Flax fibres are valuable reinforcements for tomorrow's composites. However, defects called kink-bands, which mainly appear on fibres during the extraction and transformation phases, might affect their mechanical properties. Defects induced pores, within the kink-band are investigated in this work. They were morphologically explored using synchrotron phase-contrast X-ray microtomography, a technique that displays a sharp 3D representation of the pores. The study highlights the link between kink-bands and secondary cell wall ultrastructure. Pores are organised concentrically around the lumen, and their low thickness suggest that they are located at the interface between cellulose layers within S2 (G) layer. Moreover, the pores inclination with reference to the lumen axis follows the typical microfibrillar angle changes observed in the literature in the kink-band region. The volumes of the pores were measured, and a local increase in porosity was revealed in zones where defects are most severe along the fibre.

The creation and ultrastructure of kink-bands in flax fibres are key issues for develo** more and more performing biobased composite materials. Nevertheless, despite many hypotheses and structural characterization, the exact origin of kink-bands and the moment they appear remain unexplained. Here, by using cutting-edge techniques such as microtomography, a range of flax stems and fibres, from the green stem to stretched fibres, were morphologically explored. The study shows that all the extracted fibres, whether scutched, combed or stretched, contain significant amounts of kink-bands, which can be identified by the large pores they contain. On the other hand, at the scale of the green or retted stems, tomographic analysis does not reveal any kink-bands. These original observations suggest that the stress undergone by the plants during their growth is not sufficient, without major growth or lodging accidents, to generate these structural defects; the latter are only revealed after mechanical extraction of the fibres. Hypotheses regarding the kink-band appearance deformation levels are also given to complete the observations.

We can correlate the atomic positions, the type of magnetic structure and the nature of the spin waves whatever the R ion and temperature. The key parameter is the position of the Mn ions in the unit cell with respect to a critical threshold of 1/3, which determines the sign of the coupling between Mn triangular planes.

We report an ultrasonic investigation of the elastic moduli on a single crystal of hexagonal YMnO_3 as a function of temperature. Stiffening anomalies in the antiferromagnetic Néel state below T_N = 72.4 K are observed on all the four elastic moduli C_{ii}. The anomalies are the most important on C_{11} and C_{66} for in-plane elastic deformations; this is consistent with a strong coupling of the lattice with the in-plane exchange interactions. We use a Landau free energy model to account for these elastic anomalies. We derive an expression which relates the temperature profile of the anomaly to the order parameter; the critical exponent associated to this parameter $β$ = 0.42 is not consistent with a chiral XY or 3D Heisenberg universality class, but more in agreement with a conventional antiferromagnetic long range order. A tiny softening anomaly on C_{11} for which hysteresis effects are observed could be indicative of an interaction between ferroelectric and magnetic domains at T_N. Moreover, magnetic fluctuations effects both above and below T_N are identified through abnormal temperature and magnetic field effects.

Comparison with muSR data demonstrates that the wipe out of the 139La signal is mainly due to slowly fluctuating electric field gradients. This provides strong evidence for the slow diffusion of lattice excitations, identified with Jahn-Teller small polarons.

We describe the evolution of the static and dynamic spin correlations of La$_{1-x}$Ca$_x$MnO$_3$, for x=0.1, 0.125 and 0.2, where the system evolves from the canted magnetic state towards the insulating ferromagnetic state, approaching the metallic transition (x=0.22).
In the x=0.1 sample, the observation of two spin wave branches typical of two distinct types of magnetic coupling, and of a modulation in the elastic diffuse scattering characteristic of ferromagnetic inhomogeneities, confirms the static and dynamic inhomogeneous features previously observed at x$<$0.1. The anisotropic q-dependence of the intensity of the low-energy spin wave suggests a bidimensionnal character for the static inhomogeneities. At x=0.125, which corresponds to the occurence of a ferromagnetic and insulating state, the two spin wave branches reduce to a single one, but anisotropic. At this concentration, an anomaly appears at {\bf q$_0$}=(1.25,1.25,0), that could be related to an underlying periodicity, as arising from (1.5,1.5,0) superstructures.
At x=0.2, the spin-wave branch is isotropic. In addition to the anomaly observed at q$_0$, extra magnetic excitations are observed at larger q, forming an optical branch. The two dispersion curves suggest an anti-crossing behavior at some {\bf q$_0$'} value, which could be explained by a folding due to an underlying perodicity involving four cubic lattice spacings.

