islands.

Superconducting nanowire single photon detectors are typically biased using a constant current source and shunted in a conductance which is over an order of magnitude larger than the peak normal domain conductance of the detector. While this design choice is required to ensure quenching of the normal domain, the use of a small load resistor limits the pulse amplitude, rising-edge slew rate, and recovery time of the detector. Here, we explore the possibility of actively quenching the normal domain, thereby removing the need to shunt the detector in a small resistance. We first consider the theoretical performance of an actively quenched superconducting nanowire single photon detector and, in comparison to a passively quenched device, we predict roughly an order of magnitude improvement in the slew rate and peak voltage achieved in this configuration. The experimental performance of actively and passively quenched superconducting nanowire single photon detectors are then compared. It is shown that, in comparison to a passively quenched device, the actively quenched detectors simultaneously exhibited improved count rates, dark count rates, and timing jitter.

The giant magnetoelectric coupling is a very rare phenomenon which has gained a lot of attention for the past few decades because of fundamental interest as well as practical applications. Here, we have successfully achieved the giant magnetoelectric coupling in PbTi1-xVxO3 (x= 0-1) with the help of a series of generalized-gradient-corrected (GGA), GGA including on-site coulomb repulsion (U) corrected spin polarized calculations based on accurate density functional theory. Our total energy calculations show that PbTi1-xVxO3 stabilizes in C-type antiferromagnetic ground state for x>0.123. With the substitution of V into PbTiO3, the tetragonal distortion is highly enhanced accompanied by a linear increase in polarization. In addition, our band structure analysis shows that for lower x values, the tendency to form 2Dmagnetism of PbTi1-xVxO3 decreases. A non-magnetic metallic ground state is observed for the paraelectric phase for V concentration (x) = 1 competing with a volume change of 10% showing a large magnetovolume effect. Our orbital projected DOS as well as orbital ordering analysis suggest that the orbital ordering plays a major role in the magnetic to non-magnetic transition when going from ferroelectric to paraelectric phase. The calculated magnetic anisotropic energy shows that the direction [110] is the easy axis of magnetization for x= 1 composition. The present study adds a new series of compounds to the magnetoelectric family with rarely existing giant coupling between electric and magnetic order parameters. These results show that such kind of materials can be used for novel practical applications where one can change the magnetic properties drastically (magnetic to non-magnetic as shown here) with external electric fieldand vice-versa.

In order to overcome the disadvantages of MgH2 towards its applications in on-board hydrogen storage, first principle calculations have been performed for Ti (2+, 3+, and 4+) substituted MgH2. Our calculated enthalpy of formation and H site energy implies that Ti substitution in Mg site reduces the stability of MgH2 which improve the hydrogen storage properties and Ti prefers to be in +4 oxidation state in MgH2. The bonding analyses through partial density of states, electron localization function and Bader charge of these systems confirm the existence of iono-covalent bonding. Electronic structure obtained from hybrid functional calculations show that intermediate bands (IB) are formed in Ti4+ substituted MgH2 which could improve the solar cell efficiencies due to multiple photon absorption from valence band to conduction band via IBs and converts low energy photons in the solar spectrum also into electricity. Further, our calculated carrier effective masses and optical absorption spectra show that Ti4+ substituted MgH2 is suitable for higher efficiency photovoltaic applications. Our results suggest that Ti4+ substituted MgH2 can be considered as a promising material for hydrogen storage as well as photovoltaic applications.

In order to establish the correlation between the magnetoelectric coupling and magnetic instability, we have studied the structural, magnetic, and ferroelectric properties of \textit{x}BaTiO${_3}$-(1-\textit{x})BiCoO${_3}$ as a function of BaTiO$_3$ concentration ($x$) and volume. The $G-$type antiferromagnetic ordering is found to be energetically favorable for $x<$ 0.45 and higher concentrations stabilize with nonmagnetic states. We observe metamagnetic spin state transitions associated with paraelectric to ferrolectric transitions as a function of volume and $x$ using synchrotron diffraction and computational studies, indicating a strong magnetoelectric coupling. Specifically for $x=$ 0.33 composition, a pressure induced high spin (HS) to low spin (LS) transition occurs when the volume is compressed below 5\%. Our orbital$-$projected density of states show a HS state for Co$^{3+}$ in the ferroelectric ground state for $x<$ 0.45 and the corresponding paraelectric phase is stable in the nonmagnetic state due to the stabilization of LS state as evident from our fixed$-$spin$-$moment calculations and magnetic measurements. High values of spontaneous ferroelectric polarizations are predicted for lower $x$ values which inversely vary with $x$ because of the reduction of tetragonality ($c/a$) with increase in $x$. Moreover, we find that the HS$-$LS transition point and magnetoelectric coupling strength can be varied by $x$.

