Bipolar Disorder (BD) is a psychiatric condition diagnosed by repetitive cycles of hypomania and depression. Since diagnosing BD relies on subjective behavioral assessments over a long period, a solid diagnosis based on objective criteria is not straightforward. The current study responded to the described obstacle by proposing a hybrid GAN-CNN model to diagnose BD from 3-D structural MRI Images (sMRI). The novelty of this study stems from diagnosing BD from sMRI samples rather than conventional datasets such as functional MRI (fMRI), electroencephalography (EEG), and behavioral symptoms while removing the data insufficiency usually encountered when dealing with sMRI samples. The impact of various augmentation ratios is also tested using 5-fold cross-validation. Based on the results, this study obtains an accuracy rate of 75.8%, a sensitivity of 60.3%, and a specificity of 82.5%, which are 3-5% higher than prior work while utilizing less than 6% sample counts. Next, it is demonstrated that a 2- D layer-based GAN generator can effectively reproduce complex 3D brain samples, a more straightforward technique than manual image processing. Lastly, the optimum augmentation threshold for the current study using 172 sMRI samples is 50%, showing the applicability of the described method for larger sMRI datasets. In conclusion, it is established that data augmentation using GAN improves the accuracy of the CNN classifier using sMRI samples, thus develo** more reliable decision support systems to assist practitioners in identifying BD patients more reliably and in a shorter period

This document presents the initial scientific case for upgrading the Continuous Electron Beam Accelerator Facility (CEBAF) at Jefferson Lab (JLab) to 22 GeV. It is the result of a community effort, incorporating insights from a series of workshops conducted between March 2022 and April 2023. With a track record of over 25 years in delivering the world's most intense and precise multi-GeV electron beams, CEBAF's potential for a higher energy upgrade presents a unique opportunity for an innovative nuclear physics program, which seamlessly integrates a rich historical background with a promising future. The proposed physics program encompass a diverse range of investigations centered around the nonperturbative dynamics inherent in hadron structure and the exploration of strongly interacting systems. It builds upon the exceptional capabilities of CEBAF in high-luminosity operations, the availability of existing or planned Hall equipment, and recent advancements in accelerator technology. The proposed program cover various scientific topics, including Hadron Spectroscopy, Partonic Structure and Spin, Hadronization and Transverse Momentum, Spatial Structure, Mechanical Properties, Form Factors and Emergent Hadron Mass, Hadron-Quark Transition, and Nuclear Dynamics at Extreme Conditions, as well as QCD Confinement and Fundamental Symmetries. Each topic highlights the key measurements achievable at a 22 GeV CEBAF accelerator. Furthermore, this document outlines the significant physics outcomes and unique aspects of these programs that distinguish them from other existing or planned facilities. In summary, this document provides an exciting rationale for the energy upgrade of CEBAF to 22 GeV, outlining the transformative scientific potential that lies within reach, and the remarkable opportunities it offers for advancing our understanding of hadron physics and related fundamental phenomena.

In this paper, we propose a new macro-micro approach to modeling parking. We first develop a microscopic parking simulation model considering both on- and off-street parking with limited capacity. In the microscopic model, a parking search algorithm is proposed to mimic cruising-for-parking based on the principle of proximity, and a parking-related state tracking algorithm is proposed to acquire an event-based simulated data set. Some key aspects of parking modeling are discussed based on the sim-ulated evidence and theoretical analysis. Results suggest (i) although the low cruising speed reduces the network performance, it does not significantly alter the macroscopic or network fundamental diagram (MFD or NFD) unless the cruising vehicles dominate the traffic stream; (ii) distance to park is not uniquely determined by parking occupancy because factors such as cruising speed and parking dura-tion also contribute; and (iii) multiscale parking occupancy-driven intelligent parking guidance can re-duce distance to park yielding considerable network efficiency gains. Using the microscopic model, we then extend, calibrate, and validate a macroscopic parking dynamics model with an NFD representation. The demonstrated consistency between the macro- and micro-models permits integration of the two for online parking pricing optimization via model predictive control. Numerical experiments highlight the effectiveness of the proposed approach as well as one caveat. That is, when pricing on-street parking, the road network connected to the alternate off-street parking lots must have sufficient capacity to ac-commodate the increased parking demand; otherwise, local congestion may arise that violates the ho-mogeneity assumption underlying the macroscopic model.

