The galaxy cluster AC114 III. The role of galaxy clusters in the mass-metallicity relation

Abstract: We study the role of galaxy clusters in the mass-metallicity relation by using a sample of galaxies belonging to the AC114 (z=0.317) galaxy cluster. The data was taken from archival VIMOS-MOS spectroscopy to estimate gas-phase metallicities by using strong-line methods. On the other hand, the data obtained from DECaLS DR10 and VIKING DR4 ESO surveys were used to estimate photometric masses. We fou… ▽ More We study the role of galaxy clusters in the mass-metallicity relation by using a sample of galaxies belonging to the AC114 (z=0.317) galaxy cluster. The data was taken from archival VIMOS-MOS spectroscopy to estimate gas-phase metallicities by using strong-line methods. On the other hand, the data obtained from DECaLS DR10 and VIKING DR4 ESO surveys were used to estimate photometric masses. We found that passive galaxies dominate the population of AC114 in the cluster center, whereas the star-forming members tend to be located outside this region. The constructed MZR from the latter indicates that AC114 SF galaxies have a lower metallicity content than foreground galaxies (z up to 0.28) and the same or even lower metallicities with respect to background galaxies (spanning redshifts 0.34 to 0.70), producing slightly a shallower slope compared to the field MZR at z~0.3. Additionally, it shows a higher scatter of 0.17 dex, consistent with MZRs of galaxy clusters reported in the literature. The responsible mechanisms behind the scatter are consistent with simulations and observations where dynamic and environmental effects such as galaxy-galaxy interactions and ram-pressure strip** are sha** the chemical evolution of the AC114 SF members. The former mechanism can decrease gas-phase metallicities because of pristine gas infall to the galaxy's outskirts, and the latter increases gas-phase metallicities because of the strip** of the metal-poor gas located at the outskirts of the SF members. The AC114 SF members are metal-poorer than field galaxies at the same redshift, so the cluster dominated by galaxy-galaxy interactions is the best scenario that explains the slightly shallower slope and the higher scatter of the AC114-MZR compared to the field MZR at z~0.3. △ Less

A redshift database towards the Shapley Supercluster region

Abstract: We present a database and velocity catalogue towards the region of the Shapley Supercluster based on 18,146 measured velocities for 10,719 galaxies in the approximately 300 square degree area between 12h 43mn 00s < R.A. < 14h 17mn 00s and -23° 30' 00" < Dec < -38° 30' 00". The data catalogue contains velocities from the literature found until 2015. It also includes 5,084 velocities, corresponding… ▽ More We present a database and velocity catalogue towards the region of the Shapley Supercluster based on 18,146 measured velocities for 10,719 galaxies in the approximately 300 square degree area between 12h 43mn 00s < R.A. < 14h 17mn 00s and -23° 30' 00" < Dec < -38° 30' 00". The data catalogue contains velocities from the literature found until 2015. It also includes 5,084 velocities, corresponding to 4,617 galaxies, observed by us at Las Campanas and CTIO observatories and not reported individually until now. Of these, 2,585 correspond to galaxies with no other previously published velocity measurement before 2015. Every galaxy in the velocity database has been identified with a galaxy extracted from the SuperCOSMOS photometric catalogues. We also provide a combined average velocity catalogue for all 10,719 galaxies with measured velocities, adopting the SuperCOSMOS positions as a homogeneous base. A general magnitude cut-off at R2=18.0 mag was adopted (with exceptions only for some of the new reported velocities). In general terms, we confirm the overall structure of the Shapley Supercluster, as found on earlier papers. Structure and dynamics of the supercluster of galaxies SC0028-0005

The dynamics of very few superclusters have been analysed up to now. In this paper we study the supercluster SC0028-0005, at redshift 0.22, identify the most prominent groups and/or clusters that make up the supercluster, and investigate the dynamic state of this structure. For the membership identification, we have used photometric and spectroscopic data from SDSS-DR10, finding 6 main structures in a flat spatial distribution. We have also used a deep multi-band observation with MegaCam/CFHT to estimate de mass distribution through the weak-lensing effect. For the dynamical analysis, we have determined the relative distances along the line of sight within the supercluster using the Fundamental Plane of early-type galaxies. Finally, we have computed the peculiar velocities of each of the main structures. The 3D distribution suggests that SC0028-005 is indeed a collapsing supercluster, supporting the formation scenario of these structures. Using the spherical collapse model, we estimate that the mass within $r = 10$~Mpc should lie between 4 and $16 \times 10^{15} M_\odot$. The farthest detected members of the supercluster suggest that within $\sim 60$~Mpc the density contrast is $δ\sim 3$ with respect to the critical density at $z=0.22$, implying a total mass of $\sim 4.6$--$16 \times 10^{17} M_\odot$, most of which in the form of low-mass galaxy groups or smaller substructures. △ Less

