Chiral Spin Liquids (CSL) based on spin-1/2 fermionic Projected Entangled Pair States (fPEPS) are considered on the square lattice. First, fPEPS approximants of Gutzwiller-projected Chern insulators (GPCI) are investigated by Variational Monte Carlo (VMC) techniques on finite size tori. We show that such fPEPS of finite bond dimension can correctly capture the topological properties of the chiral spin liquid, as the exact GPCI, with the correct topological ground state degeneracy on the torus. Further, more general fPEPS are considered and optimized (on the infinite plane) to describe the CSL phase of a chiral frustrated Heisenberg antiferromagnet. The chiral modes are computed on the edge of a semi-infinite cylinder (of finite circumference) and shown to follow the predictions from Conformal Field Theory. In contrast to their bosonic analogs the (optimized) fPEPS do not suffer from the replication of the chiral edge mode in the odd topological sector.

In condensed matter, Chiral Spin Liquids (CSL) are quantum spin analogs of electronic Fractional Quantum Hall states (in the continuum) or Fractional Chern Insulators (on the lattice). As the latter, CSL are remarquable states of matter, exhibiting topological order and chiral edge modes. Preparing CSL on quantum simulators like cold atom platforms is still an open challenge. Here we propose a simple setup on a finite cluster of spin-1/2 located at the sites of a square lattice. Using a Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) non-chiral spin liquid as initial state on which fast time-modulations of strong nearest-neighbor Heisenberg couplings are applied, following different protocols (out-of-equilibrium quench or semi-adiabatic ram** of the drive), we show the slow emergence of such a CSL phase. An effective Floquet dynamics, obtained from a high-frequency Magnus expansion of the drive Hamiltonian, provides a very accurate and simple framework fully capturing the out-of-equilibrium dynamics. An analysis of the resulting prepared states in term of Projected Entangled Pair states gives further insights on the topological nature of the chiral phase. Finally, we discuss possible applications to quantum computing.

While gauge symmetry is a well-established requirement for representing topological orders in projected entangled-pair state (PEPS), its impact on the properties of low-lying excited states remains relatively unexplored. Here we perform PEPS simulations of low-energy dynamics in the Kitaev honeycomb model, which supports fractionalized gauge flux (vison) excitations. We identify gauge symmetry emerging upon optimizing an unbiased PEPS ground state. Using the PEPS adapted local mode approximation, we further classify the low-lying excited states by discerning different vison sectors. Our simulations of spin and spin-dimer dynamical correlations establish close connections with experimental observations. Notably, the selection rule imposed by the locally conserved visons results in nearly flat dispersions in momentum space for excited states belonging to the 2-vison or 4-vison sectors.

We use the finite projected entangled pair state (PEPS) method to investigate the global phase diagram of the spin-1/2 square-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ antiferromagnetic (AFM) Heisenberg model. The ground state phase diagram is established with a rich variety of phases: AFM, gapless quantum spin liquid, valence-bond solid (VBS), stripe, and incommensurate spiral phases. The nature of the VBS region is revealed, containing a plaquette VBS and a mixed columnar-plaquette VBS, with the emergence of short-range incommensurate spin correlations in some region. The long-range incommensurate magnetic phase is also explicitly characterized as a planar spiral with incommensurate spatial periodicities. Most interestingly, there exists several multicritical points connecting different phases. These findings elucidate the true nature of the long-standing square-lattice $J_1$-$J_2$-$J_3$ antiferromagnet at zero-temperature. Our results also pave the way to accurately simulate complex two-dimensional quantum systems that may host nonuniform features by means of finite PEPS.

The parton approach for quantum spin liquids gives a transparent description of low-energy elementary excitations, e.g., spinons and emergent gauge-field fluctuations. The latter ones are directly coupled to the hop**/pairing of spinons. By using the fermionic representation of the $U(1)$ Dirac state on the kagome lattice and variational Monte Carlo techniques to include the Gutzwiller projection, we analyse the effect of modifying the gauge fields in the spinon kinematics. In particular, we construct low-energy monopole excitations, which are shown to be gapless in the thermodynamic limit. States with a finite number of monopoles or with a finite density of them are also considered, with different patterns of the gauge fluxes. We show that these chiral states are not stabilized in the Heisenberg model with nearest-neighbor super-exchange couplings, and the Dirac state corresponds to the lowest-energy Ansatz within this family of variational wave functions. Our results support the idea that spinons with a gapless conical spectrum coexist with gapless monopole excitations, even for the spin-1/2 case.

Motivated by the search for chiral spin liquids (CSL), we consider a simple model defined on the kagome lattice of interacting SU(3) spins (in the fundamental representation) including two-site and three-site permutations between nearest neighbor sites and on triangles, respectively. By combining analytical developments and various numerical techniques, namely exact Lanczos diagonalizations and tensor network variational approaches, we find a rich phase diagram with non-topological (``trivial") and topological (possibly chiral) gapped spin liquids (SLs). Trivial spin liquids include an Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT)-like phase and a trimerized phase, the latter breaking the inversion center between the up and down triangles of the kagome lattice. A topological SL is stabilized in a restricted part of the phase diagram by the time-reversal symmetry breaking (complex) 3-site permutation term. Analyzing the chiral edge modes of this topological SL on long cylinders or on finite disks, we have come up with two competing scenarios, either a CSL or a double Chern-Simon SL characterized by a single or by two counter-propagating Wess-Zumino-Witten SU(3)$_1$ chiral mode(s), respectively. In the vicinity of the extended ferromagnetic region we have found a magnetic phase corresponding either to a modulated canted ferromagnet or to a uniform partially magnetized ferromagnet.

