The interplay between competing degrees of freedom can stabilize non-trivial magnetic states in correlated electron materials. Frustration-induced strong quantum fluctuations can evade long-range magnetic ordering leading to exotic quantum states such as spin liquids in two-dimensional spin-lattices such as triangular and kagome structures. However, the experimental realization of dynamic and correlated quantum states is rare in three-dimensional (3D) frustrated magnets wherein quantum fluctuations are less prominent. Herein, we report the crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility, electron spin resonance (ESR) and specific heat studies accompanied by crystal electric field (CEF) calculations on a 3D frustrated magnet Yb3Sc2Ga3O12. In this material, Yb3+ ions form a three-dimensional network of corner-sharing triangles known as hyperkagome lattice without any detectable anti-site disorder. Our results reveal a low energy state with Jeff = 1/2 degrees of freedom in the Kramers doublet state. The zero field-cooled and field cooled magnetic susceptibility taken in 0.001 T rules out the presence of spin-freezing down to 1.8K. The Curie-Weiss (CW) fit to low-T susceptibility data yields a small and negative CW temperature indicating the presence of a weak antiferromagnetic interaction between Jeff = 1/2 (Yb3+) moments. The Yb-ESR displays a broad line of non-Lorentzian shape that suggests considerable magnetic anisotropy in Yb3Sc2Ga3O12. The CEF calculations suggest that the ground state is well separated from the excited states, which are in good agreement with experimental results. The absence of long-range magnetic ordering indicates a dynamic liquid-like ground state at least down to 130 mK. Furthermore, zero field specific heat shows a broad maximum around 200 mK suggesting the presence of short-range spin correlations in this 3D frustrated antiferromagnet.

In frustrated spin-1/2 chains the competition between the nearest- and next-nearest-neighbor exchange interactions leads to a rich phase diagram that becomes even richer in the presence of perturbations in their material realizations. These effects are still largely unexplored, so that new insight into static and dynamic magnetism, in particular by sensitive local probes, is highly desired. Here we present a comprehensive $^{17}$O nuclear magnetic resonance study of $β$-TeVO$_4$, where the anisotropy of the main exchange interactions and additional weak interchain exchange interactions complement the theoretical phase diagram. Our results confirm the dynamical nature of the intriguing spin-stripe phase that has been reported in previous studies. In addition, we find that the magnetic order in the high-field phase, which develops just below the magnetization saturation, is consistent with an unusual type of spin-density-wave (SDW) order with different alignments of the magnetic moments on the neighboring chains. This is reminiscent of the ordering in the SDW phase, realized in the absence of the magnetic field, and is thus most likely stabilized by magnetic anisotropy.

Frustration, spin correlations and interplay between competing degrees of freedom are some of the key ingredients that underlie exotic states with fractional excitations in quantum materials. Rare-earth based two dimensional magnetic lattice wherein crystal electric field, spin-orbit coupling, anisotropy and electron correlation between rare-earth moments offer a new paradigm in this context. Herein, we present crystal structure, magnetic susceptibility and specific heat accompanied by crystal electric field calculations on the polycrystalline sample of Ba3RB9O18 (R = Yb, Er) in which R3+ ions form a perfect triangular lattice without anti-site disorder. The localized R3+ spins show neither long-range order nor spin-glass state down to 1.9 K in Ba3RB9O18. Magnetization data reveal a pseudospin Jeff = 1/2 ( Yb3+) in the Kramers doublet state and a weak antiferromagnetic interaction between Jeff = 1/2 moments in the Yb variant. On the other hand, the effective moment μeff = 8.8 μB was obtained from the Curie-Weiss fit of the low-temperature susceptibility data of Er variant suggests the admixture of higher crystal electric field states with the ground state. The Curie-Weiss fit of low-temperature susceptibility data for Er system unveils the presence of a relatively strong antiferromagnetic interaction between Er3+ moments compared to its Yb3+ analog. Ba3ErB9O18 does not show long-range magnetic ordering down to 500 mK. Furthermore, our crystal electric field calculations based on magnetization data of Ba3ErB9O18 suggest the presence of a small gap between the ground and first excited Kramers doublets. The broad maximum around 4 K in magnetic specific heat in zero-field is attributed to the thermal population of the first CEF excited state in Ba3ErB9O18, which is consistent with our CEF calculations.

