We remind how relationality arises as the core insight of general-relativistic gauge field theories from the articulation of the generalised hole and point-coincidence arguments. Hence, a compelling case for a manifestly relational framework ensues naturally. We propose our formulation for such a framework, based on a significant development of the dressing field method of symmetry reduction.
We first develop a version for the group $\text{Aut}(P)$ of automorphisms of a principal bundle $P$ over a manifold $M$, as it is the most natural and elegant, and as $P$ hosts all the mathematical structures relevant to general-relativistic gauge field theory. Yet, as the standard formulation is local, on $M$, we then develop the relational framework for local field theory. It manifestly implements the generalised point-coincidence argument, whereby the physical field-theoretical degrees of freedoms co-define each other and define, coordinatise, the physical spacetime itself. Applying the framework to General Relativity, we obtain relational Einstein equations, encompassing various notions of "scalar coordinatisation" à la Kretschmann-Komar and Brown-Kuchař.

In this paper we argue that the gauge-fixing conditions typically used to extract the (off-shell) degrees of freedom of the Rarita-Schwinger spinor-vector and gravitino, respectively in rigid supersymmetric field theory and supergravity, are actually instances of the dressing field method of symmetry reduction. Since the latter has a natural relation interpretation, solving the ``gauge-fixing condition" -- or, better, ``dressing functional constraints" -- actually realises the Rarita-Schwinger spinor-vector and the gravitino fields as (non-local) relational variables. To the best of our knowledge, this is the first application of the dressing field method to supersymmetric theories.

The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) is the high-resolution X-ray spectrometer to fly on board the Athena Space Observatory of the European Space Agency (ESA). It is being developed by an international Consortium led by France, involving twelve ESA member states, plus the United States. It is a cryogenic instrument, involving state of the art technology, such as micro-calorimeters, to be read out by low noise electronics. As the instrument was undergoing its system requirement review (in 2022), a life cycle assessment (LCA) was performed to estimate the environmental impacts associated with the development of the sub-systems that were under the responsibility of the X-IFU Consortium. The assessment included the supply, manufacturing and testing of sub systems, as well as involved logistics and manpower. We find that the most significant environmental impacts arise from testing activities, which is related to energy consumption in clean rooms, office work, which is related to energy consumption in office buildings, and instrument manufacturing, which is related to the use of mineral and metal resources. Furthermore, business travels is another area of concern, despite the policy to reduced flying adopted by the Consortium. As the instrument is now being redesigned to fit within the new boundaries set by ESA, the LCA will be updated, with a focus on the hot spots identified in the first iteration. The new configuration, consolidated in 2023, is significantly different from the previously studied version and is marked by an increase of the perimeter of responsibility for the Consortium. This will need to be folded in the updated LCA, kee** the ambition to reduce the environmental footprint of X-IFU, while complying with its stringent requirements in terms of performance and risk management.

We review $F(R,\mathcal{D})$ gravity in the metric-affine framework, where $\mathcal{D}$ is the divergence of the dilation current appearing in the hypermomentum tensor. We assume only linear couplings between the general affine connection and the matter fields (minimal coupling) and break projective invariance to preserve a nonvanishing dilation current. For $F(R,\mathcal{D})$ linear in $\mathcal{D}$ the dilation current dependence in the function $F(R,\mathcal{D})$ does not contribute to the field equations of the theory.
We show that, on the other hand, in more complicated cases (e.g., considering the function $F(R,\mathcal{D})=R+α\mathcal{D}^2$), the $\mathcal{D}$ contribution to the metric field equations is nontrivial and can affect the cosmology of the theory.

In this work, we classify all extended and generalized kinematical Lie algebras that can be obtained by expanding the $\mathfrak{so}\left(2,2\right)$ algebra. We show that the Lie algebra expansion method based on semigroups reproduces not only the original kinematical algebras but also a family of non- and ultra-relativistic algebras. Remarkably, the extended kinematical algebras obtained as sequential expansions of the AdS algebra are characterized by a non-degenerate bilinear invariant form, ensuring the construction of a well-defined Chern-Simons gravity action in three spacetime dimensions. Contrary to the contraction process, the degeneracy of the non-Lorentzian theories is avoided without extending the relativistic algebra but considering a bigger semigroup. Using the properties of the expansion procedure, we show that our construction also applies at the level of the Chern-Simons action.