Then, by applying the Gutzwiller projection to a bi-layer GfPEPSs, spin-1/2 Abelian and non-Abelian CSLs are obtained for Chern number $C=1$ and $C=2$, respectively. As a consequence of the topological obstruction for GfPEPSs, very weak Gossamer tails are observed in the correlation functions of the fermionic projected entangled pair state (PEPS) ansatze, suggesting that the no-go theorem for chiral PEPS is universal but does not bring any practical limitation. Remarkably, without fine tuning, all topological sectors can be constructed showing the expected number of chiral branches in the respective entanglement spectra, providing a sharp improvement with respect to the known bosonic PEPS approach.

Within the Projected Entangled Pair State (PEPS) tensor network formalism, a simple update (SU) method has been used to investigate the time evolution of a two-dimensional U(1) critical spin-1/2 spin liquid under Hamiltonian quench [Phys. Rev. B 106, 195132 (2022)]. Here we introduce two different variational frameworks to describe the time dynamics of SU(2)-symmetric translationally-invariant PEPS, aiming to improve the accuracy. In one approach, after using a Trotter-Suzuki decomposition of the time evolution operator in term of two-site elementary gates, one considers a single bond embedded in an environment approximated by a Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group (CTMRG). A variational update of the two tensors on the bond is performed under the application of the elementary gate and then, after symmetrization of the site tensors, the environment is updated. In the second approach, a cluster optimization is performed on a finite (periodic) cluster, maximizing the overlap of the exact time-evolved state with a symmetric finite-size PEPS ansatz. Observables are then computed on the infinite lattice contracting the infinite-PEPS (iPEPS) by CTMRG. We show that the variational schemes outperform the SU method and remain accurate over a significant time interval before hitting the entanglement barrier. Studying the spectrum of the transfer matrix, we find that the asymptotic correlations are very well preserved under time evolution, including the critical nature of the singlet correlations, as expected from the Lieb-Robinson (LR) bound theorem. Consistently, the system (asymptotic) boundary is found to bedescribed by the same Conformal Field Theory of central charge c = 1 during time evolution. We also compute the time-evolution of the short distance spin-spin correlations and estimate the LR velocity.

The infinite projected entangled simplex state (iPESS), a type of tensor network (TN) state, has been used successfully for simulating and characterizing {\it non-chiral} spin liquids on the kagome lattice. Here, we demonstrate that iPESS also provides a faithful representation of a {\it chiral} spin liquid (CSL) on the same lattice, namely the ground state of the spin-$1/2$ kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet with a scalar chirality. By classifying local tensors according to SU$(2)$ and point group symmetries, we construct a chiral ansatz breaking reflection $P$ and time reversal $T$ symmetries while preserving $PT$. The variational TN states are shown to host, for bond dimension $D\ge 8$, a chiral gapless entanglement spectrum following SU$(2)_1$ conformal field theory. The correlation function shows a small weight long-range tail complying with the prediction of the TN bulk-edge correspondence. %{\color{red}With more constraints included, the chiral ansatz is reduced to a non-chiral one which preserves full point group symmetries due to an emergent {\it tensor conservation law} and is of relevance to the ground state at the Heisenberg point. Lastly, by simulations in the complete ansatz family we discuss the transition from the non-chiral spin liquid to the CSL induced by the scalar chirality term.} We identify a non-chiral manifold spanned by only a subset of symmetric tensors where a new emergent {\it tensor conservation law} is realized. This allows us to both probe the stability of the non-chiral spin liquid and discuss its transition to CSL induced by a scalar chirality term.

By using both variational Monte Carlo (based upon Gutzwiller-projected fermionic wave functions) and tensor-network approaches (built from infinite projected-entangled pair/simplex states), we show that the ground state develops a finite magnetization for $J_D/J \gtrsim 0.03 - 0.04$, while the gapless spin liquid remains stable for smaller values of the Dzyaloshinskii-Moriya interaction. The relatively small value of $J_D/J$ for which magnetic order sets in is particularly relevant for the interpretation of low-temperature behaviors of kagome antiferromagnets, including ZnCu$_{3}$(OH)$_{6}$Cl$_{2}$. In addition, we assess the spin dynamical structure factors and the corresponding low-energy spectrum, by using the variational Monte Carlo technique. The existence of a continuum of excitations above the magnon modes is reported within the magnetically ordered phase, similarly to what has been detected by inelastic neutron scattering on Cs$_{2}$Cu$_{3}$SnF$_{12}$.

Using its representation as a special point of a broad manifold of SU($2$)-symmetric, translationnally invariant, Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS), we compute its non-equilibrium dynamics upon turning on inter-site Heisenberg interactions. We show that projecting the time-evolution onto the PEPS manifold remains accurate at small time scales. We also find that the state evolves within a PEPS sub-manifold characterized by a U($1$) gauge symmetry, suggesting that the Coulomb phase is stable under such unitary evolution.

