We revisit the charged rotating Bañados-Teitelboim-Zanelli (BTZ) solution in the three-dimensional Einstein-Maxwell-$Λ$ system. After the erroneous announcement of its discovery at the end of the original BTZ paper in 1992, the solution was first obtained by Clément in the paper published in 1996 by coordinate transformations from the charged non-rotating BTZ solution. While Clément's form of the solution is valid only for ${Λ<0}$, we present a new form for a wider range of $Λ$ by uniform scaling transformations and a reparametrization. We also introduce new coordinates corresponding to the Doran coordinates in the Kerr spacetime, in which the metric and also its inverse are regular at the Killing horizon, and described by elementary functions. Lastly, we show that (i) the algebraic Cotton type of the spacetime is type III on the Killing horizon and type I away from the horizon, and (ii) the energy-momentum tensor for the Maxwell field is of the Hawking-Ellis type I everywhere.

We present a convenient method of algebraic classification of 2+1 spacetimes into the types I, II, D, III, N and O, without using any field equations. It is based on the 2+1 analogue of the Newman-Penrose curvature scalars $Ψ_A$ of distinct boost weights, which are specific projections of the Cotton tensor onto a suitable null triad. The algebraic types are then simply determined by the gradual vanishing of such Cotton scalars, starting with those of the highest boost weight. This classification is directly related to the specific multiplicity of the Cotton-aligned null directions (CANDs) and to the corresponding Bel-Debever criteria. Using a bivector (that is 2-form) decomposition, we demonstrate that our method is fully equivalent to the usual Petrov-type classification of 2+1 spacetimes based on the eigenvalue problem and determining the respective canonical Jordan form of the Cotton-York tensor. We also derive a simple synoptic algorithm of algebraic classification based on the key polynomial curvature invariants. To show the practical usefulness of our approach, we perform the classification of several explicit examples, namely the general class of Robinson-Trautman spacetimes with an aligned electromagnetic field and a cosmological constant, and other metrics of various algebraic types.

A new effective approach to the algebraic classification of geometries in 2+1 gravity is presented. The classification into types I, II, D, III, N, O is directly related to the multiplicity of the four Cotton-aligned null directions (CANDs). We derive a synoptic algorithm based on the invariants constructed from $Ψ_A$, and we show its agreement with the Petrov scheme based on eigenvalues and canonical Jordan form of the Cotton-York tensor. Our method is simpler and also general because it can be used in any 2+1 theory, such as Einstein's gravity or topologically massive gravity. As an example we analyze the algebraic structure of Robinson-Trautman spacetimes which include charged black holes with a cosmological constant.

We present an improved metric form of the complete family of exact black hole spacetimes of algebraic type D, including any cosmological constant. This class was found by Debever in 1971, Plebanski and Demianski in 1976, and conveniently reformulated by Griffiths and Podolsky in 2005. In our new form of this metric the key functions are simplified, partially factorized, and fully explicit. They depend on seven parameters with direct physical meanings, namely m, a, l, alpha, e, g, Lambda which characterize mass, Kerr-like rotation, NUT parameter, acceleration, electric and magnetic charges of the black hole, and the cosmological constant, respectively. Moreover, this general metric reduces directly to the familiar forms of (possibly accelerating) Kerr-Newman-(anti-)de Sitter spacetime, charged Taub-NUT-(anti-)de Sitter solution, or (possibly rotating and charged) C-metric with a cosmological constant by simply setting the corresponding parameters to zero. In addition, it shows that the Plebanski-Demianski family does not involve accelerating NUT black holes without the Kerr-like rotation. The new improved metric also enables us to study various physical and geometrical properties, namely the character of singularities, two black-hole and two cosmo-acceleration horizons (in a generic situation), the related ergoregions, global structure including the Penrose conformal diagrams, parameters of cosmic strings causing the acceleration of the black holes, their rotation, pathological regions with closed timelike curves, or thermodynamic quantities.

