Photonic quantum technologies promise to repeat the success of integrated nanophotonic circuits in non-classical applications. Using linear optical elements, quantum optical computations can be performed with integrated optical circuits and thus allow for overcoming existing limitations in terms of scalability. Besides passive optical devices for realizing photonic quantum gates, active elements such as single photon sources and single photon detectors are essential ingredients for future optical quantum circuits. Material systems which allow for the monolithic integration of all components are particularly attractive, including III-V semiconductors, silicon and also diamond. Here we demonstrate nanophotonic integrated circuits made from high quality polycrystalline diamond thin films in combination with on-chip single photon detectors. Using superconducting nanowires coupled evanescently to travelling waves we achieve high detection efficiencies up to 66 % combined with low dark count rates and timing resolution of 190 ps. Our devices are fully scalable and hold promise for functional diamond photonic quantum devices.

We consider an inhomogeneous model and independently an anisotropic model of primordial power spectrum in order to describe the observed hemispherical anisotropy in Cosmic Microwave Background Radiation. This anisotropy can be parametrized in terms of the dipole modulation model of the temperature field. Both the models lead to correlations between spherical harmonic coefficients corresponding to multipoles, l and l \pm 1. We obtain the model parameters by making a fit to TT correlations in CMBR data. Using these parameters we predict the signature of our models for correlations among different multipoles for the case of the TE and EE modes. These predictions can be used to test whether the observed hemispherical anisotropy can be correctly described in terms of a primordial power spectrum. Furthermore these may also allow us to distinguish between an inhomogeneous and an anisotropic model.

Motivated by experiments on ultracold atoms which have realized the Haldane model for a Chern insulator, we consider its strongly correlated Mott limit with spin-$1/2$ fermions. We find that slave rotor mean field theory yields gapped or gapless chiral spin liquid Mott insulators. To study competing magnetic orders, we consider the strong coupling effective spin Hamiltonian which includes chiral three-spin exchange. We obtain its classical phase diagram, uncovering various chiral magnetic orders including tetrahedral, cone, and noncoplanar spiral states which can compete with putative chiral quantum spin liquids. We study the effect of thermal fluctuations on these states, identifying crossovers in the spin chirality, and phase transitions associated with lattice symmetry breaking. We also discuss analogous effective spin Hamiltonians for correlated spin-$1/2$ bosons. Finally, we point out possible experimental implications of our results for cold atom experiments.

The hemispherical anisotropy can be parameterized in terms of the dipole modulation model. This model leads to correlations between spherical harmonic coefficients corresponding to multipoles, l and l+1. We extract the $l$ dependence of the dipole modulation amplitude, A, by making a fit to the WMAP and PLANCK CMBR data. We propose an inhomogeneous power spectrum model and show that it also leads to correlations between multipoles, l and l+1. The model parameters are determined by making a fit to the data. The spectral index of the inhomogeneous power spectrum is found to be consistent with zero.

Diamond offers unique material advantages for the realization of micro- and nanomechanical resonators due to its high Young's modulus, compatibility with harsh environments and superior thermal properties. At the same time, the wide electronic bandgap of 5.45eV makes diamond a suitable material for integrated optics because of broadband transparency and the absence of free-carrier absorption commonly encountered in silicon photonics. Here we take advantage of both to engineer full-scale optomechanical circuits in diamond thin films. We show that polycrystalline diamond films fabricated by chemical vapour deposition provide a convenient waferscale substrate for the realization of high quality nanophotonic devices. Using free-standing nanomechanical resonators embedded in on-chip Mach-Zehnder interferometers, we demonstrate efficient optomechanical transduction via gradient optical forces. Fabricated diamond resonators reproducibly show high mechanical quality factors up to 11,200. Our low cost, wideband, carrier-free photonic circuits hold promise for all-optical sensing and optomechanical signal processing at ultra-high frequencies.

DNA copy number aberrations (CNAs) can be found in the majority of cancer genomes, and are crucial for understanding the potential mechanisms underlying tumor initiation and progression. Since the first release in 2001, the Progenetix project (http://www.progenetix.org) has provided a reference resource dedicated to provide the most comprehensive collection of genome-wide CNA profiles. Reflecting the application of comparative genomic hybridization (CGH) techniques to tens of thousands of cancer genomes, over the past 12 years our data curation efforts have resulted in a more than 60-fold increase in the number of cancer samples presented through Progenetix. In addition, new data exploration tools and visualization options have been added. In particular, the gene specific CNA frequency analysis should facilitate the assignment of cancer genes to related cancer types. Additionally, the new user file processing interface allows users to take advantage of the online tools, including various data representation options for proprietary data pre-publication. In this update article, we report recent improvements of the database in terms of content, user interface and online tools.

