A common property of globular clusters (GC) is to host multiple populations characterized by peculiar chemical abundances. Recent photometric studies suggest that the He content could vary between the populations of a GC by up to $Δ$He $\sim$ 0.13, in mass fraction. The initial He content impacts the evolution of low-mass stars by ultimately modifying their lifetimes, luminosity, temperatures, and, more generally, the morphology of post-RGB evolutionary tracks in the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram. We present new physically accurate isochrones with different initial He-enrichments and metallicities, with a focus on the methods implemented to deal with the post-RGB phases. The isochrones are based on tracks computed with the stellar evolution code STAREVOL for different metallicities (Z = 0.0002, 0.0009, 0.002, and 0.008) and with different He-enrichment (from 0.25 to 0.6 in mass fraction). We describe the effect of He-enrichment on the morphology of the isochrones and test these by comparing the predicted number counts of HB and AGB stars with those of selected GCs. Comparing the number ratios, we find that our new theoretical ones agree with the observed values within $1σ$ in most cases. The work presented here sets the ground for future studies on stellar populations in globular clusters, in which the abundances of light elements in He-enhanced models will rely on different assumptions for the causes of this enrichment. The developed methodology permits the computation of isochrones from new stellar tracks with non-canonical stellar processes. The checked number counts ensure that, at least in this reference set, the contribution of the luminous late stages of stellar evolution to the integrated light of a GC is represented adequately.

We present a comprehensive photometric study of RR Lyrae stars in the M3 globular cluster, utilising a vast dataset of 3140 optical ($UBVRI$) CCD images spanning 35 years from astronomical data archives. We have successfully identified previously known 238 RR Lyrae stars from the photometric data, comprising 178 RRab, 49 RRc, and 11 RRd stars. Multi-band periodogram was used to significantly improve the long-term periods of $65\%$ of RR Lyrae stars in our sample, thanks to the unprecedentedly long temporal coverage of the observations. The light curve templates were used to obtain accurate and precise mean magnitudes and amplitudes of all RR Lyrae variables. We combined optical ($UBVRI$) and near-infrared (NIR, $JHK_{s}$) photometry of RR Lyrae variables to investigate their location in the colour-magnitude diagrams as well as the pulsation properties such as period distributions, Bailey diagrams and amplitude ratios. The Period-Luminosity relations in $R$ and $I$ bands and Period-Wesenheit relations were derived after excluding outliers identified in CMDs. The Period-Wesenheit relations calibrated via the theoretically predicted relations were used to determine a distance modulus of $μ= 15.04 \pm 0.04 \,{\rm (stats)} \pm 0.19 \,{\rm {(syst.)}}$ mag (using metal-independent $W_{BV}$ Wesenheit) and $μ= 15.03 \pm 0.04 \,{\rm (stats)} \pm 0.17 \,{\rm {(syst.)}}$ mag (using metal-dependent $W_{VI}$ Wesenheit). Our distance measurements are in excellent agreement with published distances to M3 in the literature. We also employed an artificial neural network based comparison of theoretical and observed light curves to determine physical parameters (mass, luminosity, and effective temperature) for $79$ non-Blazhko RRab stars that agree with limited literature measurements.

Most Galactic Globular Clusters (GCs) harbour multiple populations of stars (MPs), composed of at least two generations: the first characterized by a "standard" $α$-enhanced metal mixture, as observed in field halo stars of the Milky Way, and the second displaying anti-correlated CN--ONa chemical abundance pattern in combination with an enhanced helium fraction. Adequate collections of stellar spectra are needed to characterize the effect of such stellar abundance changes on the integrated light of GCs. We present a grid of synthetic stellar spectra covering the atmospheric parameters relevant to old stellar populations at four subsolar metallicities and two abundance patterns, representative of first- and second-generations of stars in GCs. Integrated spectra of populations were computed using our stellar grid and empirical stellar populations, namely, colour-magnitude diagrams from literature for Galactic GCs. The spectra range from 290 to 1000nm, where we measured the effect on several spectrophotometric indices due to the surface abundance variations attributed to MPs. We find non-negligible effects of the MPs on spectroscopic indices sensitive to C, N, Ca, or Na, and on Balmer indices; we also describe how MPs modify specific regions in the near-UV and near-IR that can be measured with narrow or medium photometric passbands. The effects vary with metallicity. A number of these changes remain detectable even when accounting for the stochastic fluctuations due to the finite nature of the stellar population cluster.

We present a new technique to generate the light curves of RRab stars in different photometric bands ($I$ and $V$ bands) using Artificial Neural Networks (ANN). A pre-computed grid of models was used to train the ANN, and the architecture was tuned using the $I$ band light curves. The best-performing network was adopted to make the final interpolators in the $I$ and $V$ bands. The trained interpolators were used to predict the light curve of RRab stars in the Magellanic Clouds, and the distances to the LMC and SMC were determined based on the reddening independent Wesenheit index. The estimated distances are in good agreement with the literature. The comparison of the predicted and observed amplitudes, and Fourier amplitude ratios showed good agreement, but the Fourier phase parameters displayed a few discrepancies. To showcase the utility of the interpolators, the light curve of the RRab star EZ Cnc was generated and compared with the observed light curve from the Kepler mission. The reported distance to EZ Cnc was found to be in excellent agreement with the updated parallax measurement from Gaia EDR3. Our ANN interpolator provides a fast and efficient technique to generate a smooth grid of model light curves for a wide range of physical parameters, which is computationally expensive and time-consuming using stellar pulsation codes.