Detection and classification of ships based on their silhouette profiles in natural imagery is an important undertaking in computer science. This problem can be viewed from a variety of perspectives, including security, traffic control, and even militarism. Therefore, in each of the aforementioned applications, specific processing is required. In this paper, by applying the "bag of words" (BoW), a new method is presented that its words are the features that are obtained using pre-trained models of deep convolutional networks. , Three VGG models are utilized which provide superior accuracy in identifying objects. The regions of the image that are selected as the initial proposals are derived from a greedy algorithm on the key points generated by the Scale Invariant Feature Transform (SIFT) method. Using the deep features in the BOW method provides a good improvement in the recognition and classification of ships. Eventually, we obtained an accuracy of 91.8% in the classification of the ships which shows the improvement of about 5% compared to previous methods.

To accurately predict the regional spread of Covid-19 infection, this study proposes a novel hybrid model which combines a Long short-term memory (LSTM) artificial recurrent neural network with dynamic behavioral models. Several factors and control strategies affect the virus spread, and the uncertainty arisen from confounding variables underlying the spread of the Covid-19 infection is substantial. The proposed model considers the effect of multiple factors to enhance the accuracy in predicting the number of cases and deaths across the top ten most-affected countries and Australia. The results show that the proposed model closely replicates test data. It not only provides accurate predictions but also estimates the daily behavior of the system under uncertainty. The hybrid model outperforms the LSTM model accounting for limited available data. The parameters of the hybrid models were optimized using a genetic algorithm for each country to improve the prediction power while considering regional properties. Since the proposed model can accurately predict Covid-19 spread under consideration of containment policies, is capable of being used for policy assessment, planning and decision-making.

Mobility as a Service (MaaS), as an emerging concept, is quickly evolving and at the same time irreversibly resha** travellers behaviour by facilitating their accessibility to different transport modes using shared economy concepts. Managing the complex multimodal and intermodal system of quickly emerging MaaS, requires a holistic modelling framework of transport network incorporating all the influential aspects and means involved. In this paper, we mathematically formulate a novel MaaS-based activity travel pattern (ATP) generator to facilitate ridesharing in a system in which drivers and passengers interact by sharing their full activity diary. The proposed formulation extends the definition of MaaS beyond an intermodal trip planner, by incorporating an inclusive set of travel attributes including the choices of activity, activity sequence, departure time, and mode, and the transitions among the modes in ATPs of all participants. Furthermore, this paper introduces a dynamic rideshare-oriented MaaS model in which the conventional rideshare modelling structure is synchronised with the proposed MaaS-based ATP generator in a unified structure. These models explicitly bridge the gaps in the missed-out connection between ATPs planning and rideshare models in the current literature. At last, numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the significant impacts of the MaaS-based planning on the ridesharing systems performance.

In this paper, a novel transport planning model system (TPMS) is formulated which is built on the concepts of supernetworks, multi-modality, integrity and calibration. In the proposed formulation, activity travel pattern (ATP) choice facets including the choices of activity, activity sequence, mode, departure time, and parking location, are all unified into a time-dependent supernetwork. The proposed model accounts for the dynamicity of the network, including time-of-day and congestion effects. These help capturing the interdependencies among all different attributes of a full transport planning system. Moreover, the proposed TPMS explicitly formulates an operating capacitated public transport system. To allow visiting locations multiple times and to alleviate the complexity of the proposed supernetwork, a novel multi-visit vehicle routing problem is proposed which does not enumerate the node and link visits. In order to calibrate the model based on the major travel attributes of the travel survey data, a set of splitting ratios are introduced to distribute trips on the supernetwork. The model uses the splitting ratios to integrate the supernetwork and the traffic assignment model in a unified TPMS structure. At last, numerical examples are provided to demonstrate the advantages of the proposed approach.

