Interweaving Chiral Spirals
Abstract: We elaborate how to construct interweaving chiral spirals in (2+1) dimensions, defined as a superposition of chiral spirals oriented in different directions. We divide a two-dimensional Fermi sea into distinct wedges, characterized by the opening angle 2Theta and depth Q ~ pF, where pF is the Fermi momentum. In each wedge, the energy is lowered by forming a single chiral spiral. The optimal values… ▽ More

How Wide is the Transition to Deconfinement?
Abstract: Pure SU(3) glue theories exhibit a deconfining phase transition at a nonzero temperature, Tc. Using lattice measurements of the pressure, we develop a simple matrix model to describe the transition region, when T > Tc. This model, which involves three parameters, is used to compute the behavior of the 't Hooft loop. There is a Higgs phase in this region, where off diagonal color modes are heavy, a… ▽ More

Covering the Fermi Surface with Patches of Quarkyonic Chiral Spirals
Abstract: We argue that in cold, dense quark matter, in the limit of a large number of colors the ground state is unstable with respect to creation of a complicated Quarkyonic Chiral Spiral (QCS) state, in which both chiral and translational symmetries are spontaneously broken. The entire Fermi surface is covered with patches of QCSs, whose number increases as the quark density does. The low energy excitati… ▽ More

The Dichotomous Nucleon: Some Radical Conjectures for the Large Nc Limit
Abstract: We discuss some problems with the large Nc approximation for nucleons which arise if the axial coupling of the nucleon to pions is large, g_A \sim Nc. Quarkyonic Chiral Spirals
Abstract: We consider the formation of chiral density waves in Quarkyonic matter, which is a phase where cold, dense quarks experience confining forces. Small shear viscosity in the semi quark gluon plasma
Abstract: At nonzero temperature in QCD, about the deconfining phase transition there is a "semi" quark gluon plasma (semi-QGP), where the expectation value of the (renormalized) Polyakov loop is less than one. Hadron Production in Ultra-relativistic Nuclear Collisions: Quarkyonic Matter and a Triple Point in the Phase Diagram of QCD

Zero Point Energy of Renormalized Wilson Loops
Abstract: The quark antiquark potential, and its associated zero point energy, can be extracted from lattice measurements of the Wilson loop. Parity violation through color superconductivity
Abstract: We give a pedagogical discussion of how color superconductivity can produce parity violation in cold quark matter at very high densities.

Pionic Measures of Parity and CP Violation in High Energy Nuclear Collisions
Abstract: The collisions of large nuclei at high energies could produce metastable vacua which are odd under parity, P, charge conjugation, C, and/or CP. Using only the three-momenta of charged pions (or kaons), we show how to construct global observables which are odd under P, C, and CP, and which can be measured on an event by event basis. Model dependent estimates of the P-odd observables are on the or… ▽ More

The Potential for the Phase of the Wilson line at Nonzero Quark Density
Abstract: The contribution of quarks to the effective potential for the phase of the Wilson line is computed at nonzero temperature and quark chemical potential to one and two loop order. At zero temperature, regardless of the value of the quark chemical potential, the effective potential for the phase of the Wilson line vanishes. At nonzero temperature, for special values of the phase the free energy of… ▽ More

Superfluidity in a Model of Massless Fermions Coupled to Scalar Bosons
Abstract: We study superfluidity in a model of massless fermions coupled to a massive scalar field through a Yukawa interaction. Gap equations for a condensate with total spin J=0 are solved in the mean-field approximation. For the Yukawa interaction, the gaps for right- and left-handed fermions are equal in magnitude and opposite in sign, so that condensation occurs in the J^P = 0^+ channel. At finite sc… ▽ More

A first order transition and parity violation in a color superconductor
Abstract: In cold, dense quark matter, quarks of different flavor can form Cooper pairs which are anti-triplets under color and have total spin J=0. The transition to a phase where strange quarks condense with either up or down quarks is driven first order by the Coleman-Weinberg mechanism. At densities sufficiently high to (effectively) restore the axial U(1) symmetry, then relative to the ordinary vacuu… ▽ More

Non-Equilibrium Real-Time Dynamics of Quantum Fields: Linear and Non-Linear Relaxation in Scalar and Gauge Theories
Abstract: The real time evolution of field condensates is solved for small and large field amplitudes in scalar theories. For small amplitudes, the quantum equations of motion for the condensate can be linearized and solved by Laplace transform. The late time evolution turns to be determined by the singularities in the complex plane (one-particle poles, two- and multi- particle cuts, Landau cuts for non-zer… ▽ More
