Abstract:
The ternary stannide CeRuSn is a static mixed-valent cerium compound with an or-dering of trivalent and intermediate-valent cerium on two distinct crystallographic sites. 119Sn Mössbauer spectra showed two electronically almost identical tin atoms at 323 K, while at 298 K and below (77 and 4.2 K) two tin sites can clearly be distinguished. 119Sn solid state NMR experiments are performed to probe t…

119Sn solid state NMR experiments are performed to probe the local hyperfine fields at the two different Sn sites. 119Sn NMR powder spectra are nicely fitted with two Sn sites with nearly the same magnetic anisotropy, but with different absolute shift values. Both Sn sites are strongly affected by crossover-like transitions between 100 and 280 K. This local-site study confirms the superstructure modulations found in previous investiga-tions. Towards lower temperatures the powder spectra are broadened giving strong evidence for the antiferromagnetically ordered ground state.

We present an exact enumeration algorithm for identifying the {\it native} configuration - a maximally compact self avoiding walk configuration that is also the minimum energy configuration for a given set of contact-energy schemes; the process is implicitly sequence-dependent. In particular, we show that the 25-step native configuration on a diamond lattice consists of two sheet-like structures and is the same for all the contact-energy schemes, ${(-1,0,0);(-7,-3,0); (-7,-3,-1); (-7,-3,1)}$; on a square lattice also, the 24-step native configuration is independent of the energy schemes considered. However, the designing sequence for the diamond lattice walk depends on the energy schemes used whereas that for the square lattice walk does not. We have calculated the temperature-dependent specific heat for these designed sequences and the four energy schemes using the exact density of states. These data show that the energy scheme $(-7,-3,-1)$ is preferable to the other three for both diamond and square lattice because the associated sequences give rise to a sharp low-temperature peak. We have also presented data for shorter (23-, 21- and 17-step) walks on a diamond lattice to show that this algorithm helps identify a unique minimum energy configuration by suitably taking care of the ground-state degeneracy. Interestingly, all these shorter target configurations also show sheet-like secondary structures.

Fe-doped ZnO nanocrystals are successfully synthesized and structurally characterized by using x-ray diffraction and transmission electron microscopy. Magnetization measurements on the same system reveal a ferromagnetic to paramagnetic transition temperature > 450 K with a low-temperature transition from ferromagnetic to spin-glass state due to canting of the disordered surface spins in the nanoparticle system. Local magnetic probes like EPR and Mossbauer indicate the presence of Fe in both valence states Fe2+ and Fe3+. We argue that the presence of Fe3+ is due to the possible hole do** in the system by cation (Zn) vacancies. In a successive ab-initio electronic structure calculation, the effects of defects (e.g. O- and Zn-vacancy) on the nature and origin of ferromagnetism are investigated for Fe-doped ZnO system. Electronic structure calculations suggest hole do** (Zn-vacancy) to be more effective to stabilize ferromagnetism in Fe doped ZnO and our results are consistent with the experimental signature of hole do** in the ferromagnetic Fe doped ZnO samples.

Such a map** is necessary for studying the thermodynamic behaviour of this system. We have presented the specific heat data for the IGW, obtained from extensive simulations on a square lattice; we observe a broad hump in the specific heat above the $θ$-point, contrary to expectation.

The field variation of the electrical resistance in the flux-line lattice prepared by different experimental path, namely zero field cooling (ZFC) and field cooling (FC), shows a distinct path dependence in the vicinity of the peak-effect regime. In the field cooled state, small cycling of magnetic field modifies the resistance drastically around the peak-effect regime, highlighting the metastable nature of that state in the concerned regime.