We find that most of the spectral weight is contained in a coherent attractive and a metastable repulsive polaron branch. We show that the qualitative behavior of the Bose polaron is well described by a non-selfconsistent T-matrix approximation by comparing analytical results to numerical data obtained from a fully selfconsistent T-matrix approach. The latter takes into account an infinite number of bosons excited from the condensate.

The dipole amplitude and direction also agrees, within errors, with earlier results based on hemispherical analysis in multipole space. We study several anisotropic inflationary models and their implications for the observed violation of statistical isotropy in the CMBR data. In two of these models the anisotropy decays very quickly during the inflationary phase of expansion. We explicitly show that these models lead to violation of isotropy only for low l CMBR modes. Our primary aim is to fit the observed alignment of l=2,3 multipoles to the theoretical models. We use two measures, based on the power tensor, which contains information about the alignment of each multipole, to quantify the anisotropy in data. One of the measures uses the dispersion in eigenvalues of the power tensor. We also define another measure which tests the overall correlation between two different multipoles. We perturbatively compute these measures of anisotropy and fix the theoretical parameters by making a best fit to l=2,3 multipoles. We show that some of the models studied are able to consistently explain the observed violation of statistical isotropy.

It is shown that the Mott insulating and superfluid phases of bosons in an optical lattice may be distinguished by a non-local 'parity order parameter' which is directly accessible via single site resolution imaging. In one dimension, the lattice Bose model is dual to a classical interface roughening problem. We use known exact results from the latter to prove that the parity order parameter exhibits long range order in the Mott insulating phase, consistent with recent experiments by Endres et al. [Science 334, 200 (2011)]. In two spatial dimensions, the parity order parameter can be expressed in terms of an equal time Wilson loop of a non-trivial U(1) gauge theory in 2+1 dimensions which exhibits a transition between a Coulomb and a confining phase. The negative logarithm of the parity order parameter obeys a perimeter law in the Mott insulator and is enhanced by a logarithmic factor in the superfluid.

In this paper, we try to probe whether a clean CMB map obtained from the raw satellite data using a cleaning procedure is sufficiently clean. Specifically we study if there are any foreground residuals still present in the cleaned data using a cross-correlation statistic. Residual contamination is expected to be present, primarily, in the galactic plane due to the high emission from our own galaxy. A foreground mask is applied conventionally to avoid biases in the estimated quantities of interest due to foreground leakage. Here, we map foreground residuals, if present, in the unmasked region i.e., outside a CMB analysis mask. Further locally extended foreground-contaminated regions, found eventually, are studied to understand them better. The few contaminated regions thus identified may be used to slightly extend the available masks to make them more stringent.

We provide an exact solution of the Efimov spectrum in ultracold gases within the standard two-channel model for Feshbach resonances. It is shown that the finite range in the Feshbach coupling makes the introduction of an adjustable three-body parameter obsolete. The solution explains the empirical relation between the scattering length a_- where the first Efimov state appears at the atom threshold and the van der Waals length l_vdw for open channel dominated resonances. There is a continuous crossover to the closed channel dominated limit, where the scale in the energy level diagram as a function of the inverse scattering length 1/a is set by the intrinsic length r* associated with the Feshbach coupling. Our results provide a number of predictions for non-universal ratios between energies and scattering lengths that can be tested in future experiments.

The fluctuations of the boundary are due to a new type of surface modes, whose spectrum is similar (but not identical) to classical capillary waves. The corresponding quantum capillary length sets the scale for the penetration of the superfluid into the Mott-insulating regime by the proximity effect and may be on the order of several lattice spacings. It determines the typical magnitude of the interface width due to quantum fluctuations, which may be inferred from single site imaging of ultracold atoms in an optical lattice.

We show that the visibility in interference experiments with Bose-Einstein condensates is directly related to the condensate fraction. The probability distribution of the contrast over many runs of an interference experiment thus gives the full counting statistics of the condensed atom number. For two-dimensional Bose gases, we discuss the universal behavior of the probability distribution in the superfluid regime and provide analytical expressions for the distributions for both homogeneous and harmonically trapped samples. They are non-Gaussian and unimodal with a variance that is directly related to the superfluid density. In general, the visibility is a self-averaging observable only in the presence of long range phase coherence. Close to the transition temperature, the visibility distribution reflects the universal order parameter distribution in the vicinity of the critical point.