The metallicity spread, or the metallicity trend along the evolutionary sequence of a globular cluster, is a rich source of information to help understand the cluster physics (e.g. multiple populations) and stellar physics (e.g. atomic diffusion). Low-resolution integral-field-unit spectroscopy in the optical with the MUSE is an attractive prospect if it can provide these diagnostics because it allows us to extract spectra of a large fraction of the cluster stars. We investigate the possibilities of full-spectrum fitting to derive stellar parameters and chemical abundances at low spectral resolution (R~2000). We reanalysed 1584 MUSE spectra of 1061 stars above the turn-off of NGC 6397 using FERRE and employing two different synthetic libraries. We derive the equivalent iron abundance \fehe for fixed values of \afe. We find that (i) the interpolation schema and grid mesh are not critical for the precision, metallicity spread, and trend; (ii) with the two grids, \fehe increases by ~0.2 dex along the sub-giant branch, starting from the turn-off of the main sequence; (iii) restricting the wavelength range to the optical decreases the precision significantly; and (iv) the precision obtained with the synthetic libraries is lower than the precision obtained previously with empirical libraries. Full-spectrum fitting provides reproducible results that are robust to the choice of the reference grid of synthetic spectra and to the details of the analysis. The \fehe increase along the sub-giant branch is in stark contrast with the nearly constant iron abundance previously found with empirical libraries. The precision of the measurements (0.05 dex on \fehe) is currently not sufficient to assess the intrinsic chemical abundance spreads, but this may change with deeper observations. Improvements of the synthetic spectra are still needed to deliver the full possibilities of full-spectrum fitting.

We present simple stellar population models based on the empirical X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL) from NUV to NIR wavelengths. The unmatched characteristics of relatively high resolution and extended wavelength coverage ($350-2480$ nm, $R\sim10\,000$) of the XSL population models bring us closer to bridging optical and NIR studies of intermediate and old stellar populations. It is now common to find good agreement between observed and predicted NUV and optical properties of stellar clusters due to our good understanding of the main-sequence and early giant phases of stars. However, NIR spectra of intermediate-age and old stellar populations are sensitive to cool K and M giants. The asymptotic giant branch, especially the thermally pulsing asymptotic giant branch, shapes the NIR spectra of $0.5-2$ Gyr old stellar populations; the tip of the red giant branch defines the NIR spectra of populations with ages larger than that. We construct sequences of the average spectra of static giants, variable-rich giants, and C-rich giants to include in the models separately. The models span the metallicity range $-2.2<[Fe/H]<+0.2$ and ages above 50 Myr, a broader range in the NIR than in other models based on empirical spectral libraries. Our models can reproduce the integrated optical colours of the Coma cluster galaxies at the same level as other semi-empirical models found in the literature. In the NIR, there are notable differences between the colours of the models and Coma cluster galaxies. The XSL models expand the range of predicted values of NIR indices compared to other models based on empirical libraries. Our models make it possible to perform in-depth studies of colours and spectral features consistently throughout the optical and the NIR range to clarify the role of evolved cool stars in stellar populations.

This moderate-to-high resolution, near-ultraviolet-to-near-infrared ($350-2480$ nm, R $\sim$ 10 000) spectral library is composed of 830 stellar spectra of 683 stars. DR3 improves upon the previous data release by providing the combined de-reddened spectra of the three X-shooter segments over the full $350-2480$ nm wavelength range. It also includes additional 20 M-dwarf spectra from the ESO archive. We provide detailed comparisons between this library and Gaia EDR3, MILES, NGSL, CaT library, and (E-)IRTF. The normalised rms deviation is better than $D=0.05$ or 5$\%$ for the majority of spectra in common between MILES (144 spectra of 180), NGSL (112$/$116), and (E-)IRTF (55$/$77) libraries. Comparing synthetic colours of those spectra reveals only negligible offsets and small rms scatter, such as the median offset(rms) 0.001$\pm$0.040 mag in the (box1-box2) colour of the UVB arm,-0.004$\pm$0.028 mag in (box3-box4) of the VIS arm, and -0.001$\pm$0.045 mag in (box2-box3) colour between the UVB and VIS arms, when comparing stars in common with MILES. We also find an excellent agreement between the Gaia published (BP-RP) colours and those measured from the XSL DR3 spectra, with a zero median offset and an rms scatter of 0.037 mag for 449 non-variable stars. The unmatched characteristics of this library, which combine a relatively high resolution, a large number of stars, and an extended wavelength coverage, will help us to bridge the gap between the optical and the near-IR studies of intermediate and old stellar populations, and to probe low-mass stellar systems.