We consider general torsion components in three-dimensional Einstein-Cartan gravity, providing a geometrical interpretation for matter, and find new solutions of the corresponding equations for the Riemann curvature and torsion. These geometries involve a peculiar interplay between the vector $(β_i)$ and the singlet $(τ)$ irreducible components of the torsion which, under general conditions, feature a formal analogy with the equation for a Beltrami fluid. Interestingly, we find that the local AdS$_3$ geometry is now deformed by effect of the "Beltrami-torsion" $β_i$. Some of these new solutions describe deformations of the BTZ black hole due to the presence of torsion. The latter acts as a geometric flux which, in some cases, removes the causal singularity.

We find an unexpected correspondence between the epidemic trajectory of a transmissible disease in a homogeneous SIR-type model and radial null geodesics in the Schwarzschild spacetime. To assess the operation of the complete readout chain of the X-IFU, a 50 mK test bench based on a kilo-pixel array of microcalorimeters from NASA/GSFC has been developed at IRAP in collaboration with CNES. The Athena X-ray Integral Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer, studied since 2015 for flying in the mid-30s on the Athena space X-ray Observatory, a versatile observatory designed to address the Hot and Energetic Universe science theme, selected in November 2013 by the Survey Science Committee. Based on a large format array of Transition Edge Sensors (TES), it aims to provide spatially resolved X-ray spectroscopy, with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV (up to 7 keV) over an hexagonal field of view of 5 arc minutes (equivalent diameter). The X-IFU entered its System Requirement Review (SRR) in June 2022, at about the same time when ESA called for an overall X-IFU redesign (including the X-IFU cryostat and the cooling chain), due to an unanticipated cost overrun of Athena. In this paper, after illustrating the breakthrough capabilities of the X-IFU, we describe the instrument as presented at its SRR, browsing through all the subsystems and associated requirements. We then show the instrument budgets, with a particular emphasis on the anticipated budgets of some of its key performance parameters. Finally we briefly discuss on the ongoing key technology demonstration activities, the calibration and the activities foreseen in the X-IFU Instrument Science Center, and touch on communication and outreach activities, the consortium organisation, and finally on the life cycle assessment of X-IFU aiming at minimising the environmental footprint, associated with the development of the instrument. Thanks to the studies conducted so far on X-IFU, it is expected that along the design-to-cost exercise requested by ESA, the X-IFU will maintain flagship capabilities in spatially resolved high resolution X-ray spectroscopy, enabling most of the original X-IFU related scientific objectives of the Athena mission to be retained. Motivated by Sen's spacetime prescription for the construction of theories with self-dual field strengths, we present a rigid superspace Lagrangian describing noninteracting tensor multiplets living on a stack of M5-branes and containing all the physical constraints on the fields, yielding the on-shell matching of the degrees of freedom. The geometric superspace approach adopted here offers a natural realization of superdiffeomorphisms and is particularly well suited for the coupling to supergravity. However, within this formulation the (anti-)self-duality property of the 3-form field strengths is lost when the superspace Lagrangian is trivially restricted to spacetime. We propose two main paths to address this issue: a first-order superspace extension of Sen's spacetime results, which, once trivially restricted to spacetime, yields all the dynamical equations including the (anti-)self-duality constraint on the 3-form field strengths, and a possible way to obtain a full superspace description of the theory, based on integral forms.

