A model of supergravity inflation we recently proposed can produce slow roll inflation and a realistic spectrum of particles even without F-term supersymmetry breaking. Supersymmetry is broken only by a D-term induced by a recently discovered new type of Fayet-Iliopoulos (FI) term. Almost all supersymmetric partners of the standard model fields can get masses as high as the inflationary Hubble scale. The exception is gauginos, for which the vanishing of F-terms implies an exact cancellation that keeps their masses exactly zero. To cure this problem without spoiling the simplicity of our model we introduce a new term that further enlarges the space of supergravity effective actions. It is an F-term that, similarly to the new FI term, becomes singular in the supersymmetric limit. We show that this term can produce large gaugino masses without altering the spectrum of other states and without lowering the cutoff of the effecive theory.

We describe and solve three puzzles arising in covariant and supertranslation-invariant formulas for the flux of angular momentum and other Lorentz charges in asymptotically flat spacetimes: 1) Supertranslation-invariance and covariance imply invariance under spacetime translations; 2) the flux depends on redundant auxiliary degrees of freedom that cannot be set to zero in all Lorentz frames without breaking Lorentz covariance; 3) supertranslation-invariant Lorentz charges do not generate the transformations of the Bondi mass aspect implied by the isometries of the asymptotic metric. In this letter, we solve the first two puzzles by presenting covariant formulas that unambiguously determine the auxiliary degrees of freedom and clarify the last puzzle by explaining the different role played by covariant and canonical charges. Our construction makes explicit the choice of reference frame underpinning seemingly unambiguous results presented in the current literature.

A recently proposed effective action for the trace anomaly describes a tensor-scalar theory that is weakly coupled up to a certain high energy scale, where it becomes strongly interacting. Its ultraviolet completion is obtained by coupling to gravity a quantum field theory in which conformal invariance is spontaneously broken. In this paper, we show that if the field theory that gives rise to the trace anomaly is a large $N_c$ conformal field theory, then the trace anomaly action has a completion above the strong scale in a holographic Randall-Sundrum two-brane theory, with the radion as a low energy remnant of the spontaneously broken conformal symmetry. Furthermore, we note that the sub-leading $N_c$ terms can be derived by adding localized fields to the UV brane, so that the theory remains weakly coupled. The sub-leading terms are also obtained by introducing the Weyl squared terms in the 5D bulk. These, however, exhibit strongly coupled behavior at the respective sub-Planckian energy scales.

We study solvable deformations of two-dimensional quantum field theories driven by a bilinear operator constructed from a pair of conserved $U(1)$ currents $J^a$. We propose a quantum formulation of these deformations, based on the gauging of the corresponding symmetries in a path integral. This formalism leads to an exact dressing of the $S$-matrix of the system, similarly as what happens in the case of a $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation. For conformal theories the deformations under study are expected to be exactly marginal. Still, a peculiar situation might arise when the conserved currents $J^a$ are not well-defined local operators in the original theory. A simple example of this kind of system is provided by rotation currents in a theory of multiple free, massless, non-compact bosons. We verify that, somewhat unexpectedly, such a theory is indeed still conformal after deformation and that it coincides with a TsT transformation of the original system. We then extend our formalism to the case in which the conserved currents are non-Abelian and point out its connection with Deformed T-dual Models and homogeneous Yang-Baxter deformations. In this case as well the deformation is based on a gauging of the symmetries involved and it turns out to be non-trivial only if the symmetry group admits a non-trivial central extension. Finally we apply what we learned by relating the $\mathrm{T}\overline{\mathrm{T}}$ deformation to the central extension of the two-dimensional Poincaré algebra.

The angular momentum radiated in gravitational scattering can be changed by performing a supertranslation of the asymptotic metric, i.e. by adding radiation with infinite wavelenght to the metric. This puzzling property can be avoided by adopting a supertranslation-invariant definition of the angular momentum flux in general relativity. Definitions currently available in the literature cannot reproduce the flux necessary to obtain the correct radiation reaction effects in gravitational scattering. They also disagree with computations of the flux performed using scattering amplitudes and soft graviton theorems. In this paper we provide a new supertranslation-invariant definition of the angular momentum flux in gravitational scattering that uses only asymptotic metric data and reproduces the flux necessary to obtain the correct radiation reaction effects.