The path towards robust near-infrared extensions of stellar population models involves the confrontation between empirical and synthetic stellar spectral libraries across the wavelength ranges of photospheric emission. [...] With its near-UV to near-IR coverage, the X-shooter Spectral Library (XSL) allows us to examine to what extent models succeed in reproducing stellar energy distributions (SEDs) and stellar absorption line spectra simultaneously. This study compares the stellar spectra of XSL with the PHOENIX spectra of the Göttingen Spectral Library. The comparison is carried out both separately in the three arms of the X-shooter spectrograph, and jointly across the whole spectrum.
When adopting the stellar parameters published with data release DR2 of XSL, we find that the SEDs of the models are consistent with those of the data at Teff > 5000 K. Below 5000 K, there are significant discrepancies in the SEDs. When leaving the stellar parameters free to adjust, satisfactory representations of the SEDs are obtained down to about 4000 K. However, in particular below 5000 K and in the UVB spectral range, strong local residuals associated with intermediate resolution spectral features are then seen; the necessity of a compromise between reproducing the line spectra and reproducing the SEDs leads to dispersion between the parameters favored by various spectral ranges. We describe the main trends observed and we point out localized offsets between the parameters preferred in this global fit to the SEDs and the parameters in DR2. These depend in a complex way on position in the HR diagram (HRD). We estimate the effect of the offsets on bolometric corrections as a function of position in the HRD and use this for a brief discussion of their impact on the studies of stellar populations. Recent work has used spectra of about 5000 stars in NGC 6397 that were extracted from a MUSE mosaic to determine the atmospheric parameters for these stars by fitting the spectra against the Goettingen Spectral Library. A significant change in metallicity between the turn off and the red giant branch was found and was discussed as a possible manifestation of predicted effects of atomic diffusion. However, the small amplitude of the effect and inconsistency with earlier measurements call for more attention before this result is interpreted. Systematic effects due to the interpolation or to the synthetic spectra cannot be ruled out at this level of precision. We reanalyze the data with the ELODIE and MILES reference libraries in order to assess the robustness of the result. These empirical libraries have a finer metallicity coverage down to approximately the cluster metalicity turn-off. We used the ULySS full-spectrum fitting package, together with the library interpolators to remeasure the three atmospheric parameters effective temperature, surface gravity, and [Fe/H] metallicity. We find a very low [Fe/H] dispersion along the isochrone (0.07 dex), consistent with our error estimate (0.05 dex). However, the [Fe/H] trend is not reproducible. This shows that the data have the potential to reveal patterns of the magnitude of the expected physical effects, but the analysis methods need to be refined to cull systematic effects that currently dominate the patterns.

We present the second data release (DR2) of the X-Shooter Spectral Library (XSL), which contains all the spectra obtained over the six semesters of that program. This release supersedes our first data release from Chen et al. 2014, with a larger number of spectra (813 observations of 666 stars) and with a more extended wavelength coverage as the data from the near-infrared arm of the X-Shooter spectrograph are now included. The DR2 spectra then consist of three segments that were observed simultaneously and, if combined, cover the range between $\sim$300 nm and $\sim$2.45 $μ$m at a spectral resolving power close to $R=10\,000$. The spectra were corrected for instrument transmission and telluric absorption, and they were also corrected for wavelength-dependent flux-losses in 85% of the cases. On average, synthesized broad-band colors agree with those of the MILES library and of the combined IRTF and Extended IRTF libraries to within $\sim\!1$%. The scatter in these comparisons indicates typical errors on individual colors in the XSL of 2$-$4 %. The comparison with 2MASS point source photometry shows systematics of up to 5% in some colors, which we attribute mostly to zero-point or transmission curve errors and a scatter that is consistent with the above uncertainty estimates. The final spectra were corrected for radial velocity and are provided in the rest-frame (with wavelengths in air). The spectra cover a large range of spectral types and chemical compositions (with an emphasis on the red giant branch), which makes this library an asset when creating stellar population synthesis models or for the validation of near-ultraviolet to near-infrared theoretical stellar spectra across the Hertzsprung-Russell diagram.

In this work, we present a uniform set of stellar atmospheric parameters, effective temperatures, surface gravities, and iron abundances for 754 spectra of 616 XSL stars. We used the full-spectrum fitting package ULySS with the empirical MILES library as reference to fit the ultraviolet-blue (UVB) and visible (VIS) spectra. We tested the internal consistency and we compared our results with compilations from the literature. The stars cover a range of effective temperature 2900 < Teff < 38 000 K, surface gravity 0 < log g < 5.7, and iron abundance -2.5 < [Fe/H] < +1.0, with a couple of stars extending down to [Fe/H] = -3.9. The precisions of the measurements for the G- and K-type stars are 0.9%, 0.14, and 0.06 in Teff, log g, and [Fe/H], respectively. For the cool giants with log g < 1, the precisions are 2.1%, 0.21, and 0.22, and for the other cool stars these values are 1%, 0.14, and 0.10. For the hotter stars (Teff > 6500 K), these values are 2.6%, 0.20, and 0.10 for the three parameters.

In a previous paper, we assembled a collection of medium-resolution spectra of 35 carbon stars, covering optical and near-infrared wavelengths from 400 to 2400 nm. The sample includes stars from the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds, with a variety of $(J-K_s)$ colors and pulsation properties. In the present paper, we compare these observations to a new set of high-resolution synthetic spectra, based on hydrostatic model atmospheres. We find that the broad-band colors and the molecular-band strengths measured by spectrophotometric indices match those of the models when $(J-K_s)$ is bluer than about 1.6, while the redder stars require either additional reddening or dust emission or both. Using a grid of models to fit the full observed spectra, we estimate the most likely atmospheric parameters $T_\mathrm{eff}$, $\log(g)$, $[\mathrm{Fe/H}]$ and C/O. These parameters derived independently in the optical and near-infrared are generally consistent when $(J-K_s)<1.6$. The temperatures found based on either wavelength range are typically within $\pm$100K of each other, and $\log(g)$ and $[\mathrm{Fe/H}]$ are consistent with the values expected for this sample. The reddest stars ($(J-K_s)$ $>$ 1.6) are divided into two families, characterized by the presence or absence of an absorption feature at 1.53\,$μ$m, generally associated with HCN and C$_2$H$_2$. Stars from the first family begin to be more affected by circumstellar extinction. The parameters found using optical or near-infrared wavelengths are still compatible with each other, but the error bars become larger. In stars showing the 1.53\,$μ$m feature, which are all large-amplitude variables, the effects of pulsation are strong and the spectra are poorly matched with hydrostatic models. For these, atmospheric parameters could not be derived reliably, and dynamical models are needed for proper interpretation.