We present non- and ultra-relativistic Jackiw-Teitelboim (JT) supergravity as metric BF theories based on the extended Newton-Hooke and extended AdS Carroll superalgebras in two spacetime dimensions, respectively. The extended Newton-Hooke structure, and, in particular, the invariant metric necessary for the BF construction of non-relativistic JT supergravity, is obtained by performing an expansion of the $\mathcal{N}=2$ AdS$_2$ superalgebra. Subsequently, we introduce the extended AdS$_2$ Carroll superalgebra, and the associated invariant metric, as a suitable redefinition of the extended Newton-Hooke superalgebra. The map** involved can be seen as the supersymmetric extension of the duality existing at the purely bosonic level between the extended Newton-Hooke algebra with (positive) negative cosmological constant and the extended (A)dS Carroll algebra in two dimensions. Finally, we provide the Carrollian JT supergravity action in the BF formalism. Moreover, we show that both the non-relativistic and the ultra-relativistic theories presented can also be obtained by direct expansion of $\mathcal{N}=2$ JT supergravity.

We review the geometric superspace approach to the boundary problem in supergravity, retracing the geometric construction of four-dimensional supergravity Lagrangians in the presence of a non-trivial boundary of spacetime. We first focus on pure $\mathcal{N}=1$ and $\mathcal{N}=2$ theories with negative cosmological constant. Here, the supersymmetry invariance of the action requires the addition of topological (boundary) contributions which generalize at the supersymmetric level the Euler-Gauss-Bonnet term. Moreover, one finds that the boundary values of the super field-strengths are dynamically fixed to constant values, corresponding to the vanishing of the $\mathrm{OSp}(\mathcal{N}|4)$-covariant supercurvatures at the boundary. We then consider the case of vanishing cosmological constant where, in the presence of a non-trivial boundary, the inclusion of boundary terms involving additional fields, which behave as auxiliary fields for the bulk theory, allows to restore supersymmetry. In all the cases listed above, the full, supersymmetric Lagrangian can be recast in a MacDowell-Mansouri(-like) form. We then report on the application of the results to specific problems regarding cases where the boundary is located asymptotically, relevant for a holographic analysis.

We investigate the cosmological aspects of the most general parity preserving Metric-Affine Gravity theory quadratic in torsion and non-metricity in the presence of a cosmological hyperfluid. The equations of motion are obtained by varying the action with respect to the metric and the independent affine connection. Subsequently, considering a Friedmann-Lemaître-Robertson-Walker background, we derive the most general form of the modified Friedmann equations for the full quadratic theory. We then focus on a characteristic sub-case involving only two quadratic contributions given in terms of torsion and non-metricity vectors. In this setup, studying the modified Friedmann equations along with the conservation laws of the perfect cosmological hyperfluid, we provide exact solutions both for purely dilation and for purely spin hypermomentum sources. We then discuss the physical consequences of our model and the prominent role of torsion and non-metricity in this cosmological setup.

We develop a three-dimensional $\mathcal{N}=4$ theory of rigid supersymmetry describing the dynamics of a set of hypermultiplets $(Λ^{αα'\dotα'}_I,\,φ^{αA}_I)$ on a curved AdS$_3$ worldvolume background, whose supersymmetry is captured by the supergroup ${\rm D}^2(2,1;\, \boldsymbolα)$. To unveil some remarkable features of this model, we perform two twists, involving the SL$(2,\mathbb R)$ factors of the theory. After the first twist, our spacetime Lagrangian exhibits a Chern-Simons term associated with an odd one-form field, together with a fermionic "gauge-fixing'', in the spirit of the Rozansky-Witten model. The second twist allows to interpret the ${\rm D}^2(2,1;\, \boldsymbolα)$ setup as a framework capable of describing massive Dirac particles. In particular, this yields a generalisation of the Alvarez-Valenzuela-Zanelli model of ''unconventional supersymmetry''. We comment on specific values of the combination $α+1$, which in our model is related to a sort of gauging in the absence of dynamical gauge fields.