The structure and dynamics of the AC114 galaxy cluster revisited

Abstract: We present a dynamical analysis of the galaxy cluster AC114 based on a catalogue of 524 velocities. Of these, 169 (32%) are newly obtained at ESO (Chile) with the VLT and the VIMOS spectrograph. Data on individual galaxies are presented and the accuracy of the measured velocities is discussed. Dynamical properties of the cluster are derived. We obtain an improved mean redshift value z= 0.31665 +/-… ▽ More We present a dynamical analysis of the galaxy cluster AC114 based on a catalogue of 524 velocities. Dynamical properties of the cluster are derived. We obtain an improved mean redshift value z= 0.31665 +/- 0.0008 and velocity dispersion σ= 1893+73-82 \kms. A large velocity dispersion within the core radius and the shape of the infall pattern suggests that this part of the cluster is in a radial phase of relaxation with a very elongated radial filament spanning 12000 \kms. A radial foreground structure is detected within the central 0.5/h Mpc radius, recognizable as a redshift group at the same central redshift value. We analyze the color distribution for this archetype Butcher-Oemler galaxy cluster and identify the separate red and blue galaxy sequences. The latter subset contains 44% of confirmed members of the cluster, reaching magnitudes as faint as R_{f}= 21.1 (1.0 magnitude fainter than previous studies). We derive a mass M_{200}= (4.3 \pm 0.7) x 10^15 Msun/h. In a subsequent paper we will utilize the spectral data presented here to explore the mass-metallicity relation for this intermediate redshift cluster. △ Less

New measurements of radial velocities in clusters of galaxies -- V

Abstract: As a part of our galaxy-cluster redshift survey, we present a set of 80 new velocities in the 4 clusters Abell 376, Abell 970, Abell 1356, and Abell 2244, obtained at Haute-Provence observatory. This set now completes our previous analysis, especially for the first two clusters. Data on individual galaxies are presented, and we discuss some cluster properties. For A376, we obtained an improved me… ▽ More As a part of our galaxy-cluster redshift survey, we present a set of 80 new velocities in the 4 clusters Abell 376, Abell 970, Abell 1356, and Abell 2244, obtained at Haute-Provence observatory. This set now completes our previous analysis, especially for the first two clusters. Data on individual galaxies are presented, and we discuss some cluster properties. For A376, we obtained an improved mean redshift <z> = 0.047503$ with a velocity dispersion of σ_V = 860 km/s. For A970, we have <z> = 0.058747 with σ_V = 881 km/s. We show that the A1356 cluster is not a member of the "Leo-Virgo" supercluster at a mean redshift <z>= 0.112 and should be considered just as a foreground group of galaxies at <z> = 0.0689, as well as A1435 at <z> = 0.062. We obtain <z> = 0.099623 for A2244 with σ_V = 965 km/s. The relative proximity of clusters A2244 and A2245 (<z> = 0.0873816, σ_V = 992 km/s) suggests that these could be members of a supercluster that would include A2249; however, from X-ray data there is no indication of interaction between A2244 and A2245. △ Less

Its 136,304 spectra have yielded 110,256 new extragalactic redshifts and a new catalogue of 125,071 galaxies making near-complete samples with (K, H, J, r_F, b_J) <= (12.65, 12.95, 13.75, 15.60, 16.75). We describe changes to the information in the database since earlier interim data releases. Here we provide redshift maps of the southern local universe with z<=0.1, showing nearby large-scale structures in hitherto unseen detail. Enlightening the structure and dynamics of Abell 1942

