The properties of kagome metals are governed by the interdependence of band topology and electronic correlations resulting in remarkably rich phase diagrams. Here, we study the temperature evolution of the bulk electronic structure of the antiferromagnetic kagome metal FeGe using infrared spectroscopy. We uncover drastic changes in the low-energy interband absorption at the 100 K structural phase transition that has been linked to a charge-density-wave (CDW) instability. We explain this effect by the minuscule Fe displacement in the kagome plane, which results in parallel bands in the vicinity of the Fermi level. In contrast to conventional CDW materials, however, the spectral weight shifts to low energies, ruling out the opening of a CDW gap in FeGe.

The magneto-optical properties of (001)-oriented NbAs single crystals have been studied in the spectral range from 5 to 150 meV and in magnetic fields of up to 13 T. A rich spectrum of inter-Landau-level transitions is revealed by these measurements. The transitions follow a square-root-like dependence with magnetic field, but the simple linear-band approximation is unable to accurately reproduce the observed behavior of the transitions in applied fields. We argue that the detected magneto-optical spectra should be related to crossing hyperbolic bands, which form the W1 cones. We propose a model Hamiltonian, which describes coupled hyperbolic bands and reproduces the shape of the relevant bands in NbAs. The magneto-optical spectra computed from this Hamiltonian nicely reproduce our observations. We conclude that the hyperbolic-band approach is a minimal model to adequately describe the magneto-optical response of NbAs and that the chiral (conical) bands do not explicitly manifest themselves in the spectra.

The electronic bands of GdPtBi are expected to experience large exchange-mediated shifts, which lends itself to a description via effective Zeeman splittings with a large g factor. Based on this approach, along with an ab initio band structure analysis, we propose a model Hamiltonian that describes our observations well and allows us to estimate the effective g factor, g* = 95. We conclude that we directly observe the exchange-induced $Γ_{8}$ band inversion in GdPtBi by means of infrared spectroscopy.

The diverging relaxation time in approaching hypothetical ideal glass transition is a subject of hot debate. In the current paper we demonstrate, how diverging relaxation time and turning excess entropy to zero (which is an essence of Kauzmann's paradox) can be avoided, using as an example the model molecular glassformer, propylene carbonate. For this purpose we compare its thermodynamic and dielectric relaxation properties, both known from the literature. The agreement between two sets of data can be achieved, if we suppose, that enthalpy of supercooled liquid propylene carbonate is governed by activation law, and relaxation time follows double exponential law. We propose the generalized Adam-Gibbs law to reconcile this two dependencies, and qualitatively discuss its implications.

With gradual temperature increase in premelting regions of solid phase of methanol and high pressure phase of ethanol, and using novel procedure of separation of electrode polarization effects, we are able to register the contribution of relaxation process to low-frequency dielectric constant. This contribution is about half the liquid's dielectric constant near temperature of solidification , and is almost an order of magnitude higher than reported earlier for ambient pressure phase of methanol. As opposed to dielectric constant of water at ambient pressure, which does not change much during crystallization, our finding indicates the hindrance of molecule rotation in orientationally disordered phases of monoalcohols. Similar dielectric responses of ambient pressure methanol and high-pressure phase of ethanol imply existence of hindered plastic crystal phase of ethanol (not observed at low pressures). We also have found some dynamic disorder in nominally fully ordered phase of these monoalcohols ($α$-phase of methanol and low-pressure phase of ethanol), the contribution of this disorder being dependent on external conditions (e.g. temperature), and increasing at approaching the order-disorder transition. On the other hand, the amplitude of dielectric responce in hindered plastic crystal phases is almost independent of temperature.

We present an optical conductivity study of the multifold semimetal PdGa, performed in a broad spectral range (100 - 20000 cm-1; 12 meV - 2.5 eV) down to T = 10 K. The conductivity at frequencies below 4000 cm-1 is dominated by free carriers while at higher frequencies interband transitions provide the major contribution. The spectra do not demonstrate a significant temperature evolution: only the intraband part changes as a function of temperature with the plasma frequency remaining constant. The interband contribution to the conductivity exhibits a broad peak at around 5500 cm-1 and increases basically monotonously at frequencies above 9000 cm-1. The band-structure-based computations reproduce these features of the interband conductivity and predict its linear-in-frequency behavior as frequency diminishes.

