Symplectic mechanics of relativistic spinning compact bodies II.: Canonical formalism in the Schwarzschild spacetime
Abstract: This work constitutes the second part of a series of studies that aim to utilise tools from Hamiltonian mechanics to investigate the motion of an extended body in general relativity. The first part of this work [Refs. [1, 2]] constructed a ten-dimensional, covariant Hamiltonian framework encompassing all the linear-in-spin corrections to the geodesic motion in arbitrary spacetime. This framework w… ▽ More

On the integrability of extended test body dynamics around black holes
Abstract: In general relativity, the motion of an extended test body is influenced by its proper rotation, or spin. We present a covariant and physically self-consistent Hamiltonian framework to study this motion, up to quadratic order in the body's spin, including a spin-induced quadrupole, and in an arbitrary background spacetime. The choice of spin supplementary condition and degeneracies associated with… ▽ More

Exploring the Truth and Beauty of Theory Landscapes with Machine Learning

Symplectic mechanics of relativistic spinning compact bodies I.: Covariant foundations and integrability around black holes
Abstract: In general relativity, the motion of an extended body moving in a given spacetime can be described by a particle on a (generally non-geodesic) worldline. Abstract: While most theorists are tied to the mast of four dimensions, some have found it irresistible to speculate about eleven dimensions, the domain of M-theory. We outline a program which starts from the light-cone description of supergravity, and tracks its divergences to suggest the existence of an infinite component theory which in the light-cone relies on the coset $F_4/SO(9)$, long known to be l… ▽ More

Seesaw and the Riddle of Mass
Abstract: The prediction of small neutrino masses through the Seesaw Mechanism and their subsequent measurement suggests that the natural cut-off of the Standard Model is very high indeed. The recent neutrino data must be interpreted as a reflection of physics at very high energy. We examine their implications in terms of ideas of Grand Unification and Supersymmetry, and as possible hints for a unified th… ▽ More

Neutrinos: Key to New Physics
Abstract: The Seesaw mechanism predicted tiny neutrino masses by postulating a new large scale in particle physics, using new theoretical ideas prompted by the Standard Model. It adds credence to a theoretical vista that is a quarter century old, and fits with the most endearing speculations of ultimate unification. By relating the measurement of static neutrino properties to near-Planck physics, it may e… ▽ More

Continuous Spin Representations from Group Contraction
Abstract: We consider how the continuous spin representation (CSR) of the Poincare group in four dimensions can be generated by dimensional reduction. The analysis uses the front-form little group in five dimensions, which must yield the Euclidean group E(2), the little group of the CSR. We consider two cases, one is the single spin massless representation of the Poincare group in five dimensions, the oth… ▽ More

Oxidizing SuperYang-Mills from (N=4,d=4) to (N=1,d=10)
Abstract: We introduce superspace generalizations of the transverse derivatives to rewrite the four-dimensional N=4 Yang-Mills theory into the fully ten-dimensional N=1 Yang-Mills in light-cone form. The explicit SuperPoincare algebra is constructed and invariance of the ten-dimensional action is proved.

Chasing CHOOZ
Abstract: We relate the MNS and CKM mixing matrices using ideas from grand unification. We catalog models in terms of the family symmetries of the down quark mass matrices, and emphasize the role of the Cabibbo angle in the lepton mixing matrix. We find a large class of models with an observable CHOOZ angle \sim λ/\sqrt{2}
