We develop a continuum phase-field model for the simulation of diffusion limited solid-solid phase transformations during lithium insertion in LiFePO4-nano-particles. The solid-solid phase boundary between the LiFePO4 (LFP)-phase and the FePO4 (FP)-phase is modeled as a diffuse interface of finite width. The model-description explicitly resolves a single LiFePO4-particle, which is embedded in an elastically soft electrolyte-phase. Furthermore, we explicitly include anisotropic (orthorhombic) and inhomogeneous elastic effects, resulting from the coherency strain, as well as anisotropic (1D) Li-diffusion inside the nano-particle. The effect of the nano-particle's size on the kinetics of FP to LFP phase transformations is investigated by means of both model. Both models predict a substantial increase in the steady state transformation velocity as the particle-size decreases down to dimensions that are comparable with the width of the interface between the FP and the LFP-phase. However, the extra kinetic parameter of the Allen-Cahn-type description may be used to reduce the strength of the velocity-increase with the decreasing particle size. Further, we consider the influence of anisotropic and inhomogeneous elasticity on the lithiation-kinetics within a rectangularly shaped LiFePO4-particle embedded in an elastically soft electrolyte. Finally, the simulation of equilibrium shapes of LiFePO4-particles is discussed. Within a respective feasibility study, we demonstrate that also the simulation of strongly anisotropic particles with aspect ratios up to 1/5 is possible.

The simulations of the solidification of ternary Al-Cu-Ni alloys by means of a general multi-phase-field model for an arbitrary number of phases reveal that the real microstructure can be generated by coupling the real thermodynamic parameters of the phases and the evolution equations. The stability requirements on individual interfaces for model functions guarantee an absence of "ghost" phases in a $n$-dimensional phase-field space. The special constructed thermal noise terms disturb the stability and can produce the heterogeneous nucleation of product phases in accordance to the energetic and concentration conditions. Of particular interest is that in triple points the nucleation of the forth phase occurs without additional noise. Another observation is the growth of the eutectic-like or peritectic-like structure in various alloys.

Using mathematical model for intercalation dynamics in phase-separating materials proposed in (Singh, G. K.; Ceder, G.; Bazant, M. Z. Electrochimica Acta 2008, 53, 7599) and developed further in (Burch, D.; Bazant, M. Z. Nano Letters 2009, 9, 3795) we found that the spinodal gap generally shrinks as the particle size decreases. We also got that for some range of boundary reaction rate parameter and particle size the concentration spinodal gap is not continuous but it has stable "islands" where no spinodal decomposition is expected. In fact the presence of infinitesimally small boundary reaction rate parameter will destabilize nano particle even for infinitesimal length of particle. But then further continuous raise of this parameter will stabilize the system till some limit. We made careful analysis to study the dependence of spinodal decomposition on boundary reaction rate and size parameters which can be used for LiFePO4 battery material application. Our model predicted that for nanoparticles having size less than diffusion length and enough small boundary reaction rate spontanious charge or discharge will occur.

Abstract:
Phase-field simulations of the martensitic transformation (MT) in the austenitic matrix, which has already undergone the plastic deformation, are carried out. Phase-field simulations of the martensitic transformation (MT) in the austenitic matrix, which has already undergone the plastic deformation, are carried out. For this purpose the elasto-plastic phase-field approach of incoherent MT developed in the previous work [Kundin et. al. J. Mech. and Phys. Solids 59 (2011) 2012] is used. The evolution equation for the dislocation density field is extended by taking into account the thermal and athermal annihilation of the dislocations in the austenitic matrix and the athermal annihilation at the transformation front. It is shown that the plastic deformation in the austenite caused by the MT interacts with the pre-deformed plastic strain that leads to the inhomogeneous increasing of the total dislocation density. During the phase transformation one part of the dislocations in the pre-deformed austenite is inherited by the martensitic phase and this inheritance depends on the crystallography of MT. An other part of dislocations annihilates at the transformation front and decreases the dislocation density in the growing martensite. Based on the simulation results a phenomenological dependency of the inherited dislocations on the martensitic fraction and the plastic deformation in the martensite and austenitic matrix is proposed.

In this paper a general multi-phase-field model is presented which is an extension and modification of the model proposed by Folch and Plapp for three phase fields [R. Folch and M. Plapp, Phys. Rev. E 72 011602 (2005)] to the arbitrary number of phases. In the model a physical constraint requiring that the sum of all phase fields in the system is equal to one is resolved by the method of Lagrange multipliers. Namely, the thermodynamic driving force is reduced to its projection on the plane of the constraint. The general model functions in a $N$-dimensional phase field space were derived which justify the requirements for the stability of the total free energy functional on dual interfaces and hence the absence of "ghost" phases. Furthermore, the case of the different interface energies and mobility parameters on the individual interfaces is resolved in a comprehensive manner. It is shown that the static equilibrium for three or four phases fulfils Young's law for contact angles with high accuracy. Also the model is verified by the quantitative simulation of the solidification in an Al-Cu-Ni alloy in the case of the four-phase transformation reaction. We found the way to control the character of new phase nucleation using additional terms in free energy functional.

We report very simple and accurate algebraic expressions for the van der Waals (vdW) potentials and the forces between two parallel and crossed carbon nanotubes. The Lennard-Jones potential for two carbon atoms and the method of the smeared out approximation suggested by L.A. Girifalco were used. It is found that interaction between parallel and crossed tubes are described by different uniform curves which depend only on dimensionless distance. The explicit functions for equilibrium vdW distances, well depths, and maximal attractive forces have been given. These results may be used as a guide for analysis of experimental data to investigate interaction between nanotubes of various natures.

The dynamic processes in the surface layers of metals subjected activity of a pulsing laser irradiation, which destroyed not the crystalline structure in details surveyed. The procedure of calculation of a dislocation density generated in bulk of metal during the relaxation processes and at repeated pulse laser action is presented. The results of evaluations coincide with high accuracy with transmission electron microscopy dates. The dislocation-interstitial mechanism of laser-stimulated mass-transfer in real crystals is presented on the basis of the ideas of the interaction of structure defects in dynamically deforming medium. The good compliance of theoretical and experimental results approves a defining role of the presented mechanism of mass transfer at pulse laser action on metals. The possible implementation this dislocation-interstitial mechanism of mass transfer in metals to other cases of pulsing influences is justified