We investigated magneto-optical response of undoped Bi2Te3 films in the terahertz frequency range (0.3 - 5.1 THz, 10 - 170 cm-1) in magnetic fields up to 10 T. The optical transmission, measured in the Faraday geometry, is dominated by a broad Lorentzian-shaped mode, whose central frequency linearly increases with applied field. In zero field, the Lorentzian is centered at zero frequency, representing hence the free-carrier Drude response. We interpret the mode as a cyclotron resonance (CR) of free carriers in Bi2Te3. Because the mode's frequency position follows a linear magnetic-field dependence and because undoped Bi2Te3 is known to possess an appreciable number of bulk carriers, we associate the mode with a bulk CR. In addition, the cyclotron mass obtained from our measurements fits well the literature data on the bulk effective mass in Bi2Te3. Interestingly, the width of the CR mode demonstrates a behavior non-monotonous in field. We propose that the CR width is defined by two competing factors: impurity scattering, which rate decreases in increasing field, and electron-phonon scattering, which rate exhibits the opposite behavior.

Encapsulation of a single water molecule in fullerene-C60 via chemical surgery provides a unique opportunity to study the distinct rotational dynamics of the water spin isomers at cryogenic temperatures. Here, we employ single-cycle terahertz (THz) pulses to coherently excite the low-frequency rotational motion of ortho- and para-water, encapsulated in fullerene-C60. The THz pulse slightly orients the water electric dipole moments along the field polarization leading to the subsequent emission of electromagnetic waves, which we resolve via the field-free electro-optic sampling technique. At temperatures above ~100 K, the rotation of water in its cage is overdamped and no emission is resolved. At lower temperatures, the water rotation gains a long coherence decay time, allowing observation of the coherent emission for 10-15 ps after the initial excitation. We observe the real-time change of the emission pattern after cooling to 4 K, corresponding to the conversion of a mixture of ortho-water to para-water over the course of 10 hours.

Among different topological and related phases of condensed matter, nodal semimetals occupy a special place - the electronic band topology in these materials is related to three-dimensional bulk, rather than to surface, states. A great variety of different realizations of electronic band crossings (the nodes) leads to a plethora of different electronic properties, ranging from the chiral anomaly to solid-state realizations of a black-hole horizon. The different nodal phases have similar low-energy band structure and quasiparticle dynamics, which both can be accessed experimentally by a number of methods. Optical measurements with their large penetration depth and high energy resolution are ideally suited as such a bulk probe; especially at low energies where other spectroscopic methods often lack the required resolution. In this contribution, we review recent optical-conductivity studies of different nodal semimetals, discuss possible limitations of such measurements, and provide a comparison between the experimental results, simple theoretical models, and band-structure-based calculations.

Landau-level spectroscopy, the optical analysis of electrons in materials subject to a strong magnetic field, is a versatile probe of the electronic band structure and has been successfully used in the identification of novel states of matter such as Dirac electrons, topological materials or Weyl semimetals. The latter arise from a complex interplay between crystal symmetry, spin-orbit interaction and inverse ordering of electronic bands. Here, we report on unusual Landau-level transitions in the monopnictide TaP that decrease in energy with increasing magnetic field. We show that these transitions arise naturally at intermediate energies in time-reversal-invariant Weyl semimetals where the Weyl nodes are formed by a partially gapped nodal-loop in the band structure. We propose a simple theoretical model for electronic bands in these Weyl materials that captures the collected magneto-optical data to great extent.

