High-dimensional photonic entanglement is a promising candidate for error-protected quantum information processing with improved capacity. Encoding high-dimensional qudits in the carrier frequency of photons combines ease of generation, universal single-photon gates, and compatibility with fiber transmission for high-capacity quantum communication. Recent landmark experiments have impressively demonstrated quantum interference of a few frequency modes, yet the certification of massive-dimensional frequency entanglement has remained an open challenge. This study shows how to harness the large frequency-entanglement inherent in standard continuous-wave spontaneous parametric down-conversion processes. It further reports a record certification of discretized frequency entanglement, combined with a novel approach for certification that is both highly efficient and nonlocally implementable. This technique requires very few measurements and does not require assumptions on the state. The work opens the possibility for utilizing this encoding in quantum communications and in quantum information science in general.

Abstract:
Active stereovision systems for the 3D measurement of surfaces rely on the sequential projection of different fringe patterns onto the scene to robustly and accurately generate 3D surface data. This limits the temporal resolution to the time by which a sufficiently high number of patterns can be projected and recorded. Active stereovision systems for the 3D measurement of surfaces rely on the sequential projection of different fringe patterns onto the scene to robustly and accurately generate 3D surface data. This limits the temporal resolution to the time by which a sufficiently high number of patterns can be projected and recorded. By encoding patterns spectrally and recording them with a hyperspectral imager, it is possible to record several patterns in a single image, limiting the temporal resolution to only the duration of the illumination. A picosecond 3D surface measurement was demonstrated using a high pulse energy femtosecond Ti:Sa laser, spectrally broadened in a hollow core fiber, and two hyperspectral cameras recording the patterns generated by diffraction at an Echelle grating.

Entanglement is a universal resource in quantum networks, yet entangled photon sources are typically custom-made for a specific use case. Versatility, both in terms of state modulation and tunability of the temporal properties of the photons, is the key to flexible network architectures and cryptographic primitives that go beyond quantum key distribution. Here, we report on a flexible source design that produces high-quality entanglement in continuous-wave and GHz-rate-pulsed operation modes. Utilizing off-the-shelf optical components, our approach uses a fiber-based Sagnac loop to generate polarization-entangled photons at telecom wavelength with high efficiency and fidelities above 0.99. Phase modulation up to GHz before entangled state generation is also possible for fast entangled state switching. We show phase modulation at 100 MHz with an average fidelity of 0.95. Furthermore, the source 60 nm spectral bandwidth is entirely compatible with fully reconfigurable wavelength-multiplexed quantum networks.

Event synchronisation is a ubiquitous task, with applications ranging from 5G technology to industrial automation and smart power grids. The emergence of quantum communication networks will further increase the demand for precise synchronization in the optical and electronic domains, which implies significant resource overhead, such as the requirement for ultrastable clocks or additional synchronization lasers. Here we show how temporal correlations of energy-time entangled photons may be harnessed for synchronisation in quantum networks. We achieve stable synchronisation jitter <68 ps with as few as 44 correlated detection events per 100-ms data package and demonstrate feasibility in realistic emulated high-loss link scenarios, including atmospheric turbulence. In contrast to previous work, this is accomplished without any external timing reference and only simple crystal oscillators. Our approach replaces the optical and electronic transmission of timing signals with classical communication and computer-aided postprocessing. It can be easily integrated into a wide range of quantum communication networks and could pave the way to future applications in entanglement-based secure time transmission.
