In this paper, we delve into the significance of local scale symmetry and the role of the associated noether current, within gravitational theories which are based in non-riemannian background space. Our focus is in Weyl and in Riemann-Cartan geometry based gravitational theories. We show that local scale symmetry is associated with vanishing noether current whenever there are not new propagating gravitational degrees of freedom beyond the two polarizations of the massless graviton. In contrast, in local scale invariant theories where there are more than two propagating gravitational degrees of freedom, local scale symmetry is associated with nonvanishing noether current. The known result that Weyl symmetry has vanishing noether current, is generalized to non-riemannian gravitational theories. An exception are the local scale invariant gravitational theories with vectorial nonmetricity, where the associated noether current is nonvanishing.

Building on the success of the Starobinsky model in describing the inflationary period of the universe, we investigate two simple generalizations of this model and their constraints imposed by the reheating epoch. The first generalization takes the form $R^{2p}$, while the second is the $α$-Starobinsky model. We first focus on the case where $p=1$ or equivalently, $α=1$, which corresponds to the original Starobinsky model. We derive exact consistency relations between observables and cosmological quantities, without neglecting any terms, and impose the reheating condition $0 < ω_{re} < 0.25$, where $ω_{re}$ is the equation of state parameter at the end of reheating. This allows us to obtain new bounds for $n_s$ and $r$ that satisfy this condition and apply them to other observables and cosmological quantities. We repeat this process for the cases where $p \neq 1$ and $α\neq 1$ and find that these generalizations only result in minor modifications of the Starobinsky model, including the potential and the bounds on observables and cosmological quantities.

Scalar fields are widely and popularly used in cosmology in order to explain different phenomena among which, inflation and dark energy are two of the most popular ones. Specifically, in recent years, scale invariance in the gravitational sector has gained interest due to its simplicity, ability to model inflation and the dynamical generation of the Planck scale. In this paper, motivated by a non minimally coupled scale invariant $R^{2}$ gravitational model originally proposed by M.Rinaldi and L. Vanzo, we investigate how the inclusion of a vector scalar interaction that respects the scale invariance of the original model may affect the early and late time dynamics. We employ dynamical analysis tools in order to find the fixed points of the system and the local solutions for each variable around each fixed point finding out that the early universe solution of the extended model is compatible with that found in the original model with the exception of a new unstable fixed point appearing in the extended model. This new fixed point however has the same linealized solutions as the unstable fixed point found for the original model. We later employ numerical calculations in order to check that the analytical approach holds. Furthermore we show how the dynamical generation of the Planck mass is unaffected by the new field content of the model. Finally, we motivate and investigate a reduced version of the extended model finding out that, at late times, the extended model has only stable de Sitter fixed points where the scalar field becomes constant taking the role of the cosmological constant and the vector field is washed out.

We present a simple procedure to obtain universal bounds for quantities of cosmological interest, such as the number of $e$-folds during inflation, reheating, and radiation, as well as the reheating temperature. The main assumption is to represent each of the various epochs of evolution of the universe as being due to a single substance changing instantaneously into the next, describing a new era of evolution of the universe. This assumption, commonly used to obtain solutions of the Friedmann equations for simple cosmological models, is implemented here to find model-independent bounds on cosmological quantities of interest. In particular, we find that the bound $N_k\approx 56$ for $-\frac{1}{3} < ω_{re} < \frac{1}{3}$ is very robust as an upper bound on the number of $e$-folds during inflation and also as a lower bound when $ω_{re} > \frac{1}{3}$, where $ω_{re}$ is the effective equation of state parameter during reheating. These are model-independent results that any single-field model of inflation should satisfy. As an example, we illustrate the two approaches with the basic $α$ attractor model and show how they complement each other.

