We present results of NTT spectroscopy of the one known planetary nebula (PN) in the dwarf spheroidal galaxy Fornax, a gas-deficient Local Group galaxy that stopped its star formation activity a few hundred million years ago. We detected the [OIII] 4363 line with a signal-to-noise ratio of ~22. For the first time we detected the weak [SII] 6717,6731 lines (I(6717+6731) ~0.01 I(Hbeta)), determined the electron number density (Ne(SII) = 750 cm^-3), and calculated O, N, Ne, Ar, S, Cl, Fe, He and C abundances. The abundance analysis presented here is based on the direct calculation of the electron temperature Te and yields an oxygen abundance of 12+log(O/H) = 8.28+/-0.02. The analysis of the O, Ne, Ar and S abundances shows that the original ISM oxygen abundance was 0.27+/-0.10 dex lower and that third-dredge-up self-pollution in oxygen took place. The blue spectrum shows weak Wolf-Rayet features, and the progenitor star is classified as a weak emission-line star. Four of the five PNe in dwarf spheroidal galaxies are now known to show WR wind features. Overall, the metallicity of the progenitor of the PN fits in well with stellar spectroscopic abundances derived in previous studies as well as with the stellar age-metallicity relation of Fornax.

HS 2134+0400 - new very metal-poor galaxy, a representative of void population?

We present the SAO 6m telescope spectroscopy of a blue compact galaxy (BCG) HS 2134+0400 discovered in frame of the dedicated Hamburg/SAO survey for Low Metallicity BCGs (HSS-LM). Its very low abundance of oxygen (12+log(O/H) = 7.44), as well as other heavy elements (S, N, Ne, Ar), assigns this dwarf galaxy to the group of BCGs with the lowest metal content. There are only eight that low metallicity among several thousand known BCGs in the nearby Universe. The abundance ratios for the heavy elements (S/O, Ne/O, N/O, and Ar/O) are well consistent with the typical values of other very metal-poor BCGs. The global environment of HS 2134+0400 is atypical of the majority of BCGs. The object falls within the Pegasus void, the large volume with the very low density of galaxies with the normal (M_B* = -19.6) or high luminosity. Since we found in voids a dozen more the very metal-poor galaxies, we discuss the hypothesis that such objects can be representative of a substantial fraction of the void dwarf galaxy population.

Study of DDO 68: nearest candidate for a young galaxy?

We present the results of optical spectroscopy and imaging with the SAO 6m telescope for the dwarf galaxy DDO 68 (UGC 5340 = VV 542), falling into the region of very low density of luminous (L > L*) galaxies (Lynx-Cancer void). Its deep images in V,R bands and in the narrow H-alpha-filter show that the galaxy has the very irregular morphology, with a long curved tail on the South and a ring-like structure at the Northern edge. The latter consists of 5 separate regions, in three of which we could measure O/H by the classical T_e method. Their weighted mean oxygen abundance corresponds to 12+log(O/H)=7.21+-0.03, coincident within uncertainties with those for IZw18. The (V-R) colour of DDO 68 is rather blue all over the galaxy, indicating the youth of its stellar populations. Comparing the (V-R)_0 colour of the underlying exponential disk of 0.12+-0.04 with the PEGASE.2 models for the evolving stellar clusters, we give the first estimate of the ages of the oldest stellar population, which needs confirmation by the other colours and the photometry of resolved stars. These ages are in the range of 200-900 Myr for continuous star formation law, and 100-115 Myr for the instantaneous starburst. We discuss the properties and the possible youth of this nearby object (2.3 times closer than the famous young galaxy IZw18) in the context of its atypical environment.

We present the sixth list with results of the Hamburg/SAO Survey for Emission-Line Galaxies. The final list resulted from follow-up spectroscopy conducted with the 4.5m MMT telescope in 1996, and with 2.2m CAHA and 6m SAO telescopes in 2000 to 2003. The data of this snap-shot spectroscopy survey confirmed 134 emission-line objects out of 182 observed candidates and allowed their quantitative spectral classification and redshift determination. We classify 73 emission-line objects as definite or probable blue compact or HII galaxies (BCG), 8 as QSOs, 4 as Seyfert 1 and 2 galaxies. 30 low-excitation objects were classified as definite or probable starburst nuclei (SBN), 3 as dwarf amorphous nuclei starburst galaxies (DANS) and 2 as LINERs. Due to the low signal-to-noise ratio we could not classify 14 ELGs (NON). For another 9 galaxies we did not detect any significant emission lines. For 98 emission-line galaxies, the redshifts and/or line intensities are determined for the first time. For the remaining 28 previously-known ELGs we give either improved data the line intensities or some independent measurements. The detection rate of ELGs is ~70%. This paper completes the classification of strong-lined ELGs found in the zone of the Hamburg/SAO survey. Together with previously known BCG/HII galaxies in this zone, this sample of ~500 objects is the largest to date in a well bound region.

