Therefore, we present much needed inelastic x-ray scattering measurements of its acoustic phonon dispersion, along with calculations using the frozen-phonon method. We also discuss a temperature study which conclusively shows a first-order structural transition to a non-$C2/m$ space group at low temperature. Together these results are an important backbone for future theoretical and experimental studies of $α$-RuCl$_3$.

We present magnetization measurements carried out on polycrystalline and single-crystalline samples of $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ under hydrostatic pressures up to 2 GPa and establish the temperature-pressure phase diagram of this material. The Néel temperature ($T_{\rm{N}}$) of $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ is slightly enhanced upon compression with $dT_{\rm{N}}/dp$ = 1.5 K/GPa. Above 1.2 GPa, $α$-Li$_2$IrO$_3$ undergoes a first-order phase transition toward a nonmagnetic dimerized phase, with no traces of the magnetic phase observed above 1.8 GPa at low temperatures. The critical pressure of the structural dimerization is strongly temperature-dependent. This temperature dependence is well reproduced on the ab initio level by taking into account lower phonon entropy in the nonmagnetic phase. We further show that the initial increase in $T_{\rm{N}}$ of the magnetic phase is due to a weakening of the Kitaev interaction $K$ along with the enhancement of the Heisenberg term $J$ and off-diagonal anisotropy $Γ$. Our study reveals a common thread in the interplay of magnetism and dimerization in pressured Kitaev materials.

Metallic iridium oxides (iridates) provide a fertile playground to explore new phenomena resulting from the interplay between topological protection, spin-orbit and electron-electron interactions. To date, however, few studies of the low energy electronic excitations exist due to the difficulty in synthesising crystals with sufficiently large carrier mean-free-paths. Here, we report the observation of Shubnikov-de Haas quantum oscillations in high-quality single crystals of monoclinic SrIrO$_3$ in magnetic fields up to 35~T. Analysis of the oscillations reveals a Fermi surface comprising multiple small pockets with effective masses up to 4.5 times larger than the calculated band mass. \textit{Ab-initio} calculations reveal robust linear band-crossings at the Brillouin zone boundary, due to its non-symmorphic symmetry, and overall we find good agreement between the angular dependence of the oscillations and the theoretical expectations. Further evidence of strong electron correlations is realized through the observation of signatures of non-Fermi liquid transport as well as a large Kadowaki-Woods ratio. These collective findings, coupled with knowledge of the evolution of the electronic state across the Ruddlesden-Popper iridate series, establishes monoclinic SrIrO$_3$ as a topological semimetal on the boundary of the Mott metal-insulator transition.

Crystal structure, electronic state of Ir$^{4+}$, and magnetic properties of the antifluorite compound K$_2$IrBr$_6$ are studied using high-resolution synchrotron x-ray diffraction, resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), thermodynamic and transport measurements, and ab initio calculations. The crystal symmetry is reduced from cubic at room temperature to tetragonal below 170 K and eventually to monoclinic below 122 K. These changes are tracked by the evolution of the non-cubic crystal-field splitting $Δ$ measured by RIXS. Non-monotonic changes in $Δ$ are ascribed to the competing effects of the tilt, rotation, and deformation of the IrBr$_6$ octahedra as well as tetragonal strain on the electronic levels of Ir$^{4+}$. The Néel temperature of $T_N=11.9$ K exceeds that of the isostructural K$_2$IrCl$_6$, and the magnitude of frustration on the fcc spin lattice decreases. We argue that the replacement of Cl by Br weakens electronic correlations and enhances magnetic couplings.

Screening in reduced dimensions has strong consequences on the electronic properties in van der Waals semiconductors, impacting the quasiparticle band gap and exciton binding energy. Screening in these materials is typically treated isotropically, yet black phosphorus exhibits in-plane electronic anisotropy seen in its effective mass, carrier mobility, excitonic wavefunctions, and plasmonic dispersion. Here, we use the adsorption of individual potassium atoms on the surface of black phosphorus to vary the near-surface do** over a wide range, while simultaneously probing the dielectric screening via the ordering of the adsorbed atoms. Using scanning tunneling microscopy, we visualize the role of strongly anisotropic screening which leads to the formation of potassium chains with a well-defined orientation and spacing. We quantify the mean interaction potential utilizing statistical methods and find that the dimensionality and anisotropy of the screening is consistent with the presence of a band-bending induced confinement potential near the surface. We corroborate the observed behavior with coverage-dependent studies of the electronic structure with angle-resolved photoemission.