We extend our previous work in which we derived the most general form of an induced metric describing the geometry of an axially symmetric extremal isolated horizon (EIH) in asymptotically flat spacetime. Here we generalize it to EIHs in asymptotically (anti-)de Sitter spacetime. The resulting metric conveniently forms a 6-parameter family which, in addition to a cosmological constant $Λ$, depends on the area of the horizon, total electric and magnetic charges, and two deficit angles representing conical singularities at poles. Such a metric is consistent with results obtained in the context of near-horizon geometries. Moreover, we study extremal horizons of all black holes within the class of Plebanski-Demianski exact (electro)vacuum spacetimes of the algebraic type D. In an important special case of non-accelerating black holes, that is the famous Kerr-Newman-NUT-(A)dS metric, we were able to identify the corresponding extremal horizons, including their position and geometry, and find explicit relations between the physical parameters of the metric and the geometrical parameters of the EIHs.

We also admit any value of the cosmological constant. The whole family of such $Λ$-electrovacuum local solutions splits into two distinct subclasses, namely the non-expanding Kundt class and the expanding Robinson-Trautman class. While the Kundt class only admits electromagnetic fields which are aligned along the geometrically privileged null congruence, the Robinson-Trautman class admits both aligned and also more complex non-aligned Maxwell fields. We derive all the metric and Maxwell field components, together with explicit constraints imposed by the field equations. We also identify the most important special spacetimes of this type, namely the coupled gravitational-electromagnetic waves and charged black holes.

We derive a new metric form of the complete family of black hole spacetimes (without a cosmological constant) presented by Plebanski and Demianski in 1976. It further improves the convenient representation of this large family of exact black holes found in 2005 by Griffiths and Podolsky. The main advantage of the new metric is that the key functions are considerably simplified, fully explicit, and factorized. All four horizons are thus clearly identified, and degenerate cases with extreme horizons can easily be discussed. Moreover, the new metric depends only on six parameters with direct geometrical and physical meaning, namely m, a, l, alpha, e, g which characterize mass, Kerr-like rotation, NUT parameter, acceleration, electric and magnetic charges of the black hole, respectively. This general metric reduces directly to the familiar forms of either (possibly accelerating) Kerr-Newman, charged Taub-NUT solution, or (possibly rotating and charged) C-metric by simply setting the corresponding parameters to zero, without the need of any further transformations. In addition, it shows that the Plebanski-Demianski family does not involve accelerating black holes with just the NUT parameter, which were discovered by Chng, Mann and Stelea in 2006. It also enables us to investigate various physical properties, such as the character of singularities, horizons, ergoregions, global conformal structure including the Penrose diagrams, cosmic strings causing the acceleration of the black holes, their rotation, pathological regions with closed timelike curves, or explicit thermodynamic properties. It thus seems that our new metric is a useful representation of this important family of black hole spacetimes of algebraic type D in the asymptotically flat settings.

We systematically investigate axisymmetric extremal isolated horizons (EIHs) defined by vanishing surface gravity, corresponding to zero temperature. In the first part, using the Newman-Penrose and GHP formalism we derive the most general metric function for such EIHs in the Einstein-Maxwell theory, which complements the previous result of Lewandowski and Pawlowski. We prove that it depends on 5 independent parameters, namely deficit angles on the north and south poles of a spherical-like section of the horizon, its radius (area), and total electric and magnetic charges of the black hole. The deficit angles and both charges can be separately set to zero. In the second part of our paper, we identify this general axially symmetric solution for EIH with extremal horizons in exact electrovacuum Plebanski-Demianski spacetimes, using the convenient parametrization of this family by Griffiths and Podolsky. They represent all (double aligned) black holes of algebraic type D without a cosmological constant. Apart from a conicity, they depend on 6 physical parameters (mass, Kerr-like rotation, NUT parameter, acceleration, electric and magnetic charges) constrained by the extremality condition. We were able to determine their relation to the EIH geometrical parameters. This explicit identification of type D extremal black holes with a unique form of EIH includes several interesting subclasses, such as accelerating extremely charged Reissner-Nordstrom black hole (C-metric), extremal accelerating Kerr-Newman, accelerating Kerr-NUT, or non-accelerating Kerr-Newman-NUT black holes.