In this work, we present the three-dimensional Maxwell Carroll gravity by considering the ultra-relativistic limit of the Maxwell Chern-Simons gravity theory defined in three spacetime dimensions. We show that an extension of the Maxwellian Carroll symmetry is necessary in order for the invariant tensor of the ultra-relativistic Maxwellian algebra to be non-degenerate. Consequently, we discuss the origin of the aforementioned algebra and theory as a flat limit. We show that the theoretical setup with cosmological constant yielding the extended Maxwellian Carroll Chern-Simons gravity in the vanishing cosmological constant limit is based on an enlarged extended version of the Carroll symmetry. Indeed, the latter exhibits a non-degenerate invariant tensor allowing the proper construction of a Chern-Simons gravity theory which reproduces the extended Maxwellian Carroll gravity in the flat limit.

We present a test platform for the Athena X-IFU detection chain, which will serve as the first demonstration of the representative end-to-end detection and readout chain for the X-IFU, using prototypes of the future flight electronics and currently available subsystems. This test bench, housed in a commercial two-stage ADR cryostat, includes a focal plane array placed at the 50 mK cold stage of the ADR with a kilopixel array of transition-edge sensor microcalorimeter spectrometers and associated cold readout electronics. Prototype room temperature electronics for the X-IFU provide the readout, and will evolve over time to become more representative of the X-IFU mission baseline. The test bench yields critical feedback on subsystem designs and interfaces, in particular the warm readout electronics, and will provide an in-house detection system for continued testing and development of the warm readout electronics and for the validation of X-ray calibration sources. In this paper, we describe the test bench subsystems and design, characterization of the cryostat, and current status of the project.

We present a gauge theory of the conformal group in four spacetime dimensions with a non-vanishing torsion. In particular, we allow for a completely antisymmetric torsion, equivalent by Hodge duality to an axial vector whose presence does not spoil the conformal invariance of the theory, in contrast with claims of antecedent literature. The requirement of conformal invariance implies a differential condition (in particular, a Killing equation) on the aforementioned axial vector which leads to a Maxwell-like equation in a four-dimensional curved background. We also give some preliminary results in the context of $\mathcal{N}=1$ four-dimensional conformal supergravity in the geometric approach, showing that if we only allow for the constraint of vanishing supertorsion all the other constraints imposed in the spacetime approach are a consequence of the closure of the Bianchi identities in superspace. This paves the way towards a future complete investigation of the conformal supergravity using the Bianchi identities in the presence a non-vanishing (super)torsion.

Radiofrequency emission in the 0.4 - 3 GHz range from FTU plasmas in presence of runaway electrons (RE) has been measured with unprecedentedly high time resolution. Rapid emission bursts associated with enhanced RE pitch angle scattering reveal kinetic instabilities affecting evolution of the RE population from the buildup phase. Such measurements also provide a sensitive monitor for instabilities during early RE formation. The leading edge of radio bursts is much shorter than interleaving periods of low emission; spectral broadening during growth indicates nonlinear wave coupling as an explanation for the observed intermittency. Radiofrequency emission disappears at the beginning of post-disruption RE plateaus, and subsequently reappears in the shape of very intense bursts accompanied by strong rises of suprathermal electron cyclotron emission.

We develop in detail the holographic framework for an $\mathcal{N}=2$ pure AdS supergravity model in four dimensions, including all the contributions from the fermionic fields and adopting the Fefferman-Graham parametrization. We work in the first order formalism, where the full superconformal structure can be kept manifest in principle, even if only a part of it is realized as a symmetry on the boundary, while the remainder has a non-linear realization. Our study generalizes the results presented in antecedent literature and includes a general discussion of the gauge-fixing conditions on the bulk fields which yield the asymptotic symmetries at the boundary. We construct the corresponding superconformal currents and show that they satisfy the related Ward identities when the bulk equations of motion are imposed.
Consistency of the holographic setup requires the super-AdS curvatures to vanish at the boundary. This determines, in particular, the expression of the super-Schouten tensor of the boundary theory, which generalizes the purely bosonic Schouten tensor of standard gravity by including gravitini bilinears. The same applies to the superpartner of the super-Schouten tensor, the conformino. Furthermore, the vanishing of the supertorsion poses general constraints on the sources of the three-dimensional boundary conformal field theory and requires that the super-Schouten tensor is endowed with an antisymmetric part proportional to a gravitino-squared term.

