In a recent paper [T. Shang et al., Phys. Rev. B 107, 224504 (2023)], the authors study the physical properties of TaReSi compounds having Ima2 structure. This noncentrosymmetric structure is proposed to be the source of topological properties for mentioned compound. However, for a correct description of topological features, it is important to recognize the correct structure of the compound at low temperature. In this Comment, we show that Ima2 cannot be realized by TaReSi and is unstable at low temperature. The Ima2 structure contains the soft modes at S (1/2,0,0) point, which leads to the stable structure with Cm symmetry. Notably, the stable Cm system also has a noncentrosymmetric structure, which can be the actual source of topological properties.

We present theoretical and experimental results exploring a half-Heusler compound TmPdSb with unusual band order and metallic surface states. Typically, the half-Heusler systems exhibit topological features in a semimetallic state, and trivial ones in an insulating state. Topological properties of the most of half-Heusler systems are related to the band inversion around the Fermi level, similar to this observed in CdTe/HgTe systems. In the case of TmPdSb we observed the gapped electronic band structure with ``band inversion'' in the conductance band, while the slab-like system realized metallic surface states. The bulk insulating nature of the compound was corroborated by means of electrical transport measurements. The experimental data revealed several features due to the presence of metallic surface states, such as linear magnetoresistance and weak-antilocalization effect, characterized by enhanced coherence length and a very large number of surface conductive channels. Our findings reveal new features of the rare-earth half-Heusler.

The LnSbTe (Ln = Lanthanides) family, like isostructural ZrSiS type compounds, has emerged as a fertile playground for exploring the interaction of electronic correlations and magnetic ordering with the nodal line band topology. Here, we report a detailed electronic band structure investigation of TbSbTe, corroborated by electrical transport, thermodynamic, and magnetic studies. Temperature-dependent magnetic susceptibility and thermodynamic transport studies indicate the onset of antiferromagnetic ordering below TN = 5.1 K. The electronic band structure study, carried out with high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) measurements aided with density functional theory based first-principles calculations reveals presence of nodal lines in the GammaX high symmetry direction, forming a diamond-shaped nodal plane around Gamma high symmetry point. A strongly photon energy dependent nodal feature located at the X point of the surface Brillouin zone, indicating an extended nodal line along X R direction, is also observed. This study elucidates the intricate interplay among symmetry-protected band characteristics, the influence of spin orbit coupling, magnetism, and topological properties.

In this paper, we report systematic high-resolution studies of its electronic structure using the angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) technique supported by the DFT calculation. The Fermi surface consists of four branches, of which the two inner ones are more 3-dimensional and the theoretical calculations reproduce well the experiment. We observe several linear dispersions forming Dirac-like structures. The nodal lines are present in the system along ${\text{M}}$-${\text{A}}$ and ${\text{X}}$-${\text{R}}$ and Dirac crossings along ${\text{X}}$-${\text{R}}$ are observed by ARPES. Finally, the nesting between external Fermi surface pockets, which corresponds to charge density wave (CDW) modulation vector is enhanced in LaCuSb$_{2}$ as compared to LaAgSb$_{2}$, while CDW appears in the latter system.

We present the pressure dependence of the electronic and dynamical properties of six different CoGe phases: orthorhombic Cmmm, hexagonal P6/mmm and P$\bar{6}$2m, monoclinic C2/m, cubic P2$_{1}$3, and orthorhombic Pnma. Using first-principles DFT calculations and the direct force-constants method, we study the dynamical stability of individual phases under external pressure. We show that the orthorombic Cmmm and hexagonal P6/mmm structures are unstable over a broad pressure range and most pronounced imaginary phonon soft mode in both cases leads to a stable hexagonal P$\bar{6}$2m structure of the lowest ground-state energy of all studied phases at ambient and low (below $\sim 3$ GPa) external pressure. Under these conditions, the cubic P2$_{1}$3 phase has the highest energy, however, together with monoclinic C2/m and orthorombic Pnma it is dynamically stable and all these three structures can potentially coexist as meta-stable phases. Above $\sim 3$ GPa, the cubic P2$_{1}$3 phase becomes the most energetically favorable. Fitting the Birch--Murnaghan equation of state we derive bulk modulus for all mentioned phases, which indicate relatively high resistance of CoGe to compression. Such conclusions are confirmed by band structure calculations. Additionally, we show that electronic bands of the hexagonal P$\bar{6}$2m phase reveal characteristic features of the kagome-like structure, while in the cubic P2$_{1}$3 phase spectrum, one can locate spin-1 and double Weyl fermions. In both cases, the external pressure induces the Lifshitz transition, related to the modification of the Fermi surface topology.

In this paper, we present a systematic investigation of the CDW origin in the context of the ab initio lattice dynamics study. Performing the group theory analysis of the mentioned soft mode, we found that the stable structure has the Immm symmetry and can be achieved by shifts of Ge atoms. Additionally, we show that the final structure realizes a distorted honeycomb Ge lattice as well as a non-flat kagome-like Fe net. For completeness, we present the electronic properties calculations. From the theoretical STM topography simulation, we indicate that the observed CDW occurs in the deformed honeycomb Ge sublattice.