The discovery of unusual negative thermal expansion (NTE) provides the opportunity to control the common but much desired property of thermal expansion, which is valuable not only in scientific interests but also in practical applications. However, most of the available NTE materials are limited to a narrow temperature range, and the NTE effect is generally weakened by means of various modifications. Here, we report an enhanced NTE effect that occurs over a wide temperature range (αV = -5.24 * 10-5 °C^-1, 25-575 ° C), and this NTE effect is accompanied by an abnormal enhanced tetragonality, a large spontaneous polarization, and a G-type antiferromagnetic ordering in the present perovskite-type ferroelectric of (1-x)PbTiO3-xBiCoO3. Specifically, for the composition of 0.5PbTiO3-0.5BiCoO3, an extensive volumetric contraction of ~4.8 % has been observed near the Curie temperature of 700 °C, which represents the highest level in PbTiO3-based ferroelectrics. According to our experimental and theoretical results, the giant NTE originates from a synergistic effect of the ferroelectrostriction and spin-crossover of cobalt on the crystal lattice. The actual NTE mechanism is contrasted with previous functional NTE materials, in which the NTE is simply coupled with one ordering such as electronic, magnetic, or ferroelectric ordering. The present study sheds light on the understanding of NTE mechanisms and it attests that NTE could be simultaneouslycoupled with different orderings, which will pave a new way toward the design of large NTE materials.

In order to identify potential hydrogen storage materials, worldwide attention has been focused on hydrides with high gravimetric and volumetric capacity. Hydrogen is a unique element that possess positive, negative or neutral oxidation state in solids depending upon the chemical environment. If one can find hydrogen storage materials where hydrogen is present in both negative and positive oxidation state within the same structural framework then one can accommodate hydrogen with high volume density. So, it is fundamentally as well as technologically important to identify compounds in which hydrogen is in amphoteric nature and understand the necessary criteria for its origin. The experimental structural analysis of Cyclotriborazane and Diammonium dodeca hydro-closo-dodecaborate insinuate the presence of hydrogen with anionic and cationic behavior within the same structure. In order to understand the role of van der Waals (vdW) interactions on structural parameters, we have considered 12 different vdW corrected functionals and found that the optPBE-vdW functional predicts the equilibrium structural parameters reliably with less than 0.009 % accuracy. So, the optPBE-vdW functional is used to calculate charge density, electron localization function, total as well as the partial density of state, Bader and Born effective charge etc. We have observed that hydrogen is exhibiting amphoteric behavior with H closer to B in the negatively charged state and that neighboring to N is in a positively charged state.

Typically, there are some exceptional cases in which hydrogen exhibits both anionic and cationic behavior in the same structural frame works. In this study we briefly explore an amphoteric behavior of hydrogen present in ammine bimetallic borohydrides with the chemical formula M1M2 (BH4)3 (NH3)2 (M1= Na; M2 = Zn, Mg) using the state-of-the-art density functional calculations. In order to establish the amphoteric behavior of hydrogen in M1M2 (BH4)3 (NH3)2, we have made detailed chemical bonding analyses using partial density of states, charge density, electron localization function, and Born effective charge. From these analyses we found that the hydrogen closer to boron is in negative oxidation state whereas the hydrogen closer to nitrogen is in positive oxidation state. To understand the effect of isoelectronic substitution on thermoelectric properties of TiCoSb based half - Heusler (HH) alloys, we have systematically studied the transport properties with substitution of Zr at Ti and Bi at Sb sites. The electronic structure of TixZr1-xCoSbxBi1-x (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) and parent TiCoSb are investigated using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave method and the thermoelectric transport properties are calculated on the basis of semiclassical Boltzmann transport theory. The band analysis of the calculated band structures reveal that TixZr1-xCoSbxBi1-x has semiconducting behavior with indirect band gap at x = 0.25, 0.5 concentration and direct band gap behavior at x = 0.75 concentration. The TixZr1-xCoSbxBi1-x (x = 0.25, 0.5, 0.75) compounds show smaller band gap values as compared to the pure TiCoSb. The d electrons of Ti/Zr and Co dominate the electronic transport properties of TixZr1-xCoSbxBi1-x system. All these systems follow the empirical rule of 18 valence-electron content to bring semiconductivity in HH alloys. The isoelectronic substitution in TiCoSb can tune the band structure by shifting the Fermi level. This provides us lot of possibilities to get the desired band gap values for designing thermoelectrics with high efficiency. In this study we have showed that the isoelectronic substitution at both Ti and Sb site of TiCoSb has very small effect for increasing the ZT values and one should go for isoelectronic substitution at any one sites of TiCoSb HH alloys alone to improve ZT.

