Pencils of plane cubics with one base point
Abstract: We study pencils of plane cubics with only one base point and general member smooth, giving a complete classification. Under the additional hypothesis that all members are irreducible, we prove that there exists a unique non-isotrivial pencil with these properties up to projective transformation. On the irreducibility of Hessian loci of cubic hypersurfaces
Abstract: We study the problem of the irreducibility of the Hessian variety $\mathcal{H}_f$ associated with a smooth cubic hypersurface $V(f)\subset \mathbb{P}^n$. We prove that when $n\leq5$, $\mathcal{H}_f$ is normal and irreducible if and only if $f$ is not of Thom-Sebastiani type, i.e., roughly, one can not separate its variables. Projective structures and Hodge theory
Abstract: Every compact Riemann surface $X$ admits a natural projective structure $p_u$ as a consequence of the uniformization theorem. In this work we describe the construction of another natural projective structure on $X$, namely the Hodge projective structure $p_h$, related to the second fundamental form of the period map. On dominant rational maps from products of curves to surfaces of general type
Abstract: In this paper we investigate the existence of generically finite dominant rational maps from products of curves to surfaces of general type. We prove that the product CxD of two distinct very general curves of genus g>6 and g'>1 does not admit dominant rational maps on other surfaces of general type.

Parametrization of rational maps on a variety of general type, and the finiteness theorem
Abstract: In a previous paper, we provided some update in the treatment of the finiteness theorem for rational maps of finite degree from a fixed variety to varieties of general type. In the present paper we present another improvement, introducing the natural parametrization of maps by means of the space of linear projections in a suitable projective space, and this leads to some new insight in the geometr… ▽ More

Points of order two on theta divisors
Abstract: We give a bound on the number of points of order two on the theta divisor of a principally polarized abelian variety A. When A is the Jacobian of a curve C the result can be applied in estimating the number of effective square roots of a fixed line bundle on C.

Brill-Noether loci for divisors on irregular varieties
Abstract: For a projective variety X, a line bundle L on X and r a natural number we consider the r-th Brill-Noether locus W^r(L,X):={η\in Pic^0(X)|h^0(L+η)\geq r+1}: we describe its natural scheme structure and compute the Zariski tangent space. If X is a smooth surface of maximal Albanese dimension and C is a curve on X, we define a Brill-Noether number ρ(C, r) and we prove, under some mild additional ass… ▽ More

The Fano normal function
Abstract: The Fano surface $F$ of lines in the cubic threefold $V$ is naturally embedded in the intermediate Jacobian $J(V)$, we call "Fano cycle" the difference $F-F^-$, this is homologous to 0 in $J(V)$. We study the normal function on the moduli space which computes the Abel-Jacobi image of the Fano cycle. By means of the related infinitesimal invariant we can prove that the primitive part of the normal… ▽ More

On the canonical map of surfaces with q>=6
Abstract: We carry out an analysis of the canonical system of a minimal complex surface of general type with irregularity q>0. Using this analysis we are able to sharpen in the case q>0 the well known Castelnuovo inequality K^2>=3p_g+q-7. Then we turn to the study of surfaces with p_g=2q-3 and no fibration onto a curve of genus >1. We prove that for q>=6 the canonical map is birational. Combining this resul… ▽ More

Generic Torelli theorem for Prym varieties of ramified coverings
Abstract: In this paper we prove that the Prym map, from the space of double coverings of a curve of genus g with r branch points to the moduli space of abelian varieties, is generically injective if r>6 and g>1, r=6 and g>2, r=4 and g>4, r=2 and g>5. We also show that a very generic Prym variety of dimension at least 4 is not isogenous to a Jacobian.

A characterization of the symmetric square of a curve
Abstract: In this paper a new intrinsic geometric characterization of the symmetric square of a curve and of the ordinary product of two curves is given. More precisely it is shown that the existence on a surface of general type S of irregularity q of an effective divisor D having self-intersection D^2>0 and arithmetic genus q implies that S is either birational to a product of curves or to the second symme… ▽ More

On surfaces of general type with q=5
Abstract: We prove that a complex surface S with irregularity q(S)=5 that has no irrational pencil of genus >1 has geometric genus p_g(S)>7. As a consequence, one is able to classify minimal surfaces S of general type with q(S)=5 and p_g(S)<8. This result is a negative answer, for q=5, to the question asked in arXiv:0811.0390 of the existence of surfaces of general type with irregularity q>3 that have… ▽ More

A New Curve Algebraically but not Rationally Uniformized by Radicals
Abstract: We give a new example of a curve C algebraically, but not rationally, uniformized by radicals. This means that C has no map onto the projective line P^1 with solvable Galois group, while there exists a curve C' that maps onto C and has a finite morphism to P^1 with solvable Galois group. We construct such a curve C of genus 9 in the second symmetric product of a general curve of genus 2. It is als… ▽ More

Galois closure and Lagrangian varieties
Abstract: We use Galois closures of finite rational maps between complex projective varieties to introduce a new method for producing varieties such that the holomorphic part of the cup product map has non-trivial kernel. We then apply our result to the two-dimensional case and we construct a new family of surfaces which are Lagrangian in their Albanese variety. Moreover, we analyze these surfaces computing… ▽ More