Abstract: We present a dynamical analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 1942 based on a set of 128 velocities obtained at the European Southern Observatory. Data on individual galaxies are presented and the accuracy of the determined velocities is discussed as well as some properties of the cluster. We have also made use of publicly available Chandra X-ray data. We obtained an improved mean redshift value z… ▽ More We present a dynamical analysis of the galaxy cluster Abell 1942 based on a set of 128 velocities obtained at the European Southern Observatory. Data on individual galaxies are presented and the accuracy of the determined velocities is discussed as well as some properties of the cluster. We have also made use of publicly available Chandra X-ray data. We obtained an improved mean redshift value z = 0.22513 \pm 0.0008 and velocity dispersion sigma = 908^{+147}_{-139} km/s. Our analysis indicates that inside a radius of ~1.5 h_{70}^{-1} Mpc (~7 arcmin) the cluster is well relaxed, without any remarkable feature and the X-ray emission traces fairly well the galaxy distribution. Two possible optical substructures are seen at ~5 arcmin from the centre towards the Northwest and the Southwest direction, but are not confirmed by the velocity field. These clumps are however, kinematically bound to the main structure of Abell 1942. X-ray spectroscopic analysis of Chandra data resulted in a temperature kT = 5.5 \pm 0.5 keV and metal abundance Z = 0.33 \pm 0.15 Z_odot. The velocity dispersion corresponding to this temperature using the T_X-sigma scaling relation is in good agreement with the measured galaxies velocities. Our photometric redshift analysis suggests that the weak lensing signal observed at the south of the cluster and previously attributed to a "dark clump", is produced by background sources, possibly distributed as a filamentary structure. △ Less

Abstract: We present a sample of 29 galaxy clusters from the XMM-LSS survey over an area of some 5deg2 out to a redshift of z=1.05. The sample clusters, which represent about half of the X-ray clusters identified in the region, follow well defined X-ray selection criteria and are all spectroscopically confirmed. For all clusters, we provide X-ray luminosities and temperatures as well as masses. The cluste… ▽ More We present a sample of 29 galaxy clusters from the XMM-LSS survey over an area of some 5deg2 out to a redshift of z=1.05. The sample clusters, which represent about half of the X-ray clusters identified in the region, follow well defined X-ray selection criteria and are all spectroscopically confirmed. For all clusters, we provide X-ray luminosities and temperatures as well as masses. The cluster distribution peaks around z=0.3 and T =1.5 keV, half of the objects being groups with a temperature below 2 keV. Our L-T(z) relation points toward self-similar evolution, but does not exclude other physically plausible models. Assuming that cluster scaling laws follow self-similar evolution, our number density estimates up to z=1 are compatible with the predictions of the concordance cosmology and with the findings of previous ROSAT surveys. Our well monitored selection function allowed us to demonstrate that the inclusion of selection effects is essential for the correct determination of the evolution of the L-T relation, which may explain the contradictory results from previous studies. Extensive simulations show that extending the survey area to 10deg2 has the potential to exclude the non-evolution hypothesis, but that constraints on more refined ICM models will probably be limited by the large intrinsic dispersion of the L-T relation. We further demonstrate that increasing the dispersion in the scaling laws increases the number of detectable clusters, hence generating further degeneracy [in addition to sigma8, Omega_m, L(M,z) and T(M,z)] in the cosmological interpretation of the cluster number counts. We provide useful empirical formulae for the cluster mass-flux and mass-count-rate relations as well as a comparison between the XMM-LSS mass sensitivity and that of forthcoming SZ surveys. △ Less

We have spectroscopically identified 691 objects including 580 gal., 7 QSOs, and 104 stars. This study provides 531 new redshifts in the CDFS. It confirms the presence of several large scale structures in the CDFS. To test the impact of these structures in the GOODS-South field, we ... compare the evolution of rest-frame U, B, V and K galaxy luminosity densities to that derived from the CFRS. The CDFS field shows a significant excess of luminosity densities in the z=0.5-0.75 range, which increases with the wavelength, reaching up to 0.5 dex at 2.1 um. Stellar mass and specific star formation evolutions might be significantly affected by the presence of the peculiar large scale structures at z= 0.668 and at z= 0.735, that contain a significant excess of evolved, massive galaxies when compared to other fields. This leads to a clear warning to results based on the CDFS/GOODS South fields, especially those related to the evolution of red luminosity densities, i.e. stellar mass density and specific star formation rate. Photometric redshift techniques, when applied to that field, are producing quantities which are apparently less affected by cosmic variance (0.25 dex at 2.1 um), however at the cost of the difficulty in disentangling between evolutionary and cosmic variance effects. △ Less