We studied the electronic structure of a layered antiferromagnetic metal, EuSnP, in the paramagnetic and in the antiferromagnetic phase using angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) alongside density functional theory (DFT) based first principles calculations. The temperature dependence of the magnetic susceptibility measurements exhibits an antiferromagnetic transition at a Neel temperature of 21 K. Employing high resolution ARPES, the valence band structure was measured at several temperatures above and below the Neel temperature, which produced identical spectra independent of temperature. Through analysis of the ARPES results presented here, we attribute the temperature independent spectra to the weak coupling of the Sn, and P conduction electrons with Eu 4f states.

We report a transport study on Pd$_3$In$_7$ which displays multiple Dirac type-II nodes in its electronic dispersion. Pd$_3$In$_7$ is characterized by low residual resistivities and high mobilities, which are consistent with Dirac-like quasiparticles. For an applied magnetic field $(μ_{\text{0}} H)$ having a non-zero component along the electrical current, we find a large, positive, and linear in $μ_{\text{0}} H$ longitudinal magnetoresistivity (LMR). The sign of the LMR and its linear dependence deviate from the behavior reported for the chiral-anomaly-driven LMR in Weyl semimetals. Interestingly, such anomalous LMR is consistent with predictions for the role of the anomaly in type-II Weyl semimetals. In contrast, the transverse or conventional magnetoresistivity (CMR for electric fields $\textbf{E} \bot μ_{\text{0}} \textbf{H}$) is large and positive, increasing by $10^3-10^4$ \% as a function of $μ_{\text{0}}H$ while following an anomalous, angle-dependent power law $ρ_{\text{xx}}\propto (μ_{\text{0}}H)^n$ with $n(θ) \leq 1$. The order of magnitude of the CMR, and its anomalous power-law, is explained in terms of uncompensated electron and hole-like Fermi surfaces characterized by anisotropic carrier scattering likely due to the lack of Lorentz invariance.

Locally noncentrosymmetric CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$ exhibits characteristic two-phase unconventional $H$--$T$ superconducting phase diagram. The transition from even- to odd-parity superconducting phase is supported by the P4/nmm crystal structure and it can be induced by the external magnetic field. Dual nature of the Ce $f$ electrons and competition between their itinerant and localized nature can be important for its physical proprieties. The existing electronic band structure in this material is still under debate. Energy scale occurring in the system can be important for adequate theoretical description of its supercomputing properties. In this paper, we discuss electronic band structure obtained from {\it ab initio} calculations. We analyze electronic surface states which can be compared with recently obtained angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy measurement (ARPES). Additionally, we present the analyses of the hop** parameters obtained from the electronic band structure. The As-Rh layers are characterized by much more significant hop** parameters between atoms than these obtained for the Ce-Ce atoms. This suggests need of a revision of the tight binding model necessary for adequate description of the physical properties of CeRh$_{2}$As$_{2}$.

Half-Heusler systems host a plethora of different ground states, especially with non-trivial topology. However, there is still a lack of spectroscopic insight into the corresponding band inversion in this family. In this work, we locally explore the half-Heuslers Y$T$Bi ($T =$ Pt and Pd) by means of scanning tunneling microscopy/spectroscopy. From our analysis of the (120) surface plane, we infer that the increase of the spin--orbit coupling upon going from Pd to Pt is the main player in tuning the surface states from trivial to topologically non-trivial. Our measurements unveil a ($2 \times 1$) reconstruction of the (120) surface of both systems. Using density functional theory calculations, we show that the observed different behavior of the local density of states near the Fermi level in these two materials is directly related to the presence of metallic surface states. Our work sheds new light on a well known tunable family of materials and opens new routes to explore the presence of topological states of matter in half-Heusler systems and its microscopic observation.

Nodal line semimetals feature topologically protected band crossings between the bulk valence and conduction bands that extend along a finite dimension in the form of a line or a loop. While ZrSiS and similar materials have attracted extensive research as hosts for the nodal line semimetallic phase, an alternative avenue has emerged in the form of isostructural rare-earth (RE) based RESbTe materials. Such systems possess intriguing potentialities for harboring elements of magnetic ordering and electronic correlations owing to the presence of 4f electrons intrinsic to the RE elements. In this study, we have carried out angle resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and thermodynamic measurements in conjunction with first principles computations on PrSbTe to elucidate its electronic structure and topological characteristics. Magnetic and thermal characterizations indicate the presence of well-localized 4f states with the absence of any discernible phase transition down to 2 K. The ARPES results reveal the presence of gapless Dirac crossings that correspond to a nodal-line along the XR direction in the three-dimensional Brillouin zone. Furthermore, Dirac crossing that makes up nodal line, which forms a diamond-shaped nodal plane centered at the center of the Brillouin zone is also identified within the experimental resolution. This study on the electronic structure of PrSbTe contributes to the understanding of the pivotal role played by spin-orbit coupling in the context of the RESbTe family of materials