We study static spherically symmetric solutions to the vacuum field equations of quadratic gravity in the presence of a cosmological constant $Λ$. Motivated by the trace no-hair theorem, we assume the Ricci scalar to be constant throughout a spacetime. Furthermore, we employ the conformal-to-Kundt metric ansatz that is valid for all static spherically symmetric spacetimes and leads to a considerable simplification of the field equations. We arrive at a set of two ordinary differential equations and study its solutions using the Frobenius-like approach of (infinite) power series expansions. While the indicial equations considerably restrict the set of possible leading powers, careful analysis of higher-order terms is necessary to establish the existence of the corresponding classes of solutions. We thus obtain various non-Einstein generalizations of the Schwarzschild, (anti-)de Sitter [or (A)dS for short], Nariai, and Plebański-Hacyan spacetimes. Interestingly, some classes of solutions allow for an arbitrary value of $Λ$, while other classes admit only discrete values of $Λ$. For most of these classes, we give recurrent formulas for all series coefficients. We determine which classes contain the Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole as a special case and briefly discuss the physical interpretation of the spacetimes. In the discussion of physical properties, we naturally focus on the generalization of the Schwarzschild-(A)dS black hole, namely the Schwarzschild-Bach-(A)dS black hole, which possesses one additional Bach parameter. We also study its basic thermodynamical properties and observable effects on test particles caused by the presence of the Bach tensor. This work is a considerable extension of our letter [Phys. Rev. Lett., 121, 231104, 2018].

We present and analyze a class of exact spacetimes which describe accelerating black holes with a NUT parameter. First, we verify that the intricate metric found by Chng, Mann and Stelea in 2006 indeed solves Einstein's vacuum field equations of General Relativity. We explicitly calculate all components of the Weyl tensor and determine its algebraic structure. As it turns out, it is actually of algebraically general type I with four distinct principal null directions. It explains why this class of solutions has not been (and could not be) found within the large Plebanski-Demianski family of type D spacetimes. Then we transform the solution into a much more convenient metric form which explicitly depends on three physical parameters: mass, acceleration, and the NUT parameter. These parameters can independently be set to zero, recovering thus the well-known spacetimes in standard coordinates, namely the C-metric, the Taub-NUT metric, the Schwarzschild metric, and flat Minkowski space. Using this new metric, we investigate physical and geometrical properties of such accelerating NUT black holes. In particular, we localize and study four Killing horizons (two black-hole plus two acceleration) and investigate the curvature. Employing the scalar invariants we prove that there are no curvature singularities whenever the NUT parameter is nonzero. We identify asymptotically flat regions and relate them to conformal infinities. This leads to a complete understanding of the global structure. The boost-rotation metric form reveals that there is actually a pair of such black holes. They uniformly accelerate in opposite directions due to the action of rotating cosmic strings or struts located along the corresponding two axes. Rotation of these sources is directly related to the NUT parameter. In their vicinity there are pathological regions with closed timelike curves.

The corresponding curvature scalars directly enter the invariant form of equation of geodesic deviation, enabling us to understand the specific local physical properties of the gravitational field constrained by the EGB theory. We also present and analyze several interesting explicit classes of such vacuum solutions, namely the Ricci type III spacetimes, all geometries with constant-curvature transverse space, and the whole pp-wave class admitting a covariantly constant null vector field. Given the very broad range of topics that might be relevant to LISA, we present here a sample of what we view as particularly promising directions, based in part on the current research interests of the LISA scientific community in the area of fundamental physics. We organize these directions through a "science-first" approach that allows us to classify how LISA data can inform theoretical physics in a variety of areas. For each of these theoretical physics classes, we identify the sources that are currently expected to provide the principal contribution to our knowledge, and the areas that need further development. The classification presented here should not be thought of as cast in stone, but rather as a fluid framework that is amenable to change with the flow of new insights in theoretical physics.