The calculated structural parameters are in good agreement with the available theoretical data. The most stable phases of the Fe substituted systems are predicted from the formation energy hull generated using the cluster expansion method. The 66% of Fe substitution at the Ni site gives the most stable structure among all the Fe substituted systems. The bonding mechanisms of the considered systems are discussed based on the density of states (DOS) and charge density plot. Herein, we report on the basis of density functional calculations, phosphorene/AsP heterostructure could be a promising material for excitonic solar cells (XSCs). Our HSE06 functional calculations show that the band gap of both phosphorene and AsP fall exactly into the optimum value range according to XSCs requirement. The calculated effective mass of electrons and holes show anisotropic in nature with effective masses along $Γ$-X direction is lower than the $Γ$-Y direction and hence the charge transport will be faster along $Γ$-X direction. The wide energy range of light absorption confirms the potential use of these materials for solar cell applications. Interestingly, phosphorene and AsP monolayer forms a type-II band alignment which will enhance the separation of photogenerated charge carriers and hence the recombination rate will be lower which can further improve its photo-conversion efficiency if one use it in XSCs.

The structural, electronic, magnetic and ferroelectric properties of Pb free double perovskite multiferroic Bi2FeTiO6 are investigated using density functional theory within the general gradient approximation (GGA) method. Our structural optimization using total energy calculations for different potential structures show a minimum energy for a non-centrosymmetric rhombohedral structure with R3 space group. Bi2FeTiO6 is found to be an antiferromagnetic insulator with C-type magnetic ordering with bandgap value of 0.3 eV. The calculated magnetic moment of 3.52 μ_B at Fe site shows the high spin arrangement of 3d electrons which is also confirmed by our orbital projected density of states analysis. We have analyzed the characteristics of bonding present between the constituents of Bi2FeTiO6 with the help of calculated partial density of states and Born effective charges. The ground state of the nearest centrosymmetric structure is found to be a G-type antiferromagnet with half metallicity showing that by the application of external electric field we can not only get a polarized state but also change the magnetic ordering and electronic structure in the present compound indicating strong magnetoelectric coupling. The cation sites the coexistence of Bi 6s lone pair (bring disproportionate charge distribution) and Ti4+ d0 ions which brings covalency produces off-center displacement and favors a non-centrosymmetric ground state and thus ferroelectricity. Our Berry phase calculation gives a polarization of 48 \muCcm-2 for Bi2FeTiO6.

The electronic structures of TixZrx/2CoPbxTex, TixZrx/2Hfx/2CoPbxTex (x = 0.5), and the parent compound TiCoSb were investigated using the full potential linearized augmented plane wave method. The thermoelectric transport properties of these alloys are calculated on the basis of semi-classical Boltzmann transport theory. From the band structure calculations we show that the substitution of Zr,Hf in the Ti site and Pb and Te in the Sb site lower the band gap value and also change the indirect band (IB) gap of TiCoSb to the direct band (DB) gap. The calculated band gap of TiCoSb, TixZrx/2CoPbxTex, and TixZrx/2Hfx/2CoPbxTex are 1.04 eV (IB), 0.92 eV (DB), and 0.93 eV (DB), respectively. All these alloys follow the empirical rule of 18 valence-electron content which is essential for bringing semiconductivity in half Heusler alloys. It is shown that the substitution of Hf at the Ti site improve the ZT value (~1.05) at room temperature, whereas there is no significant difference in ZT is found at higher temperature. Based on the calculated thermoelectric transport properties, we conclude that the appropriate concentration of Hf substitution can further improve the thermoelectric performance of TixZrx/2Hfx/2CoPbxTex.