We measured the reflectivity of the multifold semimetal RhSi in a frequency range from 80 to 20000 cm$^{-1}$ (10 meV - 2.5 eV) at temperatures down to 10 K. The optical conductivity, calculated from the reflectivity, is dominated by the free-carrier (Drude) contribution below 1000 cm$^{-1}$ (120 meV) and by interband transitions at higher frequencies. The temperature-induced changes in the spectra are generally weak: only the Drude bands narrow upon cooling, with an unscreened plasma frequency that is constant with temperature at approximately 1.4 eV, in agreement with a weak temperature dependence of the free-carrier concentration determined by Hall measurements. The interband portion of conductivity exhibits two linear-in-frequency regions below 5000 cm$^{-1}$ ($\sim$ 600 meV), a broad flat maximum at around 6000 cm$^{-1}$ (750 meV), and a further increase starting around 10000 cm$^{-1}$ ($\sim$ 1.2 eV). We assign the linear behavior of the interband conductivity to transitions between the linear bands near the band crossing points. Our findings are in accord with the predictions for the low-energy conductivity behavior in multifold semimetals and with earlier computations based on band structure calculations for RhSi.

The itinerant carriers lead to a Drude-like contribution to the optical response; we can further identify two pronounced phonon modes and interband transitions starting already at rather low frequencies. By comparing our experimental findings to the calculated interband optical conductivity, we can assign the features observed in the measured conductivity to certain interband transitions. In particular, we find that transitions between the electronic bands spilt by spin-orbit coupling dominate the interband conductivity of NbP below 100 meV. At low temperatures, the momentum-relaxing scattering rate of the itinerant carriers in NbP is very small, leading to macroscopic characteristic length scales of the momentum relaxation of approximately 0.5 $μ$m.

This linearity strongly suggests the presence of three-dimensional linear electronic bands with band crossings (nodes) near the chemical potential. Band-structure calculations show the presence of triple points, where one doubly degenerate and one nondegenerate band cross each other in close vicinity of the chemical potential. From a comparison of our data with the optical conductivity computed from the band structure, we conclude that the observed nearly linear $σ_{1}(ω)$ originates as a cumulative effect from all the transitions near the triple points.

ZrSiS exhibits a frequency-independent interband conductivity $σ(ω) = \rm{const}(ω) \equiv σ_{\rm{flat}}$ in a broad range from 250 to 2500 cm$^{-1}$ (30 - 300 meV). This makes ZrSiS similar to (quasi)two-dimensional Dirac electron systems, such as graphite and graphene. We assign the flat optical conductivity to the transitions between quasi-two-dimensional Dirac bands near the Fermi level. In contrast to graphene, $σ_{\rm{flat}}$ is not supposed to be universal but related to the length of the nodal line in the reciprocal space, $k_{0}$. When $σ_{\rm{flat}}$ and $k_{0}$ are connected by a simple model, we find good agreement between experiment and theory. Due to the spin-orbit coupling, the discussed Dirac bands in ZrSiS possess a small gap $Δ$, for which we determine an upper bound max($Δ$) = 30 meV from our optical measurements. At low temperatures the momentum-relaxation rate collapses, and the characteristic length scale of momentum relaxation is of the order of microns below 50 K.

We investigated transport, magnetotransport, and broadband optical properties of the half-Heusler compound YbPtBi. Hall measurements evidence two types of charge carriers: highly mobile electrons with a temperature-dependent concentration and low-mobile holes; their concentration stays almost constant within the investigated temperature range from 2.5 to 300 K. The optical spectra (10 meV - 2.7 eV) can be naturally decomposed into contributions from intra- and interband absorption processes, the former manifesting themselves as two Drude bands with very different scattering rates, corresponding to the charges with different mobilities. These results of the optical measurements allow us to separate the contributions from electrons and holes to the total conductivity and to implement a two-channel-conduction model for description of the magnetotransport data. In this approach, the electron and hole mobilities are found to be around 50000 and 10 cm$^{2}$/Vs at the lowest temperatures (2.5 K), respectively.