In recent years, gravitational models motivated by quantum corrections to gravity which introduce higher order terms like $R^{2}$ or terms in which the Riemann tensor is not symmetric have been studied by several authors in the form of a general Brans-Dicke type model containing the Ricci scalar, the Holst term and the Nieh-Yan invariant. In this paper we focus on the less explored Jordan frame of such theories and in the comparison between both this frame and the Einstein one. Furthermore, we discuss the role of the transformation of the torsion under conformal transformations and show that the transformation proposed in this paper (extended conformal transformation) contains a special case of the projective transformation of the connection used in some of the papers that motivated this work. We discuss the role and advantages of the extended conformal transformation and show that this new approach can have interesting consequences by working with different variables such as the metric and torsion. Moreover, we study the stability of the system via a dynamical analysis in the Jordan frame, this in order to analyze whether or not we have the fixed points that can be later identified as the inflationary attractor and the unstable fixed point where inflation could take place. Finally we study the scale invariant case of the general model in the Jordan frame. We find out that both the scalar spectral index and the tensor-to-scalar ratio are in agreement with the latest Planck results.

There are important open questions like the question of antikaon nuclear bound states. A unique and rather direct experimental access to the antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths is provided by precision X-ray spectroscopy of transitions in low-lying states of light kaonic atoms like kaonic hydrogen isotopes. In the SIDDHARTA experiment at the electron-positron collider DAFNE of LNF-INFN we measured the most precise values of the strong interaction observables, i.e. the strong interaction on the 1s ground state of the electromagnetically bound kaonic hydrogen atom leading to a hadronic shift and a hadronic broadening of the 1s state. The SIDDHARTA result triggered new theoretical work which achieved major progress in the understanding of the low-energy strong interaction with strangeness. Antikaon-nucleon scattering lengths have been calculated constrained by the SIDDHARTA data on kaonic hydrogen. For the extraction of the isospin-dependent scattering lengths a measurement of the hadronic shift and width of kaonic deuterium is necessary. Therefore, new X-ray studies with the focus on kaonic deuterium are in preparation (SIDDHARTA2). Many improvements in the experimental setup will allow to measure kaonic deuterium which is challenging due to the anticipated low X-ray yield. Especially important are the data on the X-ray yields of kaonic deuterium extracted from a exploratory experiment within SIDDHARTA.

AMADEUS takes advantage of the DA$Φ$NE collider, which provides a unique source of monochromatic low-momentum kaons and exploits the KLOE detector as an active target, in order to obtain excellent acceptance and resolution data for $K^-$ nuclear capture on H, ${}^4$He, ${}^{9}$Be and ${}^{12}$C, both at-rest and in-flight. During the second half of 2012 a successful data taking was performed with a dedicated pure carbon target implemented in the central region of KLOE, providing a high statistic sample of pure at-rest $K^-$ nuclear interactions. To assess the role of the pairing interaction we apply the formalism to the case of a heavy atomic nucleus. We show that only a few statistical moments of the level distribution are sufficient to yield an accurate estimate of the energy for not too small values of the coupling $G$ and we give the analytic expressions of the first four terms of the series. Further, we discuss the convergence radius $G_{\rm sing}$ of the expansion showing that it strongly depends upon the details of the level distribution. Furthermore $G_{\rm sing}$ is not related to the critical values of the coupling $G_{\rm crit}$, which characterize the physics of the pairing Hamiltonian, since it can exist even in the absence of these critical points.

We address the problem of the bosonization of finite fermionic systems with two different approaches.
First we work in the path integral formalism, showing how a truly bosonic effective action can be derived from a generic fermionic one with a quartic interaction. We then apply our scheme to the pairing hamiltonian in the degenerate case proving that, in this instance, several of the features characterizing the spontaneous breaking of the global gauge symmetry U(1) occurring in the infinite system persist in the finite system as well.
Accordingly we interpret the excitations associated with the addition and removal of pairs of fermions as a quasi-Goldstone boson and the excitations corresponding to the breaking of a pair (seniority one states in the language of the pairing hamiltonian) as Higgs modes.
Second, we face the more involved problem of a non-degenerate single particle spectrum, where one more kind of excitations arises, corresponding to the promotion of pairs to higher levels. This we do by solving directly the Richardson equations. From this analysis the existence emerges of critical values of the coupling constant, which signal the transition between two regimes, one dominated by the mean field physics, the other by the pairing interaction.