We study experimentally and numerically the equilibrium density profiles of a trapped two-dimensional $^{87}$Rb Bose gas, and investigate the equation of state of the homogeneous system using the local density approximation. We find a clear discrepancy between in-situ measurements and Quantum Monte Carlo simulations, which we attribute to a non-linear variation of the optical density of the atomic cloud with its spatial density. However, good agreement between experiment and theory is recovered for the density profiles measured after time-of-flight, taking advantage of their self-similarity in a two-dimensional expansion.

The reliability of the intrinsic wave functions required to study these decay modes has been established in our earlier works by obtaining an overall agreement between the theoretically calculated spectroscopic properties, namely yrast spectra, reduced $B(E2$:$0^{+}\to 2^{+})$ transition probabilities, quadrupole moments $Q(2^{+})$ and gyromagnetic factors $g(2^{+})$ and the available experimental data in the parent and daugther even-even nuclei. In the present work, the required nuclear transition matrix elements are calculated in the Majorana neutrino mass mechanism using the same set of intrinsic wave functions as used to study the two neutrino positron double-$β$ decay modes. Limits on effective light neutrino mass $< m_ν >$ and effective heavy neutrino mass $< M_{N} >$ are extracted from the observed limits on half-lives $T_{1/2}^{0ν}(0^{+}\to 0^{+})$ of $(β^{+}β^{+})_{0ν}$ and $(\varepsilon β^{+})_{0ν}$ modes. We also investigate the effect of quadrupolar correlations vis-a-vis deformation on NTMEs required to study the $(β^{+}β^{+})_{0ν}$ and $(\varepsilon β^{+})_{0ν}$ modes.

The effect of deformation on nuclear transition matrix elements is investigated by varying the strength of quadrupolar correlations in the parent and daughter nuclei independently. The variation of the nuclear transition matrix elements as a function of the difference in deformation parameters of parent and daughter nuclei reveals that in general, the former tend to be maximum for equal deformation and they decrease as the difference in deformation parameters increases, exhibiting a very similar trend for the $(β^{-}β^{-})_{2ν}$ and $(β^{-}β^{-})_{0ν}$ transition matrix elements.

We propose a scheme to generate an Abelian gauge field in an atomic gas using two crossed laser beams. If the internal atomic state follows adiabatically the eigenstates of the atom-laser interaction, Berry's phase gives rise to a vector potential that can nucleate vortices in a Bose gas. The present scheme operates even for a large detuning with respect to the atomic resonance, making it applicable to alkali-metal atoms without significant heating due to spontaneous emission. We test the validity of the adiabatic approximation by integrating the set of coupled Gross-Pitaevskii equations associated with the various internal atomic states, and we show that the steady state of the interacting gas indeed exhibits a vortex lattice, as expected from the adiabatic gauge field.

We propose a semi-classical interpretation of the geometric scalar and vector potentials that arise due to Berry's phase when an atom moves slowly in a light field. Starting from the full quantum Hamiltonian, we turn to a classical description of the atomic centre-of-mass motion while still treating the internal degrees of freedom as quantum variables. We show that the scalar potential can be identified as the kinetic energy of an atomic micro-motion caused by quantum fluctuations of the radiative force, and that the Lorentz-type force appears as a result of the motion-induced perturbation of the internal atomic state. For a specific configuration involving two counter-propagating Gaussian laser beams, we relate the geometric forces to the radiation pressure and dipole forces known from quantum optics. The simple physical pictures provided by the present analysis may help for the design and the implementation of novel geometric forces.

These rules are classified into nine groups depending upon the number of neighboring cells influences the cell under consideration. All the Uniform rules have been found to be rendering multiple copies of a given image depending on the groups to which they belong where as Hybrid rules are also shown to be characterizing the phenomena of zooming in, zooming out, thickening and thinning of a given image. Further, using hybrid CA rules a new searching algorithm is developed called Sweepers algorithm which is found to be applicable to simulate many inter disciplinary research areas like migration of organisms towards a single point destination, Single Attractor and Multiple Attractor Cellular Automata Theory, Pattern Classification and Clustering Problem, Image compression, Encryption and Decryption problems, Density Classification problem etc.