Structure and dynamics of the Shapley Supercluster

Abstract: We present results of our wide-field redshift survey of galaxies in a 285 square degree region of the Shapley Supercluster (SSC), based on a set of 10529 velocity measurements (including 1201 new ones) on 8632 galaxies obtained from various telescopes and from the literature. Our data reveal that the main plane of the SSC (v~ 14500 km/s) extends further than previous estimates, filling the whole… ▽ More We present results of our wide-field redshift survey of galaxies in a 285 square degree region of the Shapley Supercluster (SSC), based on a set of 10529 velocity measurements (including 1201 new ones) on 8632 galaxies obtained from various telescopes and from the literature. Our data reveal that the main plane of the SSC (v~ 14500 km/s) extends further than previous estimates, filling the whole extent of our survey region of 12~degrees by 30~degrees on the sky (30 x 75~h-1 Mpc). There is also a connecting structure associated with the slightly nearer Abell~3571 cluster complex (v~ 12000km/s. These galaxies seem to link two previously identified sheets of galaxies and establish a connection with a third one at V= 15000 km/s near R.A.= 13h. They also tend to fill the gap of galaxies between the foreground Hydra-Centaurus region and the more distant SSC. In the velocity range of the Shapley Supercluster (9000 km/s < cz < 18000 km/s), we found redshift-space overdensities with b\_j < 17.5 of ~5.4 over the 225 square degree central region and ~3.8 in a 192 square degree region excluding rich clusters. Over the large region of our survey, we find that the intercluster galaxies make up 48 per cent of the observed galaxies in the SSC region and, accounting for the different completeness, may contribute nearly twice as much mass as the cluster galaxies. In this paper, we discuss the completeness of the velocity catalogue, the morphology of the supercluster, the global overdensity, and some properties of the individual galaxy clusters in the Supercluster. △ Less

The 6dF Galaxy Survey: Samples, Observational Techniques and the First Data Release

Abstract: The 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) aims to measure the redshifts of around 150,000 galaxies, and the peculiar velocities of a 15,000-member sub-sample, over almost the entire southern sky. When complete, it will be the largest redshift survey of the nearby universe, reaching out to about z ~ 0.15, and more than an order of magnitude larger than any peculiar velocity survey to date. The targets are al… ▽ More The 6dF Galaxy Survey (6dFGS) aims to measure the redshifts of around 150,000 galaxies, and the peculiar velocities of a 15,000-member sub-sample, over almost the entire southern sky. When complete, it will be the largest redshift survey of the nearby universe, reaching out to about z ~ 0.15, and more than an order of magnitude larger than any peculiar velocity survey to date. The targets are all galaxies brighter than K_tot = 12.75 in the 2MASS Extended Source Catalog (XSC), supplemented by 2MASS and SuperCOSMOS galaxies that complete the sample to limits of (H, J, r_F, b_J) = (13.05, 13.75, 15.6, 16.75). Central to the survey is the Six-Degree Field (6dF) multi-fibre spectrograph, an instrument able to record 150 simultaneous spectra over the 5.7-degree field of the UK Schmidt Telescope. An adaptive tiling algorithm has been employed to ensure around 95% fibering completeness over the 17046 sq.deg of the southern sky with | b | > 10 deg. Spectra are obtained in two observations using separate V and R gratings, that together give R ~ 1000 over at least 4000 -- 7500 Angstroms and signal-to-noise ratio ~10 per pixel. The Large Scale Distribution of Galaxies in the Shapley Supercluster

Abstract: We present new results of our wide-field redshift survey of galaxies in a 182 square degree region of the Shapley Supercluster (SSC) based on observations with the FLAIR-II spectrograph on the UK Schmidt Telescope. We present new measurements to give a total sample of redshifts for 710 bright (R<16.6) galaxies, of which 464 are members of the SSC (8000<v<18000 kms). We present new measurements to give a total sample of redshifts for 710 bright (R<16.6) galaxies, of which 464 are members of the SSC (8000<v<18000 kms). Our data reveal that the main plane of the SSC extends further than previously realised, filling the whole extent of our survey region of 10 degrees by 20 degrees on the sky (35 Mpc by 70 Mpc). There is also a significant structure associated with the slightly nearer Abell 3571 cluster complex with a caustic structure evident out to a radius of 6 Mpc. These galaxies seem to link two previously identified sheets of galaxies and establish a connection with a third one at v=15000 kms. They also tend to fill the gap of galaxies between the foreground Hydra-Centaurus region and the more distant SSC. We calculate galaxy overdensities of 5.0+/-0.1 over the 182 square degree region surveyed and 3.3+/-0.1 in a 159 square degree region excluding rich clusters. △ Less