We present the results of high quality long-slit spectroscopy of planetary nebulae (PNe) and HII regions in the two dwarf irregular galaxies Sextans A and B, which belong to a small group of galaxies just outside the Local Group. In Sextans A we obtained the element abundances in its only known PN and in three HII regions with the classical Te method. The oxygen abundances in these three HII regions of Sextans A are all consistent within the individual rms uncertainties, with the average 12+log(O/H) = 7.54+/-0.06. The oxygen abundance of the PN in Sextans A is, however, significantly higher: 12+$\log$(O/H) = 8.02+/-0.05. This PN is even more enriched in nitrogen and helium, suggesting a classification as a PN of Type I. In Sextans B we obtained spectra of one PN and six HII regions. Element abundances with the Te method could be derived for the PN and three of the HII regions. For two of these HII regions, which have a separation of only ~70 pc in projection, the oxygen abundances do not differ within the rms uncertainties, with a mean of 12+log(O/H) = 7.53+/-0.05. The third HII region, which is about 0.6 kpc northeast from the former two, is twice as metal-rich, with 12+log(O/H) = 7.84+/-0.05. This suggests considerable inhomogeneity in the present-day metallicity distribution in Sextans B. (Abridged)

Planetary nebulae (PNe) and HII regions provide a probe of the chemical enrichment and star formation history of a galaxy from intermediate ages to the present day. We present the first results of NTT spectroscopy of HII regions and/or PNe in four nearby dwarf galaxies: Sextans A, Sextans B, NGC 3109, and Fornax. For all PNe and some of the HII regions in these galaxies we have obtained elemental abundances via the classic Te-method based on the detection of the [OIII] 4363 line. The oxygen abundances in three HII regions of Sextans A are all consistent within the individual rms uncertainties. The oxygen abundance in the PN of Sextans A is however significantly higher. This PN is even more enriched in nitrogen and helium, implying its classification as a PN of Type I. The presumably unaffected PN abundances of S and Ar are well below those in the HII regions, indicating a lower metallicity at the epoch of the PN progenitor formation. For two HII regions in Sextans B, the oxygen abundances do not differ within the rms uncertainties. The third one is, however, twice as metal-rich, providing evidence for the inhomogeneity of the current metallicity distribution in Sextans B. For the PN in Sextans B we measured an O/H that is consistent with that of the low-metallicity HII regions. For NGC 3109 our preliminary results indicate that the oxygen abundances of PNe and HII regions are all within a small range of $\pm$0.15 dex. For the PN in Fornax, Ne, Ar and S abundances suggest that the ISM metallicity was $\sim$0.3 dex lower at the epoch of the PN progenitor's formation, compared to the O/H value derived for the PN (abridged).

We present the results of deep multicolour CCD imaging with the 6-m telescope of the pair of extremely metal-deficient gas-rich dwarf galaxies SBS 0335-052 E and W. The total magnitudes in U,B,V,R,I bands and the integrated fluxes of H-alpha emission are measured for both galaxies, and their integrated colours are derived. The analysis of their surface brightness (SB) distributions is performed with the use of the azimuthally-averaged SB profiles. The latter were modeled by the central Gaussian component and the underlying exponential `disk', mainly contributing in the outermost, very low SB regions. The colours of these LSB components are used to estimate the age of the oldest visible stellar population. For the interpretation of the observed LSB colours their contamination by the nebular emission of ionized gas is accounted for by the use of the distribution of H-alpha flux. We compare the derived `gas-free' colours with the colours predicted by the evolution synthesis models from the PEGASE.2 package, considering three SF histories: a) instantaneous starburst, b) continuous star formation with constant SFR, c) continuous exponentially fading SF (e-fold time of 3 Gyr). We conclude that the `gas-free' colours of the LSB component of the E galaxy can be best consistent with the instantaneous starburst population (ages of less than ~100 Myr). Models with continuous SF give less consistent results, but can be considered as acceptable. For such scenarios, the `gas-free' colours require ages of less than ~400 Myr. For the W galaxy, the situation is in general similar. But the colour (V-R) appears to be quite red and implies a significantly older component. We briefly discuss the possible evolution sequence between SBS 0335-052, HI 1225+01 and other extremely metal-deficient galaxies based on the merger scenario.

We present the first edition of the {S}DSS {H}II-galaxies with {O}xygen abundances {C}atalog (SHOC), which is a listing of strong emission-line galaxies (ELGs) from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS). Oxygen abundances have been obtained with the classic Te-method. We describe the method exploiting the SDSS database to construct this sample. The selection procedures are described and discussed in detail, as well as some problems encountered in the process of deriving reliable emission line parameters. The method was applied to the SDSS Data Release 1 (DR1). We present 612 SDSS emission-line galaxies (624 separate SDSS targets in total), for which the oxygen abundances 12+log(O/H) have r.m.s. uncertainties <0.20 dex. The subsample of 263 ELGs have an uncertainty <0.10 dex, while 459 ELGs have an uncertainty <0.15 dex. The catalog includes the main parameters of all selected ELGs, the intensities and equivalent widths of hydrogen and oxygen emission lines, as well as oxygen abundances with their uncertainties. The information on the presence of Wolf-Rayet blue and/or red bumps in 109 galaxies is also included. With the use of combined g,r,i SDSS images we performed visual morphological classification of all SHOC galaxies. 461 galaxies (~75%) are classified as confident or probable blue compact galaxies (BCG/BCG?), 78 as irregular ones, 20 as low surface brightness galaxies (LSBG), 10 as obviously interacting and 43 as spiral galaxies. In creating the catalog, 30 narrow line AGN and 69 LINERs were also identified; these are also presented apart of the main catalog. We outline briefly the content of the catalog, and the prospects of its use for statistical studies of the star formation and chemical evolution issues. Some of these studies will be presented in the forthcoming paper (abridged).

