Results are reported of an experiment performed at the Eclipse laser facility in CELIA, Bordeaux, on the generation of strong electromagnetic pulses. Measurements were performed of the target neutralization current, the total target charge and the tangential component of the magnetic field for the laser energies ranging from 45 mJ to 92 mJ with the pulse duration approximately 40 fs, and for the pulse durations ranging from 39 fs to 1000 fs, with the laser energy approximately 90 mJ. It was found that the values obtained for thick (mm scale) Cu targets are visibly higher than values reported in previous experiments, which is argued to be a manifestation of a strong dependence of the target electric polarization process on the laser contrast and hence on the amount of preplasma. It was also found that values obtained for thin (micrometer scale) Al foils were visibly higher than values for thick Cu targets, especially for pulse durations longer than 100 fs. The correlations between the total target charge versus the maximum value of the target neutralization current, and the maximum value of the tangential component of the magnetic field versus the total target charge were analysed. They were found to be in very good agreement with correlations seen in data from previous experiments, which provides a good consistency check on our experimental procedures.

Measurements are reported of the target neutralization current, the target charge, and the tangential component of the magnetic field generated as a result of laser-target interaction by pulses with the energy in the range of 45 mJ to 92 mJ on target and the pulse duration from 39 fs to 1000 fs. The experiment was performed at the Eclipse facility in CELIA, Bordeaux. The aim of the experiment was to extend investigations performed for the thick (mm scale) targets to the case of thin (micrometer thickness) targets in a way that would allow for a straightforward comparison of the results. We found that thin foil targets tend to generate 20 to 50 percent higher neutralization current and the target charge than the thick targets. The measurement of the tangential component of the magnetic field had shown that the initial spike is dominated by the 1 ns pulse consistent with the 1 ns pulse of the neutralization current, but there are some differences between targets of different type on sub-ns scale, which is an effect going beyond a simple picture of the target acting as an antenna. The sub-ns structure appears to be reproducible to surprising degree. We found that there is in general a linear correlation between the maximum value of the magnetic field and the maximum neutralization current, which supports the target-antenna picture, except for pulses hundreds of fs long.

A scenario for the enhanced laser-driven ion acceleration from a thin solid target at high laser intensity is considered, where the target is enclosed in a reflecting cavity. The laser pulse reflected from the target is redirected towards the target by reflection at the inner cavity wall. This scenario is discussed in the context of sub-wavelength foil acceleration in the radiation pressure regime, when plasma dynamics is known to be reasonably well described by the light-sail model. A semi-analytic formula is presented that describes the effect of cavity reflections in one-dimensional geometry. The effect of cavity reflections on sub-wavelength foil acceleration is then evaluated for two concrete examples of ultra-intense laser pulses of picosecond and femtosecond duration.

The problem of improving the reliability of perturbative QCD predictions at moderate energies is considered. These predictions suffer from substantial renormalization scheme dependence, which is illustrated using as an example the QCD effective charge appearing in the static interquark potential and the QCD corrections to the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rule in the deep inelastic neutrino-nucleon scattering. To reduce this scheme dependence, it is proposed to use a modified perturbation expansion, based on a modified couplant, which is perturbatively consistent with the conventional running coupling parameter, but is free from Landau singularity and has smaller renormalization scheme dependence. The modified couplant is obtained by integrating the renormalization group equation with an appropriately constructed nonpolynomial generator. The renormalization scheme dependence of the perturbative predictions in the modified expansion is discussed in detail, including the predictions selected by the Principle of Minimal Sensitivity. It is shown that the modified predictions are much more stable with respect to change of the renormalization scheme parameters than the predictions obtained in the conventional approach. It is also found that the modified predictions display somewhat weaker energy dependence than the predictions obtained with the conventional expansion, which may be interesting from the point of view of comparing the low energy and high energy determinations of the strong coupling parameter.