In this work we present an alternative method to construct diverse non-relativistic Chern-Simons supergravity theories in three spacetime dimensions. To this end, we apply the Lie algebra expansion method based on semigroups to a supersymmetric extension of the Nappi-Witten algebra. Two different families of non-relativistic superalgebras are obtained, corresponding to generalizations of the extended Bargmann superalgebra and extended Newton-Hooke superalgebra, respectively. The expansion method considered here allows to obtain known and new non-relativistic supergravity models in a systematic way. In particular, it immediately provides an invariant tensor for the expanded superalgebra, which is essential to construct the corresponding Chern-Simons supergravity action. We show that the extended Bargmann supergravity and its Maxwellian generalization appear as particular subcases of a generalized extended Bargmann supergravity theory. In addition, we demonstrate that the generalized extended Bargmann and generalized extended Newton-Hooke supergravity families are related through a contraction process.

We study a parity violating Metric-Affine gravitational theory given by the Einstein-Hilbert action plus the so-called Holst term in vacuum. We find out that for a certain value of the Barbero-Immirzi parameter the total action possesses a remarkable invariance under particular transformations of the affine connection. We prove that in all cases, with appropriate gauge choices, the connection reduces to the Levi-Civita one and that the theory turns out to be equivalent to general relativity in vacuum. Subsequently, we generalize our discussion and analyze the case of Metric-Affine $f(R)$ gravity plus the Holst term. In particular, we show that for $f'(R) \neq \text{constant}$ the theory results to be on-shell equivalent to a metric-compatible torsionless Scalar-Tensor model. Matter coupling of the aforementioned models is also discussed, together with explicit examples and applications.

Although involving nonmetricity, the Schrödinger connection preserves the length of vectors under parallel transport, and appears thus to be more physical than the one proposed by Weyl. By considering solutions with constant scalar curvature, we obtain a self-duality relation for the nonmetricity vector which implies a Proca equation that may also be interpreted in terms of inhomogeneous Maxwell equations emerging from affine geometry.

A longstanding open problem in mathematical physics has been that of finding an action principle for the Einstein-Weyl (EW) equations. In this paper, we present for the first time such an action principle in three dimensions in which the Weyl vector is not exact. More precisely, our model contains, in addition to the Weyl nonmetricity, a traceless part. If the latter is (consistently) set to zero, the equations of motion boil down to the EW equations. In particular, we consider a metric affine $f(R)$ gravity action plus additional terms involving Lagrange multipliers and gravitational Chern-Simons contributions. In our framework, the metric and the connection are considered as independent objects, and no a priori assumptions on the nonmetricity and the torsion of the connection are made. The dynamics of the Weyl vector turns out to be governed by a special case of the generalized monopole equation, which represents a conformal self-duality condition in three dimensions.

Manifolds endowed with torsion and nonmetricity are interesting both from the physical and the mathematical points of view. In this paper, we generalize some results presented in the literature. We study Einstein manifolds (i.e., manifolds whose symmetrized Ricci tensor is proportional to the metric) in d dimensions with nonvanishing torsion that has both a trace and a traceless part, and analyze invariance under extended conformal transformations of the corresponding field equations. Then, we compare our results to the case of Einstein manifolds with zero torsion and nonvanishing nonmetricity, where the latter is given in terms of the Weyl vector (Einstein-Weyl spaces). We find that the trace part of the torsion can alternatively be interpreted as the trace part of the nonmetricity. The analysis is subsequently extended to Einstein spaces with both torsion and nonmetricity, where we also discuss the general setting in which the nonmetricity tensor has both a trace and a traceless part. Moreover, we consider and investigate actions involving scalar curvatures obtained from torsionful or nonmetric connections, analyzing their relations with other gravitational theories that appeared previously in the literature. In particular, we show that the Einstein-Cartan action and the scale invariant gravity (also known as conformal gravity) action describe the same dynamics. Then, we consider the Einstein-Hilbert action coupled to a three-form field strength and show that its equations of motion imply that the manifold is Einstein with totally antisymmetric torsion.

