Although there is no complete theory of high temperature superconductivity, the importance of CuO$_2$ planes in cuprate superconductors is confirmed from both theory and experiments. Strong Coulomb repulsion between electrons on the CuO$_2$ plane makes the resultant electron system highly correlated and a difficult problem to solve since exact solutions of many-body Hamiltonian in two dimensions do not exist. If however, superconductivity can arise in structures having chains rather than planes and having a high critical temperature, then the high temperature superconductivity problem could become more tractable since exact solutions in one dimension do exist. In this paper, we report the observation of bulk superconductivity in single crystals of a cuprate Sr$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$CuO$_2$ at very high critical temperature, T$_c$, of $\sim$ 90 K whose structure reveals the presence of infinite double chains of Cu-O-Cu-O instead of CuO$_2$ planes, thus, ensuring quasi-one dimensional superconductivity. Bulk superconducting behaviour was observed in \textit{dc} magnetisation, \textit{ac} susceptibility as well as resistance measurements. The observation of bulk superconductivity in Sr$_x$Ca$_{1-x}$CuO$_2$ having chains of Cu-O-Cu-O rather than planes of CuO$_2$ at a high T$_c$ of 90 K is expected to profoundly impact our understanding of high temperature superconductivity.

We present high resolution thermal expansion measurement data obtained with high relative sensitivity of $Δ$L$/$L = 10$^{-9}$ and accuracy of $\pm$2$\%$ using closed cycle refrigerators employing two different dilatometers. The data quality is in excellent agreement with those obtained using wet liquid helium based systems, demonstrating great technological possibilities for future thermal expansion measurements in view of the depleting resource of liquid helium. The cryogenic environment was achieved using two different cryostats that use pulse tube and Gifford-Mcmahon coolers as the cryocoolers. Both the dilatometers employ a spring movement for achieving the parallel movement of the capacitor plates. $Dilatometer \#1$ was built in-house based on a published design while $dilatometer \#2$ was obtained commercially. Cell calibration for $dilatometer \#1$ was done using copper and minimal deviation of the cell effect from the published values were found. Linear thermal expansion coefficient $α$ obtained using both dilatometers was evaluated using two different techniques, namely, numerical differentiation and derivative of a polynomial fit. The resultant $α$ obtained for metals silver and aluminium showed excellent match with published values obtained on systems using wet cryostats. Finite element method simulations were performed for understanding the spring movement in each dilatometer using which the effect of different forces$/$pressures on the displacement of the spring was studied. Finally, we report thermal expansion measurements done on single crystals of two high temperature superconductors YBa$_2$Cu$_{3-x}$Al$_x$O$_{6+δ}$ and Bi$_2$Sr$_2$CaCu$_2$O$_{8+x}$ along the c-axis and found very good match with published data obtained using wet liquid helium based cryostats.

We have used Rietveld refinement technique to determine the extent of intergrowth of Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CuO$_{6+x}$ phase and co-crystallization of competing phases in a high temperature superconductor Bi$_{2}$Sr$_{2}$CaCu$_{2}$O$_{8+x}$ (Bi-2212). The refinement was done on powder diffractograms obtained on powders of Bi-2212 made by grinding single crystals of Bi-2212 grown using two different self-flux techniques, namely pressure technique (PT) and regrowth technique(RG). JANA and FullPROF programs were used for refinement, both of which gave consistent results. Bi and Sr atom's positions were refined in the average structure of centrosymmetric space group $Bbmb$. To incorporate for Bi atoms modulation and modulation vector, refinement was done in centrosymmetric space group N$^{Bbmb}_{1\bar{1}1}$(Bbmb(0$γ$1)). It was found that the b* component of the modulation vector decreased with a decrease in the superconducting transition temperature in PT sample compared to the RG sample, suggesting a better alignment of the CuO$_2$ planes with respect to Bi-O planes in PT sample. All the samples were also found to exhibit strong preferred orientation effect. Values of March-Dollase parameters corresponding to the preferred orientation function were obtained. We also calculated Brindley absorption contrast factors \textit{t}$_φ$ and the effect of micro-absorption on the quantity of phases present in each sample. A Rietveld refinement incorporating all the factors resulted in exceptional values of goodness of fit parameters for all the samples with the lowest value of 2.08 found for the PT sample ground for 2 minutes. Additionally, the powders corresponding to the PT crystals were found to have no co-crystallising phase and $\sim$ 94$\%$ Bi-2212 phase, suggesting that crystals grown by pressure technique are of extremely good quality, much better than those grown by RG flux technique.

This work reports on a novel and simple synthetic route for the growth of metal-organic crystal [Cu(C2O4)(4-aminopyridine)2(H2O)]n of large size using the technique of liquid-liquid diffusion or layer diffusion. Single crystal X-ray diffraction measurements revealed a very good quality of the grown single crystals with a small value 1.101 of goodness of fit R. Rietveld refinement done on powder X-ray diffractogram obtained on few single crystals crushed together revealed a very small value of R as 3.45, indicating very good crystal quality in a batch of crystals. Density functional theory with three different basis sets generated the optimized geometry of a monomeric unit as well as its vibrational spectra. Comparison between experimentally obtained bond lengths, bond angles, IR frequencies etc. suggest (B3LYP/LanL2DZ, B3LYP/6-311++ G(d,p) basis set to describe the properties the best. Magnetic susceptibility measurements confirm the metal-organic crystal [Cu(C2O4)(4-aminopyridine)2(H2O)]n to be a very good representation of a spin 1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet.