Using ab-initio total energy calculations based on density functional theory, the structural stability, electronic structure and chemical bonding of CaH2-xFx systems are investigated. The phase transition of fluorinated systems from orthorhombic to cubic structure has been observed at 18% fluorine doped CaH2. The phase stability analysis shows that CaH2-xFx systems are highly stable and the stability is directly correlating with their ionicity. Density of states (DOS) plot reveals that CaH2-xFx systems are insulators. Partial DOS and charge density analyses conclude that these systems are governed by ionic bonding. Our results show that H closer to F can be removed more easily than that far away from F and this is due to disproportionation induced in the bonding interaction by fluorination.

The magnetic and electronic properties of trilayer La4Ni3O8, similar to hole doped cuprates, are investigated by performing full-potential linearized augmented plane wave method-based spin-polarized calculations with LDA and GGA functionals including Hubbard U parameters to account for strong correlation effects. Based on these calculations, we found that La4Ni3O8 is a C-type antiferromagnetic (C-AFM) Mott insulator in agreement with previous experimental and theoretical observations. Our calculations suggest that Ni1+ and Ni2+ ions are found to be in high spin state with an average valency of +1.33. Intermediate band gap states are originated from dz2 electrons of both types of Ni ions after including the strong correlation effects. In order to understand the role of hole do** on electronic structure, phase stability, and magnetic properties of La4Ni3O8, similar calculations have been performed for La(4-x)Sr(x)Ni3O8 as a function of x, using the supercell approach. We have found that the hole do** brings insulator-to-metal transition without changing the C-AFM ordering though the magnetic moment is enhanced at both Ni sites. Moreover, these Ni atoms are always in an average valence state irrespective of hole do** or volume change. So the electronic properties of hole doped La4Ni3O8 can not be compared with hole doped cuprates which are high Tc.

We have investigated the crystal, electronic, and magnetic structure of Mn5O8 by means of state of-the-art density functional theory calculations and neutron powder diffraction (NPD) measurements. This compound stabilizes in the monoclinic structure with space group C2/m where the Mn ions are in the distorted octahedral and trigonal prismatic coordination with oxygen atoms. The calculated structural parameters based on total energy calculations are found to be in excellent agreement with low temperature NPD measurements when we accounted correct magnetic structure and Coulomb correlation effect into the computation. Bond strength analysis based on crystal orbital Hamiltonian population between constituents indicating strong anisotropy in the bonding behavior which results in layered nature of its crystal structure. Using fully relativistic generalized-gradient approximation with Hubbard U (GGA+U) we found that the magnetic ordering in Mn5O8 is A-type antiferromagnetic and the direction of easy axis is [1 0 0] in agreement with susceptibility and NPD measurements. However, the calculation without the inclusion of HubbardU leads to ferrimagnetic half metal as ground state contradictory to experimental findings, indicating the presence of strong Coulomb correlation effect in this material. The GGA calculations without Coulomb correction effect itself is sufficient to reproduce our experimentally observed magnetic moments in various Mn sites.

The spin transition in LaCoO3 is investigated by temperature-dependent resonant soft X-ray emission spectroscopy near the Co 2p absorption edges. This element-specific technique is more bulk sensitive with respect to the temperature induced spin-state of the Co3+ ions in LaCoO3 than other high-energy spectroscopic methods. The spin transition is interpreted and discussed with ab-initio density-functional theory within the fixed-spin moment method, which is found to yield consistent spectral functions to the experimental data. The spectral changes for LaCoO3 as a function of temperature suggest a change in spin-state as the temperature is raised from 85 to 300 K while the system remains in the same spin state as the temperature is further increased to 510 K.

Electronic band structure and optical properties of zinc monochalcogenides with zinc-blende- and wurtzite-type structures were studied using the ab initio density functional method within the LDA, GGA, and LDA+U approaches. Calculations of the optical spectra have been performed for the energy range 0-20 eV, with and without including spin-orbit coupling. Reflectivity, absorption and extinction coefficients, and refractive index have been computed from the imaginary part of the dielectric function using the Kramers--Kronig transformations. A rigid shift of the calculated optical spectra is found to provide a good first approximation to reproduce experimental observations for almost all the zinc monochalcogenide phases considered. By inspection of the calculated and experimentally determined band-gap values for the zinc monochalcogenide series, the band gap of ZnO with zinc-blende structure has been estimated.