Disordered magnetic states known as spin liquids are of paramount importance in both fundamental and applied science. A classical state of this kind was predicted for the Ising antiferromagnetic triangular model more than half a century ago, while additional non-commuting exchange terms were proposed to induce its quantum version -- a quantum spin liquid. These predictions have not been yet confirmed experimentally. Here we report a discovery of such a state in the structurally perfect triangular-lattice antiferromagnet NdTa$_7$O$_{19}$. Its magnetic ground state is characterized by spin-1/2 degrees of freedom with Ising-like interactions and gives rise to low-frequency spin excitations persisting down to the lowest temperatures. Our study demonstrates the key role of strong spin-orbit coupling in stabilizing spin liquids that result from magnetic anisotropy and highlights the large family of rare-earth (RE) heptatantalates RETa$_7$O$_{19}$ as a novel framework for realization of these states, which represent a promising platform for quantum applications.

In this paper we report direct experimental observation of ferroelectricity in the VC phase of $β$-TeVO$_4$, a frustrated spin chain system with pronounced magnetic anisotropy and a rich phase diagram. Saturation polarization is proportional to neutron scattering intensities that correspond to the VC magnetic reflection. This implies that inverse Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya mechanism is responsible for driving electric polarization. Linear magnetoelectric coupling is absent, however an unprecedented dependence of electric coercive field on applied magnetic field reveals a novel way of manipulating multiferroic information.

This makes its detection extremely difficult and controversial. Recently, nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) has been proposed as one of the most suitable techniques to confirm its existence. We report a $^{17}$O NMR observation of the reduction of the local magnetization in the polarized state of the frustrated spin-1/2 chain $β$-TeVO$_4$, which was previously proposed to be a fingerprint of the spin-nematic behavior. However, our detailed study shows that the detected missing fraction of the magnetization, probed by NMR frequency shift, is thermally activated, thus undermining the presence of the spin-nematic phase in the investigated compound. This highlights the importance of careful considerations of temperature-dependent NMR shift that has been overlooked in previous studies of spin nematicity.

$β$-TeVO$_4$ is a frustrated spin 1/2 zig-zag chain system, where spin-density-wave (SDW), vector chiral (VC)and an exotic dynamic spin-stripe phase compete at low temperatures. Here we use torque magnetometry to study the anisotropy of these phases in magnetic fields of up to 5 T. Our results show that the magnetic-field-induced spin reorientation occurs in the SDW and in the spin stripe phases for $μ_0 H \geq 2$~T. The observed spin reorientation is a new element of the anisotropic phase diagram for the field directions in the $ac$ and $a^*b$ crystallographic planes. The presented results should help establishing the model of anisotropic magnetic interactions, which are responsible for the formation of complex magnetic phases in $β$-TeVO$_4$ and similar quantum systems.

The ground state of the simple Heisenberg nearest-neighbor quantum kagome antiferromagnetic model is a magnetically disordered spin liquid, yet various perturbations may lead to fundamentally different states. Here we disclose the origin of magnetic ordering in the structurally-perfect kagome material YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$, which is free of the widespread impurity problem. {\it Ab-initio} calculations and modeling of its magnetic susceptibility reveal that, similar to the archetypal case of herbertsmithite, the nearest-neighbor exchange is by far the dominant isotropic interaction. Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya (DM) magnetic anisotropy deduced from electron spin resonance and specific-heat measurements is, however, significantly larger than in herbertsmithite. By enhancing spin correlations within kagome planes, this anisotropy is essential for magnetic ordering. Our study isolates the effect of DM anisotropy from other perturbations and unambiguously confirms the theoretical phase diagram.