A new supergravity D-term, not associated to gauged R-symmetry, was recently discovered and used to construct new supergravity models. In this paper we use a generalization of the new D-term that we used in previous works, to construct a supergravity model of slow-roll inflation with the observable sector of the minimal supersymmetric standard model. Supersymmetry is broken at a high scale in the hidden sector and communicated to the observable sector by gravity mediation. The new D-term contains free parameters that can give large masses to scalar superpartners of quarks and leptons and to the higgsinos while holding the masses of observed particles fixed. Gauginos receive a mass from a non-canonical kinetic term for the vector supermultiplets. We also present a simple argument proving in full generality that the cutoff $Λ$ of effective theories containing new D-terms can never exceed the supersymmetry breaking scale. In our theory, the relation between D-term and the Hubble constant during inflation also implies the universal relation $Λ\lesssim \sqrt{H M_{Pl}}$.

A measurement of the time between quantum jumps implies the capability to measure the next jump. During the time between jumps the quantum system is not evolving in a closed or unitary manner. While the wave function maintains phase coherence it evolves according to a non-Hermitian effective Hamiltonian. So under null measurement the timing of the next quantum jump can change by very many orders of magnitude when compared to rates obtained by multiplying lifetimes with occupation probabilities obtained via unitary transformation. The theory developed in 1987 for atomic fluorescence is here extended to transitions in transmon qubits. These systems differ from atoms in that they are read out with a harmonic cavity whose resonance is determined by the state of the qubit. We extend our analysis of atomic fluorescence to this infinite level system by treating the cavity as a quantum system. We find that next photon statistics is highly non exponential and when implemented will enable faster readout, such as on time scales shorter than the decay time of the cavity. Commonly used heterodyne measurements are applied on time scales longer than the cavity lifetime. The overlap between the next photon theory and the theory of heterodyne measurement which are described according to the Stochastic Schroedinger Equation is elucidated. In the limit of large dispersion the intrinsic error for next jump detection -- at short time -- tends to zero. Whereas for short time dyne detection the error remains finite for all values of dispersion.

We use radial quantization to compute Chern-Simons partition functions on handlebodies of arbitrary genus. The partition function is given by a particular transition amplitude between two states which are defined on the Riemann surfaces that define the (singular) foliation of the handlebody. The final state is a coherent state while on the initial state the holonomy operator has zero eigenvalue. The latter choice encodes the constraint that the gauge fields must be regular everywhere inside the handlebody. By requiring that the only singularities of the gauge field inside the handlebody must be compatible with Wilson loop insertions, we find that the Wilson loop shifts the holonomy of the initial state. Together with an appropriate choice of normalization, this procedure selects a unique state in the Hilbert space obtained from a Kähler quantization of the theory on the constant-radius Riemann surfaces. Radial quantization allows us to find the partition functions of Abelian Chern-Simons theories for handlebodies of arbitrary genus. For non-Abelian compact gauge groups, we show that our method reproduces the known partition function at genus one.

In our model, supersymmetry must be broken at a high scale in a hidden sector to ensure that the cutoff of the effective field theory is above the Hubble scale of inflation. The gravitino has a super-EeV mass and supersymmetry breaking is communicated to the observable sector through gravity mediation. Some mass scales of the supersymmetry-breaking soft terms in the observable sector can be parametrically smaller than the SUSY breaking scale. If a string realization of the new FI term were found, our model could be the basis for a low energy effective supergravity description of realistic superstring models of inflation.

First we reinterpret the reality constraint on the boundary graviton as the gauge fixing of a new local symmetry, called dual supertranslations. This symmetry extends the BMS group and bears many similarities to the dual (magnetic) gauge symmetry of electrodynamics. We use this new gauge symmetry to propose a new description of the TAUB-NUT space that does not contain closed time-like curves. Next we summarize progress towards the definition of Lorentz and super-Lorentz charges that commute with supertranslations and with the soft graviton mode.