The temperature dependence of these fields yields the behavior of the staggered magnetization from which a static critical exponent ($β=0.36(2)$) is extracted and discussed. The muon spin-spin relaxation rate shows a critical slowing down (contrary to preliminary findings) with a critical exponent $n=0.7(1)$, witnessing the Ising nature of the dynamic fluctuations. The muon precession frequencies vs. applied magnetic field reveal the saturation of the weak ferromagnetic domain structure originated by the Dzialoshinski-Moriya antisymmetric exchange.

Elastic and inelastic neutron scattering experiments have been performed in a La$_{0.94}$Sr$_{0.06}$MnO$_3$ untwinned crystal, which exhibits an antiferromagnetic canted magnetic structure with ferromagnetic layers.
The elastic small q scattering exhibits a modulation with an anisotropic q-dependence. It can be pictured by ferromagnetic inhomogeneities or polarons with a platelike shape, the largest size ($\approx17Å$) and largest inter-polaron distance ($\approx$ 38$Å$) being within the ferromagnetic layers. Comparison with observations performed on Ca-doped samples, which show the growth of the magnetic polarons with do**, suggests that this growth is faster for the Sr than for the Ca substitution. Below the gap of the spin wave branch typical of the AF layered magnetic structure, an additional spin wave branch reveals a ferromagnetic and isotropic coupling, already found in Ca-doped samples. Its q-dependent intensity, very anisotropic, closely reflects the ferromagnetic correlations found for the static clusters. All these results agree with a two-phase electronic segregation occurring on a very small scale, although some characteristics of a canted state are also observed suggesting a weakly inhomogeneous state.

The low-doped magnetic perovskite La_{7/8}Sr_{1/8}MnO_3 undergoes within the paramagnetic-semiconducting phase a first-order structural transition due to antiferrodistorsive ordering of Jahn-Teller deformed MnO_6 octahedra. This allows to study not only the influence of the spin configuration on the magneto-transport properties (CMR effect) but also the role of orbital order and disorder. The orbital ordering transition (at 269 K in zero magnetic field) causes a doubling of the resistivity (regardless of the CMR effect in applied magnetic fields) and a drop of the paramagnetic susceptibility. The latter might be interpreted in terms of a shrinking of spin polarons. External magnetic fields shift the ordering transition to lower temperatures according to the field-induced decrease of the carrier localization. The magnetic field - temperature phase boundary line was investigated by means of magnetoresistance (up to 12 T) and pulsed-fields magnetization measurements up to 50 T. The pronounced magnetization anomalies, associated with the phase transition, vanish for fields exceeding 20 T. This behaviour has been attributed to a field-induced crossover from antiferrodistorsive order to a nondistorsive/ferromagnetic orbital configuration.

Elastic neutron scattering experiments performed in semi-conducting La(1-x)Ca(x)MnO3 single crystals (x=0.05, 0.08), reveal new features in the problem of electronic phase separation and metal insulator transition. Below TN, the observation of a broad magnetic modulation in the q-dependent scattering intensity, centered at nearly identical qm whatever the q direction, can be explained by a liquid-like spatial distribution of similar magnetic droplets. A semi-quantitative description of their magnetic state, diameter, and average distance, can be done using a two-phase model. Such a picture can explain the anomalous characteristics of the spin wave branches and may result from unmixing forces between charge carriers predicted from the s-d model.

The radio frequency (RF) response of La1-xSrxMnO3 single crystals reveal a variety of features associated with the structural, electronic and magnetic properties of the system. The resonance technique operating at ~ 4 MHz employed in this study is sensitive to small changes in both the magnetic susceptibility and resistivity of the samples. Very sharp changes in frequency are observed at the ferromagnetic (FM) and structural phase transitions in both the metallic (x = 0.175) and insulating (0.125) crystals studied. In addition to the known transitions identified as FM and orthorhombic distortions, our experiments show rich structures which are not observed in conventional DC magnetization and transport experiments. Our results demonstrate that RF experiments are ideally suited to investigate the complex phase diagram in the manganites. The colossal frequency change that we observe at the FM transition in the La1-xSrxMnO3 crystals is indicative of the enormous potential for using these materials in high frequency switching applications.
