Level attraction is a type of mode hybridization in open systems where instead of forming a hybridization gap, the energy spectrum of two modes coalesce in a region bounded by exceptional points. We demonstrate that this phenomenon can be realized in a Floquet system with memory, which appears in describing linear excitations in a nonlinear driven system with a limit cycle. Linear response of the system in this state is different from its response near thermodynamic equilibrium. We develop a general formalism and provide an example in the context of cavity magnonics, where we show that magnetic excitations in systems driven far from the equilibrium may show level attraction with cavity photons. Our approach works equally well for quantum and semiclassical magnetic dynamics. The theory is formulated so that it can be used in combination with micromagnetic simulations to explore a wide range of experimentally interesting systems.

Spin canting and complex spin textures in antiferromagnetic materials can often be described in terms of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions (DMI). Values for DMI parameters are not easily measurable directly, and often inferred from other quantities. In this work, we examine how domain wall dynamics in an antiferromagnetic optomagnonic system can display unique features directly related to the existence of DMI. Our results indicate that the presence of DMI enables spin interactions with cavity photons in a geometry which otherwise allows no magneto-optical coupling, and on the other hand modulates frequencies in a geometry where coupling is already realized in the absence of DMI. This result may be used to measure the DMI constant in optomagnonic experiments by comparing resonances obtained with different polarisations of the exciting field.

Level attraction can appear in driven systems where instead of repulsion two modes coalesce in a region separated by two exceptional points. This behavior was proposed for optomechanical and optomagnonic systems, and recently observed for dissipative cavity magnon-polaritons. We demonstrate that such a regime exists in a spin-orbit torque system where a magnetic oscillator is resonantly coupled to an electron reservoir. An instability mechanism necessary for mode attraction can be provided by applying an electric field. The field excites interband transitions between spin-orbit split bands leading to an instability of the magnetic oscillator. Two exceptional points then appear in the oscillator energy spectrum and the region of instability. We discuss conditions under which this can occur and estimate the electric field strength necessary for reaching the attraction region for a spin-orbit torque oscillator with Rashba coupling. A proposal for experimental detection is made using magnetic susceptibility measurements.

We discuss several aspects of chiral optomagnonics in antiferromagnetic insulators by considering common symmetries between the electromagnetic field and spin excitations. This approach allows us to look at optical and magnetic materials from similar perspectives, and discuss useful analogies between them. We show that spin waves in collinear antiferromagnets and the electromagnetic field in vacuum are both invariant under the same eight-dimensional algebra of symmetry transformations. By such analogy, we can extend the concept of optical chirality to antiferromagnetic insulators, and demonstrate that the spin-wave dynamics in these materials in the presence of a spin current is similar to that of the light inside chiral metamaterials. Photo-excitation of magnonic spin currents is also discussed from the symmetry point of view. It is demonstrated that a direct magnonic spin photocurrent can be exited by circularly polarized light, which can be considered as a magnonic analogue of the photogalvanic effect. We also note that the Zitterbewegung process should appear and may play a role in photo-excitation processes.

We consider the case of a chiral soliton lattice subjected to uniaxial elastic strain applied perpendicular to the chiral axis and derive through analytical modelling the phase diagram of magnetic states supported in the presence of an external magnetic field. The strain induced anisotropies give rise to three distinct non-trivial spin textures, depending on the nature of the strain, and we show how these states may be identified by their signatures in Lorentz transmission electron microscopy (TEM). Experimental TEM measurements of the Fresnel contrast in a strained sample of the prototypical monoaxial chrial helimagnet CrNb$_3$S$_6$ are reported and compare well with the modelled contrast. Our results demonstrate an additional degree of freedom that may be used to tailor the magnetic properties of helimagnets for fundamental research and applications in the areas of spintronics and the emerging field of strain manipulated spintronics.

