Dressing the mesospins in different directions enables the quantification of the degree of texture in the internal magnetization and its impact on the interaction energy of the mesospins. We demonstrate directional dependence of the self-modification of internal mesospin textures in magnetic metamaterials, arising from the coupling of the atomic- and mesoscopic length-scales. Dressing the mesospins in different directions enables the quantification of the degree of texture in the internal magnetization and its impact on the interaction energy of the mesospins. The emerging anisotropy is manifested in a directional dependence of the remanent magnetization with temperature.

We provide experimental and numerical evidence for thermal excitations within and among magnetic mesospins, forming artificial spin ice structures. At low temperatures, a decrease in magnetization and increase in susceptibility is observed with increasing temperature, interpreted as an onset of thermal fluctuations of the magnetic texture within the mesospins. At elevated temperatures a pronounced susceptibility peak is observed, related to thermally induced flip** of the mesospins and a collapse of the remanent state. The fluctuations, while occurring at distinct length- and energy-scales, are shown to be tunable by the interaction strength of the mesospins.

Abstract:
We investigate the growth of thin Fe layers on MgAl$_2$O$_4$~(001) and MgO~(001) substrates using dc magnetron sputtering. The crystal quality of Fe layers deposited on MgAl$_2$O$_4$ is found to be substantially higher as compared to Fe grown on MgO substrates. The effects of the crystal quality on the magnetic and electronic transport properties are discussed.

Spin and spatial dimensionalities are universal concepts, essential for describing both phase transitions and dynamics in magnetic materials. Lately, these ideas have been adopted to describe magnetic properties of metamaterials, as well as to replicate and explore ensembles of mesospins belonging to different universality classes. Here, we take the next step by investigating magnetic metamaterials not conforming to the conventional framework of continuous phase transitions. Instead of a continuous decrease in the moment with temperature, discrete steps are possible, resulting in a binary transition in the interactions of the elements. The transition is enabled by nucleation and annihilation of vortex cores, shifting topological charges between the interior and the edges of the elements. Consequently, the mesospins can be viewed as shifting their spin dimensionality, from 2 (XY-like) to 0, (vortices) at the transition. The results provide insight into how dynamics at different length-scales couple, which can lead to thermally driven topological transitions in magnetic metamaterials.

We investigate the THz emission characteristics of ferromagnetic/non-magnetic metallic heterostructures, focusing on thin Fe/Pt bilayers. In particular, we report on the impact of optimized crystal growth of the epitaxial Fe layers on the THz emission amplitude and spectral bandwidth. We demonstrate an enhancement of the emitted intensity along with an expansion of the emission bandwidth. Both are related to reduced spin scattering and higher interface transmission. Our work provides a pathway for devicing optimal spintronic THz emitters based on epitaxial Fe. It also highlights how THz emission measurements can be utilized to characterize the changes in out-of-equilibrium spin current dynamics in metallic heterostructures, driven by subtle structural refinement.

Nanometer-thin rare-earth-transition metal (RE-TM) alloys with precisely controlled compositions and out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy are currently in the focus for ultrafast magnetophotonic applications. However, achieving lateral nanoscale dimensions, crucial for potential device downscaling, while maintaining designable optomagnetic functionality and out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy is extremely challenging. Here we integrate nanosized Tb$_{18}$Co$_{82}$ ferrimagnetic alloys, having strong out-of-plane magnetic anisotropy, within a gold plasmonic nanoantenna array to design micrometer-scale a magnetophotonic crystal that exhibit abrupt and narrow magneto-optical spectral features that are both magnetic field and light incidence direction controlled. The narrow Fano-type resonance arises through the interference of the individual nanoantenna's surface plasmons and a Rayleigh anomaly of the whole nanoantenna array, in both optical and magneto-optical spectra, which we demonstrate and explain using Maxwell-theory simulations. This robust magnetophotonic crystal opens the way for conceptually new high-resolution light incidence direction sensors, as well as for building blocks for plasmon-assisted all-optical magnetization switching in ferrimagnetic RE-TM alloys.

We report on the study of the thermal dynamics of square artificial spin ice, probed by means of temperature and frequency dependent AC susceptibility. Pronounced influence of the inter-island coupling strength was found on the frequency response of the samples. Through the subsequent analysis of the frequency- and coupling-dependent freezing temperatures, we discuss the phenomenological parameters obtained in the framework of Vogel-Fulcher-Tammann law in terms of the samples microscopic features. The high sensitivity and robust signal to noise ratio of AC susceptibility validates the latter as a promising and simple experimental technique for resolving the dynamics and temperature driven dynamics crossovers for the case of artificial spin ice.

Building nanotechnological analogues of naturally occurring magnetic structures has proven to be a powerful approach to studying topics like geometry-induced magnetic frustration and to provide model systems for statistical physics. Moreover, it practically allows to engineer novel physical properties by realizing artificial lattice geometries that are not accessible via natural crystallization or chemical synthesis. This has been accomplished with great success in the field of two-dimensional artificial spin ice systems with important branches reaching into the field of magnetic logic devices. Although first proposals have been made to advance into three dimensions (3D), established nanofabrication pathways based on electron beam lithography have not been adapted to obtain free-form 3D nanostructures. Here we demonstrate the direct-write fabrication of freestanding ferromagnetic 3D nano-architectures with full control over the degree of magnetic frustration. By employing micro-Hall sensing, we have determined the magnetic stray field generated by our free-form structures in an externally applied magnetic field and we have performed micromagnetic and macro-spin simulations to deduce the spatial magnetization profiles in the structures and analyze their switching behavior. Furthermore we show that the magnetic 3D elements can be combined with other 3D elements of different chemical composition and intrinsic material properties.

Recently, focused electron beam induced deposition has been employed to prepare functional magnetic nanostructures with potential in nanomagnetic logic and sensing applications by using homonuclear precursor gases like Fe(CO)5 or Co2(CO)8. Here we show that an extension towards the fabrication of bi-metallic compounds is possible by using a single-source heteronuclear precursor gas. We have grown CoFe alloy magnetic nanostructures from the HFeCo3(CO)12 metal carbonyl precursor. The compositional analysis indicate that the samples contain about 80 at% of metal and 10 at% of carbon and oxygen. Four-probe magnetotransport measurements are carried out on nanowires of various sizes down to a width of 50 nm, for which the room temperature resistivity of 43~$μΩ$cm is found. Micro-Hall magnetometry reveals that 50~nm$\times$250~nm nanobars of the material are ferromagnetic up to the highest measured temperature of 250 K. Finally, the TEM microstructural investigation shows that the deposits consist of a bcc Co-Fe phase mixed with a FeCo2O4 spinel oxide phase with nanograins of about 5 nm diameter.

We investigate a magnetic hysteresis loop with a remanent moment that couples to electric polarization to create coupled hysteretic multiferroic behavior in Lu2MnCoO6. Measurements of elastic neutron diffraction, muon spin relaxation, and micro-Hall magnetometry demonstrate an unusual mechanism for the magnetic hysteresis, namely the hysteretic evolution of a microscopic magnetic order, and not classic ferromagnetic domain effects. We show how the frustrated spin system evolves from antiferromagnetism with an incommensurate long-wavelength modulation and strong fluctuations towards a net magnetism. We also clarify the different temperature scales for the onset of ordering, dynamics, and hysteresis.
