We report direct measurements of spatially resolved stress at the boundary of a shear thickening cornstarch suspension revealing persistent regions of high local stress propagating in the flow direction at the speed of the top boundary. The persistence of these propagating fronts enables precise measurements of their structure, including the profile of boundary stress measured by Boundary Stress Microscopy (BSM) and the non-affine velocity of particles at the bottom boundary of the suspension measured by particle image velocimetry (PIV). In addition, we directly measure the relative flow between the particle phase and the suspending fluid (fluid migration) and find the migration is highly localized to the fronts and changes direction across the front, indicating that the fronts are composed of a localized region of high dilatant pressure and low particle concentration. The magnitude of the flow indicates that the pore pressure difference driving the fluid migration is comparable to the critical shear stress for the onset of shear thickening. The propagating fronts fully account for the increase in viscosity with applied stress reported by the rheometer and are consistent with the existence of a stable jammed region in contact with one boundary of the system that generates a propagating network of percolated frictional contacts spanning the gap between the rheometer plates and producing strong localized dilatant pressure.

A cutting-edge software is presented to tackle the Newton-Euler equations governing the dynamics of granular flows and dense suspensions in Newtonian fluids. In particular, we propose an implementation of a fixed-radius near neighbours search based on an efficient counting sort algorithm with an improved symmetric search. The adopted search method drastically reduces the computational cost and allows an efficient parallelisation even on a single node through the multi-threading paradigm. Emphasis is also given to the memory efficiency of the code since the history of the contacts among particles has to be traced to model the frictional contributions, when dealing with granular flows of rheological interest that consider non-smooth interacting particles. An effective procedure based on an estimate of the maximum number of the smallest particles surrounding the largest one (given the radii distribution) and a sort applied only to the surrounding particles only is implemented, allowing us to effectively tackle the rheology of non-monodispersed particles with high size-ratio in large domains. Finally, we present validations and verification of the numerical procedure, by comparing with previous simulations and experiments, and present new software capabilities.

We report direct measurements of spatially resolved surface stresses of a dense suspension during large amplitude oscillatory shear (LAOS) in the discontinuous shear thickening regime using boundary stress microscopy. Consistent with previous studies, bulk rheology shows a dramatic increase in the complex viscosity above a frequency-dependent critical strain. We find that the viscosity increase is coincident with that appearance of large heterogeneous boundary stresses, indicative of the formation of transient solid-like phases (SLPs) on spatial scales large compared to the particle size. The critical strain for the appearance of SLPs is largely determined by the peak oscillatory stress, which depends on the peak shear rate and the frequency-dependent suspension viscosity. The SLPs dissipate and reform on each cycle, with a spatial pattern that is highly variable at low frequencies but remarkably persistent at the highest frequency measured ($ω= 10$ rad/sec).

Mixed surfactant systems with strongly bound counterions show many interesting phases such as the random mesh phase consisting of a disordered array of defects (water-filled nano-pores in the bilayers). The present study addresses the non-equilibrium phase transition of the random mesh phase under shear to an ordered mesh phase with a high degree of coherence between nano-pores in three-dimension. In-situ small-angle synchrotron X-ray study under different shear stress conditions shows sharp Bragg peaks in the X-ray diffraction, successfully indexed to the rhombohedral lattice with R$\bar{3}$m space group symmetry. The ordered mesh phase shows isomorphic twinning and buckling at higher shear stress. Our experimental studies bring out rich non-equilibrium phase transitions in concentrated cationic surfactant systems with strongly bound counterions hitherto not well-explored and provide motivation for a quantitative understanding.

We report direct measurements of spatially resolved surface stresses over the entire surface of a dense suspension during discontinuous shear thickening (DST) using Boundary Stress Microscopy (BSM) in a parallel-plate rheometer. We find that large fluctuations in the bulk rheological response at the onset of DST are the result of localized transitions to a state with very high stress, consistent with a fully jammed solid that makes direct contact with the shearing boundaries. That jammed solid like phase (SLP) is rapidly fractured, producing two separate SLPs that propagate in opposite directions. By comparing the speed of propagation of the SLPs with the motion of the confining plates, we deduce that one remains in contact with the bottom boundary, and another remains in contact with the top. These regions grow, bifurcate, and eventually interact and decay in a complex manner that depends on the measurement conditions (constant shear rate vs constant stress). In constant applied stress mode, BSM directly reveals dramatic stress fluctuations that are completely missed in standard bulk rheology.