The mixing of orbital and spin character in the wave functions of the $5d$ iridates has led to predictions of strong couplings among their lattice, electronic and magnetic degrees of freedom. As well as realizing a novel spin-orbit assisted Mott-insulating ground state, the perovskite iridate Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ has strong similarities with the cuprate La$_{2}$CuO$_{4}$, which on do** hosts a charge-density wave that appears intimately connected to high-temperature superconductivity. These phenomena can be sensitively probed through momentum-resolved measurements of the lattice dynamics, made possible by meV-resolution inelastic x-ray scattering. Here we report the first such measurements for both parent and electron-doped Sr$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$. We find that the low-energy phonon dispersions and intensities in both compounds are well described by the same nonmagnetic density functional theory calculation. In the parent compound, no changes of the phonons on magnetic ordering are discernible within the experimental resolution, and in the doped compound no anomalies are apparent due to charge-density waves. These measurements extend our knowledge of the lattice properties of (Sr$_{1-x}$La$_{x}$)$_{2}$IrO$_{4}$ and constrain the couplings of the phonons to magnetic and charge order.

Cubic crystal structure and regular octahedral environment of Ir$^{4+}$ render antifluorite-type K$_2$IrCl$_6$ a model fcc antiferromagnet with a combination of Heisenberg and Kitaev exchange interactions. High-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction confirms cubic symmetry down to at least 20 K, with a low-energy rotary mode gradually suppressed upon cooling. Using thermodynamic and transport measurements, we estimate the activation energy of $Δ\simeq 0.7$ eV for charge transport, the antiferromagnetic Curie-Weiss temperature of $θ_{\rm CW}\simeq -43$ K, and the extrapolated saturation field of $H_s\simeq 87$ T. All these parameters are well reproduced \textit{ab initio} using $U_{\rm eff}=2.2$ eV as the effective Coulomb repulsion parameter. The antiferromagnetic Kitaev exchange term of $K\simeq 5$ K is about one half of the Heisenberg term $J\simeq 13$ K. While this combination removes a large part of the classical ground-state degeneracy, the selection of the unique magnetic ground state additionally requires a weak second-neighbor exchange coupling $J_2\simeq 0.2$ K. Our results suggest that K$_2$IrCl$_6$ may offer the best possible cubic conditions for Ir$^{4+}$ and demonstrates the interplay of geometrical and exchange frustration in a high-symmetry setting.

Fractionalized excitations are of considerable interest in recent condensed-matter physics. Fractionalization of the spin degrees of freedom into localized and itinerant Majorana fermions are predicted for the Kitaev spin liquid, an exactly solvable model with bond-dependent interactions on a two-dimensional honeycomb lattice. As function of temperature, theory predicts a characteristic two-peak structure of the heat capacity as fingerprint of these excitations. Here we report on detailed heat-capacity experiments as function of temperature and magnetic field in high-quality single crystals of α-RuCl3 and undertook considerable efforts to determine the exact phonon background. We measured single-crystalline RhCl3 as non-magnetic reference and performed ab-initio calculations of the phonon density of states for both compounds. These ab-initio calculations document that the intrinsic phonon contribution to the heat capacity cannot be obtained by a simple rescaling of the nonmagnetic reference using differences in the atomic masses. Sizable renormalization is required even for non-magnetic RhCl3 with its minute difference from the title compound. In α-RuCl3 in zero magnetic field, excess heat capacity exists at temperatures well above the onset of magnetic order. In external magnetic fields far beyond quantum criticality, when long-range magnetic order is fully suppressed, the excess heat capacity exhibits the characteristic two-peak structure. In zero field, the lower peak just appears at temperatures around the onset of magnetic order and seems to be connected with canonical spin degrees of freedom. At higher fields, beyond the critical field, this peak is shifted to 10 K. The high-temperature peak located around 50 K is hardly influenced by external magnetic fields, carries the predicted amount of entropy, R/2 ln2, and may resemble remnants of Kitaev physics.