The magnetoelectric behavior of BiFeO$_3$ has been explored on the basis of accurate density functional calculations. The structural, electronic, magnetic, and ferroelectric properties of BiFeO$_3$ are predicted correctly without including strong correlation effect in the calculation. Moreover, the experimentally-observed elongation of cubic perovskite-like lattice along the [111] direction is correctly reproduced. At high pressure we predicted a pressure-induced structural transition and the total energy calculations at expanded lattice show two lower energy ferroelectric phases, closer in energy to the ground state phase. Band-structure calculations show that BiFeO$_3$ will be an insulator in A- and G-type antiferromagnetic phases and a metal in other magnetic configurations. Chemical bonding in BiFeO$_3$ has been analyzed using various tools and electron localization function analysis shows that stereochemically active lone-pair electrons at the Bi sites are responsible for displacements of the Bi atoms from the centro-symmetric to the noncentrosymmetric structure and hence the ferroelectricity. A large ferroelectric polarization (88.7 $μ$C/cm$^{2}$) is predicted in accordance with recent experimental findings. The net polarization is found to mainly ($>$ 98%) originate from Bi atoms. Moreover the large scatter in experimentally reported polarization values is due to the large anisotropy in the spontaneous polarization.

Thin films of CdTe were deposited on glass substrates by thermal evaporation.
From the XRD measurements itis found that the films are of zinc-blende-type structure. Transmittance, absorption, extinction, and refractive coefficients are measured. Electronic structure, band parameters and optical spectra of CdTe were calculated from ab initio studies within the LDA and LDA+U approximations. It is shown that LDA underestimates the band gap, energy levels of the Cd-4d states, s-d coupling and band dispersion. However, it calculates the spin-orbit coupling correctly. LDA+U did not increase much the band gap value, but it corrected the s-d coupling by shifting the Cd-4d levels towards the experimentally determined location and by splitting the LDA-derived single s peak into two peaks, which originates from admixture of s and d states. It is shown that the sd coupling plays an important role in absorption and reflectivity constants. The calculated optical spectra fairly agree with experimental data. Independent of wave-vector scissors operator is found to be a good first approximation to shift rigidly the band gap of CdTe underestimated by LDA.

Electronic structure and band characteristics for zinc monochalcogenides with zinc-blende- and wurtzite-type structures are studied by first-principles density-functional-theory calculations with different approximations. It is shown that the local-density approximation underestimates the band gap and energy splitting between the states at the top of the valence band, misplaces the energy levels of the Zn-3d states, and overestimates the crystal-field-splitting energy. Regardless of the structure type considered, the spin-orbit-coupling energy is found to be overestimated for ZnO and underestimated for ZnS with wurtzite-type structure, and more or less correct for ZnSe and ZnTe with zinc-blende-type structure. The order of the states at the top of the valence band is found to be anomalous for ZnO in both zinc-blende- and wurtzite-type structure, but is normal for the other zinc monochalcogenides considered. It is shown that the Zn-3d electrons and their interference with the O-2p electrons are responsible for the anomalous order. The typical errors in the calculated band gaps and related parameters for ZnO originate from strong Coulomb correlations, which are found to be highly significant for this compound. The LDA+U approach is by and large found to correct the strong correlation of the Zn-3d electrons, and thus to improve the agreement with the experimentally established location of the Zn-3d levels compared with that derived from pure LDA calculations.

First-principles density-functional calculations have been performed for zinc monochalcogenides with zinc-blende- and wurtzite-type structures. It is shown that the local-density approximation underestimates the band gap, misplaces the energy levels of the Zn-3d states, and overestimates the crystal-field splitting energy. Without spinorbit coupling, the order of the states at the top of VB is found to be normal for all the ZnX phases considered. Upon inclusion of the spinorbit coupling in calculations, ZnO in zinc-blende- and wurtzite-type phases become anomalous. It is shown that the Zn-3d electrons are responsible for the anomalous order. The effective masses of electrons and holes have been calculated and found that holes are much anisotropic and heavier than the electrons in agreement with experimental findings. The typical errors in calculated band gaps and related parameters originate from strong Coulomb correlations, which are found to be highly significant in ZnO. The LDA+U approach is found to correct the strong correlation of the Zn-3d electrons, and thus improves the agreement with the experimentally established location of the Zn-3d levels. Consequently, it increases significantly the parameters underestimated in the pure LDA calculations.