In this paper, we contrast parametric and semi-parametric representations of unobserved heterogeneity in hierarchical Bayesian multinomial logit models and leverage these methods to infer distributions of willingness to pay for features of shared automated vehicle (SAV) services. Specifically, we compare the multivariate normal (MVN), finite mixture of normals (F-MON) and Dirichlet process mixture of normals (DP-MON) mixing distributions. The latter promises to be particularly flexible in respect to the shapes it can assume and unlike other semi-parametric approaches does not require that its complexity is fixed prior to estimation. However, its properties relative to simpler mixing distributions are not well understood. In this paper, we evaluate the performance of the MVN, F-MON and DP-MON mixing distributions using simulated data and real data sourced from a stated choice study on preferences for SAV services in New York City. Our analysis shows that the DP-MON mixing distribution provides superior fit to the data and performs at least as well as the competing methods at out-of-sample prediction. The DP-MON mixing distribution also offers substantive behavioural insights into the adoption of SAVs. We find that preferences for in-vehicle travel time by SAV with ride-splitting are strongly polarised. Whereas one third of the sample is willing to pay between 10 and 80 USD/h to avoid sharing a vehicle with strangers, the remainder of the sample is either indifferent to ride-splitting or even desires it. Moreover, we estimate that new technologies such as vehicle automation and electrification are relatively unimportant to travellers. This suggests that travellers may primarily derive indirect, rather than immediate benefits from these new technologies through increases in operational efficiency and lower operating costs.

The literature suggests that autonomous vehicles (AVs) may drastically change the user experience of private automobile travel by allowing users to engage in productive or relaxing activities while travelling. As a consequence, the generalised cost of car travel may decrease, and car users may become less sensitive to travel time. By facilitating private motorised mobility, AVs may eventually impact land use and households' residential location choices. This paper seeks to advance the understanding of the potential impacts of AVs on travel behaviour and land use by investigating stated preferences for combinations of residential locations and travel options for the commute in the context of autonomous automobile travel. Our analysis draws from a stated preference survey, which was completed by 512 commuters from the Sydney metropolitan area in Australia and provides insights into travel time valuations in a long-term decision-making context. For the analysis of the stated choice data, mixed logit models are estimated. Based on the empirical results, no changes in the valuation of travel time due to the advent of AVs should be expected. However, given the hypothetical nature of the stated preference survey, the results may be affected by methodological limitations.

Variational Bayes (VB), a method originating from machine learning, enables fast and scalable estimation of complex probabilistic models. Thus far, applications of VB in discrete choice analysis have been limited to mixed logit models with unobserved inter-individual taste heterogeneity. However, such a model formulation may be too restrictive in panel data settings, since tastes may vary both between individuals as well as across choice tasks encountered by the same individual. In this paper, we derive a VB method for posterior inference in mixed logit models with unobserved inter- and intra-individual heterogeneity. In a simulation study, we benchmark the performance of the proposed VB method against maximum simulated likelihood (MSL) and Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods in terms of parameter recovery, predictive accuracy and computational efficiency. The simulation study shows that VB can be a fast, scalable and accurate alternative to MSL and MCMC estimation, especially in applications in which fast predictions are paramount. VB is observed to be between 2.8 and 17.7 times faster than the two competing methods, while affording comparable or superior accuracy. Besides, the simulation study demonstrates that a parallelised implementation of the MSL estimator with analytical gradients is a viable alternative to MCMC in terms of both estimation accuracy and computational efficiency, as the MSL estimator is observed to be between 0.9 and 2.1 times faster than MCMC.