We study static, spherically symmetric vacuum solutions to Quadratic Gravity, extending considerably our previous Rapid Communication [Phys. Rev. D 98, 021502(R) (2018)] on this topic. Using a conformal-to-Kundt metric ansatz, we arrive at a much simpler form of the field equations in comparison with their expression in the standard spherically symmetric coordinates. We present details of the derivation of this compact form of two ordinary differential field equations for two metric functions. Next, we apply analytical methods and express their solutions as infinite power series expansions. We systematically derive all possible cases admitted by such an ansatz, arriving at six main classes of solutions, and provide recurrent formulas for all the series coefficients. These results allow us to identify the classes containing the Schwarzschild black hole as a special case. It turns out that one class contains only the Schwarzschild black hole, three classes admit the Schwarzschild solution as a special subcase, and two classes are not compatible with the Schwarzschild solution at all since they have strictly nonzero Bach tensor. In our analysis, we naturally focus on the classes containing the Schwarzschild spacetime, in particular on a new family of the Schwarzschild-Bach black holes which possesses one additional non-Schwarzschild parameter corresponding to the value of the Bach tensor invariant on the horizon. We study its geometrical and physical properties, such as basic thermodynamical quantities and tidal effects on free test particles induced by the presence of the Bach tensor. Impulsive gravitational waves in Minkowski space were introduced by Roger Penrose at the end of the 1960s, and have been widely studied over the decades. Here we focus on non-expanding waves which later have been generalised to impulses travelling in all constant-curvature backgrounds, that is also the (anti-)de Sitter universe. While Penrose's original construction was based on his vivid geometric `scissors-and-paste' approach in a flat background, until now a comparably powerful visualisation and understanding have been missing in the ${Λ\not=0}$ case. In this work we provide such a picture: The (anti-)de Sitter hyperboloid is cut along the null wave surface, and the `halves' are then re-attached with a suitable shift of their null generators across the wave surface. This special family of global null geodesics defines an appropriate comoving coordinate system, leading to the continuous form of the metric. Moreover, it provides a complete understanding of the nature of the Penrose junction conditions and their specific form. These findings shed light on recent discussions of the memory effect in impulsive waves.

Unfortunately, by making a mistake in our calculations, we came to the wrong conclusion that such solutions do not exist. We are now correcting this mistake. In fact, this allows us to explicitly find a new large family of gyratonic solutions in the Robinson-Trautman class of spacetimes in any dimension greater than (or equal to) three. Gyratons thus exist in all twist-free and shear-free geometries, that is both in the expanding Robinson-Trautman and in the non-expanding Kundt classes of spacetimes. We derive, summarize and compare explicit canonical metrics for all such spacetimes in arbitrary dimension.

Under a weak assumption of the existence of a geodesic null congruence, we present the general solution of the Einstein field equations in three dimensions with any value of the cosmological constant, admitting an aligned null matter field, and also gyratons (a matter field in the form of a null dust with an additional internal spin). The general local solution consists of the expanding Robinson-Trautman class and the non-expanding Kundt class. The gyratonic solutions reduce to spacetimes with a pure radiation matter field when the spin is set to zero. Without matter fields, we obtain new forms of the maximally symmetric vacuum solutions. We discuss these complete classes of solutions and their various subclasses. In particular, we identify the gravitational field of an arbitrarily accelerating source (the Kinnersley photon rocket, which reduces to a Vaidya-type non-moving object) in the Robinson-Trautman class, and pp-waves, vanishing scalar invariants (VSI) spacetimes, and constant scalar invariants (CSI) spacetimes in the Kundt class.

We present a new explicit class of black holes in general quadratic gravity with a cosmological constant. These spherically symmetric Schwarzschild-Bach-(anti-)de Sitter geometries (Schwa-Bach-(A)dS), derived under the assumption of constant scalar curvature, form a three-parameter family determined by the black-hole horizon position, the value of Bach invariant on the horizon, and the cosmological constant. Using a conformal to Kundt metric ansatz, the fourth-order field equations simplify to a compact autonomous system. Its solutions are found as power series, enabling us to directly set the Bach parameter and/or cosmological constant equal to zero. To interpret these spacetimes, we analyse the metric functions. In particular, we demonstrate that for a certain range of positive cosmological constant there are both black-hole and cosmological horizons, with a static region between them. The tidal effects on free test particles and basic thermodynamic quantities are also determined.

We present, in an explicit form, the metric for all spherically symmetric Schwarzschild-Bach black holes in Einstein-Weyl theory. In addition to the black hole mass, this complete family of spacetimes involves a parameter that encodes the value of the Bach tensor on the horizon. When this additional "non-Schwarzschild parameter" is set to zero the Bach tensor vanishes everywhere and the "Schwa-Bach" solution reduces to the standard Schwarzschild metric of general relativity. Compared with previous studies, which were mainly based on numerical integration of a complicated form of field equations, the new form of the metric enables us to easily investigate geometrical and physical properties of these black holes, such as specific tidal effects on test particles, caused by the presence of the Bach tensor, as well as fundamental thermodynamical quantities.