A new supersymmetrization of the so-called AdS-Lorentz algebra is presented. It involves two fermionic generators and is obtained by performing an abelian semigroup expansion of the superalgebra osp(4|1). The peculiar properties of the aforesaid expansion method are then exploited to construct a D=4 supergravity action involving a generalized supersymmetric cosmological term in a geometric way, only from the curvatures of the novel superalgebra. The action obtained with this procedure is a MacDowell-Mansouri like action. Gauge invariance and supersymmetry of the action are also analyzed.

The X-ray Integral Field Unit (X-IFU) is the high resolution X-ray spectrometer of the ESA Athena X-ray observatory. Over a field of view of 5' equivalent diameter, it will deliver X-ray spectra from 0.2 to 12 keV with a spectral resolution of 2.5 eV up to 7 keV on ~5 arcsecond pixels. The X-IFU is based on a large format array of super-conducting molybdenum-gold Transition Edge Sensors cooled at about 90 mK, each coupled with an absorber made of gold and bismuth with a pitch of 249 microns. A cryogenic anti-coincidence detector located underneath the prime TES array enables the non X-ray background to be reduced. A bath temperature of about 50 mK is obtained by a series of mechanical coolers combining 15K Pulse Tubes, 4K and 2K Joule-Thomson coolers which pre-cool a sub Kelvin cooler made of a 3He sorption cooler coupled with an Adiabatic Demagnetization Refrigerator. Frequency domain multiplexing enables to read out 40 pixels in one single channel. A photon interacting with an absorber leads to a current pulse, amplified by the readout electronics and whose shape is reconstructed on board to recover its energy with high accuracy. The defocusing capability offered by the Athena movable mirror assembly enables the X-IFU to observe the brightest X-ray sources of the sky (up to Crab-like intensities) by spreading the telescope point spread function over hundreds of pixels. Thus the X-IFU delivers low pile-up, high throughput (>50%), and typically 10 eV spectral resolution at 1 Crab intensities, i.e. a factor of 10 or more better than Silicon based X-ray detectors. In this paper, the current X-IFU baseline is presented, together with an assessment of its anticipated performance in terms of spectral resolution, background, and count rate capability. The X-IFU baseline configuration will be subject to a preliminary requirement review that is scheduled at the end of 2018.

The purpose of this paper is to explore the supersymmetry invariance of a particular supergravity theory, which we refer to as D=4 generalized AdS-Lorentz deformed supergravity, in the presence of a non-trivial boundary. In particular, we show that the so-called generalized minimal AdS-Lorentz superalgebra can be interpreted as a peculiar torsion deformation of osp(4|1), and we present the construction of a bulk Lagrangian based on the aforementioned generalized AdS-Lorentz superalgebra. In the presence of a non-trivial boundary of space-time, that is when the boundary is not thought of as set at infinity, the fields do not asymptotically vanish, and this has some consequences on the invariances of the theory, in particular on supersymmetry invariance. In this work, we adopt the so-called rheonomic (geometric) approach in superspace and show that a supersymmetric extension of a Gauss-Bonnet like term is required in order to restore the supersymmetry invariance of the theory. The action we end up with can be recast as a MacDowell-Mansouri type action, namely as a sum of quadratic terms in the generalized AdS-Lorentz covariant super field-strengths.

The purpose of my PhD thesis is to investigate different group theoretical and geometrical aspects of supergravity theories. To this aim, several research topics are explored: On one side, the construction of supergravity models in diverse space-time dimensions, including the study of boundary contributions, and the disclosure of the hidden gauge structure of these theories; on the other side, the analysis of the algebraic links among different superalgebras related to supergravity theories.
In the first three chapters, we give a general introduction and furnish the theoretical background necessary for a clearer understanding of the thesis. We then move to the original results of my PhD research activity: We start from the development of the so called $AdS$-Lorentz supergravity in $D=4$ by adopting the so called rheonomic approach and discuss on boundary contributions to the theory. Subsequently, we focus on the analysis of the hidden gauge structure of supersymmetric Free Differential Algebras. More precisely, we concentrate on the hidden superalgebras underlying $D=11$ and $D=7$ supergravities, exploring the symmetries hidden in the theories and the physical role of the nilpotent fermionic generators naturally appearing in the aforementioned superalgebras. After that, we move to the pure algebraic and group theoretical description of (super)algebras, focusing on new analytic formulations of the so called $S$-expansion method. The final chapter contains the summary of the results of my doctoral studies presented in the thesis and possible future developments. In the Appendices, we collect notation, useful formulas, and detailed calculations.