The spectra extend from 0.3$μ$m to 2.4$μ$m with a resolving power above $\sim$ 8000. The sample contains stars with a broad range of (J-K) color and pulsation properties located in the Milky Way and the Magellanic Clouds. We show that the distribution of spectral properties of carbon stars at a given (J-K) color becomes bimodal (in our sample) when (J-K) is larger than about 1.5. We describe the two families of spectra that emerge, characterized by the presence or absence of the absorption feature at 1.53$μ$m, generally associated with HCN and C$_2$H$_2$. This feature appears essentially only in large-amplitude variables, though not in all observations. Associated spectral signatures that we interpret as the result of veiling by circumstellar matter, indicate that the 1.53$μ$m feature might point to episodes of dust production in carbon-rich Miras.

Context: The full spectrum fitting of stellar spectra against a library of empirical spectra is a well-established approach to measure the atmospheric parameters of FGK stars with a high internal consistency. Extending it towards cooler stars still remains a challenge. Aims: We address this question by improving the interpolator of the MILES (Medium-resolution INT Library of Empirical Spectra) library in the low effective temperature regime (Tefff < 4800 K), and we refine the determination of the parameters of the cool MILES stars. Methods: We use the ULySS package to determine the atmospheric parameters (Teff, logg and [Fe/H]), and measure the biases of the results with respect to our updated compilation of parameters calibrated against theoretical spectra. After correcting some systematic effects, we compute a new interpolator that we finally use to redetermine the atmospheric parameters homogeneously and assess the biases. Results: Based on an updated literature compilation, we determine Teff in a more accurate and unbiased manner compared to those determined with the original interpolator. The validity range is extended downwards to about Teff = 2900 K compared to 3500 K previously. The mean residual biases on Teff, logg, and [Fe/H], with respect to the literature compilation for the coolest stars (Teff <= 3800 K) computed using the new interpolator, are -15 K, -0.02 dex, and 0.02 dex respectively. The corresponding estimations of the external precision are 63 K, 0.23 dex, and 0.15 dex respectively. For the stars with Teff in the range 3800 - 4200 K, the determinations of Teff and [Fe/H] have been slightly improved. At higher temperatures, the new interpolator is comparable to the original one. The new version of the interpolator is publicly available.

We studied the stellar populations of 40 early-type galaxies using medium resolution long-slit spectroscopy along their major axes (and along the minor axis for two of them), from 10^7 Msol to 10^12 Msol (-9.2 > M_B > -22.4 mag). All the studied galaxies lie on the mass-metallicity and age-mass relations. The transition type dwarfs deviate from the latter relation having younger mean age, and the low-mass dwarf spheroidals have older ages, marking a discontinuity in the relation, possibly due to selection effects.
In all mass regimes, the mean metallicity gradients are approximately -0.2 and the mean age gradients +0.1 dex per decade of radius. The individual gradients are widely spread: $ -0.1 < \nabla_{\rm Age} < 0.4 $ and $-0.54 < \nabla_{[{\rm Fe/H}]} < +0.2 $. We do not find evidence for a correlation between the metallicity gradient and luminosity, velocity dispersion, central age or age gradient. Likewise, we do not find a correlation between the age gradient and any other parameter in bright early-type galaxies. In faint early-types with $M_B \gtrsim -17$ mag, on the other hand, we find a correlation between the age gradient and luminosity: the age gradient becomes more positive for fainter galaxies.
We conclude that various physical mechanisms can lead to similar gradients and that these gradients are robust against the environmental effects. In particular, the gradients observed in dwarfs galaxies certainly survived the transformation of the progenitors through tidal harassment or/and ram-pressure strip**. The diversity of metallicity gradients amongst dwarf elliptical galaxies may reflect a plurality of progenitors' morphologies. The dwarfs with steep metallicity gradients could have originated from blue compact dwarfs and those with flat profiles from dwarf irregulars and late type spirals. (Abridged)

A number of spectroscopic surveys have been carried out or are planned to study the origin of the Milky Way. Their exploitation requires reliable automated methods and softwares to measure the fundamental parameters of the stars. Adopting the ULySS package, we have tested the effect of different resolutions and signal-to-noise ratios (SNR) on the measurement of the stellar atmospheric parameters (effective temperature Teff, surface gravity log g, and metallicity [Fe/H]). We show that ULySS is reliable to determine these parameters with medium-resolution spectra (R~2000). Then, we applied the method to measure the parameters of 771 stars selected in the commissioning database of the Guoshou**g Telescope (GSJT). The results were compared with the SDSS/SEGUE Stellar Parameter Pipeline (SSPP), and we derived precisions of 167 K, 0.34 dex, and 0.16 dex for Teff, log g and [Fe/H] respectively. Furthermore, 120 of these stars are selected to construct the primary stellar spectra template library (Version 1.0) of GSJT, and will be deployed as basic ingredients for the GSJT automated parametrization pipeline.

