Let $m$ denote the number of quasielectrons (QEs) in a quantum Hall system containing $N$ particles altogether. We show in several general cases that for systems containing $m$ QEs in a single angular momentum shell above $N-m$ Fermions in an incompressible quantum liquid (IQL) state having filling factor $ν=\frac{1}{3}$ that there always exists a configuration whose symmetric correlation function $G$ is nonzero. This extends recent comparable results concerning the IQL state. As a consequence, one can obtain (explicitly) a configuration having a nonzero $G$ for all $N=8$ particle systems containing any number of QEs. To establish our result, we construct a family of multi-graphs on $N$ vertices satisfying certain restraints on the degrees of the vertices and possessing the property that whenever one computes the linear symmetrization of the graph monomial of any member of the family, the result is always nonzero. The nonzero linear symmetrization that is obtained in each case is in fact an example of what is called a relative semi-invariant of a (generic) binary form of degree $N$. Thus, in addition to providing new correlation functions for systems of interacting Fermions containing QEs, our construction could be of interest from both the invariant and graph theoretic standpoints.

Consider a system of $N$ electrons projected onto the lowest Landau level (LLL) with filling factor of the form $n/(2pn\pm1)<1/2$ and $N$ a multiple of $n$. We show that there always exists a two-dimensional symmetric correlation factor (arising as a nonzero symmetrization) for such systems and hence one can always write a variational wave function. This extends an earlier observation of Laughlin for an incompressible quantum liquid (IQL) state with filling factor equal to the reciprocal of an odd integer $ \geq 3$. To do so, we construct a family of $d$-regular multi-graphs on $N$ vertices for any $N$ whose graph-monomials have nonzero linear symmetrization and obtain, as special cases, the aforementioned nonzero correlations for the IQL state. The nonzero linear symmetrization that is obtained is in fact an example of what is called a binary invariant of type $(N,d)$. Thus, in addition to supplying new variational wave functions for systems of interacting Fermions, our construction is of potential interest from both the graph and invariant theoretic viewpoints.

The correlations that give rise to incompressible quantum liquid (IQL) states in fractional quantum Hall systems are determined by the pseudopotential $V(\mathcal R)$ describing the interaction of a pair of Fermions in a degenerate Landau level (LL) as a function of relative pair angular momentum $\mathcal R$. $V(\mathcal R)$ is known for a number of different Fermion systems, e.g. electrons in the lowest Landau level (LL0) or the first excited Landau level (LL1), and for quasiparticles of Laughlin-Jain IQL states. Laughlin correlations, the avoidance of pair states with the smallest values of $\mathcal R$, occur only when $V(\mathcal R)$ satisfies certain conditions. We show that Jain's composite Fermion (CF) picture is valid only if the conditions necessary for Laughlin correlations are satisfied, and we present a rigorous justification of the CF picture without the need of introducing an "irrelevant" mean field energy scale. Electrons in LL1 and quasielectrons in IQL states (e.g. QEs in CF LL1) do not necessarily support Laughlin correlations. Numerical diagonalization studies for small systems of Fermions (electrons in LL0 or in LL1, and QEs in CF LL1), with the use appropriate pseudopotentials $V(\mathcal R)$, show clear evidence for different types of correlations. The relation between LL degeneracy $g=2\ell+1$ and number of Fermions $N$ at which IQL states are found is known for a limited range of $N$ values. However, no simple intuitive models that we have tried satisfactorily describe all of the systems we have studied. Successes and shortcomings of some simple models are discussed, and suggestions for further investigation are made.

We present a quantitative study of most prominent incompressible quantum Hall states in the partially filled first excited Landau level (LL1) which have been recently studied experimentally by Choi et al. The pseudopotential describing the electron - electron interaction in LL1 is harmonic at short range. It produces a series of incompressible states which is different from its LL0 counterpart. The numerical data indicate that the most prominent states $ν={5/2}$, 7/3, and 8/3 are not produced by Laughlin correlated electrons, but result from a tendency of electrons to form pairs or larger clusters which eventually become Laughlin correlated. States with smaller gaps at filling factors 14/5, 16/7, 11/5, 19/7 are Laughlin correlated electron or hole states and fit Jain's sequence of filled $\rm{CF}^4$ levels.