There is now convincing evidence that inter-particle frictional contacts are essential for observing shear-thickening in concentrated suspensions of compact particles. While this has inspired many strategies to tailor the rheology in these systems, in the more general case, viz-a-viz suspensions of anisotropic particles, the mechanism of shear-thickening remains unclear. Here through simultaneous measurements of the bulk viscosity and the first Normal stress difference, we show that strong shear thickening in suspensions of colloidal rods is accompanied by large positive normal stresses, indicating the formation of a system-spanning frictional contact network. We also find that flow in the shear-thickening regime is unsteady and shows a rather rich time-dependence. By carrying out single particle-resolved confocal rheology measurements, we provide compelling evidence that this rheological chaos arises from a strong coupling between the imposed flow and particle orientational order. Building on these observations, we designed colloidal rods with temperature-tunable tribological properties and demonstrate the feasibility of achieving in-situ control over suspension rheology. These findings show that the interplay between orientational order and frictional interactions plays a critical role in the shear thickening of dense suspensions of colloidal rods.

We compute the one-loop effective actions using two methods: perturbative heat kernel techniques and full $ζ$-function regularization. We find that the result of the perturbative heat kernel method matches the field theory prediction at the appropriate order while the $ζ$-function approach seems to lead to a disagreement. We explore various issues that might be responsible for this state of affairs.

We study the zeta-function regularization of functional determinants of Laplace and Dirac-type operators in two-dimensional Euclidean $AdS_2$ space. More specifically, we consider the ratio of determinants between an operator in the presence of background fields with circular symmetry and the free operator in which the background fields are absent. By Fourier-transforming the angular dependence, one obtains an infinite number of one-dimensional radial operators, the determinants of which are easy to compute. The summation over modes is then treated with care so as to guarantee that the result coincides with the two-dimensional zeta-function formalism. The method relies on some well-known techniques to compute functional determinants using contour integrals and the construction of the Jost function from scattering theory. Our work generalizes some known results in flat space. The extension to conformal $AdS_2$ geometries is also considered. We provide two examples, one bosonic and one fermionic, borrowed from the spectrum of fluctuations of the holographic $\frac{1}{4}$-BPS latitude Wilson loop.

We holographically compute the renormalized off-shell quantum effective action in the twisted ABJM theory as a function of the supersymmetric fermion masses and the arbitrary vacuum expectation values of the dimension one scalar bilinear operators and show that extremizing the effective action with respect to the vacuum expectation values of the dimension one scalar bilinears is equivalent to the attractor mechanism in the bulk. In fact, we show that the holographic quantum effective action coincides with the entropy functional and, therefore, its value at the extremum reproduces the black hole entropy.

We numerically study the index beyond the large-$N$ limit and provide evidence that it contains a subleading logarithmic term of the form $-1/2\log N$. On the holographic side, this term naturally arises from a one-loop computation. However, we find that the contribution coming from the near horizon states does not reproduce the field theory answer. We give some possible reasons for this apparent discrepancy.

The mechanical response of solid particles dispersed in a Newtonian fluid exhibits a wide range of nonlinear phenomena including a dramatic increase in the viscosity \cite{1-3} with increasing stress. If the volume fraction of the solid phase is moderately high, the suspension will undergo continuous shear thickening (CST), where the suspension viscosity increases smoothly with applied shear stress; at still higher volume fractions the suspension can display discontinuous shear thickening (DST), where the viscosity changes abruptly over several orders of magnitude upon increasing applied stress. Proposed models to explain this phenomenon are based in two distinct types of particle interactions, hydrodynamic\cite{2,4,5} and frictional\cite{6-10}. In both cases, the increase in the bulk viscosity is attributed to some form of localized clustering\cite{11,12}. However, the physical properties and dynamical behavior of these heterogeneities remains unclear. Here we show that continuous shear thickening originates from dynamic localized well defined regions of particles with a high viscosity that increases rapidly with concentration. Furthermore, we find that the spatial extent of these regions is largely determined by the distance between the shearing surfaces. Our results demonstrate that continuous shear thickening arises from increasingly frequent localized discontinuous transitions between coexisting low and high viscosity Newtonian fluid phases. Our results provide a critical physical link between the microscopic dynamical processes that determine particle interactions and bulk rheological response of shear thickened fluids.

In particular, D2 and D6 branes with electric flux play a central role as potential dual to totally symmetric and totally antisymmetric representations, respectively. We compute the spectra of excitations of these brane configurations in both, the bosonic and fermionic sectors. We highlight a number of aspects that distinguish these configurations from their D3 and D5 cousins including new peculiar mixing terms in the fluctuations.