We report on a theoretical study of collective electronic excitations in single-layer antimony crystals (antimonene), a novel two-dimensional semiconductor with strong spin-orbit coupling. Based on a tight-binding model, we consider electron-doped antimonene and demonstrate that the combination of spin-orbit effects with external bias gives rise to peculiar plasmon excitations in the mid-infrared spectral range. These excitations are characterized by low losses and negative dispersion at frequencies effectively tunable by do** and bias voltage. The observed behavior is attributed to the spin-splitting of the conduction band, which induces interband resonances, affecting the collective excitations. Our findings open up the possibility to develop plasmonic and optoelectronic devices with high tunability, operating in a technologically relevant spectral range.

Coulomb interaction and its screening play an important role in many physical phenomena of materials ranging from optical properties to many-body effects including superconductivity. Here, we report on a systematic study of dielectric screening in few-layer black phosphorus (BP), a two-dimensional material with promising electronic and optical characteristics. We use a combination of a tight-binding model and rigorously determined bare Coulomb interactions, which allows us to consider relevant microscopic effects beyond the long-wavelength limit. We calculate the dielectric function of few-layer BP in the random phase approximation and show that it exhibits strongly anisotropic behavior even in the static limit. We also estimate the strength of effective local and non-local Coulomb interactions and determine their do** dependence. We find that the $p_z$ states responsible for low-energy excitations in BP provide a moderate contribution to the screening, weakening the on-site Coulomb interaction by less that a factor of two. Finally, we calculate the full plasmon spectrum of few-layer BP and discuss the effects beyond long-wavelengths.

Density-functional calculations of lattice dynamics and high-resolution synchrotron powder diffraction uncover antiferroelectric distortion in the kagome francisite Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3$)$_2$O$_2$Cl below 115K. Its Br-containing analogue is stable in the room-temperature crystal structure down to at least 10K, although the Br compound is on the verge of a similar antiferroelectric instability and reveals local displacements of Cu and Br atoms. The I-containing compound is stable in its room-temperature structure according to density-functional calculations. We show that the distortion involves cooperative displacements of Cu and Cl atoms, and originates from the optimization of interatomic distances for weakly bonded halogen atoms. The distortion introduces a tangible deformation of the kagome spin lattice and may be responsible for the reduced net magnetization of the Cl compound compared to the Br one. The polar structure of Cu$_3$Bi(SeO$_3$)$_2$O$_2$Cl is only slightly higher in energy than the non-polar antiferroelectric structure, but no convincing evidence of its formation could be obtained.

We perform a systematic first-principles study of phosphorene in the presence of typical monovalent (hydrogen, fluorine) and divalent (oxygen) impurities. The results of our modeling suggest a decomposition of phosphorene into weakly bonded one-dimensional (1D) chains upon single- and double-side hydrogenation and fluorination. In spite of a sizable quasiparticle band gap (2.29 eV), fully hydrogenated phosphorene found to be dynamically unstable. In contrast, full fluorination of phosphorene gives rise to a stable structure, being an indirect gap semiconductor with the band gap of 2.27 eV. We also show that fluorination of phosphorene from the gas phase is significantly more likely than hydrogenation due to the relatively low energy barrier for the dissociative adsorption of F2 (0.19 eV) compared to H2 (2.54 eV). At low concentrations, monovalent impurities tend to form regular atomic rows phosphorene, though such patterns do not seem to be easily achievable due to high migration barriers (1.09 and 2.81 eV for H2 and F2, respectively). Oxidation of phosphorene is shown to be a qualitatively different process. Particularly, we observe instability of phosphorene upon oxidation, leading to the formation of disordered amorphous-like structures at high concentrations of impurities.