Frustrated spin-1/2 chains, despite the apparent simplicity, exhibit remarkably rich phase diagram comprising vector-chiral (VC), spin-density-wave (SDW) and multipolar/spin-nematic phases as a function of the magnetic field. Here we report a study of $β$-TeVO$_4$, an archetype of such compounds, based on magnetization and neutron diffraction measurements up to 25 T. We find the transition from the helical VC ground state to the SDW state at $\sim$3 T for the magnetic field along the $a$ and $c$ crystal axes, and at $\sim$9 T for the field along the $b$ axis. The high-field (HF) state, existing above $\sim$18 T, i.e., above $\sim$1/2 of the saturated magnetization, is an incommensurate magnetically ordered state and not the spin-nematic state, as theoretically predicted for the isotropic frustrated spin-1/2 chain. The HF state is likely driven by sizable interchain interactions and symmetric intrachain anisotropies uncovered in previous studies. Consequently, the potential existence of the spin nematic phase in $β$-TeVO$_4$ is limited to a narrow field range, i.e., a few tenths of a tesla bellow the saturation of the magnetization, as also found in other frustrated spin-1/2 chain compounds.

The magnetic ground state of the ideal quantum kagome antiferromagnet (QKA) has been a long-standing puzzle, mainly because perturbations to the nearest-neighbor isotropic Heisenberg Hamiltonian can lead to various fundamentally different ground states. Here we investigate a recently synthesized QKA representative YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$, where perturbations commonly present in real materials, like lattice distortion and intersite ion mixing, are absent. Nevertheless, this compound enters a long-range magnetically ordered state below $T_N=15$ K. Our powder neutron diffraction experiment reveals that its magnetic structure corresponds to a coplanar $120^\circ$ state with negative vector spin chirality. The ordered magnetic moments are suppressed to $0.42(2)μ_B$, which is consistent with the previously detected spin dynamics persisting to the lowest experimentally accessible temperatures. This indicates either a coexistence of magnetic order and disorder or the presence of strong quantum fluctuations in the ground state of YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$. The origin of the magnetic order is sought in terms of Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya magnetic anisotropy and further-neighbor isotropic exchange interactions.

Elementary excitations in condensed matter capture the complex many-body dynamics of interacting basic entities in a simple quasiparticle picture. In magnetic systems the most established quasiparticles are magnons, collective excitations that reside in ordered spin structures, and spinons, their fractional counterparts that emerge in disordered, yet correlated spin states. Here we report on the discovery of elementary excitation inherent to spin-stripe order that represents a bound state of two phason quasiparticles, resulting in a wiggling-like motion of the magnetic moments. We observe these excitations, which we dub "wigglons", in the frustrated zigzag spin-1/2 chain compound $β$-TeVO$_4$, where they give rise to unusual low-frequency spin dynamics in the spin-stripe phase. The Kondo effect, an eminent manifestation of many-body physics in condensed matter, is traditionally explained as exchange scattering of conduction electrons on a spinful impurity in a metal. The resulting screening of the impurity's local moment by the electron Fermi sea is characterized by a Kondo temperature $T_K$, below which the system enters a non-perturbative strongly-coupled regime. In recent years, this effect has found its realizations beyond the bulk-metal paradigm in many other itinerant-electron systems, such as quantum dots in semiconductor heterostructures and in nanomaterials, quantum point contacts, and graphene. Here we report on the first experimental observation of the Kondo screening by chargeless quasiparticles. This occurs in a charge-insulating quantum spin liquid, where spinon excitations forming a Fermi surface take the role of conduction electrons. The observed impurity behaviour therefore bears a strong resemblance to the conventional case in a metal. The discovered spinon-based Kondo effect provides a prominent platform for characterising and possibly manipulating enigmatic host spin liquids.

One of the key questions concerning frustrated lattices that has lately emerged is the role of disorder in inducing spin-liquid-like properties. In this context, the quantum kagome antiferromagnets YCu$_3$(OH)$_6$Cl$_3$, which has been recently reported as the first geometrically perfect realization of the kagome lattice with negligible magnetic/non-magnetic intersite mixing and a possible quantum-spin-liquid ground state, is of particular interest. However, contrary to previous conjectures, here we show clear evidence of bulk magnetic ordering in this compound below $T_N=15$\,K by combining bulk magnetization and heat capacity measurements, and local-probe muon spin relaxation measurements. The magnetic ordering in this material is rather unconventional in several respects. Firstly, a crossover regime where the ordered state coexists with the paramagnetic state extends down to $T_N/3$ and, secondly, the fluctuation crossover is shifted far below $T_N$. Moreover, a reduced magnetic-entropy release at $T_N$ and persistent spin dynamics that is observed at temperatures as low as $T/T_N=1/300$ could be a sign of emergent excitations of correlated spin-loops or, alternatively, a sign of fragmentation of each magnetic moment into an ordered and a fluctuating part.