The cluster of galaxies Abell 376

Data on individual galaxies are presented and the accuracy of the determined velocities is discussed as well as some properties of the cluster. We obtained an improved mean redshift value z=0.0478^{+0.005}_{-0.006} and velocity dispersion sigma=852^{+120}_{-76}km/s. Our analysis indicates that inside a radius of 900h_{70}^{-1}kpc (15 arcmin) the cluster is well relaxed without any remarkable feature and the X-ray emission traces fairly well the galaxy distribution. A possible substructure is seen at 20 arcmin from the centre towards the Southwest direction, but is not confirmed by the velocity field. This SW clump is, however, kinematically bound to the main structure of Abell 376. A dense condensation of galaxies is detected at 46 arcmin (projected distance 2.6h_{70}^{-1}Mpc) from the centre towards the Northwest and analysis of the apparent luminosity distribution of its galaxies suggests that this clump is part of the large scale structure of Abell 376. X-ray spectroscopic analysis of ASCA data resulted in a temperature kT = 4.3+/-0.4 keV and metal abundance Z = 0.32+/-0.08 Z_solar. The velocity dispersion corresponding to this temperature using the T_X-sigma scaling relation is in agreement with the measured galaxies velocities. △ Less

BeppoSAX observation of the cluster Abell 970

Abstract: We report new results on the cluster of galaxies Abell 970 obtained from X-ray observation with BeppoSAX. Our analysis of the BeppoSAX MECS and LECS data in the range [0.15-10] keV reveals a mean cluster gas temperature of kT = 4.46_{-0.15}^{+0.14}, a metallicity of Z = 0.31_{-0.04}^{+0.05} Z_\odot, and an interstellar hydrogen absorption density column of N_H = 6.05_{-0.97}^{+1.29} 10^20 cm^-2.… ▽ More We report new results on the cluster of galaxies Abell 970 obtained from X-ray observation with BeppoSAX. Our analysis of the BeppoSAX MECS and LECS data in the range [0.15-10] keV reveals a mean cluster gas temperature of kT = 4.46_{-0.15}^{+0.14}, a metallicity of Z = 0.31_{-0.04}^{+0.05} Z_\odot, and an interstellar hydrogen absorption density column of N_H = 6.05_{-0.97}^{+1.29} 10^20 cm^-2. Moreover, we obtained azimuthally averaged radial profiles of these quantities. Our results are consistent with the hypothesis that Abell 970 has been disturbed by a past merger or by the ongoing merger process of a substructure, that put the cluster out of equilibrium. This is also demonstrated by the offset between the gas and galaxy distributions. Combining the X-ray data with a recently published analysis of new galaxy radial velocities, we conclude that a subcluster 8 arcmin to the NW is falling into Abell 970 and will merge in a few Gigayears, thus disturbing Abell 970's newly acquired equilibrium. The high alpha-elements/iron ratio that we derive for this cluster supports the hypothesis of early intracluster medium enrichment by Type II supernovae. △ Less

FLAIR-II spectroscopy of two DENIS J-band galaxy samples

This study illustrates the feasibility of obtaining z's wi… ▽ More As a pilot survey for the forthcoming 6dF Galaxy Redshift Survey, spectroscopy of galaxies selected in J (1.2 mu) with the DENIS survey was performed at the UKST using the FLAIR II multi-object spectroscope. 69 galaxy redshifts (z's) were obtained in a high |b| field and an additional 12 z's in a low latitude (b=-17 deg), obscured field. This study illustrates the feasibility of obtaining z's with optical spectra on galaxies selected at much longer wavelengths. It validated a very preliminary algorithm for star/galaxy separation for high |b| DENIS objects, with 99% reliability for J < 13.9. However, the FLAIR II z determinations required substantially longer integration times to achieve 90% completeness than expected from previous optical surveys at comparable depth. This is mainly due to a degradation in overall fibre throughput due to known problems with ageing of the prism-cement-fibre interface with exposure to UV light. Our low |b| (high extinction) field required 2.5 times more exposure time for less than 50% of successful z measurements. Among the J <= 13.9 galaxies with measured z's, only 37+/-6% display emission lines, in comparison with 60% of emission-line galaxies (ELGs) in optical samples of comparable depth. The ELGs are, on average, 0.5 mag bluer in B-J than non-ELGs of the same luminosity. We confirm a previous optically-based result that the fraction of ELGs increases rapidly with decreasing galaxy luminosity. The J-band luminosity function is estimated. Our high latitude field displays a concentration of galaxies at cz ~ 38000 km/s suggesting a possible supercluster. A radial velocity is reported for a galaxy lying near the projected centre of the Abell 1434 cluster of galaxies, for which no cluster z is currently available. △ Less

