Abstract:
We report on the first experimental observation of a very strong nonlinear response in crystalline quartz in the terahertz (THz) frequency region through THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). We report on the first experimental observation of a very strong nonlinear response in crystalline quartz in the terahertz (THz) frequency region through THz time-domain spectroscopy (THz-TDS). Theoretical modelling is presented and predicts a Kerr coefficient n2 equal to 5.17*10^-14 m^2 W^-1. The time-domain analysis of the measured data shows that with increasing of the THz peak amplitude, the pulse experiences a larger time delay in the sample. As the THz amplitude increases to values higher than 110 kV cm^-1, the growth rate of the delay decreases, indicating a saturation process. The value of the nonlinear refractive index calculated through the frequency response analysis is estimated to be on the order of 10^-13 m^2 W^-1, which is several orders of magnitude larger than typical values of the nonlinear refractive index of solids in the visible region. Furthermore, a negative fifth-order susceptibility on the order of 10^-30 m^4 V^-4 is measured.

We demonstrate that, even when employing above-band excitation, photons emitted from semiconductor quantum dots can have linewidths that approach their transform-limited values. This is accomplished by using quantum dots embedded in bottom-up photonic nanowires, an approach which mitigates several potential mechanisms that can result in linewidth broadening: (i) only a single quantum dot is present in each device, (ii) dot nucleation proceeds without the formation of a wetting layer, and (iii) the sidewalls of the photonic nanowire are comprised not of etched facets, but of epitaxially grown crystal planes. Using these structures we achieve linewidths of 2x the transform limit, unprecedented for above-band excitation. We also demonstrate a highly nonlinear dependence of the linewidth on both excitation power and temperature which can be described by an independent Boson model that considers both deformation and piezoelectric exciton-phonon coupling. We find that for sufficiently low excitation powers and temperatures, the observed excess broadening is not dominated by phonon dephasing, a surprising result considering the high phonon occupation that occurs with above-band excitation.

Nonlinear absorption can limit the efficiency of nonlinear optical devices. However, it can also be exploited for optical limiting or switching applications. Thus, characterization of nonlinear absorption in photonic devices is imperative. This work used the nonlinear transmittance technique to measure the two-photon absorption coefficients ($α_2$) of AlGaAs waveguides in the strip-loaded, nanowire, and half-core geometries in the wavelength range from $1480$ to $1560~\text{nm}$. The highest $α_2$ values of $2.4$, $2.3$, and $1.1~\text{cm}/\text{GW}$ were measured at $1480~\text{nm}$ for a $0.8$-nm-wide half-core, $0.6$-nm-wide nanowire, and $0.9$-nm-wide strip-loaded waveguides, respectively, with $α_2$ decreasing with increasing wavelength. The free-carrier absorption cross-section was also estimated from the nonlinear transmittance data to be around $2.2\times10^{-16}~\text{cm}^2$ for all three geometries. Our results contribute to a better understanding of the nonlinear absorption in heterostructure waveguides of different cross-sectional geometries. We discuss how the electric field distribution in the different layers of a heterostructure can lead to geometry-dependent effective two-photon absorption coefficients. More specifically, we pinpoint the third-order nonlinear confinement factor as a design parameter to estimate the strength of the effective nonlinear absorption, in addition to tailoring the bandgap energy by varying material composition.

We report on the nonlinear spectroscopy of water vapor at THz frequencies. Atmospheric water vapor has a rich spectrum with several strong resonances at frequencies below 3 THz, falling within the range of operation of most existing THz sources. We observe an extremely large nonlinear response to THz radiation at the positions of these resonances. Using the optical Kerr model for the nonlinear response, we estimate a minimum nonlinear refractive index of the order of 10^2 m^2/W. Our results provide insight into the energy levels of the water molecule and give a more accurate picture of its response to electromagnetic radiation, paving the way to more accurate THz spectroscopy, imaging and sensing systems, and thereby facilitating future emerging THz technologies.

We report on the study of the third-order nonlinear optical interactions in In$_{x}$Ga$_{1-x}$As$_{y}$P$_{1-y}$/InP strip-loaded waveguides. The material composition and waveguide structures were optimized for enhanced nonlinear optical interactions. We performed self-phase modulation, four-wave mixing and nonlinear absorption measurements at the pump wavelength 1568 nm in our waveguides. The nonlinear phase shift of up to $2.5π$ has been observed in self-phase modulation experiments. The measured value of the two-photon absorption coefficient $α_2$ was 15 cm/GW. The four-wave mixing conversion range, representing the wavelength difference between maximally separated signal and idler spectral components, was observed to be 45 nm. Our results indicate that InGaAsP has a high potential as a material platform for nonlinear photonic devices, provided that the operation wavelength range outside the two-photon absorption window is selected.

Collective responses of localized surface plasmon resonances, known as surface lattice resonances (SLRs) in metal nanoparticle arrays, can lead to high quality factors (~100), large local-field enhancements and strong light-matter interactions. SLRs have found many applications in linear optics, but little work of the influence of SLRs on nonlinear optics has been reported. Here we show how SLRs could be utilized to enhance nonlinear optical interactions. We devote special attention to the sum-frequency, difference-frequency, and third-harmonic generation processes because of their potential for the realization of novel sources of light. We also demonstrate how such arrays could be engineered to enhance higher-order nonlinear optical interactions through cascaded nonlinear processes. In particular, we demonstrate how the efficiency of third-harmonic generation could be engineered via cascaded second-order responses.