The two fractional states are examples of CF liquids with spin dynamics. There is a close analogy between the ferromagnetic (spin polarization P=1) and paramagnetic (P=0) incompressible ground states that occur in all three systems in the limits of large and small Zeeman spin splitting. However, the excitation spectra are different. At filling factor 2, we find spin domains at half-polarization (P=1/2), while antiferromagnetic order seems most favorable in the CF systems. The transition between P=0 and 1, as seen when e.g. the magnetic field is tilted, is also studied by exact diagonalization in toroidal and spherical geometries. The essential role of an effective CF-CF interaction is discussed, and the experimentally observed incompresible half-polarized state is found in some models.

Binding energies of negative and positive trions in doped GaAs quantum wells in high magnetic fields are studied by exact numerical diagonalization in spherical geometry. Compared to earlier calculations, finite width of the quantum well and its asymmetry caused by one-sided do** are both fully taken into account by using self-consistent subband wave functions in the integration of Coulomb matrix elements, and by inclusion of higher subbands along with several Landau levels in the Hilbert space. Detailed analysis of the accuracy and convergence of the exact diagonalization scheme is presented, including dependence on Landau level and subband mixing, sensitivity to the (not well known) single-particle spectrum in the valence band, and the estimate of finite-size errors. The main results are the exciton dispersion and trion binding energy spectrum calculated as a function of the magnetic field, quantum well width, electron concentration, and the presence of an ionized impurity. As a complementary approach, a combination of the exact diagonalization in the quantum well plane and the variational calculation in the normal direction is used as well.

Interaction between spin waves (or excitons) moving in the lowest Landau level is studied using numerical diagonalization. Becuse of complicated statistics obeyed by these composite particles, their effective interaction is completely different from the dipole-dipole interaction predicted in the model of independent (bosonic) waves. In particular, spin waves moving in the same direction attract one another which leads to their dynamical binding. The interaction pseudopotentials V_[up,up](k) and V_[up,down](k) for two spin waves with equal wavevectors k and moving in the same or opposite directions have been calculated and shown to obey power laws V(k) ~ k^alpha at small k. A high value of alpha_[up,up]~4 explains the occurrence of linear bands in the spin excitation spectra of quantum Hall droplets.

Two- and three-body correlations in partially filled degenerate fermion shells are studied numerically for various interactions between the particles. Three distinct correlation regimes are defined, depending on the short-range behavior of the pair pseudopotential. For pseudopotentials similar to those of electrons in the first excited Landau level, correlations at half-filling have a simple three-body form consisting of the maximum avoidance of the triplet state with the smallest relative angular momentum R_3=3. In analogy to the superharmonic criterion for Laughlin two-body correlations, their occurrence is related to the form of the three-body pseudopotential at short range. The spectra of a model three-body repulsion are calculated, and the zero-energy Moore--Read ground state, its +-e/4-charged quasiparticles, and the magnetoroton and pair-breaking bands are all identified. The quasiparticles are correctly described by a composite fermion model appropriate for Halperin's p-type pairing with Laughlin correlations between the pairs. However, the Moore--Read ground state, and specially its excitations, have small overlaps with the corresponding Coulomb eigenstates when calculated on a sphere. The reason lies in surface curvature which affects the form of pair pseudopotential for which the "R_3>3" three-body correlations occur. In finite systems, such pseudopotential must be slightly superharmonic at short range (different from Coulomb pseudopotential). However, the connection with the three-body pseudopotential is less size-dependent, suggesting that the Moore--Read state and its excitations are a more accurate description for experimental nu=5/2 states than could be expected from previous calculations.

Because of this the novel condensed quantum fluid states observed at nu=4/11, 4/13 and other filling fractions cannot possibly be spin polarized Laughlin correlated QP states of the composite Fermion hierarchy. Pairing of the QP's clearly must occur, but the exact nature of the incompressible ground states is not completely clear.