Here, starting from a simple spin-1/2 chiral frustrated Heisenberg model, we show that a faithful representation of the chiral spin liquid phase is in fact possible in terms of a generic PEPS upon variational optimization. We find a perfectly chiral gapless edge mode and a rapid decay of correlation functions at short distances consistent with a bulk gap, concomitant with a gossamer long-range tail originating from a PEPS bulk-edge correspondence. For increasing bond dimension, (i) the rapid decrease of spurious features -- SU(2) symmetry breaking and long-range tails in correlations -- together with (ii) a faster convergence of the ground state energy as compared to state-of-the-art cylinder matrix-product state simulations involving far more variational parameters, prove the fundamental relevance of the PEPS ansatz for simulating systems with chiral topological order.

A quantum spin liquid (QSL) is a novel phase of matter with long-range entanglement where localized spins are highly correlated with the vanishing of magnetic order. Such exotic quantum states provide the opportunities to develop new theoretical frameworks for many-body physics and have the potential application in realizing robust quantum computations. Here we show that a gapless QSL can naturally emerge from a deconfined quantum critical point (DQCP), which is originally proposed to describe Landau forbidden continuous phase transition between antiferromagnetic (AFM) and valence-bond solid (VBS) phases. Via large-scale tensor network simulations of a square-lattice spin-1/2 frustrated Heisenberg model, both QSL state and DQCP-type AFM-VBS transition are observed. With tuning coupling constants, the AFM-VBS transition vanishes and instead, a gapless QSL phase gradually develops in between. Remarkably, along the phase boundaries of AFM-QSL and QSL-VBS transitions, we always observe the same correlation length exponents $ν\approx 1.0$, which is intrinsically different from the one of the DQCP-type transition, indicating new types of universality classes. Our results explicitly demonstrate a new scenario for understanding the emergence of gapless QSL from an underlying DQCP. The discovered QSL phase survives in a large region of tuning parameters and we expect its experimental realizations in solid state materials or quantum simulators.

We assess the ground-state phase diagram of the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice by employing Gutzwiller-projected fermionic wave functions. Within this framework, different states can be represented, defined by distinct unprojected fermionic Hamiltonians that include hop** and pairing terms, as well as a coupling to local Zeeman fields to generate magnetic order. For $J_2=0$, the so-called U(1) Dirac state, in which only hop** is present (such as to generate a $π$-flux in the hexagons), has been shown to accurately describe the exact ground state [Y. Iqbal, F. Becca, S. Sorella, and D. Poilblanc, Phys. Rev. B 87, 060405 (2013); Y.-C. He, M. P. Zaletel, M. Oshikawa, and F. Pollmann, Phys. Rev. X 7, 031020 (2017)]. Here, we show that its accuracy improves in presence of a small antiferromagnetic super-exchange $J_2$, leading to a finite region where the gapless spin liquid is stable; then, for $J_2/J_1=0.11(1)$, a first-order transition to a magnetic phase with pitch vector ${\bf q}=(0,0)$ is detected, by allowing magnetic order within the fermionic Hamiltonian. Instead, for small ferromagnetic values of $|J_2|/J_1$, the situation is more contradictory. While the U(1) Dirac state remains stable against several perturbations in the fermionic part (i.e., dimerization patterns or chiral terms), its accuracy clearly deteriorates on small systems, most notably on $36$ sites where exact diagonalization is possible. Then, upon increasing the ratio $|J_2|/J_1$, a magnetically ordered state with $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ periodicity eventually overcomes the U(1) Dirac spin liquid. Within the ferromagnetic $J_{2}$ regime, evidence is shown in favor of a first-order transition at $J_2/J_1=-0.065(5)$.

In the physics of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) effect, a zoo of Abelian topological phases can be obtained by varying the magnetic field. Aiming to reach the same phenomenology in spin-like systems, we propose a family of SU($N$)-symmetric models in the fundamental representation, on the square lattice with short-range interactions restricted to triangular units, a natural generalization for arbitrary $N$ of an SU($3$) model studied previously where time-reversal symmetry is broken explicitly. Guided by the recent discovery of SU($2$)$_1$ and SU($3$)$_1$ chiral spin liquids (CSL) on similar models we search for topological SU($N$)$_1$ CSL in some range of the Hamiltonian parameters via a combination of complementary numerical methods such as exact diagonalizations (ED), infinite density matrix renormalization group (iDMRG) and infinite Projected Entangled Pair State (iPEPS). Extensive ED on small (periodic and open) clusters up to $N=10$ and an innovative SU($N$)-symmetric version of iDMRG to compute entanglement spectra on (infinitely-long) cylinders in all topological sectors provide unambiguous signatures of the SU($N$)$_1$ character of the chiral liquids. An SU($4$)-symmetric chiral PEPS, constructed in a manner similar to its SU($2$) and SU($3$) analogs, is shown to give a good variational ansatz of the $N=4$ ground state, with chiral edge modes originating from the PEPS holographic bulk-edge correspondence. Finally, we discuss the possible observation of such Abelian CSL in ultracold atom setups where the possibility of varying $N$ provides a tuning parameter similar to the magnetic field in the physics of the FQH effect.