Fermionic terms in a class of locally supersymmetric theories called "liberated supergravity" are nonrenormalizable interactions proportional to inverse powers of the supersymmetry breaking scale and Planck mass. This property defines an intrinsic cutoff for liberated supergravities, which are therefore effective theories valid only below energies that never exceed the cutoff. Requiring that the cutoff exceeds current theoretical and observational bounds shows that the new scalar potential terms allowed by liberated supergravity can neither change the cosmological constant predicted by supergravity by any observable amount, nor give measurable contributions to particle masses. We show that it is nevertheless possible to define a simple liberated supergravity model of slow roll inflation valid up to energy scales that are well above the Hubble parameter during inflation and exceeds observable limits after inflation. The key to constructing a viable model is to change the supersymmetry breaking scale, from a Planck-scale value during inflation, to TeV-scale after inflation.

We show that in an asymptotically flat space where an S-Matrix can be defined, dual supertranslations leave all its matrix elements invariant and the Hilbert space of asymptotic states factorizes into distinct super-selection sectors, labeled by their dual supertranslation charges. These results suggest that dual supertranslation may be interpreted as a redundant gauge symmetry of asymptotically flat spacetimes. This would allow to recast general relativity as a theory of diffeomorphisms possessing an additional asymptotic gauge symmetry. We then use the conjectured dual supertranslation gauge symmetry to construct a gravitational equivalent of the Wu-Yang monopole solution. The metric describing the solution is defined using two overlap** patches on the celestial sphere. The solution is regular on each one of the patches separately and differentiable in the overlap region, where the two descriptions are identical by virtue of a dual supertranslation gauge transformation. Our construction provides an alternative to Misner's interpretation of the Taub-NUT metric. In particular, we find that using our approach the Taub-NUT metric can be made regular everywhere on the celestial sphere and at the same time it is devoid of closed timelike curves, provided that the bound $\frac{m}{\ell} \leq \sqrt{\frac{5}{27}}$ on the ratio of mass to NUT charge is obeyed.

A spacelike surface with cylinder topology can be described by various sets of canonical variables within pure AdS3 gravity. Each is made of one real coordinate and one real momentum. The Hamiltonian can be either $H=0$ or it can be nonzero and we display the canonical transformations that map one into the other, in two relevant cases. In a choice of canonical coordinates, one of them is the cylinder aspect $q$, which evolves nontrivially in time. The time dependence of the aspect is an analytic function of time $t$ and an "angular momentum" $J$. By analytic continuation in both $t$ and $J$ we obtain a Euclidean evolution that can be described geometrically as the motion of a cylinder inside the region of the 3D hyperbolic space bounded by two "domes" (i.e. half spheres), which is topologically a solid torus. We find that for a given $J$ the Euclidean evolution cannot connect an initial aspect to an arbitrary final aspect; moreover, there are infinitely many Euclidean trajectories that connect any two allowed initial and final aspects. We compute the transition amplitude in two independent ways; first by solving exactly the time-dependent Schrödinger equation, then by summing in a sensible way all the saddle contributions, and we discuss why both approaches are mutually consistent.

We evaluate to one loop the functional integral that computes the partition functions of Chern-Simons theories based on compact groups, using the background field method and a covariant gauge fixing. We compare our computation with the results of other, less direct methods. We find that our method correctly computes the characters of irreducible representations of Kac-Moody algebras. To extend the computation to non-compact groups we need to perform an appropriate analytic continuation of the partition function of the compact group. Non-vacuum characters are found by inserting a Wilson loop in the functional integral. We then extend our method to Euclidean Anti-de Sitter pure gravity in three dimensions. The explicit computation unveils several interesting features and lessons. The most important among them is that the very definition of gravity in the first-order Chern-Simons formalism requires non-trivial analytic continuations of the gauge fields outside their original domains of definition.

Those calculations were carried out when the driven oscillations or Rabi flop** between the ground state and a strongly fluorescing state were fast compared to its lifetime. In systems with solid state Qubits the accessible parameter space is generally limited to the regime where oscillations are slower than the lifetime. In this paper we evaluate intermittency in atomic transitions, due to measurements with a null result, in this limit. During the dark periods the wave function of the continuously measured multilevel system is coherent.

We consider two applications of the factorization of infrared dynamics in QED and gravity. The first is a redefinition of the Lorentz transformations that makes them commute with supertranslations. The other is the process of particle creation near a black hole horizon. For the latter we show that the emission of soft particles factors out of the S-matrix in the fixed-background approximation and to leading order in the soft limit. The factorization is implemented by dressing the incoming and outgoing asymptotic states with clouds of soft photons and soft gravitons. We find that while the soft photon cloud has no effect, the soft graviton cloud induces a phase shift in the Bogolyubov coefficients relating the incoming and outgoing modes. However, the flux of outgoing particles, given by the absolute value of the Bogolyubov coefficient, is insensitive to this phase.