We address the problem of two pairs of fermions living on an arbitrary number of single particle levels of a potential well (mean field) and interacting through a pairing force. The associated solutions of the Richardson's equations are classified in terms of a number $v_l$, which reduces to the seniority $v$ in the limit of large values of the pairing strength $G$ and yields the number of pairs not develo** a collective behaviour, their energy remaining finite in the $G\to\infty$ limit. We express analytically, through the moments of the single particle levels distribution, the collective mode energy and the two critical values $G_{\rm cr}^{+}$ and $G_{\rm cr}^{-}$ of the coupling which can exist on a single particle level with no pair degeneracy. Notably $G_{\rm cr}^{+}$ and $G_{\rm cr}^{-}$ merge when the number of single particle levels goes to infinity, where they coincide with the $G_{\rm cr}$ (when it exists) of a one pair system, not envisioned by the Richardson theory. In correspondence of $G_{\rm cr}$ the system undergoes a transition from a mean field to a pairing dominated regime. We finally explore the behaviour of the excitation energies, wave functions and pair transfer amplitudes finding out that the former, for $G>G_{\rm cr}^{-}$, come close to the BCS predictions, whereas the latter display a divergence at $G_{\rm cr}$, signaling the onset of a long range off-diagonal order in the system.

The problem of one pair of identical nucleons sitting in ${\cal N}$ single particle levels of a potential well and interacting through the pairing force is treated introducing, in the Hamiltonian formalism, even Grassmann variables. The eigenvectors are analytically expressed solely in terms of these with coefficients fixed by the eigenvalues and the single particle energies. For these a specific model is needed: in the case of the harmonic oscillator well, for any strength of the pairing interaction, an accurate expression is derived for both the collective eigenvalue and for those trapped in between the single particle levels. Notably the latter are labelled through an index upon which they depend parabolically.

Abstract:
The problem of the pairing interaction is dealt with even Grassmann variables in the hamiltonian framework. Eigenfunctions of given energy, seniority and zero third component of angular momentum are given in terms of single particle and collective bosonic fields.

Different Skyrme-type interactions corresponding to incompressibilities in the range 200 - 250 MeV are used. The results are discussed in comparison with existing data on isoscalar giant dipole resonances. Two main issues are raised, firstly the calculated giant resonance energies are somewhat higher than the observed ones, and secondly a sizable fraction of strength is predicted below 20 MeV which needs to be experimentally confirmed.

The pairing interaction among identical nucleons in a single-particle level is treated in the hamiltonian formalism using even Grassmann variables. A minimal (irreducible) basis having a remarkable symmetry property is set up using composite, commuting variables with a finite index of nilpotency. Eigenvalues and eigenfunctions of given energy, seniority and zero third component of the angular momentum of the pairing hamiltonian are then found. The eigenvectors, which cannot be cast solely in terms of composite bosons with angular momentum zero and two, are expanded in the minimal basis with coefficients analytically expressed in terms of a generalized hypergeometric function.

Abstract:
The isoscalar giant monopole resonances (ISGMR) and giant dipole resonances (ISGDR) in medium-heavy nuclei are investigated in the framework of HF+RPA and HF-BCS+QRPA with Skyrme effective interactions. It is found that pairing has little effect on these modes. It is also found that the coupling of the RPA states to 2p-2h configurations results in about (or less than) 1 MeV shifts of the resonan…

It is also found that the coupling of the RPA states to 2p-2h configurations results in about (or less than) 1 MeV shifts of the resonance energies and at the same time gives the correct total widths. For the ISGMR, comparison with recent data leads to a value of nuclear matter compression modulus close to 215 MeV. However, a discrepancy between calculated and measured energies of the ISGDR in $^{208}$Pb is found and remains an open problem.

The K-electron capture half-life of $^{123}$Te has been recently measured to be $t^K_{exp}=2.4\times 10^{19}$ yr, and constitutes the longest half-life ever measured in a single $β$-transition of any nuclear species. We have calculated this second unique forbidden transition within the framework of the proton-neutron quasi-particle random phase approximation, making use of Skyrme-type effective interactions. A strong cancellation effect between particle-hole and particle-particle correlations is found. The model, without any renormalization of the force, provides a lower limit for the K-electron capture half-life of $\sim 10^{17}$ yr, which unambiguously rules out the old experimental values of $10^{13} - 10^{14}$ yr. A few percent increase of the particle-particle matrix elements of the Skyrme interaction allows to reproduce the experimental findings.
