We consider a finite time quantum heat engine analogous to finite time classical Carnot heat engine with a working substance of spin half particles. We study the efficiency at maximum $\dotΩ$ figure of merit of the quantum heat engine of spin half particles as a working substance in the presence of external magnetic field. The efficiency of this engine at maximum $\dotΩ$ figure of merit shows anomalous behavior in certain region of particles population levels. Further, we find that the efficiency at maximum $\dotΩ$ figure exceeds all the known bounds and even approaches the Carnot efficiency at finite time. Our study indicates that the population of spin half particles plays a crucial role in quantum heat engine whose collective effect in the quantum regime can provide superior engine performance with higher efficiency.

The effect of opposite sign of interactions in a single-walled Ising nanotube is investigated using the Wang-Landau algorithm. The thermodynamic observables are calculated from the estimated density of states (DOS) with and without the presence of an external magnetic field. Irrespective of the applied magnetic field, a symmetric trend of DOS is observed for opposite sign of interactions which is in contrast to the asymmetric trend for same sign of interactions. Further, two types of anti-ferromagnetic (AFM) orderings, namely A-type and C-type anti-ferromagnetic order, are observed for opposite sign of interactions. These AFM spin orientations are switched to ferromagnetic (FM) phase by increasing the applied magnetic field ($B$). However, the spin ordering changes from the ordered AFM/FM phase to a disordered paramagnetic phase by increasing the temperature. Phase diagram shows that these three phases coexist around $B=2.0$. This study indicates that, by properly tuning the magnetic properties, the single-walled nanotube can be used for fabrication of new types of magnetic storage nano materials.

In this paper, we study the role and relevance of the cost for an invariant-based shortcut to adiabaticity enabled qubit heat engine operates in a quantum Otto cycle. We consider a qubit heat engine with Landau-Zener Hamiltonian and improve its performance using the Lewis-Riesenfeld invariant-based shortcut to adiabaticity method. Addressing the importance of cost for better performance, the paper explores its relationship with the work and efficiency of the heat engine. We analyze the cost variation with the time duration of non-adiabatic unitary processes involved in the heat engine cycle. The cost required to attain the quasi-static performance of the qubit heat engine is also discussed. We found the efficiency lost due to non-adiabaticity of the engine can be revived using the shortcut method and it is even possible to attain quasi-static performance under finite time with higher cost.

The nanotube architecture used in the present study utilizes the spin half Ising model with nearest neighbors interaction and obtained various magnetic orderings namely, ferromagnetic, G-type anti-ferromagnetic, A-type anti-ferromagnetic, and C-type anti-ferromagnetic. It is also found that the phase changes from ferromagnetic/anti-ferromagnetic to paramagnetic with the modification of system's control parameters. The transition temperatures is determined for various interaction strength in the absence of magnetic field and for fixed interaction strength with the inclusion of external magnetic field. The present study confirms the transition from ferromagnetic /anti-ferromagnetic to paramagnetic is a second order transition.

There has been many studies on gases which obeys Van der Waal's equation of state. However there is no specific and direct studies of Van der Waal's gas which undergoes adiabatic processes are available in the undergraduate text books and also in literature. In an adiabatic process there is no heat energy exchange between the system and its surroundings. In this article, we find that the Van der Waal's equation for the adiabatic process as $\left(P+\frac{n^2a}{V^2}\right) \left(V-nb\right)^Γ=\mbox{constant}$, where $P$ is the pressure, $V$ is the volume, $n$ is the number of moles of the Van der Waal's gas, $a$ and $b$ are Van der Waal's constant and $Γ$ is a factor which relates the specific heat at constant pressure and at constant volume. We use this relation explicitly and obtained the efficiency of a Carnot engine whose working substance obeys Van der Waal's equation of state. Our simplest approach may provide clear idea to the undergraduate students that $Γ$ is different from $γ$ of the ideal gas for an adiabatic process. We also shown that the efficiency of the Carnot engine is independent of the working substance.

We study the performance of a three-terminal thermoelectric device such as heat engine and refrigerator with broken time-reversal symmetry by applying the unified trade-off figure of merit ($\dotΩ$ criterion) which accounts for both useful energy and losses. For heat engine, we find that a thermoelectric device working under the maximum $\dotΩ$ criterion gives a significantly better performance than a device working at maximum power output. Within the framework of linear irreversible thermodynamics such a direct comparison is not possible for refrigerators, however, our study indicates that, for refrigerator, the maximum cooling load gives a better performance than the maximum $\dotΩ$ criterion for a larger asymmetry. Our results can be useful to choose a suitable optimization criterion for operating a real thermoelectric device with broken time-reversal symmetry.

We find the criterion in which the optimized efficiency obtained by this minimally nonlinear irreversible heat engine can reach the reversible efficiency under the tight coupling condition: a condition of no heat leakage between the system and the reservoirs. We assume the rate of heat transfer from hot to cold heat reservoir obeys Fourier law and discuss physical conditions under which one can obtain the reversible efficiency in a finite time with finite power. The temperature at which the transition takes place is called the theta temperature. The value of theta temperature depends on the chosen lattices. The value of theta temperature for ISAW on FCC lattice is reported as $6.46$ in a simulation study [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 135}, 204903 (2011)]. Latter it has been reported as $7.614$ [J. Chem. Phys. {\bf 138}, 024902 (2013)]. Simulations in these two studies involved long chains with over 2000 monomers. In this paper, we present a method that gives a reliable estimate of the theta temperature of ISAW on FCC lattice using chains of shorter walk lengths (less than 100 monomers). We compute density states of ISAW on FCC lattice by employing growth walk algorithm and then we use the recently introduced pseudo order parameter method to estimate the theta temperature. The value obtained from our method agrees very well with latter reported result of $7.614$. In order to corroborate our result we also estimate the theta temperature using the celebrated partition function zeroes method.

The effect of interaction of the feedback controller with the system is to reduce the entropy of the system. We define the entropy reduction for the single trajectory and show that the overall entropy production for the stochastic system with feedback control can be either positive or negative. The negative entropy production has been studied earlier for a simple system with velocity dependent feedback control [K. H. Kim and H. Qian, Phys. Rev. Lett. {\bf 93}, 120602 (2004)]. However, the generalized Jarzynski equality under forward feedback control has been proved by consider that the physical systems under feedback control should locally satisfies the detailed fluctuation theorem. We use the same formalism and derive the generalized detailed fluctuation theorem under nonequilibrium feedback control. It is well known that the exponential average in one direction limits the calculation of precise free energy differences. The knowledge of measurements from both directions usually gives improved results. In this aspect, the generalized detailed fluctuation theorem can be very useful in free energy calculations for system driven under nonequilibrium feedback control.

We show that the Density of States (DoS) for lattice Self Avoiding Walks can be estimated by using an inverse algorithm, called flatIGW, whose step-growth rules are dynamically adjusted by requiring the energy histogram to be locally flat. Here, the (attractive) energy associated with a configuration is taken to be proportional to the number of non-bonded nearest neighbor pairs (contacts). The energy histogram is able to explicitly direct the growth of a walk because the step-growth rule of the Interacting Growth Walk \cite{IGW} samples the available nearest neighbor sites according to the number of contacts they would make. We have obtained the complex Fisher zeros corresponding to the DoS, estimated for square lattice walks of various lengths, and located the $θ$ temperature by extrapolating the finite size values of the real zeros to their asymptotic value, $\sim 1.49$ (reasonably close to the known value, $\sim 1.50$ \cite{barkema}).