We present a broadband optical-conductivity study of superconducting single-crystalline EuFe2(As1-xPx)2 with three different substitutional levels. We analyze the normal-state electrodynamics by decomposing the conductivity spectra using a Drude-Lorentz model with two Drude terms representing two groups of carriers with different scattering rates. The analysis reveals that the scattering rate of at least one of the Drude components develops linearly with temperature for each do** level. This points towards strong electron-electron correlations and a non-Fermi-liquid behavior in the P-substituted superconducting Eu-122 pnictides. We also detect a transfer of the spectral weight from mid-infrared to higher frequencies and assign it to the Hund's-rule coupling between itinerant and localized carriers. The conductivity spectra below the superconducting transition show no sharp features to be associated with the dirty-limit superconducting BCS gaps. We interpret these results in terms of clean-limit superconductivity in EuFe2(As1-xPx)2. The best parametrization fit can be achieved using a two-gap model. We find that the larger gap at the hole pockets of the Fermi surface is likely to be isotropic, while the smaller gap at the electron pockets is anisotropic or even nodal.

Infrared optical investigations of $α$-(BEDT-TTF)$_2$I$_3$ have been performed in the spectral range from 80 to 8000~cm$^{-1}$ down to temperatures as low as 10~K by applying hydrostatic pressure. In the metallic state, $T > 135$~K, we observe a 50\% increase in the Drude contribution as well as the mid-infrared band due to the growing intermolecular orbital overlap with pressure up to 11~kbar. In the ordered state, $T<T_{\rm CO}$, we extract how the electronic charge per molecule varies with temperature and pressure: Transport and optical studies demonstrate that charge order and metal-insulator transition coincide and consistently yield a linear decrease of the transition temperature $T_{\rm CO}$ by $8-9$~K/kbar. The charge disproportionation $Δρ$ diminishes by $0.017~e$/kbar and the optical gap $Δ$ between the bands decreases with pressure by -47~cm$^{-1}$/kbar. In our high-pressure and low-temperature experiments, we do observe contributions from the massive charge carriers as well as from massless Dirac electrons to the low-frequency optical conductivity, however, without being able to disentangle them unambiguously.

This behavior is caused by interband transitions between two Dirac bands, which are effectively described by a sublinear dispersion relation, $E(k) \propto \lvert k \rvert ^{0.6}$. The momentum-averaged Fermi velocity of the carriers in these bands is energy dependent and ranges from $1.2 \times 10^{5}$ to $3 \times 10^{5}$ m/s, depending on the distance from the Dirac points. We detect a gaplike feature in $σ_{1}(ω)$ and associate it with the Fermi level positioned around $100$ meV above the Dirac points.

The optical spectra do not reveal any indication of a normal-state gap formation. A Drude-like peak centered at zero frequency dominates the optical conductivity below 150 K. At higher temperatures, it shifts to finite frequencies. The detailed analysis of the low-frequency conductivity reveals that the Drude peak and a far-infrared (FIR) peak centered at about 300 cm$^{-1}$ persist at all temperatures. The FIR-peak spectral weight is found to grow at the expense of the Drude spectral weight with increasing temperature. The temperature dependence of the penetration depth follows a behavior typical for $d$-wave superconductors. The absolute value of the penetration depth for zero temperature is 1.6 $μ$m, indicating a rather low density of the superconducting condensate.

We present the high pressure dielectric spectroscopy (up to 4.2 GPa) and ultrasonic study (up to 1.7 GPa) of liquid and glassy propylene carbonate (PC). Both of the methods provide complementary pictures of the glass transition in PC under pressure. No other relaxation processes except $α$-relaxation have been found in the studied pressure interval. The propylene carbonate liquid is a glassformer where simple relaxation and the absence of $β$-relaxation are registered in the record-breaking ranges of pressures and densities. The equation of state of liquid PC was extended up to 1 GPa from ultrasonic measurements of bulk modulus and is in good accordance with the previous equations developed from volumetric data. We measured the bulk and shear moduli and Poisson's ratio of glassy PC up to 1.7 GPa. Many relaxation and elastic properties of PC can be qualitatively described by the soft-sphere or Lennard-Jones model. However, for the quantitative description of entire set of the experimental data, these models are insufficient. Moreover, the Poisson coefficient value for glassy PC indicates a significant contribution of non-central forces to the intermolecular potential. The well-known correlation between Poisson's ratio and fragility index (obtained from dielectric relaxation) is confirmed for PC at ambient pressure, but it is violated with pressure increase. This indicates that different features of the potential energy landscape are responsible for the evolution of dielectric response and elasticity with pressure increase.

