Weakly commensurable groups, with applications to differential geometry
Abstract: The article contains a survey of our results on weakly commensurable arithmetic and general Zariski-dense subgroups, length-commensurable and isospectral locally symmetric spaces and of related problems in the theory of semi-simple agebraic groups. We have included a discussion of very recent results and conjectures on absolutely almost simple algebraic groups having the same maximal tori and fini… ▽ More

On the fields generated by the lengths of closed geodesics in locally symmetric spaces
Abstract: This paper is the next installment of our analysis of length-commensurable locally symmetric spaces begun in Publ. math. IHES 109(2009), 113-184. For a Riemannian manifold $M$, we let $L(M)$ be the weak length spectrum of $M$, i.e. the set of lengths of all closed geodesics in $M$, and let $\mathcal{F}(M)$ denote the subfield of $\mathbb{R}$ generated by $L(M)$. Let now $M_i$ be an arithmetically… ▽ More

Weakly-split spherical Tits systems in quasi-reductive groups
Abstract: The main result of this paper (Theorem B) asserts that under natural conditions, any weakly-split Tits system in G(k), G a reductive or quasi-reductive group over an arbitrary field k, is the standard one.

A Note on Non-equilibrium Work Fluctuations and Equilibrium Free Energies
Abstract: We consider in this paper, a few important issues in non-equilibrium work fluctuations and their relations to equilibrium free energies. First we show that Jarzynski identity can be viewed as a cumulant expansion of work. For a switching process which is nearly quasistatic the work distribution is sharply peaked and Gaussian. We show analytically that dissipation given by average work minus revers… ▽ More

Addendum to `Fake Projective Planes'
Abstract: The addendum updates the results presented in the paper `Fake Projective Plane, Invent Math 168, 321-370 (2007)' and makes some additions and corrections. The fake projective planes are classified into twenty six classes. Together with a recent work of Donald Cartwright and Tim Steger, there is now a complete list of fake projective planes. There are precisely one hundred fake projective planes… ▽ More

Number theoretic techniques in the theory of Lie groups and differential geometry
Abstract: The purpose of this article is to present a survey of our recent results on length commensurable and isospectral locally symmetric spaces. The geometric questions led us to the notion of "weak commensurability" of two Zariski-dense subgroups in a semi-simple Lie group. We have shown that for arithmetic subgroups, weak commensurability has surprisingly strong consequences. Our proofs make use of… ▽ More

Local-global principles for embedding of fields with involution into simple algebras with involution
Abstract: In this paper we prove local-global principles for embedding of fields with involution into central simple algebras with involution over a global field. These should be of interest in study of classical groups over global fields. We deduce from our results that in a group of type D_n, n>4 even, two weakly commensurable Zariski-dense S-arithmetic subgroups are actually commensurable. A consequenc… ▽ More

Experimental study of nonlinear dust acoustic solitary waves in a dusty plasma
Abstract: The excitation and propagation of finite amplitude low frequency solitary waves are investigated in an Argon plasma impregnated with kaolin dust particles. A nonlinear longitudinal dust acoustic solitary wave is excited by pulse modulating the discharge voltage with a negative potential. It is found that the velocity of the solitary wave increases and the width decreases with the increase of the… ▽ More

Driven transverse shear waves in a strongly coupled dusty plasma
Abstract: The linear dispersion properties of transverse shear waves in a strongly coupled dusty plasma are experimentally studied by exciting them in a controlled manner with a variable frequency external source. The dusty plasma is maintained in the strongly coupled fluid regime with (1 < Gamma << Gamma_c) where Gamma is the Coulomb coupling parameter and Gamma_c is the crystallization limit. Weakly commensurable arithmetic groups, lengths of closed geodesics and isospectral locally symmetric spaces
Abstract: We introduce the notion of weak commensurabilty of arithmetic subgroups and relate it to the length equivalence and isospectrality of locally symmetric spaces. We prove many strong consequences of weak commensurabilty and derive from these many interesting results about isolength and isospectral locally symmetric spaces.

Electronic properties of ordered and disordered linear clusters of atoms and molecules
Abstract: The electronic properties of one-dimensional clusters of N atoms or molecules have been studied. The model used is similar to the Kronig-Penney model with the potential offered by each ion being approximated by an attractive delta function. The energy eigenvalues, the eigenstates and the density of states are calculated exactly for a linear cluster of N atoms or molecules. The dependence of thes… ▽ More

Arithmetic fake projective spaces and arithmetic fake grassmannians
Abstract: We show that if n>5, PU(n-1,1) does not contain a cocompact arithmetic subgroup with the same Euler-Poincare characteristic (in the sense of C.T.C. Wall) as the complex projective space of dimension n-1, and show that if n=5, there are at least four such subgroups, which are in fact torsion-free. This, in particular, leads to examples of a fake projective space of dimension 4. Analogous results… ▽ More

Fake projective planes
Abstract: A fake projective plane is a smooth complex surface which is not the complex projective plane but has the same Betti numbers as the complex projective plane. The first example of such a surface was constructed by David Mumford in 1979 using p-adic uniformization. Two more examples were found by Ishida and Kato by related method. Keum has recently given an example which is possibly different from t… ▽ More

On quasi-reductive group schemes
Abstract: The paper was motivated by a question of Vilonen, and the main results have been used by Mirkovic and Vilonen to give a geometric interpretation of the dual group (as a Chevalley group over Z) of a reductive group. We define a quasi-reducitve group over a discrete valuation ring R to be an affine flat group scheme over R such that (i) the fibers are of finite type and of the same dimension; (ii)… ▽ More