From partial density of states, charge density distribution, charge transfer, electron localization function, crystal orbital Hamilton population and Mulliken population analyses it is concluded that the interaction between Li and AlH$_6$ in Li$_3$AlH$_6$ is ionic as earlier advocated. Based on charge density distribution, electron localization function, and density of states analyses we earlier suggested that the interaction between Al and H is largely of the covalent type. However, the additional analyses indicate that the interaction between Al and H in the AlH$_6$ structural sub-units is of a mixed covalent ionic (iono-covalent) character.

Neutron diffraction measurement combined with total energy calculations show that spin-glass behavior with short-range antiferromagnetic interactions rules in CaRuO$_3$. The substitution of Sr by Ca in SrRuO$_3$ decreases the ferromagnetic interaction and enhances the $G$-type antiferromagnetic interaction; the $G$-AF state is found to stabilize around $x$ = 0.75 consistent with experimental observations. Inclusion of spin-orbit coupling is found to be important in order to arrive at the correct magnetic ground state in ruthenates.

The most extreme value (1.454 Å) ever obtained for metal hydrides occurs for LaPtInH$_{1.333}$. This finding violates the empirical rule for metal hydrides, which states that the minimum H-H separation is 2 Å. Electronic structure, charge density, charge transfer, and electron localization function analyses on $RT$InH$_{1.333}$ show dominant metallic bonding with a non-negligible ionic component between T and H, the H-H interaction beingweakly metallic. The paired, localized, and bosonic nature of the electron distribution at the H siteare polarized towards La and In which reduces the repulsive interaction between negatively charged H atoms. This could explain the unusually short H-H separation in these materials. Also, R-R interactions contribute to shielding of the repulsive interactions between the H atoms.

We present the results of theoretical investigation on the electronic structure, bonding nature and ground state properties of Th$_2$Al and Th$_2$AlH$_4$ using generalized-gradient-corrected first-principles full-potential density-functional calculations. Th$_2$AlH$_4$ has been reported to violate the "2 Årule" of H-H separation in hydrides. From our total energy as well as force-minimization calculations, we found a shortest H-H separation of 1.95 Å in accordance with recent high resolution powder neutron diffraction experiments. When the Th$_2$Al matrix is hydrogenated, the volume expansion is highly anisotropic, which is quite opposite to other hydrides having the same crystal structure. The bonding nature of these materials are analyzed from the density of states, crystal-orbital Hamiltonian population and valence-charge-density analyses. Our calculation predicts different nature of bonding for the H atoms along $a$ and $c$. The strongest bonding in Th$_2$AlH$_4$ is between Th and H along $c$ which form dumb-bell shaped H-Th-H subunits. Due to this strong covalent interaction there is very small amount of electrons present between H atoms along $c$ which makes repulsive interaction between the H atoms smaller and this is the precise reason why the 2 Å rule is violated. The large difference in the interatomic distances between the interstitial region where one can accommodate H in the $ac$ and $ab$ planes along with the strong covalent interaction between Th and H are the main reasons for highly anisotropic volume expansion on hydrogenation of Th$_2$Al.

The oxygen-deficient (double) perovskite YBaMn$_2$O$_5$, containing corner-linked MnO$_5$ square pyramids, is found to exhibit ferrimagnetic ordering in its ground state. In the present work we report generalized-gradient-corrected, relativistic first-principles full-potential density-functional calculations performed on YBaMn$_2$O$_5$ in the nonmagnetic, ferromagnetic and ferrimagnetic states. The charge, orbital and spin orderings are explained with site-, angular momentum- and orbital-projected density of states, charge-density plots, electronic structure and total energy studies. YBaMn$_2$O$_5$ is found to stabilize in a G-type ferrimagnetic state in accordance with experimental results. The experimentally observed insulating behavior appears only when we include ferrimagnetic ordering in our calculation. We observed significant optical anisotropy in this material originating from the combined effect of ferrimagnetic ordering and crystal field splitting. In order to gain knowledge about the presence of different valence states for Mn in YBaMn$_2$O$_5$ we have calculated $K$-edge x-ray absorption near-edge spectra for the Mn and O atoms. The presence of the different valence states for Mn is clearly established from the x-ray absorption near-edge spectra, hyperfine field parameters and the magnetic properties study. Among the experimentally proposed structures, the recently reported description based on $P$4/$nmm$ is found to represent the stable structure.