We explicitly express the most general form of such (electro)vacuum solutions with any cosmological constant, and we investigate the geometrical and physical meaning of the seven parameters they contain. We present various metric forms, and by analyzing the corresponding coordinates in the weak-field limit we elucidate the global structure of these space-times, such as the character of possible singularities. We also demonstrate that members of this family can be understood as generalizations of classic B-metrics. In particular, the BI-metric represents an external gravitational field of a tachyonic (superluminal) source, complementary to the AI-metric which is the well-known Schwarzschild solution for exact gravitational field of a static (standing) source.

We generalize the classical junction conditions for constructing impulsive gravitational waves by the Penrose "cut and paste" method. Specifically, we study nonexpanding impulses which propagate in spaces of constant curvature with any value of the cosmological constant (that is Minkowski, de Sitter, or anti-de Sitter universes) when additional off-diagonal metric components are present. Such components encode a possible angular momentum of the ultra-relativistic source of the impulsive wave - the so called gyraton. We explicitly derive and analyze a specific transformation that relates the distributional form of the metric to a new form which is (Lipschitz) continuous. Such a transformation automatically implies an extended version of the Penrose junction conditions. It turns out that the conditions for identifying points of the background spacetime across the impulse are the same as in the original Penrose "cut and paste" construction, but their derivatives now directly represent the influence of the gyraton on the axial motion of test particles. Our results apply both for vacuum and nonvacuum solutions of Einstein's field equations, and can also be extended to other theories of gravity.

In this work we present and analyze a new class of coordinate representations of de Sitter and anti-de Sitter spacetimes for which the metrics are diagonal and (typically) static and axially symmetric. Contrary to the well-known forms of these fundamental geometries, that usually correspond to a 1+3 foliation with the 3-space of a constant spatial curvature, the new metrics are adapted to a 2+2 foliation, and are warped products of two 2-spaces of constant curvature. This new class of (anti-)de Sitter metrics depends on the value of cosmological constant Lambda and two discrete parameters +1,0,-1 related to the curvature of the 2-spaces. The class admits 3 distinct subcases for Lambda>0 and 8 subcases for Lambda<0. We systematically study all these possibilities. In particular, we explicitly present the corresponding parametrizations of the (anti-)de Sitter hyperboloid, visualize the coordinate lines and surfaces within the global conformal cylinder, investigate their mutual relations, present some closely related forms of the metrics, and give transformations to standard de Sitter and anti-de Sitter metrics. Using these results, we also provide a physical interpretation of B-metrics as exact gravitational fields of a tachyon.

We consider a general class of four-dimensional geometries admitting a null vector field that has no twist and no shear but has an arbitrary expansion. We explicitly present the Petrov classification of such Robinson-Trautman (and Kundt) gravitational fields, based on the algebraic properties of the Weyl tensor. In particular, we determine all algebraically special subcases when the optically privileged null vector field is a multiple principal null direction (PND), as well as all the cases when it remains a single PND. No field equations are a priori applied, so that our classification scheme can be used in any metric theory of gravity in four dimensions. In the classic Einstein theory this reproduces previous results for vacuum spacetimes, possibly with a cosmological constant, pure radiation and electromagnetic field, but can be applied to an arbitrary matter content. As non-trivial explicit examples we investigate specific algebraic properties of the Robinson-Trautman spacetimes with a free scalar field, and also black hole spacetimes in the pure Einstein-Weyl gravity.