Within the tensor network framework, the (positive) thermal density operator can be approximated by a double layer of infinite Projected Entangled Pair Operator (iPEPO) coupled via ancilla degrees of freedom. To investigate the thermal properties of the spin-1/2 Heisenberg model on the square lattice, we introduce a family of fully spin-$SU(2)$ and lattice-$C_{4v}$ symmetric on-site tensors (of bond dimensions $D=4$ or $D=7$) and a plaquette-based Trotter-Suzuki decomposition of the imaginary-time evolution operator. A variational optimization is performed on the plaquettes, using a full (for $D=4$) or simple (for $D=7$) environment obtained from the single-site Corner Transfer Matrix Renormalization Group fixed point. The method is benchmarked by a comparison to quantum Monte Carlo in the thermodynamic limit. Although the iPEPO spin correlation length starts to deviate from the exact exponential growth for inverse-temperature $β\gtrsim 2$, the behavior of various observables turns out to be quite accurate once plotted w.r.t the inverse correlation length. We also find that a direct $T=0$ variational energy optimization provides results in full agreement with the $β\rightarrow\infty$ limit of finite-temperature data, hence validating the imaginary-time evolution procedure. Extension of the method to frustrated models is described and preliminary results are shown.

The unrestricted iPEPS simulations reveal an $U(1)$ symmetric structure, which we identify and impose on tensors, resulting in a clean and consistent picture of antiferromagnetic order vanishing at the phase transition with a quantum paramagnet at $J_2/J_1 \approx 0.46(1)$. The present methodology can be extended beyond this model to study generic order-to-disorder transitions in magnetic systems.

The nature of the zero-temperature phase diagram of the spin-$1/2$ $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model on a square lattice has been debated in the past three decades, which may hold the key to understand high temperature superconductivity. By using the state-of-the-art tensor network method, specifically, the finite projected entangled pair state (PEPS) algorithm, to simulate the global phase diagram the $J_1$-$J_2$ Heisenberg model up to $24\times 24$ sites, we provide very solid evidences to show that the nature of the intermediate nonmagnetic phase is a gapless quantum spin liquid (QSL), whose spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlations both decay with a power law behavior. There also exists a valence-bond solid (VBS) phase in a very narrow region $0.56\lesssim J_2/J_1\leq0.61$ before the system enters the well known collinear antiferromagnetic phase. The physical nature of the discovered gapless QSL and potential experimental implications are also addressed. We stress that we make the first detailed comparison between the results of PEPS and the well-established density matrix renormalization group (DMRG) method through one-to-one direct benchmark for small system sizes, and thus give rise to a very solid PEPS calculation beyond DMRG. Our numerical evidences explicitly demonstrate the huge power of PEPS for precisely capturing long-range physcis for highly frustrated systems, and also demonstrate the finite PEPS method is a very powerful approach to study strongly corrleated quantum many-body problems.

Among several (disconnected) families of SU(4)-symmetric PEPS, breaking or not C-symmetry, we identify critical or topological spin liquids which may be stable in some regions of the phase diagram. Quantum spin liquids can be faithfully represented and efficiently characterized within the framework of Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS). Guided by extensive exact diagonalization and density matrix renormalization group calculations, we construct an optimized symmetric PEPS for a SU$(3)_1$ chiral spin liquid on the square lattice. Characteristic features are revealed by the entanglement spectrum (ES) on an infinitely long cylinder. In all three $\mathbb{Z}_3$ sectors, the level counting of the linear dispersing modes is in full agreement with SU$(3)_1$ Wess-Zumino-Witten conformal field theory prediction. Special features in the ES are shown to be in correspondence with bulk anyonic correlations, indicating a fine structure in the holographic bulk-edge correspondence. Possible universal properties of topological SU$(N)_k$ chiral PEPS are discussed.

We study the zero-temperature phase diagram of the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model with breathing anisotropy (i.e., with different coupling strength on the upward and downward triangles) on the kagome lattice. Our study relies on large scale tensor network simulations based on infinite projected entangled-pair state and infinite projected entangled-simplex state methods adapted to the kagome lattice. Our energy analysis suggests that the U(1) algebraic quantum spin-liquid (QSL) ground-state of the isotropic Heisenberg model is stable up to very large breathing anisotropy until it breaks down to a critical lattice-nematic phase that breaks rotational symmetry in real space through a first-order quantum phase transition. Our results also provide further insight into the recent experiment on vanadium oxyfluoride compounds which has been shown to be relevant platforms for realizing QSL in the presence of breathing anisotropy.

By computing various local quantities as well as the half-system entanglement, we are able to distinguish between Mott, metallic and superconducting phases. We investigate the spin-1/2 Heisenberg antiferromagnet on the kagome lattice with breathing anisotropy (i.e. with weak and strong triangular units), constructing an improved simplex Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) ansatz by successive applications (up to three times) of local quantum gates which implement a filtering operation on the bare nearest-neighbor RVB state. The resulting Projected Entangled Pair State involves a small number of variational parameters (only one at each level of application) and preserves full lattice and spin-rotation symmetries. Despite its simple analytic form, the simplex RVB provides very good variational energies at strong and even intermediate breathing anisotropy. We show that it carries $Z_2$ topological order which does not fade away under the first few applications of the quantum gates, suggesting that the RVB topological spin liquid becomes a competing ground state candidate for the kagome antiferromagnet at large breathing anisotropy.