Below the ferrimagnetic transition (94 K), the terahertz response of CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ is dominated by a magnon mode, which shows a steep magnetic-field dependence. We ascribe this mode to an exchange resonance between two magnetic sublattices with different $g$-factors. In the framework of a simple two-sublattice model (the sublattices are formed by Co$^{2+}$ and Cr$^{3+}$ ions), we find the inter-sublattice coupling constant, $λ= - (18 \pm 1)$ K, and trace the magnetization for each sublattice as a function of field. We show that the Curie temperature of the Cr$^{3+}$ sublattice, $Θ_{2}$ = $(49 \pm 2)$ K, coincides with the temperature range, where anomalies of the dielectric and magnetic properties of CoCr$_{2}$O$_{4}$ have been reported in literature.

The dielectric spectrum of liquid water, $10^{4} - 10^{11}$ Hz, is interpreted in terms of diffusion of charges, formed as a result of self-ionization of H$_{2}$O molecules. This approach explains the Debye relaxation and the dc conductivity as two manifestations of this diffusion. The Debye relaxation is due to the charge diffusion with a fast recombination rate, $1/τ_{2}$, while the dc conductivity is a manifestation of the diffusion with a much slower recombination rate, $1/τ_{1}$. Applying a simple model based on Brownian-like diffusion, we find $τ_{2} \simeq 10^{-11}$ s and $τ_{1} \simeq 10^{-6}$ s, and the concentrations of the charge carriers, involved in each of the two processes, $N_{2} \simeq 5 \times 10^{26}$ m$^{-3}$ and $N_{1} \simeq 10^{14}$ m$^{-3}$. Further, we relate $N_{2}$ and $N_{1}$ to the total concentration of H$_{3}$O$^{+}$--OH$^{-}$ pairs and to the pH index, respectively, and find the lifetime of a single water molecule, $τ_{0} \simeq 10^{-9}$ s. Finally, we show that the high permittivity of water results mostly from flickering of separated charges, rather than from reorientations of intact molecular dipoles.

The terahertz spectra can be well described within the framework of Eliashberg theory with strong electron-phonon coupling: the zero-temperature energy gap is 2Δ(0) = 2.64 meV and 2Δ(0)/k_{B}T_{c} = 4.6 \pm 0.1, consistent with the amorphous state of Ga. At temperatures just above T_{c}, the optical spectra demonstrate Drude behavior.

The temperature dependence of the penetration depth, calculated from $σ_{2}$, shows power-law behavior at the lowest temperatures. Analysis of the conductivity data with a two-gap model, gives the smaller isotropic s-wave gap of $Δ_{A} = 3$ meV, while the larger gap is highly anisotropic with possible nodes and its rms amplitude is $Δ_{0} = 8$ meV. However, for some of these liquids, no well-pronounced secondary relaxation is observed. A prominent example is the archetypical glass-forming liquid glycerol. In the present work, by performing dielectric spectroscopy under superhigh pressures up to 6 GPa, we show that in glycerol a significant secondary relaxation peak appears in the dielectric loss at P > 3 GPa. We identify this beta-relaxation to be of Johari-Goldstein type and discuss its relation to the excess wing. We provide evidence for a smooth but significant increase of glass-transition temperature and fragility on increasing pressure.

We extend the physics case for a new high-energy, ultra-high statistics neutrino scattering experiment, NuSOnG (Neutrino Scattering On Glass) to address a variety of issues including precision QCD measurements, extraction of structure functions, and the derived Parton Distribution Functions (PDFs). This experiment uses a Tevatron-based neutrino beam to obtain a sample of Deep Inelastic Scattering (DIS) events which is over two orders of magnitude larger than past samples. We outline an innovative method for fitting the structure functions using a parameterized energy shift which yields reduced systematic uncertainties. High statistics measurements, in combination with improved systematics, will enable NuSOnG to perform discerning tests of fundamental Standard Model parameters as we search for deviations which may hint of "Beyond the Standard Model" physics.

