Abstract:
Multiphoton ionization of sodium by femtosecond laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength in the range of laser peak intensities entering over-the-barrier ionization domain is studied. Photoelectron momentum distributions and the energy spectra are determined numerically by solving the time dependent Schroedinger equation for three values of the laser intensity from this domain. The calculated spectra agree well with the spectra obtained experimentally by Hart et al (Phys. Rev. A 2016 93 063426). A partial wave analysis of the spectral peaks related to Freeman resonances has shown that each peak is a superposition of the contributions of photoelectrons produced by the resonantly enhanced multiphoton ionization via different intermediate states. It is demonstrated that at specific laser intensities the selective ionization, which occurs predominantly through a single intermediate state, is possible.

Multiphoton ionization of sodium by laser pulses of 800 nm wavelength and 57 fs duration is studied in the range of laser peak intensities belonging to over-the-barrier ionization regime. Photoelectron momentum distributions (PMD) and the energy spectra are determined numerically by solving the time dependent Schrödinger equation. The calculated spectra agree well with the spectra obtained experimentally by Hart et al. [Phys. Rev. A 93, 063426 (2016)]. The contributions of photoelectrons with different values of the orbital quantum number in the PMD are determined by expanding the photoelectron wave function in terms of partial waves. Partial wave analysis of the spectral peaks related to Freeman resonances has shown that each peak has photoelectron contributions from different ionization channels which are characterized by different photoelectron energies and different symmetries of released photoelectron wave-packets. These findings are justified by calculating the populations of excited states during the pulse. Our analysis indicates that the contribution of specific ionization channels in the total photoelectron yield might be selectively increased by varying to some extent the values of pulse parameters used here.

We study cheating strategies against a practical four-state quantum bit-commitment protocol and its two-state variant when the underlying quantum channels are noisy and the cheating party is constrained to using single-qubit measurements only. We study cheating strategies against a practical four-state quantum bit-commitment protocol and its two-state variant when the underlying quantum channels are noisy and the cheating party is constrained to using single-qubit measurements only. We show that simply inferring the transmitted photons' states by using the Breidbart basis, optimal for ambiguous (minimum-error) state discrimination, does not directly produce an optimal cheating strategy for this bit-commitment protocol. We introduce a new strategy, based on certain post-measurement processes, and show it to have better chances at cheating than the direct approach. We also study to what extent sending forged geographical coordinates helps a dishonest party in breaking the binding security requirement. Finally, we investigate the impact of imperfect single-photon sources in the protocols. Our study shows that, in terms of the resources used, the four-state protocol is advantageous over the two-state version. The analysis performed can be straightforwardly generalised to any finite-qubit measurement, with the same qualitative results.

Possibility of state cloning is analyzed in two types of generalizations of quantum mechanics with nonlinear evolution. Possibility of state cloning is analyzed in two types of generalizations of quantum mechanics with nonlinear evolution. It is first shown that nonlinear Hamiltonian quantum mechanics does not admit cloning without the cloning machine. It is then demonstrated that the addition of the cloning machine, treated as a quantum or as a classical system, makes the cloning possible by nonlinear Hamiltonian evolution. However, a special type of quantum-classical theory, known as the mean-field Hamiltonian hybrid mechanics, does not admit cloning by natural evolution. The latter represents an example of a theory where it appears to be possible to communicate between two quantum systems at super-luminal speed, but at the same time it is impossible to clone quantum pure states.

Abstract:
Hamiltonian theory of hybrid quantum-classical systems is used to study dynamics of the classical subsystem coupled to different types of quantum systems. It is shown that the qualitative properties of orbits of the classical subsystem clearly indicate if the quantum subsystem does or does not have additional conserved observables.

Representation of classical dynamics by unitary transformations has been used to develop unified description of hybrid classical-quantum systems with particular type of interaction, and to formulate abstract systems interpolating between classical and quantum ones. We solved the problem of unitary description of two interpolating systems with general potential interaction. The general solution is used to show that with arbitrary potential interaction between the two interpolating systems the evolution of the so called unobservable variables is decoupled from that of the observable ones if and only if the interpolation parameters in the two interpolating systems are equal.

A novel theory of hybrid quantum-classical systems is developed, utilizing the mathematical framework of constrained dynamical systems on the quantum-classical phase space. Both, the quantum and the classical descriptions of the respective parts of the hybrid system are treated as fundamental. Therefore, the description of the quantum-classical interaction has to be postulated, and includes the effects of neglected degrees of freedom. Dynamical law of the theory is given in terms of nonlinear stochastic differential equations with Hamiltonian and gradient terms. The theory provides a successful dynamical description of the collapse during quantum measurement.

General statistical ensembles in the Hamiltonian formulation of hybrid quantum-classical systems are analyzed. It is argued that arbitrary probability densities on the hybrid phase space must be considered as the class of possible physically distinguishable statistical ensembles of hybrid systems. Nevertheless, statistical operators associated with the hybrid system and with the quantum subsystem can be consistently defined. Dynamical equations for the statistical operators representing the mixed states of the hybrid system and its quantum subsystem are derived and analyzed. In particular, these equations irreducibly depend on the total probability density on the hybrid phase space.