Using the Matrix Product State framework, we generalize the Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) construction to one-dimensional spin liquids with global color ${\rm SU}(N)$ symmetry, finite correlation lengths, and edge states that can belong to any self-conjugate irreducible representation (irrep) of ${\rm SU}(N)$. In particular, ${\rm SU}(2)$ spin-$1$ AKLT states with edge states of arbitrary spin $s=1/2,1,3/2,\cdots$ are constructed, and a general formula for their correlation length is given. Furthermore, we show how to construct local parent Hamiltonians for which these AKLT states are unique ground states. This enables us to study the stability of the edge states by interpolating between exact AKLT Hamiltonians. As an example, in the case of spin-$1$ physical degrees of freedom, it is shown that a quantum phase transition of central charge $c = 1$ separates the Symmetry Protected Topological (SPT) phase with spin-$1/2$ edge states from a topologically trivial phase with spin-$1$ edge states. We also address some specificities of the generalization to ${\rm SU}(N)$ with $N>2$, in particular regarding the construction of parent Hamiltonians. For the AKLT state of the ${\rm SU}(3)$ model with the $3$-box symmetric representation, we prove that the edge states are in the $8$-dimensional adjoint irrep, and for the ${\rm SU}(3)$ model with adjoint irrep at each site, we are able to construct two different reflection-symmetric AKLT Hamiltonians, each with a unique ground state which is either even or odd under reflection symmetry and with edge states in the adjoint irrep. Finally, examples of two-column and adjoint physical irreps for ${\rm SU}(N)$ with $N$ even and with edge states living in the antisymmetric irrep with $N/2$ boxes are given, with a conjecture about the general formula for their correlation lengths.

Abelian and non-Abelian topological phases exhibiting protected chiral edge modes are ubiquitous in the realm of the Fractional Quantum Hall (FQH) effect. Here, we investigate a spin-1 Hamiltonian on the square lattice which could, potentially, host the spin liquid analog of the (bosonic) non-Abelian Moore-Read FQH state, as suggested by Exact Diagonalisation of small clusters. Using families of fully SU(2)-spin symmetric and translationally invariant chiral Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS), variational energy optimization is performed using infinite-PEPS methods, providing good agreement with Density Matrix Renormalisation Group (DMRG) results. A careful analysis of the bulk spin-spin and dimer-dimer correlation functions in the optimized spin liquid suggests that they exhibit long-range "gossamer tails". We argue these tails are finite-$D$ artifacts of the chiral PEPS, which become irrelevant when the PEPS bond dimension $D$ is increased. From the investigation of the entanglement spectrum, we observe sharply defined chiral edge modes following the prediction of the SU(2)$_2$ Wess-Zumino-Witten theory and exhibiting a conformal field theory (CFT) central charge $c=3/2$, as expected for a Moore-Read chiral spin liquid. We conclude that the PEPS formalism offers an unbiased and efficient method to investigate non-Abelian chiral spin liquids in quantum antiferromagnets.

We analyze the stability of the U(1) Dirac spin liquid with respect to the presence of fermionic pairing that leads to a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid. For several values of the ratio $J_{\triangledown}/J_{\vartriangle}$, the size scaling of the energy gain due to the pairing fields and the variational parameters are reported. Our results show that the energy gain of the gapped spin liquid with respect to the gapless state either vanishes for large enough system size or scales to zero in the thermodynamic limit. Similarly, the optimized pairing amplitudes (responsible for opening the spin gap) are shown to vanish in the thermodynamic limit. Our outcome is corroborated by the application of one and two Lanczos steps to the gapless and gapped wave functions, for which no energy gain of the gapped state is detected when improving the quality of the variational states. Finally, we discuss the competition with the "simplex" $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ resonating-valence-bond spin liquid, valence-bond crystal, and nematic states in the strongly anisotropic regime, i.e., $J_{\triangledown} \ll J_{\vartriangle}$.

Motivated by the plethora of solid-state phases emerging from electron interactions, we consider an interacting version of the Hofstadter model including a Hubbard repulsion U. We investigate this model in the large-U limit corresponding to a t-J Hamiltonian with an external (orbital) magnetic field. By using renormalized mean field theory supplemented by exact diagonalization calculations of small clusters, we find evidence for competing symmetry-breaking phases, exhibiting (possibly co-existing) charge, bond and superconducting orders. A one-parameter family of long-range resonating valence bond (RVB) state on the square lattice was previously proposed to describe a critical spin liquid (SL) phase of the spin-$1/2$ frustrated Heisenberg model. We provide evidence that this RVB state in fact also realises a topological (long-range entangled) $\mathbb{Z}_2$ SL, limited by two transitions to critical SL phases. The topological phase is naturally connected to the $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge symmetry of the local tensor. This work shows that, on one hand, spin-$1/2$ topological SL with $C_{4v}$ point group symmetry and $SU(2)$ spin rotation symmetry exists on the square lattice and, on the other hand, criticality and nonbipartiteness are compatible. We also point out that, strong similarities between our phase diagram and the ones of classical interacting dimer models suggest both can be described by similar Kosterlitz-Thouless transitions. This scenario is further supported by the analysis of the one-dimensional boundary state.