We discuss various microscopic mechanisms for level attraction in a hybridized magnon-photon system of a ferromagnet in a microwave cavity. The discussion is based upon the electromagnetic theory of continuous media where the effects of the internal magnetization dynamics of the ferromagnet are described using dynamical response functions. This approach is in agreement with quantized multi-oscillator models of coupled photon-magnon dynamics. We demonstrate that to provide the attractive interaction between the modes, the effective response functions should be diamagnetic. Magneto-optical coupling is found to be one mechanism for the effective diamagnetic response, which is proportional to photon number. A dual mechanism based on the Aharonov-Casher effect is also highlighted, which is instead dependent on magnon number.

An optical vortex beam carries orbital angular momentum $\ell$ in addition to spin angular momentum $σ$. We demonstrate that a Landau-quantized two dimensional electron system absorbs the optical vortex beam through modified selection rules, reflecting two kinds of angular momenta. The lowest Landau level electron absorbs the optical vortex beams with $σ=1$ (positive helicity) and $\ell=0$ or $σ=-1$ (negative helicity) and $\ell=2$ in the electric dipole transition. The induced electric currents survive only along the edge of the sample, due to cancellation of the bulk currents. Thus, the magnetization can be induced by only the edge current. It is shown that the induced orbital magnetization disappears when the dark ring of the beam coincides with the disk edge. This scheme may provide a helicity-dependent absorption using the optical vortex beam.

Motivated by experimental findings on the magnetic field-dependence of the resonance frequency in thin films of Cr${}$Nb$_{3} $S${}_{6}$[Goncalves et al., Phys. Rev. B95, 104415 (2017)], we examine the SSW over a chiral soliton lattice (CSL) excited by an ac magnetic field applied parallel and perpendicular to the chiral axis. For this purpose, we generalize Kittel-Pincus theories of the SSW in ferromagnetic thin films to the case of non-collinear helimagnet with the surface end spins which are softly pinned by an anisotropy field. Consequently, we found there appear two types of modes. One is a Pincus mode which is composed of a long-period Bloch wave and a short-period ripple originated from the periodic structure of the CSL. Another is a short-period Kittel ripple excited by space-periodic perturbation which exists only in the case where the ac field is applied perpendicular the chiral axis. We demonstrate that the existence of the Pincus mode and the Kittel ripple is consistent with experimentally found double resonance profile.

Collective dynamics of topological magnetic textures can be thought of as a massive particle moving in a magnetic pinning potential. We demonstrate that inside a cavity resonator this effective mechanical system can feel the electromagnetic radiation pressure from cavity photons through the magneto-optical inverse Faraday and Cotton-Mouton effects. We estimate values for the effective parameters of the optomechanical coupling for two spin textures -- a Bloch domain wall and a chiral magnetic soliton lattice. The soliton lattice has magnetic chirality, so that in circularly polarized light it behaves like a chiral particle with the sign of the optomechanical coupling determined by the helicity of the light and chirality of the lattice. Most interestingly, we find a level attraction regime for the soliton lattice, which is tunable through an applied magnetic field.

In the circular photogalvanic effect, circularly polarized light can produce a direct electron photocurrent in metals and the direction of the current depends on the polarization. We suggest that an analogous nonlinear effect exists for antiferromagnetic insulators wherein the total spin of light and spin waves is conserved. In consequence, a spin angular momentum is expected to be transfered from photons to magnons so that a circularly polarized electromagnetic field will generate a direct magnon spin current. The direction of the current is determined by the helicity of the light. We show that this resonant effect appears as a second order light-matter interaction. We find also a geometric contribution to the spin photocurrent, which appears for materials with complex lattice structures and Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interactions.

We study magnetoelastic resonance phenomena in a mono-axial chiral helimagnet belonging to hexagonal crystal class. By computing the spectrum of coupled elastic wave and spin wave, it is demonstrated how hybridization occurs depending on their chirality. Specific features of the magnetoelastic resonance are discussed for the conical phase and the soliton lattice phase stabilized in the mono-axial chiral helimagnet. The former phase exhibits appreciable non-reciprocity of the spectrum, the latter is characterized by a multi-resonance behavior. We propose that the non-reciprocal spin wave around the forced-ferromagnetic state has potential capability to convert the linearly polarized elastic wave to circularly polarized one with the chirality opposite to the spin wave chirality.