In the magnetically ordered ground state, the excitation spectrum exhibits coexisting magnon dispersion, characteristic of long-range magnetic order, and a spinon-like continuum that prevails above 2 meV, indicating the dominance of intrachain interactions. Combining linear-spin-wave-theory and pre-calculated spinon-continuum results, we reproduce the experimental spectrum. Our analysis offers a minimal exchange-network model which determines dominant intrachain interactions, their anisotropies and weak interchain interactions. The obtained parameters explain the magnetic ordering vector and spin excitations in the magnetic ground state.

We present a study of the static magnetic properties and spin dynamics in Cobalt valence tautomers (VT), molecules where a low-spin (LS) to high-spin (HS) crossover driven by an intramolecular electron transfer can be controlled by the temperature, by the external pressure or by light irradiation. In the investigated complex, a LS-Co(III) ion bound to a dinegative organic ligand can be reversibly converted into the HS-Co(II) bound to a mononegative one. By combining magnetization measurements with Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (NMR) and Muon Spin Relaxation (μSR), we have investigated the static magnetic properties and the spin dynamics as a function of the temperature. Moreover, the effect of the external pressure as well as of the infrared light irradiation have been explored through magnetometry and NMR measurements to determine the spin dynamics of the HS state. The photoinduced HS state, which can have a lifetime of several hours below 30 K, is characterized by spin dynamics in the MHz range, which persist at least down to 10 K. The application of an external pressure causes a progressive increase of the LS-HS crossover, which reaches room temperature for pressures around 10 kbar.

Employing nuclear magnetic resonance in a broad magnetic-field range down to millikelvin temperatures, we show that in applied magnetic fields this enigmatic state is intrinsically unstable against a SL with a full or a partial gap. A similar instability of the gapless Fermi-surface SL was previously encountered in an organic triangular-lattice antiferromagnet, suggesting a common destabilization mechanism that most likely arises from spinon pairing. A salient property of this instability is that an infinitesimal field suffices to induce it, as predicted theoretically for some other types of gapless SL's.

Quantum spin liquid is a disordered magnetic state with fractional spin excitations. Its clearest example is found in an exactly solved Kitaev honeycomb model where a spin flip fractionalizes into two types of anyons, quasiparticles that are neither fermions nor bosons: a pair of gauge fluxes and a Majorana fermion. Here we demonstrate this kind of fractionalization in the Kitaev paramagnetic state of the honeycomb magnet $α$-RuCl$_3$. The spin-excitation gap measured by nuclear magnetic resonance consists of the predicted Majorana fermion contribution following the cube of the applied magnetic field, and a finite zero-field contribution matching the predicted size of the gauge-flux gap. The observed fractionalization into gapped anyons survives in a broad range of temperatures and magnetic fields despite inevitable non-Kitaev interactions between the spins, which are predicted to drive the system towards a gapless ground state. The gapped character of both anyons is crucial for their potential application in topological quantum computing.

We investigate the spin-stripe mechanism responsible for the peculiar nanometer modulation of the incommensurate magnetic order that emerges between the vector-chiral and the spin-density-wave phase in the frustrated zigzag spin-1/2 chain compound $β$-TeVO$_4$. A combination of magnetic-torque, neutron-diffraction and spherical-neutron-polarimetry measurements is employed to determine the complex magnetic structures of all three ordered phases. Based on these results, we develop a simple phenomenological model, which exposes the exchange anisotropy as the key ingredient for the spin-stripe formation in frustrated spin systems.

Impurities, which are inherently present in any real material, may play an important role in the magnetism of frustrated spin systems with spin-liquid ground states. We address the impurity issue in quantum kagome antiferromagnets by investigating ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$SO$_4$ (Zn-brochantite) by means of muon spin spectroscopy. We show that muons couple to the impurity magnetism, originating from Cu-Zn intersite disorder, and that the impurities are highly correlated with the kagome spins, allowing us to probe the intrinsic kagome physics via a Kondo-like effect. The low-temperature plateau in local susceptibility identifies the spin-liquid ground state as being gapless. The corresponding spin fluctuations exhibit an unconventional spectral density and an intriguing field dependence.