MILES is a medium spectral-resolution library in the optical domain covering a wide range of temperatures, surface gravities and metallicities. Aims. We re-determine the atmospheric parameters of these stars in order to improve the homogeneity and accuracy. We build an interpolating function that returns a spectrum as a function of the three atmospheric parameters, and finally, we characterize the precision of the wavelength calibration and stability of the spectral resolution. Methods. We use the ULySS program with the ELODIE library as a reference and compare the results with literature compilations. Results. We obtain precisions of 60 K, 0.13 and 0.05 dex respectively for Teff, log g and [Fe/H] for the FGK stars. For the M stars, the mean errors are 38 K, 0.26 and 0.12 dex, and for the OBA 3.5%, 0.17 and 0.13 dex. We construct an interpolator that we test against the MILES stars themselves. We test it also by measuring the atmospheric parameters of the CFLIB stars with MILES as reference and find it to be more reliable than the ELODIE interpolator for the evolved hot stars, like in particular those of the blue horizontal branch.

Now that large databases of resolved galaxy images are provided by modern imaging surveys, advanced morphological studies can be envisioned, urging for well defined calibration samples. We present the EFIGI catalogue, a multiwavelength database specifically designed for a dense sampling of all Hubble types. The catalogue merges data from standard surveys and catalogues (Principal Galaxy Catalogue, Sloan Digital Sky Survey, Value-Added Galaxy Catalogue, HyperLeda, and the NASA Extragalactic Database) and provides detailed morphological information. Imaging data are obtained from the SDSS DR4 in the u, g, r, i, and z bands for a sample of 4458 PGC galaxies, whereas photometric and spectroscopic data are obtained from the SDSS DR5 catalogue. Point-Spread Function models are derived in all five bands. Composite colour images of all objects are visually examined by a group of astronomers, and galaxies are staged along the Hubble sequence and classified according to 16 morphological attributes describing their structure, texture, as well as environment and appearance on a five-level scale. The EFIGI Hubble sequence shows remarkable agreement with the RC3 Revised Hubble Sequence. The main characteristics and reliability of the catalogue are examined, including photometric completeness, type mix, systematic trends and correlations. The final EFIGI database is a large sub-sample of the local Universe, with a dense sampling of Sd, Sdm, Sm and Im types compared to magnitude-limited catalogues. We estimate the photometric catalogue to be more than ~ 80% complete for galaxies with 10<g<14. More than 99.5% of EFIGI galaxies have a known redshift in the HyperLeda and NED databases.

NGC 4486A is a low-luminosity elliptical galaxy harbouring an edge-on nuclear disk of stars and dust. It is known to host a super-massive black hole. We study its large-scale kinematics and stellar population along the major axis to investigate the link between the nuclear and global properties. We use long-slit medium-resolution optical spectra that we fit against stellar population models. The SSP-equivalent age is about 12 Gyr old throughout the body of the galaxy, and its metallicity decreases from [Fe/H] = 0.18 near the centre to sub-solar values in the outskirts. The metallicity gradient is -0.24 dex per decade of radius within the effective isophote. The velocity dispersion is 132+-3 km/s at 1.3 arcsec from the centre and decreases outwards. The rotation velocity reaches a maximum V_max >~ 115+-5 km/s at a radius 1.3 < r_max < 2 arcsec. NGC\,4486A appears to be a typical low-luminosity elliptical galaxy. There is no signature in the stellar population of the possible ancient accretion/merging event that produced the disk.

Context: Empirical libraries of stellar spectra play an important role in different fields. For example, they are used as reference for the automatic determination of atmospheric parameters, or for building synthetic stellar populations to study galaxies. The CFLIB (Coude-feed library, Indo-US) database is at present one of the most complete libraries, in terms of its coverage of the atmospheric parameters space (Teff, log g and [Fe/H]) and wavelength coverage 3460 - 9464 A at a resolution of 1 A FWHM. Although the atmospheric parameters of most of the stars were determined from detailed analyses of high-resolution spectra, for nearly 300 of the 1273 stars of the library at least one of the three parameters is missing. For the others, the measurements, compiled from the literature, are inhomogeneous.
Aims: In this paper, we re-determine the atmospheric parameters, directly using the CFLIB spectra, and compare them to the previous studies.
Methods: We use the ULySS program to derive the atmospheric parameters, using the ELODIE library as a reference.
Results: Based on comparisons with several previous studies we conclude that our determinations are unbiased. For the 958 F,G, and K type stars the precision on Teff, log g, and [Fe/H] is respectively 43 K, 0.13 dex and 0.05 dex. For the 53 M stars they are 82 K, 0.22 dex and 0.28 dex. And, for the 260 OBA type stars the relative precision on Teff is 5.1%, and on log g, and [Fe/H] the precision is respectively 0.19 dex and 0.16 dex. These parameters will be used to re-calibrate the CFLIB fluxes and to produce synthetic spectra of stellar populations.