Since all Einstein spacetimes are vacuum solutions to quadratic gravity in four dimensions, in this paper we study various aspects of non-Einstein vacuum solutions to this theory. Most such known solutions are of traceless Ricci and Petrov type N with a constant Ricci scalar. Thus we assume the Ricci scalar to be constant which leads to a substantial simplification of the field equations. We prove that a vacuum solution to quadratic gravity with traceless Ricci tensor of type N and aligned Weyl tensor of any Petrov type is necessarily a Kundt spacetime. This will considerably simplify the search for new non-Einstein solutions. Similarly, a vacuum solution to quadratic gravity with traceless Ricci type III and aligned Weyl tensor of Petrov type II or more special is again necessarily a Kundt spacetime.
Then we study the general role of conformal transformations in constructing vacuum solutions to quadratic gravity. We find that such solutions can be obtained by solving one non-linear partial differential equation for a conformal factor on any Einstein spacetime or, more generally, on any background with vanishing Bach tensor. In particular, we show that all geometries conformal to Kundt are either Kundt or Robinson-Trautman, and we provide some explicit Kundt and Robinson-Trautman solutions to quadratic gravity by solving the above mentioned equation on certain Kundt backgrounds.

We study Robinson-Trautman spacetimes in the presence of an aligned p-form Maxwell field and an arbitrary cosmological constant in n>=4 dimensions. As it turns out, the character of these exact solutions depends significantly on the (relative) value of n and p. In odd dimensions the solutions reduce to static black holes dressed by an electric and a magnetic field and whose horizon is an Einstein space (further constrained by the Einstein-Maxwell equations) -- both the Weyl and Maxwell type are D. Even dimensions, however, open up more possibilities. In particular, when 2p=n there exist non-static solutions describing black holes acquiring (or losing) mass by receiving (or emitting) electromagnetic radiation. In this case the Weyl type is II (D) and the Maxwell type can be II (D) or N. Conditions under which the Maxwell field is self-dual (for odd p) are also discussed, and a few explicit examples presented. Finally, the case p=1 is special in all dimensions and leads to static metrics with a non-Einstein transverse space.

We investigate the Weyl tensor algebraic structure of a fully general family of D-dimensional geometries that admit a non-twisting and shear-free null vector field k. From the coordinate components of the curvature tensor we explicitly derive all Weyl scalars of various boost weights. This enables us to give a complete algebraic classification of the metrics in the case when the optically privileged null direction k is a (multiple) Weyl aligned null direction (WAND). No field equations are applied, so that the results are valid not only in Einstein's gravity, including its extension to higher dimensions, but also in any metric gravitation theory that admits non-twisting and shear-free spacetimes.
We prove that all such geometries are of type I(b), or more special, and we derive surprisingly simple necessary and sufficient conditions under which k is a double, triple or quadruple WAND. All possible algebraically special types, including the refinement to subtypes, are thus identified, namely II(a), II(b), II(c), II(d), III(a), III(b), N, O, IIi, IIIi, D, D(a), D(b), D(c), D(d), and their combinations. Some conditions are identically satisfied in four dimensions.
We discuss both important subclasses, namely the Kundt family of geometries with the vanishing expansion (Theta=0) and the Robinson-Trautman family (Theta\not=0, and in particular Theta=1/r). Finally, we apply Einstein's field equations and obtain a classification of all Robinson-Trautman vacuum spacetimes. This reveals fundamental algebraic differences in the D>4 and D=4 cases, namely that in higher dimensions there only exist such spacetimes of types D(a)=D(abd), D(c)=D(bcd) and O.

Contrary to the closely related Kundt class and pp-waves, the corresponding off-diagonal metric components thus do not encode the angular momentum of some gyraton. We present a general method which can be used for geometrical and physical interpretation of an arbitrary spacetime in four or any higher number of dimensions. It is based on the systematic analysis of relative motion of free test particles. We demonstrate that local effect of the gravitational field on particles, as described by equation of geodesic deviation with respect to a natural orthonormal frame, can always be decomposed into a canonical set of transverse, longitudinal and Newton-Coulomb-type components, isotropic influence of a cosmological constant, and contributions arising from specific matter content of the universe. In particular, exact gravitational waves in Einstein's theory always exhibit themselves via purely transverse effects with D(D-3)/2 independent polarization states. To illustrate the utility of this approach we study the family of pp-wave spacetimes in higher dimensions and discuss specific measurable effects on a detector located in four spacetime dimensions. For example, the corresponding deformations caused by a generic higher-dimensional gravitational waves observed in such physical subspace, need not be tracefree.