The emergent behavior of spin liquids that are born out of geometrical frustration makes them an intriguing state of matter. We show that in the quantum kagome antiferromagnet ZnCu$_3$(OH)$_6$SO$_4$ several different correlated, yet fluctuating states exist. By combining complementary local-probe techniques with neutron scattering, we discover a crossover from a critical regime into a gapless spin-liquid phase with decreasing temperature. An additional unconventional instability of the latter phase leads to a second, distinct spin-liquid state that is stabilized at the lowest temperatures. We advance such complex behavior as a feature common to different frustrated quantum magnets.

Motifs of periodic modulations are encountered in a variety of natural systems, where at least two rival states are present. In strongly correlated electron systems such behaviour has typically been associated with competition between short- and long-range interactions, e.g., between exchange and dipole-dipole interactions in the case of ferromagnetic thin films. Here we show that spin-stripe textures may develop also in antiferromagnets, where long-range dipole-dipole magnetic interactions are absent. A comprehensive analysis of magnetic susceptibility, high-field magnetization, specific heat, and neutron diffraction measurements unveils $β$-TeVO$_4$ as a nearly perfect realization of a frustrated (zigzag) ferromagnetic spin-1/2 chain. Strikingly, a narrow spin stripe phase develops at elevated magnetic fields due to weak frustrated short-range interchain exchange interactions possibly assisted by the symmetry allowed electric polarization. This concept provides an alternative route for the stripe formation in strongly correlated electron systems and may help understanding other widespread, yet still elusive, stripe-related phenomena.

Diluted magnetic semiconductors possessing intrinsic static magnetism at high temperatures represent a promising class of multifunctional materials with high application potential in spintronics and magneto-optics. In the hexagonal Fe-doped diluted magnetic oxide, 6H-BaTiO$_{3-δ}$, room-temperature ferromagnetism has been previously reported. Ferromagnetism is broadly accepted as an intrinsic property of this material, despite its unusual dependence on do** concentration and processing conditions. However, the here reported combination of bulk magnetization and complementary in-depth local-probe electron spin resonance and muon spin relaxation measurements, challenges this conjecture. While a ferromagnetic transition occurs around 700 K, it does so only in additionally annealed samples and is accompanied by an extremely small average value of the ordered magnetic moment. Furthermore, several additional magnetic instabilities are detected at lower temperatures. These coincide with electronic instabilities of the Fe-doped 3C-BaTiO$_{3-δ}$ pseudocubic polymorph. Moreover, the distribution of iron dopants with frozen magnetic moments is found to be non-uniform. Our results demonstrate that the intricate static magnetism of the hexagonal phase is not intrinsic, but rather stems from sparse strain-induced pseudocubic regions. We point out the vital role of internal strain in establishing defect ferromagnetism in systems with competing structural phases.

The layered FeTe2O5Cl compound was studied by specific-heat, muon spin relaxation, nuclear magnetic resonance, dielectric, as well as neutron and synchrotron x-ray diffraction measurements, and the results were compared to isostructural FeTe2O5Br. We find that the low-temperature ordered state, similarly as in FeTe2O5Br, is multiferroic - the elliptical amplitude-modulated magnetic cycloid and the electric polarization simultaneously develop below 11 K. However, compared to FeTe2O5Br, the magnetic elliptical envelop rotates by 75(4) deg and the orientation of the electric polarization is much more sensitive to the applied electric field. We propose that the observed differences between the two isostructural compounds arise from geometric frustration, which enhances the effects of otherwise subtle Fe3+ (S = 5/2) magnetic anisotropies. Finally, x-ray diffraction results imply that, on the microscopic scale, the magnetoelectric coupling is driven by shifts of the O1 atoms, as a response to the polarization of the Te4+ lone-pair electrons involved in the Fe-O-Te-O-Fe exchange bridges.

