Numerical ranges over a certain family of finite fields were classified in 2016 by a team including our fifth author. Soon afterward, in 2017 Ballico generalized these results to all finite fields and published some new results about the cardinality of the finite field numerical range. In this paper we study the geometry of these finite fields using the boundary generating curve, first introduced by Kippenhahn in 1951. We restrict our study to square matrices of dimension 2, with at least one eigenvalue in $\mathbb F_{q^2}$.

Abstract:
We find that conjugated polymers can undergo reversible structural phase transitions during electrochemical oxidation and ion injection. We study poly[2,5-bis(thiophenyl)-1,4-bis(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)benzene] (PB2T-TEG), a conjugated polymer with glycolated side chains. Using grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), we show that, in contrast to previously known polyme…

We find that conjugated polymers can undergo reversible structural phase transitions during electrochemical oxidation and ion injection. We study poly[2,5-bis(thiophenyl)-1,4-bis(2-(2-(2-methoxyethoxy)ethoxy)ethoxy)benzene] (PB2T-TEG), a conjugated polymer with glycolated side chains. Using grazing incidence wide angle X-ray scattering (GIWAXS), we show that, in contrast to previously known polymers, this polymer switches between two structurally distinct crystalline phases associated with electrochemical oxidation/reduction in an aqueous electrolyte. Importantly, we show that this unique phase change behavior has important physical consequences for ion transport. Notably, using moving front experiments visualized by both optical microscopy and super-resolution photoinduced force microscopy (PiFM), we show that a propagating ion front in PB2T-TEG exhibits non-Fickian transport, retaining a sharp step-edge profile, in stark contrast to the Fickian diffusion more commonly observed. This structural phase transition is reminiscent of those accompanying ion uptake in inorganic materials like LiFePO$_{4}$. We propose that engineering similar properties in future conjugated polymers may enable the realization of new materials with superior performance in electrochemical energy storage or neuromorphic memory applications.

We study statistical properties of the ensemble of large $N\times N$ random matrices whose entries $ H_{ij}$ decrease in a power-law fashion $H_{ij}\sim|i-j|^{-α}$. Map** the problem onto a nonlinear $σ-$model with non-local interaction, we find a transition from localized to extended states at $α=1$. At this critical value of $α$ the system exhibits multifractality and spectral statistics intermediate between the Wigner-Dyson and Poisson one. These features are reminiscent of those typical for the mobility edge of disordered conductors. We find a continuous set of critical theories at $α=1$, parametrized by the value of the coupling constant of the $σ-$model. At $α>1$ all states are expected to be localized with integrable power-law tails. At the same time, for $1<α<3/2$ the wave packet spreading at short time scale is superdiffusive: $\langle |r|\rangle\sim t^{\frac{1}{2α-1}}$, which leads to a modification of the Altshuler-Shklovskii behavior of the spectral correlation function. At $1/2<α<1$ the statistical properties of eigenstates are similar to those in a metallic sample in $d=(α-1/2)^{-1}$ dimensions. Finally, the region $α<1/2$ is equivalent to the corresponding Gaussian ensemble of random matrices $(α=0)$. The theoretical predictions are compared with results of numerical simulations.