The energy spectra and wavefunctions of up to 14 interacting quasielectrons (QE's) in the Laughlin nu=1/3 fractional quantum Hall (FQH) state are investigated using exact numerical diagonalization. It is shown that at sufficiently high density the QE's form pairs or larger clusters. This behavior, opposite to Laughlin correlations, invalidates the (sometimes invoked) reapplication of the composite fermion picture to the individual QE's. The series of finite-size incompressible ground states are identified at the QE filling factors nu_QE=1/2, 1/3, 2/3, corresponding to the electron fillings nu=3/8, 4/11, 5/13. The equivalent quasihole (QH) states occur at nu_QH=1/4, 1/5, 2/7, corresponding to nu=3/10, 4/13, 5/17. All these six novel FQH states were recently discovered experimentally. Detailed analysis indicates that QE or QH correlations in these states are different from those of well-known FQH electron states (e.g., Laughlin or Moore-Read states), leaving the origin of their incompressibility uncertain. Halperin's idea of Laughlin states of QP pairs is also explored, but is does not seem adequate.

Novel quasiparticles (QP's) called composite Fermions (CF's) have allowed a simple single particle description of the most prominent incompressible states. At nu slightly larger (smaller) than unity, reversed spin electrons (spin holes) can form bound states with K spin waves that are known as skyrmions, S_K^- (antiskyrmions, S_K^+). It is suggested in this work that a valence hole can also bind K spin waves to form an excitonic complex X_K^+, analogous to the S_K^+. One spin hole of the S_K^+ is simply replaced by the valence hole. At nu<=1, a small number of S_K^+'s are present before introduction of the valence hole. The (S_K^+)-(X_K^+) repulsion leads to correlations and photoluminescence similar to those of a dilute electron-(charged-exciton) (e-X^-) system at nu<=1/3. At nu>=1, the (S_K^-)-(X_K^+) attraction can potentially lead to different behavior.

We report on the numerical study of the relaxation rates of nuclear spins coupled through the hyperfine interaction to a two dimensional electron gas (2DEG) at magnetic fields corresponding to both fractional and integral Landau level (LL) fillings nu. The Hamiltonians of up to 20 interacting electrons are diagonalized exactly in the spherical geometry, neglecting finite layer width, disorder, and LL mixing. The spectral functions tau^-1(E) describing response of the 2DEG to the reversal of an embedded localized spin are calculated. In a (locally) incompressible nu=1 or 1/3 state, the finite Coulomb energy of short spin waves, together with the small nuclear Zeeman energy, prevent nuclear spin relaxation even in the limit of vanishing electron Zeeman energy E_Z. However, we find that the nuclear spins can couple to the internal excitations of mobile finite-size skyrmions that appear in the 2DEG at sufficiently low E_Z and at nu slightly different from 1 or 1/3. The experimentally observed dependence of nuclear spin relaxation rate on E_Z and nu is qualitatively explained in terms of the occurrence of skyrmions and antiskyrmions of various topological charge.

The relevant quasiparticles and their interactions are studied, including stable spin wave and skyrmion bound states. For nu=2, a spin instability at a finite value of epsilon=hbar*omega_c-E_Z leads to an abrupt paramagnetic to ferromagnetic transition, in agreement with the mean-field approximation. However, for nu=4/3 a new and unexpected quantum phase transition is found which involves a gradual change from paramagnetic to ferromagnetic occupancy of the partially filled Landau level as epsilon is decreased.

Results are presented of detailed numerical calculations for the spin excitation spectra of a two-dimensional electron gas confined in a quantum well of finite width w, at magnetic fields corresponding to the fractional and integral fillings of the lowest and of excited Landau levels. Spin waves and skyrmions are identified, and their mutual interactions are studied at filling factors nu=1/3, 1, 3, and 5. The smallest skyrmions at nu=1/3 are equivalent to composite fermion charged excitons X_CF^(+/-). Bose condensates of nearly noninteracting spin waves and Laughlin correlations between finite-size skyrmions are found at nu=1 and 1/3 and, for w larger than about two magnetic lengths, also at nu=3 and 5. A general criterion for the occurrence of skyrmions at odd integral fillings and at Laughlin fractional fillings of the lowest Landau level is given in terms of the interaction pseudopotentials. This explains the dependence of skyrmion states on w observed in excited Landau levels.