Motivated by this, we analyze the dynamical stability of the compound with these symmetries. Interestingly, our main result indicates that $\mathrm{AuSn_4}$ is unstable with both Aea2 and Ccca symmetries, due to the soft modes in the phonon spectra. We find that the $\mathrm{AuSn_4}$ can be stable with Pbcm at low temperatures using the soft mode analysis. Ruthenium oxide with the rutile structure is one of example of altermagnets. These systems are characterized by compensated magnetic moments (typical for antiferromagnets) and strong time reversal symmetry breaking (typical for ferromagnets). However, in such cases, the electronic band structure exhibit strong spin splitting along some directions in the momentum space. Occurrence of the compensated magnetic textures allows for realization of surfaces with specific magnetization, which dependent on the surface orientation and/or its termination. Here, we study interplay between the electronic surface states and the surface magnetization. We show that the spin-resolved spectra strongly depends on a direction in reciprocal space. Such properties can be used for the experimental confirmation of the altermagnetism in RuO$_{2}$ within the spectroscopic techniques. Additionally, we show that the most modified orbitals in the system are $d_{z^{2}}$ and $d_{xy}$ orbitals of Ru. Similarly, the Ru $e_{g}$ states are most sensitive on epitaxial strain, what can suggest some link between altermagnetism and strain.

The particles in the honeycomb lattice with on-site $s$-wave pairing exhibit many interesting behaviors, which can be described in the framework of the Hubbard model. Among others, at the half-filling, some critical value $|U_c|$ of pairing interaction $U<0$ exists that, for $U<U_c$, the superconducting phase becomes unstable. Introduction of the nonzero hop** $t'$ between next-nearest-neighbor sites strongly modifies the physical properties of the system. Here, we discuss the behavior of the system for $t' \neq 0$ (at the ground state), where the hop** between next-nearest neighbors leads to change of the order of phase transition between superconducting and normal phases from discontinuous to continuous one in the external magnetic field $h$. We show that this behavior is strongly dependent on $t'$ and associated with the Dirac cones in the non-interacting band structure of the system. For non-zero magnetic field and for some range of $t'$, a spin-polarized superconducting phase occurs in the ground state phase diagram (only at the half-filling and for $h\neq 0$).

We report magnetic and transport properties of single-crystalline EuZn$_{2}$P$_{2}$, which has trigonal CaAl$_2$Si$_2$-type crystal structure and orders antiferromagnetically at $\approx$23~K. Easy $ab$-plane magneto-crystalline anisotropy was confirmed from the magnetization isotherms, measured with a magnetic field applied along different crystallographic directions ($ab$-plane and $c$-axis). Positive Curie-Weiss temperature indicates dominating ferromagnetic correlations. Electrical resistivity displays insulating behavior with a band-gap of $\approx\,$0.177~eV, which decreases to $\approx\,$0.13~eV upon application of a high magnetic field. We explained the intriguing presence of magnetic interactions in an intermetallic insulator by the mechanism of extended superexchange, with phosphorus as an anion mediator, which is further supported by our analysis of the charge and spin density distributions. We constructed the effective Heisenberg model, with exchange parameters derived from the \textit{ab initio} DFT calculations, and employed it in Monte-Carlo simulations, which correctly reproduced the experimental value of Néel temperature.

The RTe3 (R = rare-earth elements) family of materials provides a fertile ground to study the dynamics of CDW in van der Waals layered materials, and the presence of magnetism in these materials allows to explore the interplay among CDW and long range magnetic ordering. Here, we have carried out a high-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) study of a CDW material GdTe3, which is antiferromagnetic below 12 K, along with thermodynamic, electrical transport, magnetic, and Raman measurements. Our Raman spectroscopy measurements show the presence of CDW amplitude mode at room temperature, which remains prominent when the sample is thinned down to 4-layers by exfoliation. Our ARPES data show a two-fold symmetric Fermi surface with both gapped and ungapped regions indicative of the partial nesting. The gap is momentum dependent, maximum along G-Z and gradually decreases going towards G - M. Our study provides a platform to study the dynamics of CDW and its interaction with other physical orders in two- and three-dimensions.

However, realization of materials possessing at bands near the Fermi level experimentally is very rare. Here, we report the experimental observation of flat bands in a weakly-correlated system YRu2Si2 employing angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) which is supported by first-principles calculations. These flat bands originate from Ru d orbitals and are found to be sensitive to the polarization of light. In addition, ARPES data revealed surface and bulk Dirac-like bands. The observed ARPES data is in excellent agreement with the density functional theory results. The presence of both flat bands and Dirac-like bands in YRu2Si2 suggest a unique synergy of correlation and topology in this material belonging to the centrosymmetric tetragonal ThCr2Si2-type structure thus establishing a new platform to investigate flat band physics in combination with non-trivial topological states in a weakly correlated system.