The purpose of this paper is to show that the so-called Maxwell superalgebra in four dimensions, which naturally involves the presence of a nilpotent fermionic generator, can be interpreted as a hidden superalgebra underlying N = 1, D=4 supergravity extended to include a 2-form gauge potential associated to a 2-index antisymmetric tensor. In this scenario, the theory is appropriately discussed in the context of Free Differential Algebras (an extension of the Maurer-Cartan equations to involve higher-degree differential forms). The study is then extended to the Free Differential Algebra describing D=11 supergravity, showing that, also in this case, there exists a super-Maxwell algebra underlying the theory.
The same extra spinors dual to the nilpotent fermionic generators whose presence is crucial for writing a supersymmetric extension of the Maxwell algebras, both in the D=4 and in the D=11 case, turn out to be fundamental ingredients also to reproduce the D=4 and D=11 Free Differential Algebras on ordinary superspace, whose basis is given by the supervielbein. The analysis of the gauge structure of the supersymmetric Free Differential Algebras is carried on taking into account the gauge transformations from the hidden supergroup-manifold associated with the Maxwell superalgebras.

In this paper we clarify the relations occurring among the osp(1|32) algebra, the M-algebra and the hidden superalgebra underlying the Free Differential Algebra of D=11 supergravity (to which we will refer as DF-algebra) that was introduced in the literature by D'Auria and Fré in 1981 and is actually a (Lorentz valued) central extension of the M-algebra including a nilpotent spinor generator, Q'. We focus in particular on the 4-form cohomology in 11D superspace of the supergravity theory, strictly related to the presence in the theory of a 3-form $A^{(3)}$. Once formulated in terms of its hidden superalgebra of 1-forms, we find that $A^{(3)}$ can be decomposed into the sum of two parts having different group-theoretical meaning: One of them allows to reproduce the FDA of the 11D Supergravity due to non-trivial contributions to the 4-form cohomology in superspace, while the second one does not contribute to the 4-form cohomology, being a closed 3-form in the vacuum, defining however a one parameter family of trilinear forms invariant under a symmetry algebra related to osp(1|32) by redefining the spin connection and adding a new Maurer-Cartan equation. We further discuss about the crucial role played by the 1-form spinor $η$ (dual to the nilpotent generator Q') for the 4-form cohomology of the eleven dimensional theory on superspace.

In this work, we expand the hidden $AdS$-Lorentz superalgebra underlying $D=4$ supergravity, reaching a (hidden) Maxwell superalgebra. The latter can be viewed as an extension involving cosmological constant of the superalgebra underlying $D=4$ supergravity in flat spacetime. We write the Maurer-Cartan equations in this context and we find some interesting extensions of the antisymmetric $3$-form $A^{(3)}$ appearing in the Free Differential Algebra in Minkowski space. The structure of Free Differential Algebras is obtained by considering the zero curvature equations. We write the parametrization of $A^{(3)}$ in terms of $1$-forms and we rend the topological features of its extensions manifest. We interestingly find out that the structure of these extensions, and consequently the structure of the corresponding boundary contribution $dA^{(3)}$, strongly depends on the form of the extra fermionic generator appearing in the hidden Maxwell superalgebra. The model we develop in this work is defined in an enlarged superspace with respect to the ordinary one, and the extra bosonic and fermionic $1$-forms required for the closure of the hidden Maxwell superalgebra must be considered as physical fields in this enlarged superspace.