Unlike in the lowest LL, the pseudopotential in the first excited LL is harmonic at short range. As a result, the incompressible states in this LL have different correlations, occur at different filling factors nu, and cannot be described by a composite fermion model. The series of Laughlin-correlated states of electron pairs is proposed at nu=2+2/(q_2+2) with integer q_2. It includes Moore-Read nu=5/2 state and the nu=7/3 state. Despite coincidence of the values of nu, the latter state has different correlations than Laughlin state of single electrons at nu=1/3 and, in finite systems, occurs at a different LL degeneracy (flux).

To describe photoluminescence, the family of bound $h($QE$_{\rm R})_n$ states of a valence hole $h$ and $n$ QE$_{\rm R}$'s are predicted in analogy to the found earlier fractionally charged excitons $h$QE$_n$. The binding energy and optical selection rules for both families are compared. For d comparable to lambda, the electron-hole interaction is not strong enough to bind a full electron, and fractionally charged excitons hQEn (bound states of a hole and one or more Laughlin quasielectrons, QE) are formed. The effect of these excitonic complexes on the photoluminescence spectrum is studied numerically for a wide range of values of nu and d.

For d smaller than the magnetic length lambda, the hole binds one or more electrons to form neutral (X) or charged (X-) excitons, and PL probes the lifetime and binding energies of these complexes rather than the original correlations of the 2DEG. The low-lying states can be understood in terms of Laughlin-type correlations among the constituent negatively charged Fermions (electrons and X-'s). For d large compared to lambda, the electron--hole interaction is not strong enough to bind a full electron, and fractionally charged excitons (bound states of the hole and one or more Laughlin quasielectrons) hQEn are formed. The PL selection rule associated with rotational invariance (conservation of L) is only weakly violated in the interacting plasma, and the position and oscillator strengths of PL lines can be predicted and compared with numerical calculations.

At d smaller than the magnetic length lambda, the PL spectrum shows recombination of neutral (X) and charged (X-) excitons. At d>lambda, the hole binds one or two Laughlin quasielectrons (QE) of the 2DEG to form fractionally charged excitons (FCX), hQE or hQE2. Different FCX states have different optical properties, and their stability depends critically on the presence of QE's in the 2DEG. We study photoluminescence (PL) of charged excitons ($X^-$) in narrow asymmetric quantum wells in high magnetic fields B. The binding of all $X^-$ states strongly depends on the separation $δ$ of electron and hole layers. The most sensitive is the ``bright'' singlet, whose binding energy decreases quickly with increasing $δ$ even at relatively small B. As a result, the value of B at which the singlet--triplet crossing occurs in the $X^-$ spectrum also depends on $δ$ and decreases from 35 T in a symmetric 10 nm GaAs well to 16 T for $δ=0.5$ nm. Since the critical values of $δ$ at which different $X^-$ states unbind are surprisingly small compared to the well width, the observation of strongly bound $X^-$ states in an experimental PL spectrum implies virtually no layer displacement in the sample. This casts doubt on the interpretation of PL spectra of heterojunctions in terms of $X^-$ recombination.

The photoluminescence (PL) spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the fractional quantum Hall regime is studied as a function of the separation $d$ between the electron and valence hole layers. The abrupt change in the response of the 2DEG to the optically injected hole at $d$ of the order of the magnetic length $λ$ results in a complete reconstruction of the PL spectrum. At $d<λ$, the hole binds one or two electrons to form neutral ($X$) or charged ($X^-$) excitons, and the PL spectrum probes the lifetimes and binding energies of these states rather than the original correlations of the 2DEG. At $d>2λ$, depending on the filling factor $ν$, the hole either decouples from the 2DEG to form an ``uncorrelated'' state $h$ or binds one or two Laughlin quasielectrons (QE) to form fractionally charged excitons $h$QE or $h$QE$_2$. The strict optical selection rules for bound states are formulated, and the only optically active ones turn out to be $h$, $h$QE* (an excited state of the dark $h$QE), and $h$QE$_2$. The ``anyon exciton'' $h$QE$_3$ suggested in earlier studies is neither stable nor radiative at any value of $d$. The critical dependence of the stability of different states on the presence of QE's in the 2DEG explains the observed anomalies in the PL spectrum at $ν={1\over3}$ and ${2\over3}$.