Recent experimental results confirmed the possibility of successfully synthesizing Pd$_{3}$Pb$_{2}Ch_{2}$ ($Ch$=S,Se) with the same structure. In this paper, we theoretically investigate the dynamical properties of such compounds. Furthermore, we study the possibility of realizing Pt$_{3}$Pb$_{2}Ch_{2}$ with the shandite structure. We show that the Pd$_{3}$Pb$_{2}${\it Ch}$_{2}$ and Pt$_{3}$Pb$_{2}$S$_{2}$ are stable with R$\bar{3}$m symmetry. In the case of Pt$_{3}$Pb$_{2}$S$_{2}$, there is a soft mode, which is the source of the structural phase transition from R$\bar{3}$m to R$\bar{3}$c symmetry, related to the distortion within the kagome sublattice. We discuss realized phonon nodal lines in the bulk phonon dispersions in upper frequency modes. We show that the shandite structure can host the phonon surface states, with strong dependence by the surface kind. Additionally, chiral phonons with circular motion of the Pb atoms around the equilibrium position are realized.

This indicates the crucial role played by the $f$ electrons on the electronic structure and the pairing mechanism of infinite-layer nickelates. Here we discuss the role of the electron correlations on the $f$ electron states and their influence on the electronic structure. We show that the lattice parameters are in good agreement with the experimental values, independent of the chosen parameters within the DFT+$U$ approach. Increasing Coulomb interaction $U$ tends to shift the $f$ states away from the Fermi level. Surprisingly, independently of the position of $f$ states with respect to the Fermi energy, these states play an important role in the electronic band structure, which can be reflected in the modification of the NdNiO$_{2}$ effective models.

Recent studies suggested realization of P$\bar{6}$2m or Ima2 symmetry. We discuss the dynamical properties of both symmetries (e.g., phonon spectra). In this paper, using the ab initio techniques, we clarify this ambiguity, and conclude that the Ima2 symmetry is unstable, and P$\bar{6}$2m should be realized. The P$\bar{6}$2m symmetry is also stable in the presence of external hydrostatic pressure. We show that NbReSi with the P$\bar{6}$2m symmetry should host phonon surface states for (100) and (110) surfaces. Iron-based superconductors, with the ThCr$_{2}$Si$_{2}$-type tetragonal structure (122 family), due to the iron arsenide/selenide layers exhibit several characteristic electronic properties. For example, multiband character mosty associated with the $d$-orbitals of iron and the quasi-two-dimensional (2D) cylindrical Fermi surface. Moreover, external hydrostatic pressure leads to the isostructural phase transition from the tetragonal to collapsed-tetragonal phase. In this paper, in relation to the iron-based superconductors, we discuss the electronic properties of novel 122-family member RbNi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ [Liu H. et al., Phys. Rev. B 106, 094511 (2022)]. We show that the two Fermi pockets exhibit quasi-2D character. Calculation of the surface spectral function for the (001) surface shows that the surface states are realized independently on the surface termination. Additionally, contrary to the iron-based 122 compounds, RbNi$_{2}$Se$_{2}$ exhibits extraordinary multiple isostructural phase transitions under pressure. Moreover, the Lifshizt transition occurs under external pressure, which results into a strong modification of the shapes of the Fermi pockets.

Lanthanide (Ln) based systems in the ZrSiS-type nodal-line semimetals have been subjects of research investigations as grounds for studying the interplay of topology with possible magnetic ordering and electronic correlations that may originate from the presence of Ln 4f electrons. In this study, we carried out a thorough study of a LnSbTe system - NdSbTe - by using angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy along with first-principles calculations and thermodynamic measurements. We experimentally detect the presence of multiple gapless nodal-line states, which is well supported by first-principles calculations. A dispersive and an almost non-dispersive nodal-line exist along the bulk X-R direction. Another nodal-line is present well below the Fermi level across the G- M direction, which is formed by bands with high Fermi velocity that seem to be sensitive to light polarization. Our study provides an insight into the electronic structure of a new LnSbTe material system that will aid towards understanding the connection of Ln elements with topological electronic structure in these systems.

$A$B$_{2}$ ($A=$K, Rb, Cs) compounds crystallize in the cubic Laves phase (symmetry Fd$\bar{3}$m). The geometry of the crystal structure allows the realization of chiral phonons, which are associated with the circulation of atoms around their equilibrium positions. Due to the inversion symmetry and time reversal symmetry, total pseudo-angular momentum (PAM) of the system vanishes. We show that the do** of these system can lead to a new phase with symmetry F$\bar{4}3$m. New systems (KRbBi$_{4}$ and RbCsBi$_{4}$) do not exhibit soft modes (are stable dynamically). Due to the inversion symmetry breaking, realized chiral phonon modes posses a non-zero total PAM. In both type of systems the chiral phonons are realized for the wavectors at the edge of the Brillouine zone. This study explores the possibility of chiral phonon engineering via do**, and predicts two new materials. Discussing the problem opens a new way to study the phonon Hall effect.