The search for new materials with extremely high ("colossal") dielectric constants, required for future electronics, is one of the most active fields of modern materials science. However, the applicability of the colossal-epsilon' materials, discovered so far, suffers from the fact that their dielectric constant, epsilon', only is huge in a limited frequency range below about 1 MHz. In the present report, we show that the dielectric properties of La15/8Sr1/8NiO4 surpass those of other materials. Especially, epsilon' retains its colossal magnitude of >10000 well into the GHz range. This material is prone to charge order and this spontaneous ordering process of the electronic subsystem can be assumed to play an important role in the generation of the observed unusual dielectric properties.

This article presents the physics case for a new high-energy, ultra-high statistics neutrino scattering experiment, NuSOnG (Neutrino Scattering on Glass). This experiment uses a Tevatron-based neutrino beam to obtain over an order of magnitude higher statistics than presently available for the purely weak processes $ν_μ+e^- \to ν_μ+ e^-$ and $ν_μ+ e^- \to ν_e + μ^-$. A sample of Deep Inelastic Scattering events which is over two orders of magnitude larger than past samples will also be obtained. As a result, NuSOnG will be unique among present and planned experiments for its ability to probe neutrino couplings to Beyond the Standard Model physics. Many Beyond Standard Model theories physics predict a rich hierarchy of TeV-scale new states that can correct neutrino cross-sections, through modifications of $Zνν$ couplings, tree-level exchanges of new particles such as $Z^\prime$s, or through loop-level oblique corrections to gauge boson propagators. These corrections are generic in theories of extra dimensions, extended gauge symmetries, supersymmetry, and more. The sensitivity of NuSOnG to this new physics extends beyond 5 TeV mass scales. This article reviews these physics opportunities.

New physics beyond the Standard Model can lead to extra matter effects on neutrino oscillation if the new interactions distinguish among the three flavors of neutrino. In a previous paper, we argued that a long-baseline neutrino oscillation experiment in which the Fermilab-NUMI beam in its high-energy mode is aimed at the planned Hyper-Kamiokande detector would be capable of constraining the size of those extra effects, provided the vacuum value of \sin^2 2θ_{23} is not too close to one. In this paper, we discuss how such a constraint would translate into limits on the coupling constants and masses of new particles in various models. The models we consider are: models with generation distinguishing Z's such as topcolor assisted technicolor, models containing various types of leptoquarks, R-parity violating SUSY, and extended Higgs sector models. In several cases, we find that the limits thus obtained could be competitive with those expected from direct searches at the LHC. In the event that any of the particles discussed here are discovered at the LHC, then the observation, or non-observation, of their matter effects could help in identifying what type of particle had been observed.

We study the lifetimes of TeV-scale heavy neutral leptons (Majorana neutrinos) that appear in a model suggested by Okamura et al. [2]. We develop a convenient way to parametrize the neutrino mass texture of the model, and illustrate our method by calculating the mass spectrum, decay widths, and lifetimes of the heavy particles over the entire parameter space. From the mass spectrum, we find that for most of the parameter space, only two-body decays are relevant in the calculation of the lifetime, with typical values falling in the range of 10^(-26) to 10^(-24) seconds. If the particles discussed here are created at colliders, their lifetimes are short enough for them to decay inside the detector, while long enough to lead to a narrow peak in the invariant mass spectrum of the decay products. However, an analysis by Dicus, Karatas, and Roy [16] suggests that they may be difficult to observe at the LHC.

Quantitative EPR line shape analysis allowed concluding that low temperature magnetic susceptibility for T <40 K diverges following power law with the critical exponent 0.81 and therefore manifests onset of a quantum critical (QC) regime. We argue that transition into Griffiths phase occurs at TG~40 K and disorder produced by Mn impurity in quantum spin chains of CuGeO3 may lead to co-existence of the QC regime and spin-Peierls dimerisation.

Here we report the first results on the frequency scaling of the conductivity. Samples were brought from the insulating to the metallic phase by carrier do** via illumination. In the metallic phase, the sub-terahertz conductivity coincides with the dc data. These results do not agree with the simplest picture of a quantum-phase transition.