We also found a discrepancy between the masses inferred with the virial theorem and with the X-ray emission, what is expected if the galaxies and the gas inside the cluster are not in hydrostatic equilibrium. Abell 970 has a modest cooling flow, as is expected if it is out of equilibrium as suggested by Allen (1998). We propose that cooling flows may have an intermittent behavior, with phases of massive cooling flows being followed by phases without significant cooling flows after the acretion of a galaxy group massive enough to disrupt the dynamical equilibrium in the center of the clusters. A massive cooling flow will be established again, after a new equilibrium is achieved. △ Less

Dynamics of the X-ray clusters Abell 222, Abell 223 and Abell 520

Our study is based on radial velocities for 71 cluster members, respectively 30 for A222, 20 for A223 and 21 for A520, measured from spectra obtained at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope, the European Southern Observatory, and the Pic du Midi Observatory, and supplemented with radial velocities from the literature. A222 galaxies have slightly higher velocities than those of A223, with bi-weighted mean velocity of V_{bi} = 64242 +/- 194 km/s for A222, and of V_{bi} = 63197 +/- 266 km/s for A223. The velocity dispersions of the two clusters are about the same: sigma_{bi} = 1013 +/- 150 km/s and sigma_{bi} = 1058 +/- 160 km/s for A222 and A223, respectively. For A520 we obtain V_{bi} = 60127 +/- 284 km/s with sigma_{bi} = 1250 +/- 189 km/s. We also give mass and mass-luminosities ratio estimates for each cluster separately. We argue that these clusters are presently undergoing strong dynamical evolution and that A222 and A223 will probably merge in the future. We have applied a Principal Component Analysis to a sample of 51 CFHT spectra to produce a spectral classification for these galaxies. This classification has allowed us to show that the morphological and kinematical segregations were already established in these intermediate redshift clusters. △ Less

(1996). Our study is based on radial velocities for 41 cluster members, measured from spectra obtained at the European Southern Observatory and the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope. We find that Abell 521 is an intermediate-redshift cluster (CBI= 74132 (-250,+202)km/s) with a rather high apparent value of the velocity dispersion (SBI= 1386 (-139,+206) km/s). This high value, which cannot be explained by trivial projection effects, and the significant clum** in the two-dimensional projected positions of the galaxies in the cluster indicate it is still undergoing strong dynamical evolution. The two brightest knots of the giant arc candidate are shown to be at the velocity of the cluster. This makes the gravitational lensing interpretation for the bright curved structure very improbable, although gravitational lensing might still be present in this cluster, as suggested by the colors of two fainter arclet-like structures. △ Less

The galaxies we measured were uniformly distributed over the survey area in contrast to previous samples which were concentrated in several rich Abell clusters. Most of the galaxies (230) were members of the Shapley supercluster: they trace out two previously unknown sheets of galaxies linking the Abell clusters of the supercluster. In a 44 square deg area of the supercluster excluding the Abell clusters, these sheets alone represent an overdensity of a factor of 2.0+/-0.2 compared to a uniform galaxy distribution. The supercluster is not flattened in the Declination direction as was suggested in previous papers. Within our survey area the new galaxies contribute an additional 50% to the known contents of the Shapley supercluster with a corresponding increase in its contribution to the motion of the local group. △ Less

The ESO Slice Project (ESP) Galaxy Redshift Survey. VII. The Redshift and Real-Space Correlation Functions