In this paper, we discuss the case when the potential is smeared at one end of the system. In our investigation, we assume the smearing in form of a quadratic function of position. We show that the smearing potential lead to the emergence of extra in-gap states, and effectively decrease the local gap (around the smeared potential). The Majorana states are still preserved in the system, however, their localization depend on the smearing. Moreover, the symmetric localization of the Majorana states from both side of the system is no longer preserved in the presence of the smearing potential.

Previous ARPES results suggest the existence of the Dirac-cone-like structure in the vicinity of the Fermi level along the $Γ$-M direction [X. Shi et al., Phys. Rev. B 93, 081105(R) (2016)]. This paper is devoted to a complex analysis of the electronic band structure of LaAgSb$_{2}$ by means of angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and theoretical calculations within the direct ab initio method as well as tight binding model formulation. To investigate the possible surface states we performed the direct DFT slab calculation and the surface Green function calculation for the (001) surface. The appearance of the surface states, which depends strongly on surface, points to the conclusion that LaSb termination is realized in the cleaved crystals. Moreover, the surface states predicted by our calculations at the $Γ$ and $X$ points are found by ARPES. Nodal lines, which exist along X--R and M-A path due to crystal symmetry, are also observed experimentally. The calculations reveal another nodal lines, which originate from vanishing of spin-orbit coupling and are located at X-M-A-R plane at the Brillouin zone boundary. In addition, we analyze band structure along the $Γ$-M path to verify, whether Dirac surface states can be expected. Their appearance in this region is not confirmed.

Magnetic impurities placed in the superconductor can lead to emergence of the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov bound states. Coupling between the impurity and the substrate depends on density of states (DOS) at the Fermi level and can be tuned by DOS singularities. In this paper, we study the role of DOS singularities using the real space Bogoliubov-de Gennes equations for chosen lattice models. To uncover the role of these singularities (Dirac point, van Hove singularity, or the flat band), we study honeycomb, kagome, and Lieb lattices. We show that the properties of the Shiba state strongly depends on the type of lattice. Nevertheless some behaviors are generic, e.g. dependence of the critical magnetic coupling on the DOS at the Fermi level. However, the Shiba states realized in the Lieb lattice exhibit extraordinary properties, which can be explained by the presence of a few nonequivalent sublattices. Depending on the location of the magnetic impurity in the chosen sublattice, the value of critical magnetic coupling $J_\text{c}$ can be reduced or enhanced when the flat band is located at the Fermi level. In this context, we also present differences in the local DOS and coherence lengths for different sublattices in the Lieb lattice.

Binary compounds $A$Bi ($A$ = K, Rb, Cs) crystallize in P2$_1$/c structure containing both clockwise and anticlockwise chiral chains of Bi atoms. Electronic band structure exhibits the insulating nature of these systems, with the band gap about $0.25$ eV. The presented study of dynamical properties confirm a stability of the system with P2$_1$/c symmetry. The crystal structure contains the quasi-one-dimensional Bi chains, exhibiting four-fold-like rotational ``local'' symmetry. Nevertheless, the system formally posses two-fold rotational symmetry. Independently of the absence of the three-fold (or higher) rotational symmetry axes for the whole crystal, the chiral modes propagate along the Bi atom chains in these systems. We discuss basic properties of these modes in monoatomic chiral chains. We show that the two-fold rotational symmetry axis affects the main properties of the chiral phonons, which are not realized at the high-symmetry points, but along some paths between them in the reciprocal space. In addition, in the doped system, the chiral phonons possess non-zero total angular momentum.

The band structure of noninteracting fermions in the honeycomb lattice exhibits the Dirac cones at the corners of the Brillouin zone. As a consequence, fermions in this lattice manifest a semiconducting behavior below some critical value of the onsite attraction, $U_{c}$. However, above $U_{c}$, the superconducting phase can occur. We discuss an interplay between the semiconductor--superconductor transition and the possibility of realization of the spin-polarized superconductivity (the so-called Sarma phase). We show that the critical interaction can be tuned by the next-nearest-neighbor (NNN) hop** in the absence of the magnetic field. Moreover, a critical value of the NNN hop** exists, defining a range of parameters for which the semiconducting phase can emerge. In the weak coupling limit case, this quantum phase transition occurs for the absolute value of the NNN hop** equal to one third of the hop** between the nearest neighbors. Similarly, in the presence of the magnetic field, the Sarma phase can appear, but only in a range of parameters for which initially the semiconducting state is observed. Both of these aspects are attributed to the Lifshitz transition, which is induced by the NNN hop** as well as the external magnetic field.

