Multi-Version Concurrency Control (MVCC) is a common mechanism for achieving linearizable range queries in database systems and concurrent data-structures. The core idea is to keep previous versions of nodes to serve range queries, while still providing atomic reads and updates. Existing concurrent data-structure implementations, that support linearizable range queries, are either slow, use locks, or rely on blocking reclamation schemes. We present EEMARQ, the first scheme that uses MVCC with lock-free memory reclamation to obtain a fully lock-free data-structure supporting linearizable inserts, deletes, contains, and range queries. Evaluation shows that EEMARQ outperforms existing solutions across most workloads, with lower space overhead and while providing full lock freedom.

The transverse momentum spectra of the $ρ/ω$ and $φ$ mesons are measured in the full $p_\mathrm{T}$ range accessible, from $p_\mathrm{T} = 0$ up to 2 GeV/$c$. The nuclear dependence of the production cross sections of the $η$, $ω$ and $φ$ mesons has been found to be consistent with the power law $σ_\mathrm{pA} \propto \mathrm{A}^α$, with the $α$ parameter increasing as a function of $p_\mathrm{T}$ for all the particles, and an approximate hierarchy $α_η\approx α_φ> α_ω$. The cross section ratios $σ_η/σ_ω$, $σ_ρ/σ_ω$ and $σ_φ/σ_ω$ have been studied as a function of the size A of the production target, and an increase of the $η$ and $φ$ yields relative to the $ω$ is observed from p-Be to p-U collisions.

Flat combining (FC) is a synchronization paradigm in which a single thread, holding a global lock, collects requests by multiple threads for accessing a concurrent data structure and applies their combined requests to it. Although FC is sequential, it significantly reduces synchronization overheads and cache invalidations and thus often provides better performance than that of lock-free implementations. The recent emergence of non-volatile memory (NVM) technologies increases the interest in the development of persistent concurrent objects. These are objects that are able to recover from system failures and ensure consistency by retaining their state in NVM and fixing it, if required, upon recovery. Of particular interest are detectable objects that, in addition to ensuring consistency, allow recovery code to infer if a failed operation took effect before the crash and, if it did, obtain its response. In this work, we present the first FC-based persistent object implementations. Specifically, we introduce a detectable FC-based implementation of a concurrent LIFO stack, a concurrent FIFO queue, and a double-ended queue. Our empirical evaluation establishes that due to flat combining, the novel implementations require a much smaller number of costly persistence instructions than competing algorithms and are therefore able to significantly outperform them.

Concurrency has been a subject of study for more than 50 years. Still, many developers struggle to adapt their sequential code to be accessed concurrently. This need has pushed for generic solutions and specific concurrent data structures.
Wait-free universal constructs are attractive as they can turn a sequential implementation of any object into an equivalent, yet concurrent and wait-free, implementation. While highly relevant from a research perspective, these techniques are of limited practical use when the underlying object or data structure is sizable. The copy operation can consume much of the CPU's resources and significantly degrade performance.
To overcome this limitation, we have designed CX, a multi-instance-based wait-free universal construct that substantially reduces the amount of copy operations. The construct maintains a bounded number of instances of the object that can potentially be brought up to date. We applied CX to several sequential implementations of data structures, including STL implementations, and compared them with existing wait-free constructs. Our evaluation shows that CX performs significantly better in most experiments, and can even rival with hand-written lock-free and wait-free data structures, simultaneously providing wait-free progress, safe memory reclamation and high reader scalability.

We observe a significant nuclear suppression of the J/psi yield per nucleon-nucleon collision, with a larger effect at lower incident energy, and we compare this result with previous observations by other fixed-target experiments. An attempt to disentangle the different contributions to the observed suppression has been carried out by studying the dependence of nuclear effects on x_2, the fraction of nucleon momentum carried by the interacting parton in the target nucleus.

We now present first results on the associated angular distributions. Using the Collins-Soper reference frame, the structure function parameters λ, μand νare measured to be zero, and the projected distributions in polar and azimuth angles are found to be uniform. The absence of any polarization is consistent with the interpretation of the excess dimuons as thermal radiation from a randomized system.

The NA60 experiment at the CERN SPS has measured muon pairs with unprecedented precision in 158A GeV In-In collisions. A strong excess of pairs above the known sources is observed in the whole mass region 0.2<M<2.6 GeV. The mass spectrum for M<1 GeV is consistent with a dominant contribution from pi+pi- -> rho -> mu+mu- annihilation. The associated rho spectral function shows a strong broadening, but essentially no shift in mass. For M>1 GeV, the excess is found to be prompt, not due to enhanced charm production, with pronounced differences to Drell-Yan pairs. The slope parameter Teff associated with the transverse momentum spectra rises with mass up to the rho, followed by a sudden decline above. The rise for M<1 GeV is consistent with radial flow of a hadronic emission source. The seeming absence of significant flow for M>1 GeV and its relation to parton-hadron duality is discussed in detail, suggesting a dominantly partonic emission source in this region. A comparison of the data to the present status of theoretical modeling is also contained. The accumulated empirical evidence, including also a Planck-like shape of the mass spectra at low pT and the lack of polarization, is consistent with a global interpretation of the excess dimuons as thermal radiation. We conclude with first results on omega in-medium effects.

The yield of muon pairs in the invariant mass region 1<M<2.5 GeV/c^2 produced in heavy-ion collisions significantly exceeds the sum of the two expected contributions, Drell-Yan dimuons and muon pairs from the decays of D meson pairs. These sources properly account for the dimuons produced in proton-nucleus collisions. In this paper, we show that dimuons are also produced in excess in 158 A GeV In-In collisions. We furthermore observe, by tagging the dimuon vertices, that this excess is not due to enhanced D meson production, but made of prompt muon pairs, as expected from a source of thermal dimuons specific to high-energy nucleus-nucleus collisions. The yield of this excess increases significantly from peripheral to central collisions, both with respect to the Drell-Yan yield and to the number of nucleons participating in the collisions. Furthermore, the transverse mass distributions of the excess dimuons are well described by an exponential function, with inverse slope values around 190 MeV. The values are independent of mass and significantly lower than those found at masses below 1 GeV/c^2, rising there up to 250 MeV due to radial flow. This suggests the emission source of thermal dimuons above 1 GeV/c^2 to be of largely partonic origin, when radial flow has not yet built up.

The workshop gathered both theorists and experimentalists to discuss the current status of investigations of high-energy photon-induced processes at different colliders (HERA, RHIC, and Tevatron) as well as preparations for extension of these studies at the LHC. The main physics topics covered were: (i) small-$x$ QCD in photoproduction studies with protons and in electromagnetic (aka. ultraperipheral) nucleus-nucleus collisions, (ii) hard diffraction physics at hadron colliders, and (iii) photon-photon collisions at very high energies: electroweak and beyond the Standard Model processes. These mini-proceedings consist of an introduction and short summaries of the talks presented at the meeting.

The centrality dependence of the J/$ψ$ production, obtained with an analysis technique based only on the J/$ψ$ sample, indicates that a suppression beyond that induced by nuclear absorption is present in In-In collisions, setting in at $\sim$80 participant nucleons. A first study of the systematic errors related with this measurement is discussed. We also present preliminary results on the J/$ψ$ azimuthal distributions.