This corresponds to the critical level k=1 in the Wess-Zumino-Witten description. Previously, it was argued that a transition takes place at this special radius, from a phase dominated by black holes at larger radius to one dominated by long strings at smaller radius. We argue that the infinite tower of modes that become massless at k=1 is a signal of this transition. We propose a simple two-dimensional conformal field theory as the holographic dual to superstring theory at k=1. As evidence for our conjecture, we demonstrate that at large N our putative dual exactly reproduces the full spectrum of the long strings of the weakly coupled string theory, including states unprotected by supersymmetry.

The sigma model metric is no longer Kaehler when local supersymmetry becomes nonlinearly realized through the nilpotency of the supergravity auxiliary fields. In some cases the nonlinear realization eliminates one scalar propagating degree of freedom. This happens when the sigma model conformal-frame metric has co-rank 2. In the geometry of the inflaton, this effect eliminates its scalar superpartner. We show that the sigma model metric remains semidefinite positive in all cases, due the to positivity properties of the conformal-frame sigma model metric.

We show that large gauge transformations in asymptotically flat spacetime can be implemented by sandwiching a shell containing the ingoing hard particles between two finite-width shells of soft gauge excitations. Integration of the graviton Dirac bracket implies that our observable soft degrees of freedom obey the algebra imposed by Strominger on unobservable boundary degrees of freedom. Thus, we provide both a derivation and an observable realization of this algebra. The conservation laws associated with asymptotic symmetries are seen to arise physically from free propagation of infrared modes. This explains in physical terms our recent result that soft charges fail to constrain the hard scattering problem, and so cannot be relevant to the black hole information paradox.

We consider large gauge transformations of gravity and electromagnetism in D=4 asymptotically flat spacetime. Already at the classical level, we identify a canonical transformation that decouples the soft variables from the hard dynamics. We find that only the soft dynamics is constrained by BMS or large U(1) charge conservation. Physically this corresponds to the fact that sufficiently long-wavelength photons or gravitons that are added to the in-state will simply pass through the interaction region; they scatter trivially in their own sector. This implies in particular that the large gauge symmetries bear no relevance to the black hole information paradox. We also present the quantum version of soft decoupling. As a consistency check, we show that the apparent mixing of soft and hard modes in the original variables arises entirely from the long range field of the hard charges, which is fixed by gauge invariance and so contains no additional information.

Double trace deformations, that is products of two local operators, define perturbations of conformal field theories that can be studied exactly in the large-N limit. Even when the double trace deformation is irrelevant in the infrared, it is believed to flow to an ultraviolet fixed point. In this note we define the Kallen-Lehmann representation of the two-point function of a local operator O in a theory perturbed by the square of such operator. We use such representation to discover potential pathologies at intermediate points in the flow that may prevent to reach the UV fixed point. We apply the method to an "extremal" deformation that naively would flow to a UV fixed point where the operator O would saturate the unitarity bound. We find that the UV fixed point is not conformal and that the deformed two-point function propagates unphysical modes. We interpret the result as showing that the flow to the UV fixed point does not exist. This resolves a potential puzzle in the holographic interpretation of the deformation.

We perform a canonical quantization of pure gravity on AdS3 using as a technical tool its equivalence at the classical level with a Chern-Simons theory with gauge group SL(2,R)xSL(2,R). We first quantize the theory canonically on an asymptotically AdS space --which is topologically the real line times a Riemann surface with one connected boundary. Using the "constrain first" approach we reduce canonical quantization to quantization of orbits of the Virasoro group and Kaehler quantization of Teichmuller space. After explicitly computing the Kaehler form for the torus with one boundary component and after extending that result to higher genus, we recover known results, such as that wave functions of SL(2,R) Chern-Simons theory are conformal blocks. We find new restrictions on the Hilbert space of pure gravity by imposing invariance under large diffeomorphisms and normalizability of the wave function. The Hilbert space of pure gravity is shown to be the target space of Conformal Field Theories with continuous spectrum and a lower bound on operator dimensions. A projection defined by topology changing amplitudes in Euclidean gravity is proposed. It defines an invariant subspace that allows for a dual interpretation in terms of a Liouville CFT. Problems and features of the CFT dual are assessed and a new definition of the Hilbert space, exempt from those problems, is proposed in the case of highly-curved AdS3.