Here, the coexistence of the charge density wave (CDW) and superconductivity is observed. In this paper, we study the dynamic properties of the $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ systems in context of origin of the CDW phase. We show and discuss the structural phase transition from $P6/mmm$ to $C2/m$ symmetry that are induced by the presence of phonon soft modes. We conclude that the CDW observed in this family of compounds is a consequence of the atom displacement, from the high symmetry position of the kagome net, in low-temperature phase. Additionally, using the numerical {\it ab initio} methods, we discuss the charge distribution on the $A$V$_{3}$Sb$_{5}$ surface. We show that the observed experimental %$4\times 1$ stripe-like modulation of the surface, can be related to surface reconstruction and manifestation of the three dimensional $2 \times 2 \times 2$ bulk CDW. Finally, the consequence of realization of the $C2/m$ structure on the electronic properties are discussed. Hexagonal and kagome lattices exhibit extraordinary electronic properties. It is a natural consequence of additional discrete degree of freedom associated with a valley or the occurence of electronic flat-bands. Combination of both types of lattices, observed in CoSn-like compounds, leads not only to the topological electronic behavior, but also to the emergence of chiral phonon modes. Here, we study CoSn-like compounds in the context of realization of chiral phonons. Previous theoretical studies demonstrated that the chiral phonons can be found in ideal two-dimensional hexagonal or kagome lattices. However, it turns out that in the case of CoSn-like systems with the $P6/mmm$ symmetry, the kagome lattice formed by $d$-block element is decorated by the additional $p$-block atom. This results in a two dimensional triangular lattice of atoms with non-equal masses and the absence of chiral phonons in the kagome plane. Contrary to this, the interlayer hexagonal lattice of $p$-block atoms is preserved and allows for the realization of chiral phonons. We discuss properties of these chiral phonons in seven CoSn-like compounds and demonstrate that they do not depend on atomic mass ratio or the presence of intrinsic magnetic order. The chiral phonons of $d$-block atoms can be restored by removing the inversion symmetry. The latter is possible in the crystal structure of CoGe and RhPb with the reduced symmetry ($P\bar{6}2m$) and distorted-kagome-like lattice.

Self-organized silicide nanowires are considered as main building blocks of future nanoelectronics and have been intensively investigated. In nanostructures, the lattice vibrational waves (phonons) deviate drastically from those in bulk crystals, which gives rise to anomalies in thermodynamic, elastic, electronic, and magnetic properties. Hence, a thorough understanding of the physical properties of these materials requires a comprehensive investigation of the lattice dynamics as a function of the nanowire size. We performed a systematic lattice dynamics study of endotaxial FeSi$_2$ nanowires, forming the metastable, surface-stabilized $α$-phase, which are in-plane embedded into the Si(110) surface. The average widths of the nanowires ranged from 24 to 3 nm, their lengths ranged from several $μ$m to about 100 nm. The Fe-partial phonon density of states, obtained by nuclear inelastic scattering, exhibits a broadening of the spectral features with decreasing nanowire width. The experimental data obtained along and across the nanowires unveiled a pronounced vibrational anisotropy that originates from the specific orientation of the tetragonal $α$-FeSi$_2$ unit cell on the Si(110) surface. The results from first-principles calculations are fully consistent with the experimental data and allow for a comprehensive understanding of the lattice dynamics of endotaxial silicide nanowires.

Topological insulators are characterized by the existence of band inversion and the possibility of the realization of surface states. Do** with a magnetic atom, which is a source of the time-reversal symmetry breaking, can lead to realization of novel magneto-electronic properties of the system. In this paper, we study effects of substitution by the transition metal ions (Mn, Fe, Co and Ni) into Bi$_{2}$Se$_{3}$ on its electric properties. Using the ab inito supercell technique, we investigate the density of states and the projected band structure. Under such substitution the shift of the Fermi level is observed. We find the existence of nearly dispersionless bands around the Fermi level associated with substituted atoms, especially, in the case of the Co and Ni. Additionally, we discuss the modification of the electron localization function as well as charge and spin redistribution in the system. The results are also discussed in the context of the interplay between energy levels of the magnetic impurities and topological surface states.

The interplay between superconductivity, magnetic field and spin-orbit coupling can lead to the realization of non--trivial topological phases. Recent experiments have found signatures of such phases in magnetic nanoflakes formed by nanostructures coupled to a superconducting substrate. These heterostructures comprise a topologically non-trivial region surrounded by a trivial one due to the finite magnetic exchange field induced by the magnetic nanoflake. The analysis of the topological phase diagram of such a system shows that a similar phase separation occurs by tuning the chemical potential of the nanoflake. In this paper, we study such a possibility in detail, analyzing the spatial extent of the edge modes circulating around the nanoflake and discussing some practical implementations. We also show how the chirality of Majorana edge states can be probed using scanning tunneling spectroscopy with a double tip setup.

Theoretical studies have shown that Majorana bound states can be induced at the ends of a one dimensional wire, a phenomenon possible due to the interplay between s-wave superconductivity, spin-orbit coupling, and an external magnetic field. These states have been observed in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid nanostructures in the presence of a Zeeman field, and in the limit of a low density of particles. In this paper, we demonstrate and discuss the possibility of the emergence of Majorana bound states in a superconducting Rashba nanowire deposited on an antiferromagnetically ordered surface. We calculate the relevant topological invariant in several complementary ways. Studying the topological phase diagram reveals two branches of the non trivial topological phase -- a main branch, which is typical for Rashba nanowires, and an additional branch emerging due to the antiferromagnetic order. In the case of the additional topological branch, Majorana bound states can also exist close to half-filling, obviating the need for either do** or gating the nanowire to reach the low density regime. Moreover, we show the emergence of the Majorana bound states in the absence of the external magnetic field, which is possible due to the antiferromagnetic order. We also discuss the properties of the bound states in the context of real space localization and the spectral function of the system. This allows one to perceive the band inversion within the spin and sublattice subspaces in the additional branch, contrary to the main branch, where the only band inversion reported in previous studies exists in the spin subspace. Finally, we demonstrate how these topological phases can be confirmed experimentally in transport measurements.

