The discovery of high-temperature superconductivity in La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ at pressures above 14 GPa has spurred extensive research efforts. Yet, fundamental aspects of the superconducting phase, including the possibility of a filamentary character, are currently subjects of controversial debates. Conversely, a crystal structure with NiO$_6$ octahedral bilayers stacked along the $c$-axis direction was consistently posited in initial studies on La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$. Here we reassess this structure in optical floating zone-grown La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$ single crystals that show signs of filamentary superconductivity. Employing scanning transmission electron microscopy and single-crystal x-ray diffraction under high pressures, we observe multiple crystallographic phases in these crystals, with the majority phase exhibiting alternating monolayers and trilayers of NiO$_6$ octahedra, signifying a profound deviation from the previously suggested bilayer structure. Using density functional theory, we disentangle the individual contributions of the monolayer and trilayer structural units to the electronic band structure of La$_3$Ni$_2$O$_7$, providing a firm basis for advanced theoretical modeling and future evaluations of the potential of the monolayer-trilayer structure for hosting superconductivity.

2H-NbSe2 is an archetypal system in which superconductivity and charge-density-wave (CDW) coexist and compete macroscopically with each other. In particular, this interplay also manifests in their dynamical fluctuations. As a result, the superconducting amplitude fluctuations (i.e. Higgs mode) is pushed below the quasiparticle continuum, allowing it to become a coherent excitation observable by Raman scattering. In the present study, we coherently drive the collective oscillations of the two orders and visualize their interplay in the driven states in the time domain. We find that both collective modes contribute to terahertz third harmonic generation (THG) and the THG signals interfere below Tc, leading to an anti-resonance of the integrated THG signal. The dynamical Ginzburg-Landau model suggests that around the anti-resonance a periodic energy transfer between the driven Higgs oscillations and the driven CDW oscillations is possible. In addition to 2H-NbSe2, we also studied an underdoped La2-xSrxCuO4 (x ~ 0.12) driven beyond the perturbative regime of THG. A similar interference between two sources of THG is observed below Tc. While there might be additional sources of THG in these experiments, our results illustrate the roles of coupled modes in the terahertz THG process and the tantalizing possibility of coherent control via such couplings.

Terahertz (THz) radiation is a powerful tool with widespread applications ranging from imaging, sensing, and broadband communications to spectroscopy and nonlinear control of materials. Future progress in THz technology depends on the development of efficient, structurally simple THz emitters that can be implemented in advanced miniaturized devices. Here we show how the natural electronic anisotropy of layered conducting transition metal oxides enables the generation of intense terahertz radiation via the transverse thermoelectric effect. In thin films grown on offcut substrates, femtosecond laser pulses generate ultrafast out-of-plane temperature gradients, which in turn launch in-plane thermoelectric currents, thus allowing efficient emission of the resulting THz field out of the film structure. We demonstrate this scheme in experiments on thin films of the layered metals PdCoO2 and La1.84Sr0.16CuO4, and present model calculations that elucidate the influence of the material parameters on the intensity and spectral characteristics of the emitted THz field. Due to its simplicity, the method opens up a promising avenue for the development of highly versatile THz sources and integrable emitter elements.

Achieving fundamental understanding of insulator-to-metal transitions (IMTs) in strongly correlated systems and their persistent and reversible control via nonequilibrium drive are prime targets of current condensed matter research. Photoinduced switching between competing orders in correlated insulators requires a free-energy landscape with nearly degenerate ground states, which is commonly reached through do**, strain, or static electric field. The associated spatial inhomogeneity leads to a photoinduced phase transition that remains confined near the illuminated region. Here we report optical spectroscopy experiments at the first-order IMT in the 4d-electron compound Ca$_3$(Ru$_{0.99}$Ti$_{0.01}$)$_2$O$_7$ and show that specific Ru d-d interband transitions excited by light with a threshold fluence corresponding to the planar density of Ru atoms can trigger reversible, avalanche-like coherent propagation of phase interfaces across the full extent of a macroscopic sample, in the absence of assisting external stimuli. Based on detailed comparison of spectroscopic data to density functional calculations, we attribute the extraordinary photo-sensitivity of the IMT to an exceptionally shallow free-energy landscape generated by the confluence of electron-electron and electron-lattice interactions. Our findings suggest Ca$_3$(Ru$_{0.99}$Ti$_{0.01}$)$_2$O$_7$ as an ideal model system for building and testing a theory of Mott transition dynamics in the presence of strong electron-lattice coupling and may pave the way towards nanoscale devices with quantum-level photosensitivity.