In this paper we present results of a pilot study to use imaging data from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey (SDSS) to search for low-surface-brightness (LSB) galaxies. For our pilot study we use a test sample of 92 galaxies from the catalog of Impey et al. (1996) distributed over 93 SDSS fields of the Early Data Release (EDR). Many galaxies from the test sample are either LSB or dwarf galaxies. To deal with the SDSS data most effectively a new photometry software was created, which is described in this paper. We present the results of the selection algorithms applied to these 93 EDR fields. Two galaxies from the Impey et al. test sample are very likely artifacts, as confirmed by follow-up imaging. With our algorithms, we were able to recover 87 of the 90 remaining test sample galaxies, implying a detection rate of $\sim$96.5%. The three missed galaxies fall too close to very bright stars or galaxies. In addition, 42 new galaxies with parameters similar to the test sample objects were found in these EDR fields (i.e., $\sim$47% additional galaxies). We present the main photometric parameters of all identified galaxies and carry out first statistical comparisons. We tested the quality of our photometry by comparing the magnitudes for our test sample galaxies and other bright galaxies with values from the literature. All these tests yielded consistent results. We briefly discuss a few unusual galaxies found in our pilot study, including an LSB galaxy with a two-component disk and ten new giant LSB galaxies.

(Abridged). One of the most metal-deficient blue compact galaxies (BCGs) HS 0822+3542 (Z=1/34 Zsun), is also one of the nearest such objects. A trigger mechanism for its current SF burst has remained unclear. We report the discovery of a very blue ((B-V)tot=0.08 and (V-R)tot=0.14) LSB (mu_B^0 > 23.4 arcsec^-2) dwarf irregular (dIrr) galaxy, named SAO 0822+3545. Its small relative velocity and projected distance of ~11 kpc from the BCG imply their physical association. For this LSB galaxy, we present spectroscopic results, total B,V,R magnitudes, the effective radii and surface brightness (SB), and we describe its morphological properties. We compare the very blue colours of this dwarf with PEGASE.2 models of the colour evolution of a Z=1/20 Zsun stellar population, and combine this analysis with the data on the LSBD EW(Ha) values. The models best describing all available observational data depend on the relative fraction of massive stars in the IMF used. For a Salpeter IMF with Mup = 120 Msun, the best model includes a "young" single stellar population (SSP) with an age of ~10 Myr and an "old" SSP with the age of ~0.2--10 Gyr. The mass ratio of the old to young components should be in the range of 10 to 30. The role of interaction in triggering the galaxies major SF episodes during the last ~100-200 Myr is discussed. For the BCG, based on the spectroscopy with the 6m telescope, we estimate the physical parameters of its SF region and present the first evidence of an ionized gas supershell. This pair of dwarfs lies deep within the nearby Lynx-Cancer void, with the nearest bright (L > L*) galaxies at distances > 3 Mpc. This is probably one of the main factors responsible for the unevolved state of HS 0822+3542.

We present the description and the first results of a new project devoted to the search for extremely metal-deficient blue compact/HII-galaxies (BCGs) and to the creation of a well selected large BCG sample with strong emission lines. Such galaxies should be suitable for reliable determination of their oxygen abundance through the measurement of the faint [OIII]4363A line. The goals of the project are two-fold: a) to discover a significant number of new extremely metal-poor galaxies (Z <= 1/20 Zo), and b) to study the metallicity distribution of local BCGs. Selection of candidates for follow-up slit spectroscopy is performed on the database of objective prism spectra of the Hamburg Quasar Survey. The sky region is limited by delta >= 0 deg. and b^ii <= -30 deg. In this paper we present the results of the follow-up spectroscopy conducted with the Russian 6m telescope. The list of observed candidates contained 52 objects, of which 46 were confirmed as strong-lined BCGs (EW([OIII]5007) >= 100 A). The remaining five lower excitation ELGs include three BCGs, and two galaxies classified as SBN (Starburst Nucleus) and DANS (Dwarf Amorphous Nucleus Starburst). One object is identified as a quasar with a strong Ly_alpha emission line near 5000 A (z~3). We provide a list with coordinates, measured radial velocities, B-magnitudes, equivalent widths EW([OIII]5007) and EW(H_beta) and for the 46 strong-lined BCGs the derived oxygen abundances 12+log(O/H). The abundances range between 7.42 and 8.4 (corresponding to metallicities between 1/30 and 1/3 Zo). The sample contains four galaxies with Z < 1/20 Zo, of which three are new discoveries.