We use the density functional theory and lattice dynamics calculations to investigate the properties of potassium superoxide KO$_2$ in which spin, orbital, and lattice degrees of freedom are interrelated and determine the low-temperature phase. After calculating phonon dispersion relations in the high-temperature tetragonal $I4/mmm$ structure, we identify a soft phonon mode leading to the monoclinic $C2/c$ symmetry and optimize the crystal geometry resulting from this mode. Thus we reveal a displacive character of the structural transition with the group-subgroup relation between the tetragonal and monoclinic phases. We compare the electronic structure of KO$_2$ with antiferromagnetic spin order in the tetragonal and monoclinic phases. We emphasize that realistic treatment of the electronic structure requires including the local Coulomb interaction $U$ in the valence orbitals of the O$^-_2$ ions. The presence of the `Hubbard' $U$ leads to the gap opening at the Fermi energy in the tetragonal structure without orbital order but with weak spin-orbit interaction. We remark that the gap opening in the tetragonal phase could also be obtained when the orbital order is initiated in the calculations with a realistic value of $U$. Finally, we show that the local Coulomb interactions and the finite lattice distortion, which together lead to the orbital order via the Jahn-Teller effect, are responsible for the enhanced insulating gap in the monoclinic structure.

Low dimensional structures in the non-trivial topological phase can host the in-gap Majorana bound states, identified experimentally as zero-bias peaks in differential conductance. Theoretical methods for studying Majorana modes are mostly based on the bulk-boundary correspondence or exact diagonalization of finite systems via, e.g., Bogoliubov-de Gennes formalism. In this paper, we develop an efficient method for identifying the Majorana in-gap (edge) states via looking for extreme eigenvalues of symmetric matrices. The presented approach is based on the Krylov method and allows for study the spatial profile of the modes as well as the spectrum of the system. The advantage of this method is the calculation cost, which shows linear dependence on the number of lattice sites. The latter problem may be solved for very large clusters of arbitrary shape/geometry. In order to demonstrate the efficiency of our approach, we study two- and three-dimensional clusters described by the Kitaev and Rashba models for which we determine the number of Majorana modes and calculate their spatial structures. Additionally, we discuss the impact of the system size on the physical properties of the topological phase of the magnetic nanoisland deposited on the superconducting surface. In this case, we have shown that the eigenvalues of the in-gap states depend on the length of the system edge.

Experimental verifications of said concept has already been executed, e.g., in superconductor/semiconductor nanowire devices where interplay between superconducting gap, spin-orbit coupling and external magnetic field allows for creation of zero-energy bound states. Recent experiments propose a topological phase diagram by local modification of the effective chemical potential. We discuss this possibility, using a model of experimental system in form of semi-infinite S/N junction. We calculate the zero--bias differential conductance $G$ in the case of the homogeneous system, as well as in the presence of the gate voltage. Relation between conductance and the effective gap in the system is investigated. We show that $G$ can reproduce the topological phase diagram in magnetic field vs. gate voltage space of parameters.

We show anomalous features of Majorana Bound State leakage in the situation where topological Rashba nanowire is dimerized according to the Su-Schrieffer-Heeger (SSH) scenario and an impurity is present at one of the ends of the system. We find that two topological branches: usual, indigenous to Rashba nanowire and dimerized one, existing as a result of SSH dimerization of nanowire, have different asymmetry of spin polarization that can be explained by opposite order of bands taking part in topological transitions. Additionally, introduction of an impurity to the dimerized nanowire influences the leakage of Majorana bound states into the trivial impurity, due to the emergence of Andreev bound states that behave differently whether the system is or is not in topological phase. This results in the pinning of zero energy states to the impurity site for some range of parameters.

We determined the lattice dynamics of metastable, surface-stabilized $α$-phase FeSi$_2$ nanoislands epitaxially grown on the Si(111) surface with average heights and widths ranging from 1.5 to 20 nm and 18 to 72 nm, respectively. The crystallographic orientation, surface morphology and local crystal structure of the nanoislands were investigated by reflection high-energy electron diffraction, atomic force microscopy and X-ray absorption spectroscopy. The Fe-partial phonon density of states (PDOS), obtained by nuclear inelastic scattering, exhibits a pronounced dam** and broadening of the spectral features with decreasing average island height. First-principles calculations of the polarization-projected Si- and Fe-partial phonon dispersions and PDOS enable the disentanglement of the contribution of the $xy$- and $z$-polarized phonons to the experimental PDOS. Modeling of the experimental data with the theoretical results unveils an enhanced dam** of the $z$-polarized phonons for islands with average sizes below 10 nm. This phenomenon is attributed to the fact that the low-energy $z$-polarized phonons couple to the low-energy surface/interface vibrational modes. The thermodynamic and elastic properties obtained from the experimental data show a pronounced size-dependent behavior.