Here, we construct generic families of chiral projected entangled pair states (chiral PEPS) with low bond dimension ($D=3,4,5$) which, upon optimization, provide better variational energies than the KL ansatz. The optimal $D=3$ PEPS exhibits chiral edge modes described by the Wess-Zumino-Witten $SU(2)_1$ model, as expected for the KL spin liquid. However, we find evidence that, in contrast to the KL state, the PEPS spin liquids have power-law dimer-dimer correlations and exhibit a gossamer long-range tail in the spin-spin correlations. A classification of SU(2)-invariant Projected Entangled Paired States (PEPS) on the square lattice, based on a unique site tensor, has been recently introduced by Mambrini et al.~\cite{Mambrini2016}. It is not clear whether such SU(2)-invariant PEPS can either i) exhibit long-range magnetic order (like in the Néel phase) or ii) describe a genuine quantum critical point (QCP) or quantum critical phase (QCPh) separating two ordered phases. Here, we identify a specific family of SU(2)-invariant PEPS of the classification which provides excellent variational energies for the $J_1-J_2$ frustrated Heisenberg model, especially at $J_2=0.5$, corresponding to the approximate location of the QCP or QCPh separating the Néel phase from a dimerized phase. The PEPS are build from virtual states belonging to the $\frac{1}{2}^{\otimes N} \oplus 0$ SU(2)-representation, i.e. with $N$ "colors" of virtual \hbox{spin-$\frac{1}{2}$}. Using a full update infinite-PEPS approach directly in the thermodynamic limit, based on the Corner Transfer Matrix renormalization algorithm supplemented by a Conjugate Gradient optimization scheme, we provide evidence of i) the absence of magnetic order and of ii) diverging correlation lengths (i.e. showing no sign of saturation with increasing environment dimension) in both the singlet and triplet channels, when the number of colors $N\ge 3$. We argue that such a PEPS gives a qualitative description of the QCP or QCPh of the $J_1-J_2$ model.

We elaborate a simple classification scheme of all rank-5 SU(2)-spin rotational symmetric tensors according to i) the on-site physical spin-$S$, (ii) the local Hilbert space $V^{\otimes 4}$ of the four virtual (composite) spins attached to each site and (iii) the irreducible representations of the $C_{4v}$ point group of the square lattice. We apply our scheme to draw a complete list of all SU(2)-symmetric translationally and rotationally-invariant Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) with bond dimension $D\leqslant 6$. All known SU(2)-symmetric PEPS on the square lattice are recovered and simple generalizations are provided in some cases. More generally, to each of our symmetry class can be associated a $({\cal D}-1)$-dimensional manifold of spin liquids (potentially) preserving lattice symmetries and defined in terms of ${\cal D}$ independent tensors of a given bond dimension $D$. In addition, generic (low-dimensional) families of PEPS explicitly breaking either (i) particular point-group lattice symmetries (lattice nematics) or (ii) time reversal symmetry (chiral spin liquids) or (iii) SU(2)-spin rotation symmetry down to $U(1)$ (spin nematics or Néel antiferromagnets) can also be constructed. We apply this framework to search for new topological chiral spin liquids characterized by well-defined chiral edge modes, as revealed by their entanglement spectrum. In particular, we show how the symmetrization of a double-layer PEPS leads to a chiral topological state with a gapless edge described by a SU(2)$_2$ Wess-Zumino-Witten model.

We study numerically the spin-1/2 XXZ model in a field on an infinite Kagome lattice. We use different algorithms based on infinite Projected Entangled Pair States (iPEPS) for this, namely: (i) with simplex tensors and 9-site unit cell, and (ii) coarse-graining three spins in the Kagome lattice and map** it to a square-lattice model with nearest-neighbor interactions, with usual PEPS tensors, 6- and 12-site unit cells. Similarly to our previous calculation at the SU(2)-symmetric point (Heisenberg Hamiltonian), for any anisotropy from the Ising limit to the XY limit, we also observe the emergence of magnetization plateaus as a function of the magnetic field, at $m_z = \frac{1}{3}$ using 6- 9- and 12-site PEPS unit cells, and at $m_z = \frac{1}{9}, \frac{5}{9}$ and $\frac{7}{9}$ using a 9-site PEPS unit cell, the later set-up being able to accommodate $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ solid order. We also find that, at $m_z = \frac{1}{3}$, (lattice) nematic and $\sqrt{3} \times \sqrt{3}$ VBC-order states are degenerate within the accuracy of the 9-site simplex-method, for all anisotropy. The 6- and 12-site coarse-grained PEPS methods produce almost-degenerate nematic and $1 \times 2$ VBC-Solid orders. Within our accuracy, the 6-site coarse-grained PEPS method gives slightly lower energies, which can be explained by the larger amount of entanglement this approach can handle, even when the PEPS unit-cell is not commensurate with the expected ground state. Furthermore, we do not observe chiral spin liquid behaviors at and close to the XY point, as has been recently proposed. Our results are the first tensor network investigations of the XXZ spin chain in a field, and reveal the subtle competition between nearby magnetic orders in numerical simulations of frustrated quantum antiferromagnets, as well as the delicate interplay between energy optimization and symmetry in tensor networks.

Interactions between elementary excitations in quasi-one dimensional antiferromagnets are of experimental relevance and their quantitative theoretical treatment has been a theoretical challenge for many years. Using matrix product states, one can explicitly determine the wavefunctions of the one- and two-particle excitations, and, consequently, the contributions to dynamical correlations. We apply this framework to the (non integrable) frustrated dimerized spin-1/2 chain, a model for generic spin-Peierls systems, where low-energy quasi-particle excitations are bound states of topological solitons. The spin structure factor involving two quasi-particle scattering states is obtained in the thermodynamic limit with full momentum and frequency resolution. This allows very subtle features in the two-particle spectral function to be revealed which, we argue, could be seen, e.g., in inelastic neutron scattering of spin-Peierls compounds under a change of the external pressure.

Protected chiral edge modes are a well-known signature of topologically ordered phases like the Fractional Quantum Hall States. Recently, using the framework of projected entangled pair states (PEPS) on the square lattice, we constructed a family of chiral Resonating Valence Bond states with $\mathbb{Z}_2$ gauge symmetry. Here we revisit and analyze in full details the properties of the edge modes as given by their Entanglement Spectra on a cylinder. Surprisingly, we show that the latter can be well described by a chiral SU(2)$_1$ Conformal Field Theory (CFT), as for the $ν=1/2$ (bosonic) gapped Laughlin state, although our numerical data suggest a critical bulk compatible with an emergent $U(1)$ gauge symmetry. We propose that our family of PEPS may physically describe a boundary between a chiral topological phase and a trivial phase.

