Memories of a Theoretical Physicist
Abstract: While I was dealing with a brain injury and finding it difficult to work, two friends (Derek Westen, a friend of the KITP, and Steve Shenker, with whom I was recently collaborating), suggested that a new direction might be good. Black Holes and Random Matrices
Abstract: We argue that the late time behavior of horizon fluctuations in large anti-de Sitter (AdS) black holes is governed by the random matrix dynamics characteristic of quantum chaotic systems. Our main tool is the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev (SYK) model, which we use as a simple model of a black hole. We use an analytically continued partition function $|Z(β+it)|^2$ as well as correlation functions as diagnostic… ▽ More

The Black Hole Information Problem
Abstract: The black hole information problem has been a challenge since Hawking's original 1975 paper. It led to the discovery of AdS/CFT, which gave a partial resolution of the paradox. However, recent developments, in particular the firewall puzzle, show that there is much that we do not understand. Four-point function in the IOP matrix model
Abstract: The IOP model is a quantum mechanical system of a large-$N$ matrix oscillator and a fundamental oscillator, coupled through a quartic interaction. It was introduced previously as a toy model of the gauge dual of an AdS black hole, and captures a key property that at infinite $N$ the two-point function decays to zero on long time scales. The Spectrum in the Sachdev-Ye-Kitaev Model
Abstract: The SYK model consists of $N\gg 1$ fermions in $0+1$ dimensions with a random, all-to-all quartic interaction. Recently, Kitaev has found that the SYK model is maximally chaotic and has proposed it as a model of holography. We solve the Schwinger-Dyson equation and compute the spectrum of two-particle states in SYK, finding both a continuous and discrete tower. The four-point function is expressed… ▽ More

Why trust a theory? Some further remarks (part 1)
Abstract: I expand on some ideas from my recent review "String theory to the rescue," I discuss my use of Bayesian reasoning. I argue that it can be useful but that it is very far from the central point of the discussion. I then review my own personal history with the multiverse. Finally I respond to some of the criticisms of Ellis and Silk, which initiated this interesting discussion.

String theory to the rescue
Abstract: The search for a theory of quantum gravity faces two great challenges: the incredibly small scales of the Planck length and time, and the possibility that the observed constants of nature are in part the result of random processes. A priori, one might have expected these to be insuperable obstacles. However, clues from observed physics, and the discovery of string theory, raise the hope that the u… ▽ More

Brane/antibrane dynamics and KKLT stability
Abstract: String theory has few or no stable nonsupersymmetric or de Sitter vacua, only metastable ones. Antibranes are a simple source of supersymmetry breaking, as in the KKLT model, but various arguments have been given that these fail to produce the desired vacua. Proper analysis of the system requires identifying the correct effective field theories at various scales. We find that it reproduces the KKL… ▽ More

Violations of the Born rule in cool state-dependent horizons
Abstract: The black hole information problem has motivated many proposals for new physics. Chaos in the black hole S-matrix
Abstract: Recent work by Shenker, Stanford, and Kitaev has related the black hole horizon geometry to chaotic behavior. We extend this from eternal black holes to black holes that form and then evaporate. This leads to an identity for the change in the black hole S-matrix (over times shorter than the scrambling time) due an addition infalling particle, elaborating an idea of 't Hooft.

Bulk-Boundary Duality, Gauge Invariance, and Quantum Error Correction

Gauge/gravity duality
Abstract: We review the emergence of gravity from gauge theory in the context of AdS/CFT duality. We discuss the evidence for the duality, its lessons for gravitational physics, generalizations, and open questions.

Open Heterotic Strings
Abstract: We classify potential cosmic strings according to the topological charge measurable outside the string core. We conjecture that in string theory it is this charge that governs the stability of long strings. This would imply that the SO(32) heterotic string can have endpoints, but not the E_8 x E_8 heterotic string. We give various arguments in support of this conclusion.

Bethe Ansatz for a Quantum Supercoset Sigma Model
Abstract: We study an integrable conformal OSp(2m + 2|2m) supercoset model as an analog to the AdS_5 X S^5 superstring world-sheet theory. Using the known S-matrix for this system, we obtain integral equations for states of large particle density in an SU(2) sector, which are exact in the sigma model coupling constant. As a check, we derive as a limit the general classical Bethe equation of Kazakov, Marsh… ▽ More

Introduction to Cosmic F- and D-Strings
Abstract: In these lectures I discuss the possibility that superstrings of cosmic length might exist and be observable. I first review the original idea of cosmic strings arising as gauge theory solitons, and discuss in particular their network properties and the observational bounds that rule out cosmic strings as the principal origin of structure in our universe. I then consider cosmic superstrings, inc… ▽ More

Cosmic Superstrings Revisited
Abstract: It is possible that superstrings, as well as other one-dimensional branes, could have been produced in the early universe and then expanded to cosmic size today. I discuss the conditions under which this will occur, and the signatures of these strings. Such cosmic superstrings could be the brightest objects visible in gravitational wave astronomy, and might be distinguishable from gauge theory c… ▽ More