Recent experiments have shown the signatures of Majorana bound states at the ends of magnetic chains deposited on a superconducting substrate. Here, we employ first principles calculations to directly investigate the topological properties of $3d$ transition metal nanochains (i.e., Mn, Cr, Fe and Co). In contrast to the previous studies [Nadj-Perge et al. Science 346, 602 (2014) and Ruby et al. Nano Lett. 17, 4473 (2017)], we found the exact tight binding models in the Wannier orbital basis for the isolated chains as well as for the surface--deposited wires. Based on these models, we calculate topological invariant of $\mathbb{Z}_2$ phase for all systems. Our results for the isolated chains demonstrate the existence of the topological phase only in the Mn and Co systems. We considered also a non-collinear magnetic order as a source of the non--trivial topological phase and found that this type of magnetic order is not a stable ground state in the Fe and Co isolated chains. Further studies showed that a coupling between the chain and substrate leads to strong modification of the band structure. Moreover, the analysis of the topological invariant indicates a possibility of emergence of the topological phase in all studied nanochains deposited on the Pb surface. Therefore, our results demonstrate an important role of the coupling between deposited atoms and a substrate for topological properties of nanosystems.

It induces an orthorhombic distortion to a crystal structure described by the space group $F222$ which hosts the superconducting state. This new phase has a lower total energy than the other known crystal structures of Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$. Comprehensive temperature dependent Raman scattering experiments on isotope enriched samples, $^{116}$Cd$_2$Re$_2{^{18}}$O$_7$, not only confirm the already known structural phase transitions but also allow us to identify a new characteristic temperature regime around $\sim 80$ K, below which the Raman spectra undergo remarkable changes with the development of several sharp modes and mode splitting. Together with the results of the \textit{ab initio} phonon calculations we take these observations as strong evidence for another phase transition to a novel low-temperature crystal structure of Cd$_2$Re$_2$O$_7$.

We also discuss the role of long-range interactions on the Majorana state's spatial structure, and the overlap of the Majorana states localized at opposite ends of the chain. We have determined that increasing the interaction strength leads to decreasing of the stability of the Majorana modes. Moreover, we found out that interaction between particles located at more distant sites plays a more destructive role than the interaction between nearest neighbors.

The electronic band structure and crystal parameters were optimized within the density functional theory. The spin-orbit coupling leads to the splitting of the electronic bands and Fermi surfaces, with the stronger effect observed for the compounds with the heavier atoms Ir and Pt. The possible mixing of the spin-singlet and spin-triplet pairing in the superconducting state is discussed. The phonon dispersion relations and phonon density of states were obtained using the direct method. The dispersion curves in ThCoSi and ThIrSi exhibit the low-energy modes along the S-N-S0 line with the tendency for softening and dynamic instability. Additionally, we calculate and analyse the contributions of phonon modes to lattice heat capacity.

The structure and dynamical properties of the Fe$_3$Si/GaAs(001) interface are investigated by density functional theory and nuclear inelastic scattering measurements. The stability of four different atomic configurations of the Fe$_3$Si/GaAs multilayers is analyzed by calculating the formation energies and phonon dispersion curves. The differences in charge density, magnetization, and electronic density of states between the configurations are examined. Our calculations unveil that magnetic moments of the Fe atoms tend to align in a plane parallel to the interface, along the [110] direction of the Fe$_3$Si crystallographic unit cell. In some configurations, the spin polarization of interface layers is larger than that of bulk Fe$_3$Si. The effect of the interface on element-specific and layer-resolved phonon density of states is discussed. The Fe-partial phonon density of states measured for the Fe$_3$Si layer thickness of three monolayers is compared with theoretical results obtained for each interface atomic configuration. The best agreement is found for one of the configurations with a mixed Fe-Si interface layer, which reproduces the anomalous enhancement of the phonon density of states below 10 meV

Ultracold fermionic gases in optical lattices give a great opportunity for creating different types of novel states. One of them is phase separation induced by a trap** potential between different types of superfluid phases. The core-shell structures, occurring in systems with a trap** potential, are a good example of such separations. The types and the sequences of phases which emerge in such structures can depend on spin-imbalance, shape of the trap and on-site interaction strength. In this work, we investigate the properties of such structures within an attractive Fermi gas loaded in the optical lattice, in the presence of the trap** potential and their relations to the phase diagram of the homogeneous system. Moreover, we show how external and internal parameters of the system and parameters of the trap influence their properties. In particular, we show a possible occurrence of the core-shell structure in a system with a harmonic trap, containing the BCS and FFLO states. Additionally, we find a spatial separation of two superfuild states in the system, one in the BCS limit as well as the other one in the tightly bound local pairs (BEC) regime.