We present and analyze exact solutions of the Einstein-Maxwell equations in higher dimensions which form a large subclass of the Kundt family of spacetimes. We assume that the cosmological constant may be nonvanishing, and the matter consists of a background aligned electromagnetic field and an additional pure radiation (gyratonic) field with a spin. We show that the field equations reduce to a set of linear equations on the transverse space which can be solved exactly and expressed in terms of the Green functions. We thus find explicit exact gyratonic gravitational and electromagnetic fields created by a radiation beam of null matter with arbitrary profiles of energy density and angular momenta. In the absence of the gyratonic matter we obtain pure nonexpanding higher-dimensional gravitational waves.
In particular, we investigate gyratons and waves propagating on backgrounds which are a direct-product of 2-spaces of constant curvature. Such type D or 0 background spacetimes generalize 4-dimensional Nariai, anti-Nariai and Plebanski-Hacyan universes, and conformally flat Bertotti-Robinson and Minkowski spaces. These spacetimes belong to a wider class of spaces which admit the Kahler structure related to the background magnetic field. The obtained wave and gyraton solutions are also members of the recently discussed class of spacetimes with constant scalar invariants (CSI) of the curvature tensor.

This helps to clarify the geometrical properties, the coordinate ranges and the meaning of free parameters in the static vacuum solution of Linet and Tian. In particular, when the cosmological constant is positive, the spacetimes have toroidal symmetry. One of the two curvature singularities can be removed by matching the Linet-Tian vacuum solution across a toroidal surface to a corresponding region of the dust-filled Einstein static universe. Some other properties and limiting cases of these space-times are also described, together with their generalisation to higher dimensions.

Photon rockets moving arbitrarily in any dimension

A family of explicit exact solutions of Einstein's equations in four and higher dimensions is studied which describes photon rockets accelerating due to an anisotropic emission of photons. It is possible to prescribe an arbitrary motion, so that the acceleration of the rocket need not be uniform - both its magnitude and direction may vary with time. Except at location of the point-like rocket the spacetimes have no curvature singularities, and topological defects like cosmic strings are also absent. Any value of a cosmological constant is allowed. We investigate some particular examples of motion, namely a straight flight and a circular trajectory, and we derive the corresponding radiation patterns and the mass loss of the rockets. We also demonstrate the absence of "gravitational aberration" in such spacetimes. This interesting member of the higher-dimensional Robinson-Trautman class of pure radiation spacetimes of algebraic type D generalises the class of Kinnersley's solutions that has long been known in four-dimensional general relativity.

We study past horizons in the class of type II Robinson-Trautman vacuum spacetimes with a cosmological constant. These exact radiative solutions of Einstein's equations exist in the future of any sufficiently smooth initial data, and they approach the corresponding spherically symmetric Schwarzschild-(anti-)de Sitter metric. By analytic methods we investigate the existence, uniqueness, location and character of the past horizons in these spacetimes. In particular, we generalize the Penrose-Tod equation for marginally trapped surfaces, which form such white-hole horizons, to the case of a nonvanishing cosmological constant, we analyze behavior of its solutions and visualize their evolutions. We also prove that these horizons are explicit examples of an outer trap** horizon and a dynamical horizon, so that they are spacelike past outer horizons.

Asymptotic behaviour of gravitational and electromagnetic fields of exact type D solutions from the large Plebanski-Demianski family of black hole spacetimes is analyzed. The amplitude and directional structure of radiation is evaluated in cases when the cosmological constant is non-vanishing, so that the conformal infinities have either de Sitter-like or anti-de Sitter-like character. In particular, explicit relations between the parameters that characterize the sources (that is their mass, electric and magnetic charges, NUT parameter, rotational parameter, and acceleration) and properties of the radiation generated by them are presented. The results further elucidate the physical interpretation of these solutions and may help to understand radiative characteristics of more general spacetimes than those that are asymptotically flat.

We calculate all components of the curvature and Ricci tensors, without assuming any specific matter content, and discuss algebraic types and main geometric constraints imposed by general Einstein's field equations. We explicitly derive Einstein-Maxwell equations, including an arbitrary cosmological constant, in the case of vacuum or possibly an aligned electromagnetic field. Finally, we introduce canonical subclasses of the Kundt family and we identify the most important special cases, namely generalised pp-waves, VSI or CSI spacetimes, and gyratons.