In hep-th/0106004, on the other hand, a state-dependent expectation value was found. Another puzzling feature of the theory is lack of cluster decomposition property in certain connected correlators. This note shows that both problems can be removed by defining the free energy of the spacetime boundary conformal field theory as the Legendre transform of the formula proposed in the literature. This corresponds to pass from a canonical ensemble, where the number of fundamental strings that create the background can fluctuate, to a microcanonical one, where it is fixed.

The supersymmetric extension of "Starobinsky" $R+αR^2$ models of inflation is particularly simple in the "new minimal" formalism of supergravity, where the inflaton has no scalar superpartners. This paper is devoted to matter couplings in such supergravity models. We show how in the new minimal formalism matter coupling presents certain features absent in other formalisms. In particular, for the large class of matter couplings considered in this paper, matter must possess an R-symmetry, which is gauged by the vector field which becomes dynamical in the "new minimal" completion of the $R+αR^2$ theory. Thus, in the dual formulation of the theory, where the gauge vector is part of a massive vector multiplet, the inflaton is the superpartner of the massive vector of a nonlinearly realized R-symmetry. The F-term potential of this theory is of no-scale type, while the inflaton potential is given by the D-term of the gauged R-symmetry. The absolute minimum of the potential is always exactly supersymmetric, so in this class of models if realistic vacua exist, they must be always metastable. We also briefly comment on possible generalizations of the examples discussed here and we exhibit some features of higher-curvature supergravity coupled to matter in the "old minimal" formalism.

We discuss an ${\cal R}+{\cal R}^n$ class of modified ${\cal N}=1$, D=4 supergravity models where the deformation is a monomial ${\cal R}^n\big|_F$ in the chiral scalar curvature multiplet ${\cal R}$ of the "old minimal" auxiliary field formulation. The scalaron and goldstino multiplets are dual to each other in this theory. Since one of them is not dynamical, this theory, as recently shown, cannot be used as the supersymmetric completion of $R+R^n$ gravity. This is confirmed by investigating the scalar potential and its critical points in the dual standard supergravity formulation with a single chiral multiplet with specific Kähler potential and superpotential. We study the vacuum structure of this dual theory and we find that there is always a supersymmetric Minkowski critical point which however is pathological for $n\geq 3$ as it corresponds to a corner ($n=3$) and a cusp ($n>3$) point of the potential. For $n>3$ an anti-de Sitter regular supersymmetric vacuum emerges. As a result, this class of models are not appropriate to describe inflation. We also find the mass spectrum and we provide a general formula for the masses of the scalars of a chiral multiplet around the anti-de Sitter critical point and their relation to $osp(1,4)$ unitary representations.

We discuss a supersymmetry breaking mechanism for N = 1 theories triggered by higher dimensional op- erators. We consider such operators for real linear and chiral spinor superfields that break superymmetry and reduce to the Volkov-Akulov action. We also consider supersymmetry breaking induced by a higher dimensional operator of a nonminimal scalar (complex linear) multiplet. The latter differs from the stan- dard chiral multiplet in its auxiliary sector, which contains, in addition to the complex scalar auxiliary of a chiral superfield, a complex vector and two spinors auxiliaries. By adding an appropriate higher di- mension operator, the scalar auxiliary may acquire a nonzero vev triggering spontaneous supersymmetry breaking. We find that the spectrum of the theory in the supersymmetry breaking vacuum consists of a free chiral multiplet and a constraint chiral superfield describing the goldstino. Interestingly, the latter turns out to be one of the auxiliary fermions, which becomes dynamical in the supersymmetry breaking vacuum. In all cases we are considering here, there is no sgoldstino mode and thus the goldstino does not have a superpartner. The sgoldstino is decoupled since the goldstino is one of the auxiliaries, which is propagating only in the supersymmetry breaking vacuum. We also point out how higher dimension operators introduce a potential for the propagating scalar of the theory.

