Quantum Spin Hall (QSH) insulators represent a quintessential example of a topological phase of matter, characterized by a conducting edge mode within a bulk energy gap. The pursuit of a tunable QSH state stands as a pivotal objective in the development of QSH-based topological devices. In this study, we employ first-principles calculations to identify three strain-tunable QSH insulators based on monolayer MAlGaTe4 (where M represents Mg, Ca, or Sr). These monolayers exhibit dynamic stability, with no imaginary modes detected in their phonon dispersion. Additionally, they possess piezoelectric properties, rendering them amenable to strain-induced tuning. While MgAlGaTe4 is a normal insulator under zero strain, it transitions into the QSH phase when subjected to external strain. Conversely, CaAlGaTe4 and SrAlGaTe4 already exhibit the QSH phase at zero strain. Intriguingly, upon the application of biaxial strain, these two compounds undergo phase transitions, encompassing metallic (M), normal/trivial insulator (NI), and topological insulator (TI) phases, thereby illustrating their strain-tunable electronic and topological properties. (Ca, Sr)AlGaTe4, in particular, undergo M-TI/TI-M transitions under applied strain, while MgAlGaTe4 additionally experiences an M-NI/NI-M transition, signifying it as a material featuring a metal-insulator transition (MIT). Remarkably, the observation of metal-trivial insulator-topological insulator transitions in MgAlGaTe4 introduces it as a unique material platform in which both MIT and topological phase transitions can be controlled through the same physical parameter. Our study thus introduces a novel material platform distinguished by highly strain-tunable electronic and topological properties, offering promising prospects for the development of next-generation, low-power topological devices.

Prediction and discovery of new materials with desired properties are at the forefront of quantum science and technology research. A major bottleneck in this field is the computational resources and time complexity related to finding new materials from ab initio calculations. In this work, an effective and robust deep learning-based model is proposed by incorporating persistent homology and graph neural network which offers an accuracy of 91.4% and an F1 score of 88.5% in classifying topological vs. non-topological materials, outperforming the other state-of-the-art classifier models. The incorporation of the graph neural network encodes the underlying relation between the atoms into the model based on their own crystalline structures and thus proved to be an effective method to represent and process non-euclidean data like molecules with a relatively shallow network. The persistent homology pipeline in the suggested neural network is capable of integrating the atom-specific topological information into the deep learning model, increasing robustness, and gain in performance. It is believed that the presented work will be an efficacious tool for predicting the topological class and therefore enable the high-throughput search for novel materials in this field.

Autistic Spectrum Disorder (ASD) is a neurological disease characterized by difficulties with social interaction, communication, and repetitive activities. While its primary origin lies in genetics, early detection is crucial, and leveraging machine learning offers a promising avenue for a faster and more cost-effective diagnosis. This study employs diverse machine learning methods to identify crucial ASD traits, aiming to enhance and automate the diagnostic process. We study eight state-of-the-art classification models to determine their effectiveness in ASD detection. We evaluate the models using accuracy, precision, recall, specificity, F1-score, area under the curve (AUC), kappa, and log loss metrics to find the best classifier for these binary datasets. Among all the classification models, for the children dataset, the SVM and LR models achieve the highest accuracy of 100% and for the adult dataset, the LR model produces the highest accuracy of 97.14%. Our proposed ANN model provides the highest accuracy of 94.24% for the new combined dataset when hyperparameters are precisely tuned for each model. As almost all classification models achieve high accuracy which utilize true labels, we become interested in delving into five popular clustering algorithms to understand model behavior in scenarios without true labels. We calculate Normalized Mutual Information (NMI), Adjusted Rand Index (ARI), and Silhouette Coefficient (SC) metrics to select the best clustering models. Our evaluation finds that spectral clustering outperforms all other benchmarking clustering models in terms of NMI and ARI metrics while demonstrating comparability to the optimal SC achieved by k-means. The implemented code is available at GitHub.

Analog mixed-signal (AMS) circuit architecture has evolved towards more digital friendly due to technology scaling and demand for higher flexibility/reconfigurability. Meanwhile, the design complexity and cost of AMS circuits has substantially increased due to the necessity of optimizing the circuit sizing, layout, and verification of a complex AMS circuit. On the other hand, machine learning (ML) algorithms have been under exponential growth over the past decade and actively exploited by the electronic design automation (EDA) community. This paper will identify the opportunities and challenges brought about by this trend and overview several emerging AMS design methodologies that are enabled by the recent evolution of AMS circuit architectures and machine learning algorithms. Specifically, we will focus on using neural-network-based surrogate models to expedite the circuit design parameter search and layout iterations. Lastly, we will demonstrate the rapid synthesis of several AMS circuit examples from specification to silicon prototype, with significantly reduced human intervention.