We investigate the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the triangular lattice in the presence of nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ antiferromagnetic couplings. Motivated by recent findings from density-matrix renormalization group (DMRG) claiming the existence of a gapped spin liquid with signatures of spontaneously broken lattice point group symmetry [Zhu and White, Phys. Rev. B 92, 041105 (2015); Hu, Gong, Zhu, and Sheng, Phys. Rev. B 92, 140403 (2015)], we employ the variational Monte Carlo (VMC) approach to analyze the model from an alternative perspective that considers both magnetically ordered and paramagnetic trial states. We find a quantum paramagnet in the regime $0.08\lesssim J_2/J_1\lesssim 0.16$, framed by $120^{\circ}$ coplanar (stripe collinear) antiferromagnetic order for smaller (larger) $J_2/J_1$. By considering the optimization of spin-liquid wave functions of a different gauge group and lattice point group content as derived from Abrikosov mean-field theory, we obtain the gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid as the energetically most preferable state in comparison to all symmetric or nematic gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquids so far advocated by DMRG. Moreover, by the application of few Lanczos iterations, we find the energy to be the same as the DMRG result within error-bars. To further resolve the intriguing disagreement between VMC and DMRG, we complement our methodological approach by the pseudofermion functional renormalization group (PFFRG) to compare the spin structure factors for the paramagnetic regime calculated by VMC, DMRG, and PFFRG. This model promises to be an ideal test-bed for future numerical refinements in tracking the long-range correlations in frustrated magnets.

Spin-$S$ Heisenberg quantum antiferromagnets on the Kagome lattice offer, when placed in a magnetic field, a fantastic playground to observe exotic phases of matter with (magnetic analogs of) superfluid, charge, bond or nematic orders, or a coexistence of several of the latter. In this context, we have obtained the (zero temperature) phase diagrams up to $S=2$ directly in the thermodynamic limit thanks to infinite Projected Entangled Pair States (iPEPS), a tensor network numerical tool. We find incompressible phases characterized by a magnetization plateau vs field and stabilized by spontaneous breaking of point group or lattice translation symmetry(ies). The nature of such phases may be semi-classical, as the plateaus at $\frac{1}{3}$th, $(1-\frac{2}{9S})$th and $(1-\frac{1}{9S})$th of the saturated magnetization (the latter followed by a macroscopic magnetization jump), or fully quantum as the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ $\frac{1}{9}$-plateau exhibiting coexistence of charge and bond orders. Upon restoration of the spin rotation $U(1)$ symmetry a finite compressibility appears, although lattice symmetry breaking persists. For integer spin values we also identify spin gapped phases at low enough field, such as the $S=2$ (topologically trivial) spin liquid with no symmetry breaking, neither spin nor lattice.

Quantum spin models have been studied extensively in one and higher dimensions. Furthermore, these systems have been doped with holes to study $t$--$J$ models of $SU(2)$ spin-1/2. Their anyonic counterparts can be built from non-Abelian anyons, such as Fibonacci anyons described by $SU(2)_3$ theories, which are quantum deformations of the $SU(2)$ algebra. Inspired by the physics of $SU(2)$ spins, several works have explored ladders of Fibonacci anyons and also one-dimensional (1D) $t$--$J$ models. Here we aim to explore the combined effects of extended dimensionality and do** by studying ladders composed of coupled chains of interacting itinerant Fibonacci anyons. We show analytically that in the limit of strong rung couplings these models can be mapped onto effective 1D models. These effective models can either be gapped models of hole pairs, or gapless models described by $t$--$J$ (or modified $t$--$J$--$V$) chains of Fibonacci anyons, whose spectrum exhibits a fractionalization into charge and anyon degrees of freedom. By using exact diagonalizations for two-leg and three-leg ladders, we show that indeed the doped ladders show exactly the same behavior as that of $t$--$J$ chains. In the strong ferromagnetic rung limit, we can obtain a new model that hosts two different kinds of Fibonacci particles - which we denote as the heavy $τ$'s and light $τ$'s. These two particle types carry the same (non-Abelian) topological charge but different (Abelian) electric charges. Once again, we map the two-dimensional ladder onto an effective chain carrying these heavy and light $τ$'s. We perform a finite size scaling analysis to show the appearance of gapless modes for certain anyon densities whereas a topological gapped phase is suggested for another density regime.

Topological chiral phases are ubiquitous in the physics of the Fractional Quantum Hall Effect. Non-chiral topological spin liquids are also well known. Here, using the framework of projected entangled pair states (PEPS), we construct a family of chiral spin liquids on the square lattice which are generalized spin-1/2 Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) states obtained from deformed local tensors with $d+i\, d$ symmetry. On a cylinder, we construct four topological sectors with even or odd number of spinons on the boundary and even or odd number of ($\mathbb{Z}_2$) fluxes penetrating the cylinder which, we argue, remain orthogonal in the limit of infinite perimeter. The analysis of the transfer matrix provides evidence of short-range (long-range) triplet (singlet) correlations as for the critical (non-chiral) RVB state. The Entanglement Spectrum exhibits chiral edge modes, which we confront to predictions of Conformal Field Theory, and the corresponding Entanglement Hamiltonian is shown to be long ranged.