In the de-Higgsed phase with vanishing g^2, the chiral and vector multiplets are non-interacting, and the potential vanishes. We present generic manifestly supersymmetric higher order corrections for these models. In particular, for a supersymmetric gravity model -R+ R^2 we derive manifestly supersymmetric corrections corresponding to R^n. The dual version corresponds to a standard supergravity model with a single scalar and a massive vector. It includes, in addition, higher Maxwell curvature/scalar interaction terms of the Born-Infeld type and a modified D-term scalar field potential. We use the dual version of the model to argue that higher order corrections do not affect the last 60 e-foldings of inflation; for example the ξR^4 correction is irrelevant as long as ξ< 10^{24}.

We present a superconformal master action for a class of supergravity models with one arbitrary function defining the Jordan frame. It leads to a gauge-invariant action for a real vector multiplet, which upon gauge fixing describes a massive vector multiplet, or to a dual formulation with a linear multiplet and a massive tensor field. In both cases the models have one real scalar, the inflaton, naturally suited for single-field inflation. Vectors and tensors required by supersymmetry to complement a single real scalar do not acquire vev's during inflation, so there is no need to stabilize the extra scalars which are always present in the theories with chiral matter multiplets. The new class of models can describe any inflaton potential which vanishes at its minimum and grows monotonically away from the minimum. In this class of supergravity models one can fit any desirable choice of inflationary parameters n_s and r.

We derive two sum rules by studying the low energy Compton scattering on a target of arbitrary (nonzero) spin j. In the first sum rule, we consider the possibility that the intermediate state in the scattering can have spin |j \pm 1| and the same mass as the target. The second sum rule applies if the theory at hand possesses intermediate narrow resonances with masses different from the mass of the scatterer. These sum rules are generalizations of the Gerasimov-Drell-Hearn-Weinberg sum rule. Along with the requirement of tree level unitarity, they relate different low energy couplings in the theory. Using these sum rules, we show that in certain cases the gyromagnetic ratio can differ from the "natural" value g=2, even at tree level, without spoiling perturbative unitarity. These sum rules can be used as constraints applicable to all supergravity and higher-spin theories that contain particles charged under some U(1) gauge field. In particular, applied to four dimensional N=8 supergravity in a spontaneously broken phase, these sum rules suggest that for the theory to have a good ultraviolet behavior, additional massive states need to be present, such as those coming from the embedding of the N=8 supergravity in type II superstring theory. We also discuss the possible implications of the sum rules for QCD in the large-N_c limit.

Abstract:
We investigate a higher-derivative scalar field model in a fixed d+1 dimensional AdS background as a toy model for a gravitational dual to a higher-rank logarithmic CFT. The holographic two-point correlation functions on the boundary agree with higher-rank LCFT correlation functions. For odd rank, the theory allows for a truncation to a nontrivial subspace with non-negative scalar product. We disc…

Abstract:
We study the dynamics of electric flux discharge by charged particle pair or spherical string or membrane production in various dimensions. When electric flux wraps at least one compact cycle, we find that a single "pair" production event can initiate a cascading decay in real time that "shorts out" the flux and discharges many units of it. This process arises from local dynamics in the compact sp…

This process arises from local dynamics in the compact space, and so is invisible in the dimensionally-reduced truncation. It occurs in theories as simple as the Schwinger model on a circle, and has implications for any theory with compact dimensions and electric flux, including string theories and the string landscape.

Abstract:
We discuss the problem of localization of 4D massless states in Randall-Sundrum 2 (one-brane) models. A Randall-Sundrum 2 construction starting from N=8 gauged supergravity in 5D Anti de Sitter space gives rise to an N=4 supergravity-matter system. We explicitly show that only the modes of the N=4 graviton supermultiplet localize on the 4D brane, streamlining and generalizing previous works. We al…

We also point out that while charged 1/4 BPS black holes do exist in the 4D theory, they are always produced in sets of total charge zero. This zero-charge configuration uplifts to a 5D metric without naked singularities, thus avoiding the curvature singularity of the 5D uplift of an isolated charged BPS black hole. Finally, we resolve a puzzle with localization of massless high spin fields on a (putative) Randall-Sundrum 2 construction based on Vasiliev's high spin theories. We show that while high spin fields do localize, the gauge symmetry that ensures decoupling of their unphysical polarizations is anomalous. This implies that the high spin fields must acquire a mass.
