Abstract:
Two structures have been proposed in the literature for the b-phase of the ferroelectric polymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (b-PVDF); planar-zigzag and alternatively-deflected forms. Two structures have been proposed in the literature for the b-phase of the ferroelectric polymer, poly(vinylidene fluoride) (b-PVDF); planar-zigzag and alternatively-deflected forms. Using density-functional theory, we have found the planar-zigzag structure is the preferred form and upon atomic relaxation, the alternatively-deflected structure attains a structure very similar to the planar-zigzag structure. In order to better understand the atomic origin of the ferroelectricity in b-PVDF, we have for the first time determined the dynamic Born effective charges (Z*) for the planar-zigzag structure using a Berry-phase approach. When compared to their nominal ionic values, the Z* show anomalous differences. Using these effective charges, we describe the polarity of the bonds with b-PVDF and show the extent of atomic-motion-induced (or dynamic) charge transfer within this ferroelectric material. In addition, our effective charges are different to previously-determined Mulliken charges, due to the inherent differences between static and dynamic charges.

A density-functional study of the alternatively-deflected zigzag structure for the beta-phase of poly(vinylidene fluoride) or (-CH2-CF2-)n is presented. Structure, polarization and effective charges have been determined. Using lattice constants and atomic positions transformed from experiment, the space group for the alternatively-deflected zigzag structure was found to be Cc2m (C2v 16), in agreement with previous studies. We find a polarization for the alternatively-deflected structure identical to that of the planar-zigzag structure with small changes in the accompanying effective charges.

We present the computation of structural and polarization for a ferroelectric polymer, specifically, the beta-phase of poly(vinylidene fluoride) or (-CH$_2$-CF$_2$-)$_n$. Two structures have been described in the literature: one containing an undistorted carbon backbone (planar-zigzag) and the other containing alternatively deflected -CF$_2$- groups. Previous studies have indicated that these deflections have no significant effect on calculated elastic properties. We employ density functional theory within the generalized gradient approximation to find relaxed atomic positions for the planar-zigzag structure. The relaxed structure is in good agreement with the X-ray studies. In addition, we have computed the spontaneous polarization and Born effective charges for this structure using a Berry-phase approach. The spontaneous polarization agrees well with results from other density functional theory studies. The effective charges are considerably smaller as compared to those in inorganic ferroelectric materials and show a small amount of charge transfer between the -CH$_2$- and -CF$_2$- moieties.

We generate a series of pseudopotentials to examine the relationship between pseudoatomic properties and solid-state results. We find that lattice constants and bulk moduli are quite sensitive to eigenvalue, total-energy difference and tail norm errors, and clear correlations emerge. These trends motivate our identification of two criteria for accurate transition metal pseudopotentials. We find that both the preservation of all-electron derivative of tail norm with respect to occupation and the preservation of all-electron derivative of eigenvalue with respect to occupation {[Phys. Rev. B {\bf 48}, 5031 (1993)]} are necessary to give accurate bulk metal lattice constants and bulk moduli. We also show how the fairly wide range of lattice constant and bulk modulus results found in the literature can be easily explained by pseudopotential effects.

This method is based on the virtual crystal approximation (VCA), in which two or more component potentials are averaged into a composite atomic potential. In our method, we construct a virtual atom with the correctly averaged atomic size and atomic eigenvalues. We have used our new method to study the composition dependent phase transition in Pb(Zr_{1-x}Ti_x)O_3 lying between x=0.5 and x=0.4. We correctly predict the experimentally determined phase transition from the tetragonal phase to a low-temperature rhombohedral phase between these two compositions.

We present a new method for modeling disordered solid solutions, based on the virtual crystal approximation (VCA). The VCA is a tractable way of studying configurationally disordered systems; traditionally, the potentials which represent atoms of two or more elements are averaged into a composite atomic potential. We have overcome significant shortcomings of the standard VCA by develo** a potential which yields averaged atomic properties. We perform the VCA on a ferroelectric oxide, determining the energy differences between the high-temperature rhombohedral, low-temperature rhombohedral and tetragonal phases of Pb(Zr_{1-x}Ti_x)O_3 at x=0.5 and comparing these results to superlattice calculations and experiment. We then use our new method to determine the preferred structural phase at x=0.4. We find that the low-temperature rhombohedral phase becomes the ground state at x=0.4, in agreement with experimental findings.

In particular we investigate the induced stress fields resulting from homogeneous deformations for tetragonal PbTiO_3 and rhombohedral PbZrO_3. As an extension of these findings we also compute the induced stress fields resulting from homogeneous deformations of the (100) and (111) orderings of Pb(Zr_0.5Ti_0.5)O_3. The stress-field responses in these four materials are compared and their piezoelectric responses are discussed.