Abstract: We present analyses of the two-point correlation properties of the ESP galaxy redshift survey. From the redshift-space correlation function xi(s), we see positive clustering out to separations ~50/h Mpc, with a smooth break on larger scales and zero-crossing between 60 and 80/h Mpc. xi(s) is reasonably well described by a shallow power law with γ~1.5 between 3 and 50/h Mpc, while on smaller scal… ▽ More We present analyses of the two-point correlation properties of the ESP galaxy redshift survey. From the redshift-space correlation function xi(s), we see positive clustering out to separations ~50/h Mpc, with a smooth break on larger scales and zero-crossing between 60 and 80/h Mpc. xi(s) is reasonably well described by a shallow power law with γ~1.5 between 3 and 50/h Mpc, while on smaller scales (0.2-2/h Mpc) it has a shallower slope (γ~ 1). We examine the full effect of redshift-space distortions through the two-dimensional correlation function xi(rp,pi), from which we project out the real-space xi(r) below 10/h Mpc. This function is well described by a power-law model (r/r_o)^{-γ}, with r_o=4.15^{+0.20}_{-0.21} h^{-1} Mpc and γ=1.67^{+0.07}_{-0.09}. Comparison to other redshift surveys shows a consistent picture in which clustering remains positive out to separations of 50/h Mpc or larger, in substantial agreement with the results obtained from angular surveys like the APM and EDSGC. Also the shape of the two-point correlation function is remarkably unanimous among these data sets, in all cases requiring more power above 5/h Mpc (a `shoulder'), than a simple extrapolation of the canonical xi(r)=(r/5)^{-1.8}. xi(s) for volume-limited subsamples shows evidence of luminosity segregation only for the most luminous sample with M_{b_J}\le -20.5. When redshift-space distortions are removed through projection of xi(rp,pi), however, a weak dependence on luminosity is seen at small separations also at fainter magnitudes. This effect is masked in redshift space, as the mean pairwise velocity dispersion experiences a parallel increase, basically erasing the effect of the clustering growth on xi(s). △ Less

We find 231 groups above the number overdensity threshold delta(rho)/rho=80 in the redshift range 5000<cz <60000 km/s. These groups contain 1250 members, 40.5% of the 3085 ESP galaxies within the same redshift range. We find 231 groups above the number overdensity threshold delta(rho)/rho=80 in the redshift range 5000<cz <60000 km/s. These groups contain 1250 members, 40.5% of the 3085 ESP galaxies within the same redshift range. The median velocity dispersion (corrected for measurement errors and computed at the redshift of the group) is sigma_{ESP,median} = 194 km/s. We show that our result is reliable in spite of the particular geometry of the ESP survey (two rows of tangent circular fields of radius 15 arcmin), which causes most systems to be only partially surveyed. In general, we find that the properties of ESP groups are consistent with those of groups in shallower (and wider) catalogs (e.g. CfA2N and SSRS2). As in shallower catalogs, ESP groups trace very well the geometry of the large scale structure. Our results are of particular interest because the depth of the ESP survey allows us to sample group properties over a large number of structures. We also compare luminosity function and spectral properties of galaxies that are members of groups with those of isolated galaxies. We find that galaxies in groups have a brighter M* with respect to non--member galaxies; the slope αis the same, within the errors, in the two cases. We find that 34% of ESP galaxies with detectable emission lines are members of groups. The fraction of galaxies without detectable emission lines in groups is significantly higher: 45%. More generally, we find a gradual decrease of the fraction of emission line galaxies among members of systems of increasing richness. This result confirms that the morphology-density relation found for clusters also extends toward systems of lower density. △ Less

Abstract: We present a detailed discussion of the redshift errors associated to the ESO Slice Project measurements. For a subsample of 742 galaxies with redshifts determined both from the absorption lines (V_{abs}) and from the emission lines (V_{emi}), we find an average difference <V_{abs} - V_{emi}> ~ +100$ km/s. We find that a similar effect is present in another, deeper redshift survey, the Durham/An… ▽ More We present a detailed discussion of the redshift errors associated to the ESO Slice Project measurements. We find that a similar effect is present in another, deeper redshift survey, the Durham/Anglo-Australian Telescope faint galaxy redshift survey, while is absent in surveys at brighter magnitude limits. We have investigated in detail many possible sources of such a discrepancy, and we can exclude possible zero-point shifts or calibration problems. We have detected and measured systematic velocity differences produced by the different templates used in the cross-correlation. We conclude that such differences can in principle explain the effect, but in this case the non-trivial implication would be that the best-fitting template does not necessarily give the best velocity estimate. As we do not have any a priori reason to select a template different from the best-fitting one, we did not apply any correction to the ESO Slice Project velocities. However, as for a small number of galaxies the effect is so large that it is likely to have a physical explanation, we have also taken into account the possibility that the discrepancy can be partly real: in this case, it might help to understand the role of gas outflows in the process of galaxy evolution. In view of the future large spectroscopic surveys, we stress the importance of using different templates and making them publicly available, in order to assess the amplitude of systematic effects, and to allow a direct comparison of different catalogues. △ Less