Variational Bayes (VB) methods have emerged as a fast and computationally-efficient alternative to Markov chain Monte Carlo (MCMC) methods for scalable Bayesian estimation of mixed multinomial logit (MMNL) models. It has been established that VB is substantially faster than MCMC at practically no compromises in predictive accuracy. In this paper, we address two critical gaps concerning the usage and understanding of VB for MMNL. First, extant VB methods are limited to utility specifications involving only individual-specific taste parameters. Second, the finite-sample properties of VB estimators and the relative performance of VB, MCMC and maximum simulated likelihood estimation (MSLE) are not known. To address the former, this study extends several VB methods for MMNL to admit utility specifications including both fixed and random utility parameters. To address the latter, we conduct an extensive simulation-based evaluation to benchmark the extended VB methods against MCMC and MSLE in terms of estimation times, parameter recovery and predictive accuracy. The results suggest that all VB variants with the exception of the ones relying on an alternative variational lower bound constructed with the help of the modified Jensen's inequality perform as well as MCMC and MSLE at prediction and parameter recovery. In particular, VB with nonconjugate variational message passing and the delta-method (VB-NCVMP-Delta) is up to 16 times faster than MCMC and MSLE. Thus, VB-NCVMP-Delta can be an attractive alternative to MCMC and MSLE for fast, scalable and accurate estimation of MMNL models.

Unfortunately, many of these WHSs are in a poor condition due to climatic and environmental impacts; war and tourism pressure, requiring the urgent need for restoration and preservation (Tuan & Navrud, 2007). In this study, we characterise residents from Shiraz city (visitors and non-visitors) willingness to invest in the management of the heritage sites through models for the preservation of heritage and development of tourism as a local resource. The research looks at different categories of heritage sites within Shiraz city, Iran. The measurement instrument is a stated preference referendum task administered state-wide to a sample of 489 respondents, with the payment mechanism defined as a purpose-specific incremental levy of a fixed amount over a set period of years. A Latent Class Binary Logit model, using parametric constraints is used innovatively to deal with any strategic voting such as Yea-sayers and Nay-sayers, as well as revealing the latent heterogeneity among sample members. Results indicate that almost 14% of the sampled population is unwilling to be levied any amount (Nay-sayers) to preserve any heritage sites. Not recognizing the presence of nay-sayers in the data or recognizing them but eliminating them from the estimation will result in biased Willingness to Pay (WTP) results and, consequently, biased policy propositions by authorities. Moreover, it is found that the type of heritage site is a driver of WTP. The results from this study provide insights into the WTP of heritage site visitors and non-visitors with respect to avoiding the impacts of future erosion and destruction and contributing to heritage management and maintenance policies.

We present a mixed multinomial logit (MNL) model, which leverages the truncated stick-breaking process representation of the Dirichlet process as a flexible nonparametric mixing distribution. The proposed model is a Dirichlet process mixture model and accommodates discrete representations of heterogeneity, like a latent class MNL model. Yet, unlike a latent class MNL model, the proposed discrete choice model does not require the analyst to fix the number of mixture components prior to estimation, as the complexity of the discrete mixing distribution is inferred from the evidence. For posterior inference in the proposed Dirichlet process mixture model of discrete choice, we derive an expectation maximisation algorithm. In a simulation study, we demonstrate that the proposed model framework can flexibly capture differently-shaped taste parameter distributions. Furthermore, we empirically validate the model framework in a case study on motorists' route choice preferences and find that the proposed Dirichlet process mixture model of discrete choice outperforms a latent class MNL model and mixed MNL models with common parametric mixing distributions in terms of both in-sample fit and out-of-sample predictive ability. Compared to extant modelling approaches, the proposed discrete choice model substantially abbreviates specification searches, as it relies on less restrictive parametric assumptions and does not require the analyst to specify the complexity of the discrete mixing distribution prior to estimation.