We analyze the results of a recent experiment with bosonic rubidium atoms harmonically confined in a quasi-two-dimensional geometry. In this experiment a well defined critical point was identified, which separates the high-temperature normal state characterized by a single component density distribution, and the low-temperature state characterized by a bimodal density distribution and the emergence of high-contrast interference between independent two-dimensional clouds. We first show that this transition cannot be explained in terms of conventional Bose-Einstein condensation of the trapped ideal Bose gas. Using the local density approximation, we then combine the mean-field (MF) Hartree-Fock theory with the prediction for the Berezinskii-Kosterlitz-Thouless transition in an infinite uniform system. If the gas is treated as a strictly 2D system, the MF predictions for the spatial density profiles significantly deviate from those of a recent Quantum Monte-Carlo (QMC) analysis. However when the residual thermal excitation of the strongly confined degree of freedom is taken into account, an excellent agreement is reached between the MF and the QMC approaches. For the interaction strength corresponding to the experiment, we predict a strong correction to the critical atom number with respect to the ideal gas theory (factor $\sim 2$). A quantitative agreement between theory and experiment is reached concerning the critical atom number if the predicted density profiles are used for temperature calibration.

The dynamical age of the universe depends upon the rate of the expansion of the universe, which explicitly involves the dark energy equation of state parameter $w(z)$. Consequently, the evolution of $w(z)$ has a direct imprint on the age of the universe. We have shown that the dynamical age of the universe as derived from CMB data can be used as an authentic criterion, being independent of the priors like the present value of the Hubble constant $H_{0}$ and the cosmological density parameter $Ω_{M}^{0}$, to constrain the range of admissible values of $w$ for quiessence models and to test the physically viable parametrizations of the equation of state $w(z) $ in kinessence models. An upper bound on variation of dark energy density is derived and a relation between cosmological density parameters and the transition redshift is established.

Typically $7\times 10^9$ atoms per second propagate in a magnetic guide providing a transverse gradient of 800 G/cm, with a temperature $\sim550$ $μ$K, at an initial velocity of 90 cm/s. The atoms are subsequently slowed down to $\sim 60$ cm/s using an upward slope. The relatively high collision rate (5 s$^{-1}$) allows us to start forced evaporative cooling of the beam, leading to a reduction of the beam temperature by a factor of ~4, and a ten-fold increase of the on-axis phase-space density.

Abstract:
Transition charge density (TCD) for $ 0^+\to 2_1^+ $ excitation have been calculated for $\rm ^{70,72,74,76}Ge$ nuclei within microscopic variational framework employing $2p_{3/2}, 1f_{5/2}, 2p_{1/2}$ and $1g_{9/2}$ valence space. The calculated TCDs for different monopole variants of Kuo interaction are compared with available experimental results. Other systematics like reduced transition prob…

The calculated TCDs for different monopole variants of Kuo interaction are compared with available experimental results. Other systematics like reduced transition probabilities B(E2) and static quadrupole moments Q(2) are also presented. It is observed that the transition density study acts as a sensitive probe for discriminating the response of different parts of effective interactions.

In the first step, the reliability of the intrinsic wave functions has been established by obtaining an overall agreement between a number of theoretically calculated spectroscopic properties and the available experimental data for $ ^{94,96}$% Zr$,^{94,96,98,100}$Mo, $^{98,100,104}$Ru, $^{104,110}$Pd and $^{110}$Cd isotopes. Subsequently, the PHFB wave functions of the above mentioned nuclei are employed to calculate the nuclear transition matrix elements $M_{2ν}$ as well as half-lives $T{_{1/2}^{2ν}}$. Further, we have studied the effects of deformation on the $M_{2ν}$.

The two neutrino positron double beta decay of $^{106}$Cd for 0$^{+} \to $ 0$^{+}$ transition has been studied in the Hartree-Fock-Bogoliubov model in conjunction with the summation method. In the first step, the reliability of the intrinsic wave functions of $^{106}$Cd and $^{106}$Pd nuclei has been tested by comparing the theoretically calculated results for yrast spectra, reduced $B(E2$:$0^{+}\to 2^{+})$ transition probabilities, quadrupole moments $Q(2^{+})$ and gyromagnetic factors $g(2^{+})$ with the available experimental data. In the second step, the nuclear transition matrix element $M_{2ν}$ and the half-life $T_{1/2}^{2ν}$ for 0$^{+}\to$ 0$^{+}$ transition have been calculated with these wave functions. Moreover, we have studied the effect of deformation on nuclear transition matrix element M$_{2ν}.$