We pick out the 35 brightest galaxies from Goto's E+A galaxies catalogue which are selected from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey Data Release 5. The spectra of E+As are prominently characterized by the strong Balmer absorption lines but little [Oii] or H_alpha emission lines. In this work we study the stellar populations of the sample galaxies by fitting their spectra using ULySS, which is a robust full spectrum fitting method. We fit each of the sample with 1-population (a single stellar population-a SSP) and 3-population (3 SSPs) models, separately. By 1-population fits, we obtain SSP-equivalent ages and metallicities which correspond to the `luminosity-weighted' averages. By 3-population fits, we divide components into three groups in age (old stellar population-OSP, intermediate-age stellar population-ISP, and young stellar population-YSP), and then get the optimal age, metallicity and population fractions in both mass and light for OSP, ISP and YSP. During the fits, both Pegase.HR/Elodie3.1 and Vazdekis/Miles are used as two independent population models. The two models result in generally consistent conclusions as follows: for all the sample galaxies, YSPs (< 1Gyr) make important contributions to the light. However, the dominant contributors to mass are OSPs. We also reconstruct the smoothing star formation histories (SFHs) by giving star formation rate (SFR) versus evolutionary age. In addition, we fit the E+A sample and 34 randomly selected elliptical galaxies with 2-population (2 SSPs) model. We obtain the equivalent age of old components for each of the E+A sample and elliptical galaxies. By comparison, the old components of E+As are statistically much younger than those of ellipticals. From the standpoint of the stellar population age, this probably provides an evidence for the proposed evolutionary link from E+As to early-types (E/S0s).

Direct Hubble Space Telescope (HST) Advanced Camera for Surveys (ACS) images and integrated-light spectra of 6 m telescope of Special Astrophysical Observatory of Russian Academy of Sciences have been used for quantitative star formation history analysis. The spectroscopic and colour-magnitude diagrams analysis gives consistent results. These galaxies appear to be dominated by an old population (12-14 Gyr) of low metallicity ([Fe/H]~-1.5). Stars of ages about 1 to 4 Gyr have been detected in both galaxies. The later population shows marginal metal enrichment. We do not detect any significant radial gradients in age or metallicity in these galaxies. Our radial velocity measurement suggests that the HII knot on the line-of-sight of KDG 61 is not gravitationally attached to the galaxy.

We compare six popularly used evolutionary population synthesis (EPS) models (BC03, CB07, Ma05, GALEV, GRASIL, Vazdekis/Miles) through fitting the full optical spectra of six representative types of galaxies (star-forming and composite galaxies, Seyfert 2s, LINERs, E+A and early-type galaxies), which are taken from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Throughout our paper, we use the simple stellar populations (SSPs) from each EPS model and the software STARLIGHT to do our fits. Our main results are: Using different EPS models the resulted numerical values of contributed light fractions change obviously, even though the dominant populations are consistent. The stellar population synthesis does depend on the selection of age and metallicity, while it does not depend on the stellar evolution track much. The importance of young populations decreases from star-forming, composite, Seyfert 2, LINER to early-type galaxies, and E+A galaxies lie between composite galaxies and Seyfert 2s in most cases. We conclude that different EPS models do derive different stellar populations, so that it is not reasonable to directly compare stellar populations estimated from different EPS models. To get reliable results, we should use the same EPS model for the compared samples.

NGC404 is a nearly face-on nearby low-luminosity lenticular galaxy. Probing its characteristics provides a wealth of information on the details of possible evolution processes of dS0 galaxies which may not be possible in other, more distant objects. In order to study its kinematics and star formation history, we obtained long slit spectroscopy at the OHP 1m93 telescope along the major and minor axes of NGC404. The spectra have a resolution R = 3600 covering a wavelength range from 4600 to 5500 A. The data are fitted against the Pegase.HR stellar population models to derive simultaneously the internal stellar kinematics, ages and metallicities. Firstly, the global properties of the galaxy are analyzed by fitting a single model and to the data and looking at the kinematic variations and SSP equivalent age and metallicities as a function of radius. Afterwards, the stellar populations are decomposed into 4 components that are individually analyzed. NGC404 clearly shows two radial velocity inversions along its major axis. The kinematically decoupled core rotates in the same direction as the neutral hydrogen shell that surrounds the galaxy. We resolved the star formation history in the core of the galaxy ino 4 events: A very young (< 150 Myr, and [Fe/H] = 0.4) component with constant on-going star formation, a second young (430 Myr) component with [Fe/H] = 0.1, an intermediate population (1.7 Gyr) which has [Fe/H] = -0.05 and, finally, an old (12 Gyr) component with [Fe/H] = -1.26. The two young components fade very quickly with radius, leaving only the intermediate and old population at a radius of 25" (370 pc) from the centre. We conclude that NGC404 had a spiral morphology about 1 Gyr ago and that one or many merger events has triggered a morphological transition.

The formation and evolution of galaxies is imprinted on their stellar population radial gradients. Two recent articles present conflicting results concerning the mass dependence of the metallicity gradients for early-type dwarf galaxies. On one side, Spolaor et al. show a tight positive correlation between the total metallicity, Z/H and the mass. On the other side, in a distinct sample, we do not find any trend involving Fe/H (Koleva et al.). In order to investigate the origin of the discrepancy, we examine various factors that may affect the determination of the gradients: namely the sky subtraction and the signal-to-noise ratio. We conclude that our detection of gradients are well above the possible analysis biases. Then, we measured the Mg/Fe relative abundance profile and found moderate gradients. The derived Z/H gradients scatter around -0.4 dex/r_e. The two samples contain the same types of objects and the reason of the disagreement is still not understood.

