Accurately predicting the electronic energy deposition of ions in materials is an important challenge in both fundamental and applied research. While employing ab initio simulations to investigate electronic stop** of ions in matter holds promise, its combined use with experimental measurements paves the way for obtaining reliable data. In this paper, we present a collaborative study using real-time time-dependent density functional theory and experimental methods to determine the electronic stop** power of hydrogen and helium ions in tungsten, a primary candidate material for future nuclear fusion devices. While calculated stop** powers in hyperchanneling trajectories are significantly lower than the experimental data, off-center and random geometries demonstrate a better agreement. We show that the deviation from velocity proportionality for both projectiles traversing the hyperchanneling directions can be explained through the existence of a threshold velocity leading to the activation of semicore states. Additionally, we analyse the pseudopotential and the trajectory dependence of computed electronic energy losses. It is demonstrated that the role of including inner-shell electrons varies depending on the velocity range. While these states play a crucial role at high projectile velocities by introducing additional dissipation channels, their impact diminishes in the low-velocity range. Finally, we introduce a simple expression that links electronic energy losses in different trajectories to local electron density, and we show that utilizing this formula allows for quite accurate predictions of stop** powers around the Bragg peak.

Molecular chirality plays fundamental roles in biology. The chiral response of a molecule occurs at a specific spectral position, determined by its molecular structure. This fingerprint can be transferred to other spectral regions via the interaction with localized surface plasmon resonances of gold nanoparticles. Here, we demonstrate that molecular chirality transfer occurs also for plasmonic lattice modes, providing a very effective and tunable means to control chirality. We use colloidal self-assembly to fabricate non-close packed, periodic arrays of gold nanoparticles, which are embedded in a polymer film containing chiral molecules. In the presence of the chiral molecules, the SLRs become optically active, i.e. showing handedness-dependent excitation. Numerical simulations with varying lattice parameters show circular dichroism peaks shifting along with the spectral positions of the lattice modes, corroborating the chirality transfer to these collective modes. A semi-analytical model based on the coupling of molecular and plasmonic resonances rationalizes this chirality transfer.

Polar liquids are strong absorbers of electromagnetic waves in the terahertz range, therefore, historically such liquids have not been considered as good candidates for terahertz sources. However, flowing liquid medium has explicit advantages, such as a higher damage threshold compared to solid-state sources and more efficient ionization process compared to gases. Here we report systematic study of efficient generation of terahertz radiation in flat liquid jets under sub-picosecond single-color optical excitation. We demonstrate how medium parameters such as molecular density, ionization energy and linear absorption contribute to the terahertz emission from the flat liquid jets. Our simulation and experimental measurements reveal that the terahertz energy has quasi-quadratic dependence on the optical excitation pulse energy. Moreover, the optimal pump pulse duration, which depends on the thickness of the jet is theoretically predicted and experimentally confirmed. The obtained optical-to-terahertz energy conversion efficiency is more than 0.05%. It is comparable to the commonly used optical rectification in most of electro-optical crystals and two-color air filamentation. These results, significantly advancing prior research, can be successfully applied to create a new alternative source of terahertz radiation.

Abstract:
A classification of double flag varieties of complexity 0 and 1 is obtained. An application of this problem to decomposing tensor products of irreducible representations of semisimple Lie groups is considered.