The problem of precise evaluation of the perturbative QCD predictions at moderate energies is considered. Substantial renormalization scheme dependence of the perturbative predictions obtained with the conventional renormalization group improved perturbative approximants is discussed, using as an example the QCD effective charge appearing in the static interquark potential and the QCD corrections to the Gross-Llewellyn-Smith sum rule in the deep inelastic neutrino-nucleon scattering. A new method for evaluating the QCD predictions at moderate energies is proposed, based on a modified couplant, which is constructed to be free from Landau singularity and less renormalization scheme dependent than the conventional couplant. The modified couplant contains an adjustable parameter, which may be used to improve the modified perturbative predictions in low orders by utilizing some information outside of perturbation theory. This parameter is fixed by matching the modified predictions to the phenomenological expression for the effective charge in the interquark potential. The renormalization scheme dependence of the perturbative predictions in the modified expansion is then discussed in detail, including the predictions selected by the Principle of Minimal Sensitivity applied to the modified expansion. It is shown that the predictions obtained in the modified expansion are much more stable with respect to change of the renormalization scheme parameters than the predictions obtained in the conventional approach. It is also found that the modified predictions display somewhat weaker energy dependence then the predictions obtained with the conventional expansion, which may help accommodate in a consistent way some low values of the strong coupling parameter measured at low energies with the values measured at high energies.

The problem of precise evaluation of perturbative QCD predictions at moderate energies is addressed. In order to improve stability of the predictions with respect to change of the renormalization scheme it is proposed to replace the sequence of conventional renormalization group improved approximants by a sequence of modified approximants, involving a modified running coupling constant, which is free from Landau singularity and much less renormalization scheme depenedent than the conventional running coupling constant. A concrete model of the modified coupling constant is proposed and it is shown, that the QCD corrections to the static interquark potential evaluated with this coupling constant are indeed much less sensitive to the scheme parameters. It is pointed out, that the modified predictions display somewhat weaker energy dependence compared to the conventional predictions, which may help accomodate in a consistent way some very low and very high energy determinations of the strong coupling constant.

The fits in the vector and the axial-vector channel are investigated in the next-to-leading and the next-to-next-to-leading order. The next-to-next-to-leading order results are found to be relatively stable with respect to change of the renormalization scheme. The next-next-to-leading order QCD corrections to the e+e- annihilation into hadrons are considered. The stability of the predictions with respect to change of the renormalization scheme is discussed in detail for the case of five, four and three active quark flavors. The analysis is based on the recently proposed condition for selecting renormalization schemes according to the degree of cancellation that they introduce in the expression for the scheme invariant combination of the expansion coefficients. It is demonstrated that the scheme dependence ambiguity in the predictions obtained with the conventional expansion is substantial, particularly at lower energies. It is shown however, that the stability of the predictions is greatly improved when QCD corrections are evaluated in a more precise way, by utilizing the contour integral representation and calculating numerically the contour integral.

A systematic method is proposed for analyzing the renormalization scheme uncertainties in the next-next-to-leading order QCD predicitions, based on a condition which eliminates schemes that give rise to large cancellations in the expression for the characteristic scheme invariant combination of the expansion coefficients. Using this method it is shown that the QCD corrections to the tau lepton decay are rather stable with respect to change of the scheme, provided that an improved formula is used, which involves numerical evaluation of the contour integral in the complex energy plane with the Adler function under the integral. Optimized predictions for the tau decay corrections are given. It is shown that also in the case of the of QCD corrections to $e^{+}e^{-}$ annihilation into hadrons the conventional expansion has sizable scheme dependence, even at large energies. However, a considerable improvement is obtained when the QCD corrections are expressed as a contour integral, with the Adler function under the integral, resumming in this way the large $π^{2}$ contributions. In the case of the corrections to the Bjorken sum rule for polarized structure functions it is found that for $n_{f}=4$ they are insensitive to change of the scheme. However, the $n_{f}=3$ expression is found to be strongly scheme dependent at lower energies.
