The discovery of superconductivity in hole-doped infinite layer nickelates, RNiO2 (R = Nd, Pr, La) has garnered sustained interest in the field. A definitive picture of low-energy many-body states has not yet emerged. We provide new insights into the low-energy physics, based on our embedded dynamical mean-field theory calculations, and propose a correlation (U)-temperature (T) phase diagram. The key features are a low-T Fermi liquid (FL) phase, a high-T Curie-Weiss regime, and an antiferromagnetic phase in a narrow U-T region. We associate the onset of the FL phase with partial screening of Ni-d moments; however, full screening occurs at lower temperatures. This may be related to insufficiency of conduction electrons to effectively screen the Ni-d moments, suggestive of Nozieres Exhaustion Principle. Our results suggest that RNiO2 are in the paramagnetic state, close to an antiferromagnetic dome, making magnetic fluctuations feasible. This may be consequential for superconductivity.

Advances in creating stable dipolar Bose systems, and ingenious box traps have generated tremendous interest. Theory study of dipolar bosons at finite temperature (T) has been limited. Motivated by these, we study 2D dipolar bosons at arbitrary tilt angle, $θ$, using finite-T random phase approximation. We show that a comprehensive understanding of phases and instabilities at non-zero T can be obtained on concurrently considering dipole strength, density, temperature and $θ$. We find the system to be in a homogeneous non-condensed phase that undergoes a collapse transition at large $θ$, and a finite momentum instability, signaling a striped phase, at large dipolar strength; there are important differences with the T=0 case. At T = 0, BEC appears at critical dipolar strength, and at critical density. Our predictions for polar molecule system, $^{41}K^{87}Rb$, and $^{166}Er$ may provide tests of our results. Our approach may apply broadly to systems with long-range, anisotropic interactions.

Experiments on rare-earth filled skutterudites demonstrate an intriguing array of thermodynamic, transport and superconducting properties, and bring to fore theoretical challenges posed by f-electron systems. First principle calculations based density functional theory and its extensions for strongly correlated systems such as the Hubbard U correction, provide valuable information about electronic structure that can be used to understand experiments. We present a comprehensive study of the electronic structure and Fermi surface of a series of rare earth filled skutterudites, RPt4Ge12 (where R = La, Ce, Pr), aimed at shedding light on: consequences of progressive increase of f-orbital occupancy in the series; the effects of the Hubbard parameter U; the Fermi surfaces, band structures and densities of states. The calculated Fermi surfaces may be relevant to the question of multi-band versus single-band superconductivity. Computed densities of states qualitatively explain the available resonant photoemission spectroscopy experiments, and (together with available specific heat measurements) provide estimates of the effective masses. We also show the existence of pseudogaps in the total density of states which may be relevant for the thermoelectric properties of these systems.

Recent experimental advances in creating stable dipolar bosonic systems, including polar molecules with large electric dipole moments, have led to vigorous theoretical activities. Recent reporting of observation of roton feature in dipolar erbium has provided added impetus to theoretical and experimental work. Here we discuss our mean-field theory work on 2D and quasi-2D dipolar bosons with dipoles oriented at an angle to the direction perpendicular to the confining 2D plane, i.e. for {\it non-zero tilt angles}. Using Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations, we present results on a number of T=0 properties of both 2D and quasi-2D systems, such as excitation spectra, structure functions, sound velocities, quantum depletion, etc. We explore instabilities at varying tilt angle, density and dipolar coupling. We map out phase diagrams as a function of tilt angle, dipole strength and density. We find the development of maxon-roton behavior leading to roton instabilities at large densities for small tilt angles, and at low densities for large tilt angles. The behavior is anisotropic in k-space; accordingly the roton instabilities occur first in the $k_y$ direction, suggestive of inhomogeneity and stripe phase, with density mode becoming soft in the $y$-direction. Beyond a critical tilt angle, at any density, the dipolar system collapses owing to a phonon instability. We discuss similarities and differences between the properties of 2D and quasi-2D dipolar systems at non-zero tilt angles.

Abstract:
We consider fermions on a 2D square lattice with a finite-range pairing interaction, and obtain signatures for unconventional pair-symmetry states, $d_{x^2-y^2}$ and extended-s ($s^*$), in the BCS-BEC crossover region. We find that the fermion momentum distribution function, $v_k^2$, the ratio of the Bogoliubov coefficients, $v_k/u_k$, and the Fourier transform of $v_k^2$ are strikingly different…

The chemical potential and the gaps functions for both pairing symmetries show several interesting features as a function of interaction. Fermionic atoms in 2D optical lattices may provide a way to test these signatures. We discuss current generation cold atom experiments that may be utilized.

Many-body effects may influence properties, such as scattering parameters, nature of pairing, etc., close to a Feshbach resonance in the fermion BEC-BCS crossover problem. We study effects such as these using a tractable crossing-symmetric approach. This method allow us to include quantum fluctuations, such as, density, current, spin, spin-current and the higher-order fluctuations in a self-consistent fashion. The underlying fermion interaction is reflected in the "driving" term. We perform calculations here on both Bose-Einstein condensate (BEC) and BCS sides, and taking the driving term to be finite range, and of arbitrary strength. These are related to two-body singlet and triplet scattering parameters, and can be connected with experimental s- and p-wave Feshbach resonances. We include the $\ell=0$ density and spin fluctuations, as well as $\ell=1$ current and spin-current fluctuations. We calculate renormalized scattering amplitudes, pairing amplitudes, nature of pairing, etc., on both the BEC and BCS sides. We then compare our results qualitatively with experiments.

We consider inter- and intra-species pairing interactions in an asymmetrical Fermi system. Using equation of motion method, we obtain coupled mean-field equations for superfluid gap functions and population densities. We construct a phase diagram across BCS-BEC regimes. Due to intra-species correlations, the BCS singlet superfluid state can sustain finite polarizations, $P$. For larger $P$, we find phase separations in BCS and BEC regimes. A superfluid phase exists for all $P$ deep in BEC regime. Our results may apply to pairing in ultracold fermions, nuclear and quark matter physics.