Neutron diffraction and nuclear quadrupole resonance (NQR) measurements were employed to investigate magnetic order in the non-ferroelectric phase preceding the low-temperature multiferroic state in FeTe2O5Br. Refnement of the neutron diffraction data and simulations of 79,81Br NQR spectra reveal that the incommensurate magnetic ordering in the non-ferroelectric state comprises amplitude-modulated magnetic moments, similarly as in the multiferroic state. The two ordered states differ in the orientation of the magnetic moments and phase shifts between modulation waves. Surprisingly, all symmetry restrictions for the electric polarization are absent in both states. The different ferroelectric responses of the two states are thus argued to arise from the differences in the phase shifts between certain modulation waves, which cancel out in the non-ferrolectric state.

Finite interchain interactions promote long-range antiferromagnetic order below $T_N=17$ K. The derived spin canted structure is characterized by the magnetic propagation vector $\mathbf{k}=(1, 0, 0)$ and the reduced magnetic moment $\bm{m}=[0.13(7), 0.50(1), 0.00(8)]μ_B$. The values of the magnetic anisotropies determined from the field and angular dependencies of the antiferromagnetic resonance comply well with a previous electron paramagnetic resonance study and correctly account for the observed magnetic ground state and spin-flop transition.

An incommensurate elliptical helical magnetic structure in the frustrated coupled-spin-chain system FeTe2O5Br is surprisingly found to persist down to 53(3) mK (T/T_N ~ 1/200), according to neutron scattering and muon spin relaxation. In this state, finite spin fluctuations at T -> 0 are evidenced by muon depolarization, which is in agreement with specific-heat data indicating the presence of both gapless and gapped excitations. We thus show that the amplitude-modulated magnetic order intrinsically accommodates contradictory persistent spin dynamics and long-range order and can serve as a model structure to investigate their coexistence.

Anisotropic magnetic properties of a layered kagome-like system Cu3Bi(SeO3)2O2Br have been studied by bulk magnetization and magnetic susceptibility measurements as well as powder and single-crystal neutron diffraction. At T_N = 27.4 K the system develops an alternating antiferromagnetic order of (ab) layers, which individually exhibit canted ferrimagnetic moment arrangement, resulting from the competing ferro- and antiferro-magnetic intralayer exchange interactions. A magnetic field B_C ~ 0.8 T applied along the c axis (perpendicular to the layers) triggers a metamagnetic transition, when every second layer flips, i.e., resulting in a ferrimagnetic structure. Significantly higher fields are required to rotate the ferromagnetic component towards the b axis (~7 T) or towards the a axis (~15 T). The estimates of the exchange coupling constants and features indicative of an XY character of this quasi-2D system are presented.

The low-temperature magnetic phase diagram of the multiferroic system FeTe$_2$O$_5$Br down to 300 mK and up to 9 T is presented. Short-range magnetic correlations within the crystal layers start to develop already at $\sim$50 K, i.e., far above $T_{N1} \sim$ 11.0 K, where the system undergoes a magnetic phase transition into the high-temperature incommensurate (HT-ICM) phase. Only 0.5 K lower, at $T_{N2}$, the system undergoes a second phase transition into the low-temperature incommensurate amplitude-modulated (LT-ICM) phase accompanied by a spontaneous electric polarization. When the magnetic field is applied, the transition temperatures shift depending on the field orientation. In the case of $B||b$ and $B >$ 4.5 T, the HT-ICM phase disappears along with the electric polarization in the LT-ICM phase. The field dependence of the magnetic transition temperatures is explained in the context of the magnetic susceptibility behavior. Similarities and differences between the novel amplitude-modulated and well-established helicoidal magnetoelectrics are discussed.

Magnetic and ferroelectric properties of layered geometrically frustrated cluster compound FeTe$_2$O$_5$Br were investigated with single-crystal neutron diffraction and dielectric measurements. Incommensurate amplitude modulated magnetic order with the wave vector $\bf{q}$=($\half$, 0.463, 0) develops below $T_N=10.6(2) {\rm K}$. Simultaneously, a ferroelectric order with the spontaneous polarization perpendicular to ${\bf q}$ and to Fe$^{3+}$ magnetic moments emerges. The observed ferroelectricity and extraordinary linear scaling of the ferroelectric and magnetic order parameter are provoked by the striction of the intercluster Fe-O-Te-O-Fe bridges leading to the shift of Te$^{4+}$ ions and polarization of their lone-pair electrons.