As first demonstrated by Tang and Cohen in chiral optics, the asymmetry in the rate of electromagnetic energy absorption between left and right enantiomers is determined by an optical chirality density [1]. Here, we demonstrate that this effect can exist in magnetic spin systems. By constructing a formal analogy with electrodynamics, we show that in antiferromagnets with broken chiral symmetry the asymmetry in local spin-wave energy absorption is proportional to a spin-wave chirality density, which is a direct counterpart of optical zilch. We propose that injection of a pure spin current into an antiferromagnet may serve as a chiral symmetry breaking mechanism, since its effect in the spin-wave approximation can be expressed in terms of additional Lifshitz invariants. We use linear response theory to show that the spin current induces a nonequilibrium spin-wave chirality density.

A possibility of the topological Kosterlitz-Thouless~(KT) transition in the Pokrovsky-Talapov~(PT) model is investigated by using the functional renormalization-group (RG) approach by Wetterich. Our main finding is that the nonzero misfit parameter of the model, which can be related with the linear gradient term (Dzyaloshinsky-Moriya interaction), makes such a transition impossible, what contradicts the previous consideration of this problem by non-perturbative RG methods. To support the conclusion the initial PT model is reformulated in terms of the 2D theory of relativistic fermions using an analogy between the 2D sine-Gordon and the massive Thirring models. In the new formalism the misfit parameter corresponds to an effective gauge field that enables to include it in the RG procedure on an equal footing with the other parameters of the theory. The Wetterich equation is applied to obtain flow equations for the parameters of the new fermionic action. We demonstrate that these equations reproduce the KT type of behavior if the misfit parameter is zero. However, any small nonzero value of the quantity rules out a possibility of the KT transition. To confirm the finding we develop a description of the problem in terms of the 2D Coulomb gas model. Within the approach the breakdown of the KT scenario gains a transparent meaning, the misfit gives rise to an effective in-plane electric field that prevents a formation of bound vortex-antivortex pairs.

We discuss optical chirality in different types of gyrotropic media. Our analysis is based on the formalism of nongeometric symmetries of Maxwell's equations in vacuum generalized to material media with given constituent relations. This approach enables us to derive directly conservation laws related to the nongeometric symmetries. For isotropic chiral media, we demonstrate that likewise free electromagnetic field, both duality and helicity generators belong to the basis set of nongeometric symmetries that guarantees the conservation of optical chirality. In gyrotropic crystals, which exhibit natural optical activity, the situation is quite different from the case of isotropic media. For light propagating along certain crystallographic direction, there arise two distinct cases, i.~e., (1) the duality is broken but the helicity is preserved, or (2) only the duality symmetry survives. We show that the existence of one of these symmetries (duality or helicity) is enough to define optical chirality. In addition, we present examples of low-symmetry media, where optical chirality can not be defined.

We investigate a longitudinal conductivity of a two-dimensional relativistic electron gas with a tilted Dirac cone in magnetic field. It is demonstrated that the conductivity behaves differently in the directions parallel and perpendicular to the tilting of the cone. At high magnetic fields the conductivity at non-zero Landau levels in the direction perpendicular to the tilting modifies non-trivially, in contrast to the parallel case. At zero temperature the crossover of the conductivity at the Dirac point from high to low magnetic field is studied numerically. It is found that that the tilting produces anisotropy of the conductivity which changes with the magnetic field which is different from the anisotropy coming from the Fermi velocity. We also discuss the conductivity at finite temperatures and finite magnetic fields which can be directly compared with the experiments in $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ organic conductor. We find that the tilting does not affect so much the magnetic-filed dependence of the conductivity except for the prefactor. We discuss the interpretation of recent experimental data and make some proposals to detect the effect of the tilting in future experiments.