We present optical VLT spectroscopy of 16 dwarf elliptical galaxies (or dEs) comparable in mass to NGC 205, and belonging to the Fornax cluster and to nearby groups of galaxies. Using ULySS and STECKMAP, we derive radial profiles of the SSP-equivalent ages, metallicities and star-formation histories. The old stellar population of the dEs, which dominates their mass, is likely coeval with that of massive ellipticals or bulges, but the star formation efficiency is lower. Important intermediate age (1-5 Gyr) populations, and frequently tails of star formation until recent times are detected. These histories are reminiscent of their lower mass dSph counterparts of the Local Group. Most galaxies (10/16) show significant metallicity gradients, with metallicity declining by 0.5 dex over one half-light radius on average. These gradients are already present in the old population. The flattened (or discy), rotating objects (6/16) have flat metallicity profiles. This may be consistent with a distinct origin for these galaxies or it may be due to their geometry. The central SSP-equivalent age varies between 1 and 6 Gyr, with the age slowly increasing with radius in the vast majority of objects. The group and cluster galaxies have similar radial gradients and star-formation histories. The strong and old metallicity gradients place important constraints on the possible formation scenarios of dEs. Numerical simulations of the formation of spherical low-mass galaxies reproduce these gradients, but they require a longer time for them to build up. A gentle depletion of the gas, by ram-pressure strip** or starvation, could drive the gas-rich, star-forming progenitors to the present dEs.

Aims. We provide an easy-to-use full-spectrum fitting package and explore its applications to (i) the determination of the stellar atmospheric parameters and (ii) the study of the history of stellar populations. Methods. We developed ULySS, a package to fit spectroscopic observations against a linear combination of non-linear model components convolved with a parametric line-of-sight velocity distribution. The minimization can be either local or global, and determines all the parameters in a single fit. We use chi2 maps, convergence maps and Monte-Carlo simulations to study the degeneracies, local minima and to estimate the errors. Results. We show the importance of determining the shape of the continuum simultaneously to the other parameters by including a multiplicative polynomial in the model (without prior pseudo-continuum determination, or rectification of the spectrum). We also stress the benefice of using an accurate line-spread function, depending on the wavelength, so that the line-shape of the models properly match the observation. For simple models, i. e., to measure the atmospheric parameters or the age/metallicity of a single-age stellar population, there is often a unique minimum, or when local minima exist they can unambiguously be recognized. For more complex models, Monte-Carlo simulations are required to assess the validity of the solution. Conclusions. The ULySS package is public, simple to use and flexible. The full spectrum fitting makes optimal usage of the signal.

In some galaxies, the central velocity dispersion, sigma, is depressed with respect to the surroundings. This sigma-drop phenomenon may have different physical origins, bearing information about the internal dynamics of the host galaxy. In this article, we stress the importance also of observational artifacts due to the sigma-metallicity degeneracy: when a spectrum of a population is compared with a template of miss-matched metallicity, the velocity dispersion may be wrongly estimated. A sigma-drop may appear in place of a metallicity peak. The discussion is illustrated using VLT/FORS spectra of diffuse elliptical galaxies. Some of the sigma-drop galaxies reported in the literature may be analysis artifacts.

The morphology and stellar populations of low-luminosity early-type galaxies in clusters have until now been limited to a few relatively nearby clusters such as Virgo or Fornax. Scenarii for the formation and evolution of dwarf galaxies in clusters are therefore not well constrained. We investigate here the morphology and stellar populations of low-luminosity galaxies in the relaxed cluster Abell 496 (z=0.0330). Deep multiband imaging obtained with the CFHT Megacam allowed us to select a sample of faint galaxies (-18.8<M_B<-15.1 mag). We observed 118 galaxies spectroscopically with the ESO VLT FLAMES/Giraffe spectrograph (R=6300). We present structural analysis and colour maps for the 48 galaxies belonging to the cluster. We fit the spectra of 46 objects with PEGASE.HR synthetic spectra to estimate the ages, metallicities, and velocity dispersions. We computed values of $α$/Fe abundance ratios from the measurements of Lick indices. High-precision estimates of stellar population properties have been obtained for a large sample of faint galaxies in a cluster, allowing for the extension of relations between stellar populations and internal kinematics to the low-velocity dispersion regime. We have revealed a peculiar population of elliptical galaxies in the core of the cluster, resembling massive early-type galaxies by their stellar population properties and velocity dispersions, but having luminosities of about 2 mag fainter. External mechanisms of gas removal (ram pressure strip** and gravitational harassment) are more likely to have occurred than internal mechanisms such as supernova-driven winds. The violent tidal strip** of intermediate-luminosity, early-type galaxies in the cluster core can explain the properties of the peculiar elliptical galaxies surrounding the cD galaxy.

Fitting whole spectra at intermediate spectral resolution (R = 1000 -- 3000), to derive physical properties of stellar populations, appears as an optimized alternative to methods based on spectrophotometric indices: it uses all the redundant information contained in the signal. This paper addresses the validation of the method and it investigates the quality of the population models together with the reliability of the fitting procedures. We are using two algorithms: STECKMAP, a non-parametric regularized program and NBURSTS a parametric non-linear minimization. We compare three spectral synthesis models for single stellar populations: Pegase-HR, Galaxev (BC03) and Vazdekis/Miles, and we analyse spectra of Galactic clusters whose populations are known from studies of color-magnitude diagrams (CMD) and spectroscopy of individual stars. We find that: (1) The quality of the models critically depends on the stellar library they use. Pegase-HR and Vazdekis/Miles are consistent, while the comparison between Pegase-HR and BC03 shows some systematics reflecting the limitations of the stellar library (STELIB) used to generate the latter models; (2) The two fitting programs are consistent; (3) For globular clusters and M67 spectra, the method restitutes metallicities in agreement with spectroscopy of stars within 0.14 dex; (4) The spectroscopic ages are very sensitive to the presence of a blue horizontal branch (BHB) or of blue stragglers. A BHB morphology results in a young SSP-equivalent age. Fitting a free amount of blue stars in addition to the SSP model to mimic the BHB improves and stabilizes the fit and restores ages in agreement with CMDs studies. This method is potentially able to disentangle age or BHB effects in extragalactic clusters.