Abstract: The ESO Slice Project (ESP) is a galaxy redshift survey extending over about 23 square degrees, in a region near the South Galactic Pole. Therefore, results conflicting with the ``canonical'' picture would be of the utmost importance. In a number of recent papers it has been suggested that strong evidence of a fractal distribution with dimension D~2 exists in several samples, including Abell clusters [ACO] and galaxies from the ESO Slice Project redshift survey [ESP].Here we report the results of an independent analysis of the radial density run,N(<R)~R^D, of the ESP and ACO data. For the ESP data the situation is such that the explored volume, albeit reasonably deep, is still influenced by the presence of large structures. Moreover, the depth of the ESP survey (z<0.2) is such to cause noticeable effects according to different choices of k-corrections, and this adds some additional uncertainty in the results. However, we find that for a variety of volume limited samples the dimensionality of the ESP sample is D~3, and the value $D = 2$ is always excluded at the level of at least five (bootstrap) standard deviations. The only way in which we reproduce D~2 is by both unphysically ignoring the galaxy k-correction and using Euclidean rather than FRW cosmological distances. In the cluster case the problems related to the choice of metrics and k-correction are much lessened, and we find that ACO clusters have D_{ACO} = 3.07 +- 0.18 and D_{ACO} = 2.93 +- 0.15 for richness class R \geq 1 and R \geq 0, respectively. Therefore D=2 is excluded with high significance also for the cluster data. △ Less

The survey is nearly complete to the limiting magnitude b_J=19.4 and consists of 3342 galaxies with reliable redshift determination. The ESP survey is intermediate between shallow, wide angle samples and very deep, one-dimensional pencil beams: spanning a volume of ~ 5 x 10^4 Mpc^3 at the sensitivity peak (z ~ 0.1), it provides an accurate determination of the "local" luminosity function and the mean galaxy density. We find that, although a Schechter function is an acceptable representation of the luminosity function over the entire range of magnitudes (M < -12.4), our data suggest the presence of a steepening of the luminosity function for M > -17. The amplitude and the alpha and M^* parameters of our luminosity function are in good agreement with those of the AUTOFIB redshift survey (Ellis et al. 1996). Viceversa, our amplitude is significantly higher, by a factor ~ 1.6 at M ~ M^*, than that found for both the Stromlo-APM (Loveday et al. 1992) and the Las Campanas (Lin et al. 1996) redshift surveys. Also the faint end slope of our luminosity function is significantly steeper than that found in these two surveys. Large over- and under- densities are clearly seen in our data. In particular, we find evidence for a "local" underdensity (for D < 140 Mpc) and a significant overdensity at z ~ 0.1. When these radial density variations are taken into account, our derived luminosity function reproduces very well the observed counts for b_J < 19.4, including the steeper than Euclidean slope for b_J < 17. △ Less

In this paper, the first in a series that will present the results of th… ▽ More The ESO Slice Project (ESP) is a galaxy redshift survey we have recently completed as an ESO Key-Project. The ESP covers 23.3 square degrees in a region close to the South Galactic Pole. The survey is nearly complete (85%) to the limiting magnitude b_J=19.4 and consists of 3342 galaxies with reliable redshift determination. In this paper, the first in a series that will present the results of the ESP survey, we describe the main characteristics of the survey and briefly discuss the properties of the galaxy sample. From a preliminary spectral analysis of a large sub-sample of 2550 galaxies we find that the fraction of actively star-forming galaxies increases from a few percent for the brightest galaxies up to about 40% for the galaxies fainter than M= -16.5. The most outstanding feature in the ESP redshift distribution is a very significant peak at z ~ 0.1. The detection of similar peaks, at the same distance, in other surveys in the same region of the sky, suggests the presence of a large bidimensional structure perpendicular to the line of sight. The minimum size of this structure would be of the order of 100 x 50 Mpc, comparable with the size of the Great Wall. △ Less