We report variational Monte Carlo calculations for the spin-$\frac{1}{2}$ Heisenberg model on the kagome lattice in the presence of both nearest-neighbor $J_1$ and next-nearest-neighbor $J_2$ antiferromagnetic superexchange couplings. Our approach is based upon Gutzwiller projected fermionic states that represent a flexible tool to describe quantum spin liquids with different properties (e.g., gapless and gapped). We show that, on finite clusters, a gapped $\mathbb{Z}_{2}$ spin liquid can be stabilized in the presence of a finite $J_2$ superexchange, with a substantial energy gain with respect to the gapless $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid. However, this energy gain vanishes in the thermodynamic limit, implying that, at least within this approach, the $U(1)$ Dirac spin liquid remains stable in a relatively large region of the phase diagram. For $J_2/J_1 \gtrsim 0.3$, we find that a magnetically ordered state with ${\bf q}={\bf 0}$ overcomes the magnetically disordered wave functions, suggesting the end of the putative gapless spin-liquid phase.

The nature of the kagome Heisenberg antiferromagnet (HAFM) is under ongoing debate. While recent evidence points towards a Z_2 topological spin liquid, the exact nature of the topological phase is still unclear. In this paper, we introduce semionic Resonating Valence Bond (RVB) states, this is, Resonating Valence Bond states which are in the Z_2 ordered double-semion phase, and study them using Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS). We investigate their physics and study their suitability as an ansatz for the HAFM, as compared to a conventional RVB state which is in the Toric Code Z_2 topological phase. In particular, we find that a suitably optimized "semionic simplex RVB" outperforms the equally optimized conventional "simplex RVB" state, and that the entanglement spectrum (ES) of the semionic RVB behaves very differently from the ES of the conventional RVB, which suggests to use the ES to discriminate the two phases. Finally, we also discuss the possible relevance of space group symmetry breaking in valence bond wavefunctions with double-semion topological order.

Two-dimensional Projected Entangled Pair States (PEPS) provide a unique framework giving access to detailed entanglement features of correlated (spin or electronic) systems. For a bi-partitioned quantum system, it has been argued that the Entanglement Spectrum (ES) is in a one-to-one correspondence with the physical edge spectrum on the cut and that the structure of the corresponding Entanglement Hamiltonian (EH) reflects closely bulk properties (finite correlation length, criticality, topological order, etc...). However, entanglement properties of systems with spontaneously broken continuous symmetry are still not fully understood. The spin-1/2 square lattice Heisenberg antiferromagnet provides a simple example showing spontaneous breaking of SU(2) symmetry down to U(1). The ground state can be viewed as a "quantum Néel state" where the classical (Néel) staggered magnetization is reduced by quantum fluctuations. Here I consider the (critical) Resonating Valence Bond state doped with spinons to describe such a state, that enables to use the associated PEPS representation (with virtual bond dimension $D=3$) to compute the EH and the ES for a partition of an (infinite) cylinder. In particular, I find that the EH is (almost exactly) a chain of a dilute mixture of heavy ($\downarrow$ spins) and light ($\uparrow$ spins) hardcore bosons, where light particles are subject to long-range hop**s. The corresponding ES shows drastic differences with the typical ES obtained previously for ground states with restored SU(2)-symmetry (on finite systems).

Optimizing translationally invariant infinite-Projected Entangled Pair States (iPEPS), we investigate the spin-2 Affleck-Kennedy-Lieb-Tasaki (AKLT) and spin-1 Heisenberg models on the Kagome lattice as a function of magnetic field. We found that the magnetization curves offer a wide variety of compressible and incompressible phases. Incompressible nematic phases breaking the lattice $C_3$ rotation -- for which we propose simple qualitative pictures -- give rise to magnetization plateaux at reduced magnetization $m_z=5/6$ and $m_z=1/3$ for spin-2 and spin-1, respectively, in addition to the $m_z=0$ plateaux characteristic of zero-field gapped spin liquids. Moving away from the plateaux we observe a rich variety of compressible superfluid nematic -- named "supernematic" -- phases breaking spontaneously both point group and spin-U(1) symmetries, as well as a superfluid phase preserving lattice symmetries. We also identify the nature -- continuous or first-order -- of the various phase transitions. Possible connections to experimental spin-1 systems are discussed.

We construct a family of simple fermionic projected entangled pair states (fPEPS) on the square lattice with bond dimension $D=3$ which are exactly hole-doped resonating valence bond (RVB) wavefunctions with short-range singlet bonds. Under do** the insulating RVB spin liquid evolves immediately into a superconductor with mixed $d+is$ pairing symmetry whose pair amplitude grows as the square-root of the do**. The relative weight between $s$-wave and $d$-wave components can be controlled by a single variational parameter $c$. We optimize our ansatz w.r.t. $c$ for the frustrated $t-J_1-J_2$ model (including both nearest and next-nearest neighbor antiferromagnetic interactions $J_1$ and $J_2$, respectively) for $J_2\simeq J_1/2$ and obtain an energy very close to the infinite-PEPS state (using full update optimization and same bond dimension). The orbital symmetry of the optimized RVB superconductor has predominant d-wave character, although we argue a residual (complex s-wave) time reversal symmetry breaking component should always be present. Connections of the results to the physics of superconducting cuprates and pnictides are outlined.