These dE's are more metal-rich and younger than previous estimates based on narrow-band photometry and low-resolution spectroscopy. For our sample we find a mean metallicity [Z/H] = -0.33 dex and mean age 3.5 Gyr, consistent with similar samples of dE's in other environments (Local Group, Virgo). Three dE's in our sample show emission lines and very young ages. This suggests that some dE's formed stars until a very recent epoch and were self-enriched by a long star formation history. Previous observations of large near-infrared (~8500A) Ca II absorption strengths in these dE's are in good agreement with the new metallicity estimates, solving part of the so-called Calcium puzzle.

We show that the quality of the fits is not anymore limited by the size of the stellar libraries in a large range of ages (0.1 to 10 Gyrs) and metallicities (-2 to +0.4 dex). The main limitations of the empirical stellar libraries are (i) the coverage of the parameters space (lack of hot stars of low metallicity), (ii) the precision and homogeneity of the atmospheric parameters and (iii) the non-resolution of individual element abundances (in particular [$α$/Fe]). Detailed abundance measurements in the large libraries, and usage of theoretical libraries are probably the next steps, and we show that a combination between an empirical (ELODIE) and a theoretical library (Coelho et al. 2005) immediately improves the modeling of ($α$-enhanced) globular clusters.

We present the first 3D observations of a diffuse elliptical galaxy (dE). The good quality data (S/N up to 40) reveal the kinematical signature of an embedded stellar disc, reminiscent of what is commonly observed in elliptical galaxies, though similarity of their origins is questionable. Colour map built from HST ACS images confirms the presence of this disc. Its characteristic scale (about 3 arcsec = 250 pc) is about a half of galaxy's effective radius, and its metallicity is 0.1-0.2 dex larger than the underlying population. Fitting the spectra with synthetic single stellar populations (SSP) we found an SSP-equivalent age of 5 Gyr and nearly solar metallicity [Fe/H]=-0.06 dex. We checked that these determinations are consistent with those based on Lick indices, but have smaller error bars. The kinematical discovery of a stellar disc in dE gives additional support to an evolutionary link from dwarf irregular galaxies due to strip** of the gas against the intra-cluster medium.

We show that early-type and late-type galaxies, from dwarfs to giants, trace different yet approximately parallel TFRs. Surprisingly, early-type and late-type galaxies trace a single yet curved sTFR over a range of 3.5 orders of magnitude in stellar mass. Moreover, all galaxies trace a single, linear gsTFR, over 3.5 orders of magnitude in HI gas+stellar mass. Dwarf ellipticals, however, lie slightly below the gsTFR. This may indicate that early-type dwarfs, contrary to the late-types, have lost their gas, e.g. by galactic winds or ram-pressure strip**. Overall, environment only plays a secondary role in sha** these relations, making them a rather ``clean'' cosmological tool. LCDM simulations predict roughly the correct slopes for these relations.

We used FLAMES on the VLT to obtain accurate velocities for 149 GCs, within a ~500x150 kpc strip centered on NGC 1399, the Fornax central galaxy. These objects are at the very bright tail (M_V < -9.5) of the GC luminosity function, overlap** the so-called ``ultra-compact dwarfs'' magnitude range. Eight of the brightest FLAMES-confirmed members indeed show hints of resolution in the subarcsecond pre-imaging data we used for selecting the ~500 targets for FLAMES spectroscopy. Ignoring the GCs around galaxies by applying 3d_25 diameter masks, we find 61 GCs of 20.0 < V < 22.2 lying in the intra-cluster (IC) medium. The velocity dispersion of the population of ICGCs is 200 km/s at ~150 kpc from the central NGC 1399 and rises to nearly 400 km/s at 200 kpc, a value which compares with the velocity dispersion of the population of dwarf galaxies, thought to be infalling from the surroundings of the cluster.

We present three-integral dynamical models for the three Local Group dwarf elliptical galaxies: NGC147, NGC185, and NGC205. It is the first time models are constructed for the Local Group dEs that allow for the presence of dark matter at large radii and that are constrained by kinematics out to at least one half-light radius. The B-band mass-to-light ratios of all three galaxies are rather similar, (M/L)_B = 3-4. Within the inner two half-light radii, about 40-50% of the mass is in the form of dark matter, so dEs contain about as much dark matter as bright ellipticals.
NGC205 and NGC147 have a relatively isotropic velocity dispersion tensor within the region where the internal dynamics are strongly constrained by the data. Our estimated inclination for NGC185 is i ~ 50 degrees because in that case the model has an intrinsic flattening close to the peak of the intrinsic shape distribution of dEs and it, like the best fitting models for NGC147 and NGC205, is nearly isotropic. We also show that the dynamical properties of the bright nucleus of NGC205 are not unlike those of a massive globular cluster.