The energy spectrum of a two-dimensional electron gas (2DEG) in the fractional quantum Hall regime interacting with an optically injected valence band hole is studied as a function of the filling factor $ν$ and the separation $d$ between the electron and hole layers. The response of the 2DEG to the hole changes abruptly at $d$ of the order of the magnetic length $λ$. At $d<λ$, the hole binds electrons to form neutral ($X$) or charged ($X^-$) excitons, and the photoluminescence (PL) spectrum probes the lifetimes and binding energies of these states rather than the original correlations of the 2DEG. The ``dressed exciton'' picture (in which the interaction between an exciton and the 2DEG was proposed to merely enhance the exciton mass) is questioned. Instead, the low energy states are explained in terms of Laughlin correlations between the constituent fermions (electrons and $X^-$'s) and the formation of two-component incompressible fluid states in the electron--hole plasma. At $d>2λ$, the hole binds up to two Laughlin quasielectrons (QE) of the 2DEG to form fractionally charged excitons $h$QE$_n$. The previously found ``anyon exciton'' $h$QE$_3$ is shown to be unstable at any value of $d$. The critical dependence of the stability of different $h$QE$_n$ complexes on the presence of QE's in the 2DEG leads to the observed discontinuity of the PL spectrum at $ν={1\over3}$ or ${2\over3}$.

The mean field (MF) composite Fermion (CF) picture successfully predicts the band of low lying angular momentum multiplets of fractional quantum Hall systems for any value of the magnetic field. This success cannot be attributed to a cancellation between Coulomb and Chern--Simons interactions between fluctuations beyond the mean field. It results instead from the short range behavior of the Coulomb pseudopotential in the lowest Landau level (LL). The class of pseudopotentials for which the MFCF picture is successful can be defined, and used to explain the success or failure of the picture in different cases (e.g. excited LL's, charged magneto-excitons, and Laughlin quasiparticles in a CF hierarchy picture).

Abstract:
Low lying states of a 2D electron-hole system contain electrons and one or more types of charged excitonic complexes. Binding energies and angular momenta of these excitonic ions, and the pseudopotentials describing their interactions with electrons and with one another are obtained from numerical studies of small systems. Incompressible fluid ground states of such multi-component plasmas are fo…

Low lying states of a 2D electron-hole system contain electrons and one or more types of charged excitonic complexes. Binding energies and angular momenta of these excitonic ions, and the pseudopotentials describing their interactions with electrons and with one another are obtained from numerical studies of small systems. Incompressible fluid ground states of such multi-component plasmas are found in exact numerical diagonalizations. A generalized composite Fermion (CF) picture involving Chern--Simons charges and fluxes of different types is proposed and shown to predict the low lying states at any value of the magnetic field.

Abstract:
Two-dimensional systems containing Ne electrons and Nh holes (Ne>Nh) strongly correlated through Coulomb interactions in the presence of a large magnetic field are studied by exact numerical diagonalization. Low lying states are found to contain neutral (X0) and negatively charged (X-) excitons and higher charged exciton complexes (Xk-, a bound state of k neutral excitons and an electron). Repre…

Representing these states in terms of angular momenta and binding energies of the different exciton complexes, and the pseudopotentials describing their interactions with electrons and with one another, permits numerical studies of systems that are too large to investigate in terms of individual electrons and holes. Laughlin incompressible ground states of such a multi-component plasma are found. A generalized composite Fermion picture based on Laughlin type correlations is proposed. It is shown to correctly predict the lowest band of angular momentum multiplets for different charge configurations of the system for any value of the magnetic field.

Composite Fermions and the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect
Authors:
Arkadiusz Wojs,

Abstract:
The mean field (MF) composite Fermion (CF) picture successfully predicts low lying states of fractional quantum Hall systems. This success cannot be attributed to a cancellation between Coulomb and Chern-Simons interactions beyond the mean field and solely depends on the short range (SR) of the Coulomb pseudopotential in the lowest Landau level (LL). The class of pseudopotentials for which the M…

The class of pseudopotentials for which the MFCF picture can be applied is defined. The success or failure of the MFCF picture in various systems (electrons in excited LL's, Laughlin quasiparticles, charged magneto-excitons) is explained.