The electronic structure of the perovskite La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CoO$_3$ has been obtained as a function of Sr substitution and volume from a series of generalized-gradient-corrected, full-potential, spin-density-functional band structure calculations. The energetics of different spin configurations are estimated using the fixed-spin-moment (FSM) method. From the total energy vs spin magnetic moment curve for LaCoO$_3$ the ground state is found to be nonmagnetic with the Co ions in a low-spin (LS) state, a result that is consistent with the experimental observations. Somewhat higher in energy, we find an intermediate-spin (IS) state with spin moment $\sim$1.2 $μ_{B}$/f.u.
From the anomalous temperature dependent susceptibility along with the observation of an IS state we predict metamagnetism in LaCoO$_3$ originating from an LS-to-IS transition. The IS state is found to be metallic and the high-spin (HS) state of LaCoO$_3$ is predicted to be a half-metallic ferromagnet. With increasing temperature, which is simulated by a corresponding change of the lattice parameters we have observed the disappearence of the metamagnetic solution that is associated with the IS state. The FSM calculations on La$_{1-x}$Sr$_x$CoO$_3$ suggest that the hole do** stabilizes the IS state and the calculated magnetic moments are in good agreement with the corresponding experimental values. Our calculations show that the HS state cannot be stabilized by temperature or hole do** since the HS state is significantly higher in energy than the LS or IS state. Hence the spin-state transition in LaCoO$_3$ by temperature/hole do** is from an LS to an IS spin state and the present work rules out the other possibilities reported in the literature.

In order to understand the unexpected superconducting behavior of MgB$_2$ compound we have made electronic structure calculations for MgB$_2$ and closely related systems. Our calculated Debye temperature from the elastic properties indicate that the average phonon frequency is very large in MgB$_2$ compared with other superconducting intermetallics and the exceptionally high $T_c$ in this material can be explained through BCS mechanism only if phonon softening occurs or the phonon modes are highly anisotropic. We identified a doubly-degenerate quasi-two dimensional key-energy band in the vicinity of $E_{F}$ along $Γ$-A direction of BZ which play an important role in deciding the superconducting behavior of this material. Based on this result, we have searched for similar kinds of electronic feature in a series of isoelectronic compounds such as BeB$_2$, CaB$_2$, SrB$_2$, LiBC and MgB$_2$C$_2$ and found that MgB$_2$C$_2$ is one potential material from the superconductivity point of view. There are contradictory experimental results regarding the anisotropy in the elastic properties of MgB$_2$ ranging from isotropic, moderately anisotropic to highly anisotropic. In order to settle this issue we have calculated the single crystal elastic constants for MgB$_2$ by the accurate full-potential method and derived the directional dependent linear compressibility, Young's modulus, shear modulus and relevant elastic properties. We have observed large anisotropy in the elastic properties. Our calculated polarized optical dielectric tensor shows highly anisotropic behavior even though it possesses isotropic transport property. MgB$_2$ possesses a mixed bonding character and this has been verified from density of states, charge density and crystal orbital Hamiltonian population analyses.

The ground state and excited state properties of the perovskite LaMnO$_3$ are calculated based on the generalized-gradient-corrected relativistic full-potential method. The electronic structure, magnetism and energetics of various spin configurations for LaMnO$_3$ in the ideal cubic perovskite structure and the experimentally observed distorted orthorhombic structure are obtained. The excited state properties such as the optical, magneto-optical, x-ray photoemission (XPS), bremsstrahlung isochromat (BIS), x-ray absorption near edge structure (XANES) spectra are calculated and found to be in excellent agreement with available experimental results. The present results suggest that the correlation effect is not significant in LaMnO$_3$ and the presence of ferromagnetic coupling within the $ab$ plane as well as the antiferromagnetic coupling perpendicular to this plane can be explained through the itinerant band picture. As against earlier expectations, our calculations show that the Mn 3$d$ $t_{2g}$ as well as the $e_{g}$ electrons are present in the whole valence band region. In particular significantly large amounts of $t_{2g}$ electrons are present in combination with the $e_{g}$ electrons at the top of the valence band against the common expectation of presence of only pure $e_{g}$ electrons. We have calculated the hyperfine field parameters for the A-type antiferromagnetic and the ferromagnetic phases of LaMnO$_3$ and compared the findings with the available experimental results. The role of the orthorhombic distortion on electronic structure, magnetism and optical anisotropy are analyzed.
